Earlier this year, I posted a video showing how I decorated a wreath with a Harry Potter theme!
Today, I wanted to show you how to repurpose those same templates to make some super easy
Harry Potter Christmas tree ornaments!
First, print out the free pdf template which I will link to in the video description below,
and cut out the shapes that you'd like to make into ornaments.
I chose five of them, but you can use this technique to turn all of them into some really
easy to make tree decorations.
Once you have all of your templates ready to go, flip the pieces over and trace the
shapes onto the back of some glitter craft foam in the colors of your choice and cut
them out!
That way, you won't end up with pencil marks on the front and if you're using glitter
foam like I am, it'll be easier to see your lines on the smooth side so you can easily
cut them out.
The first ornament I made is the gold glitter lightning bolt, which is super easy to make!
Cut out a second bolt that is a mirror image of the first one and lay it glitter side down
on the table.
Hot glue the ends of about a 7" piece of ribbon near the top of the shape to make a
loop, being very careful because that glue is very hot and the ribbon is tiny, then cover
the whole shape in some hot glue before pressing the second lightning bolt shape onto it, glitter
side up.
That way, both sides of the ornament are glittery and the ends of the ribbon are securely trapped
between them.
Trim around the edges if they don't perfectly line up and you have a very sparkly lightning
bolt to hang on your tree!
The next one uses the exact same steps where you glue two mirror image shapes together
with the ends of the ribbon between them, but this time it's the sorting hat.
I personally really like the way these ornaments look with glitter craft foam, especially once
the tree lights can reflect off of them, so I went with this black glitter for it even
though the sorting hat is brown.
Feel free to get creative with this and choose whichever colors you want!
To make a Hogwarts letter, you'll need these three envelope pieces in white craft foam
and now I'm going to use some purple felt to make a tiny Hogwarts seal using the small
circle template.
The embroidery details are optional, but here's how I did it!
I cut a piece of silver embroidery floss, split it in half so it's thinner than the
original 6 strands, thread it onto a needle, and tied a knot at the end.
Then, I used backstitch to make a tiny H in the center of the circle!
I have a quick video lesson on backstitch if you want a slowed down explanation, but
basically, I bring the needle up from the back where I want each stitch to start and
push it back down where I want the stitch to end.
H is a pretty easy place to start because it's all straight lines and you don't
even have to include these little serifs on the ends, I'm just an overachiever.
When it's done, turn it over and tie a knot onto a nearby stitch so the knot stays attached
to the back of the circle and trim the excess!
Now for assembly!
Hot glue the trapezoid shape onto the bottom edge of the rectangle.
Then, cut a piece of ribbon and hot glue the ends of that onto the middle to make a loop
like we did before.
Glue the triangle shape on top of that so it's pointing downward and the long edge
is lined up with the top of the rectangle, then glue the seal right over the center point of
the triangle.
Yay!
I love this one.
So this is the way the snitch ornament was assembled for the Harry Potter wreath I did,
and you can do it that way for an ornament too if you'd like!
But I decided to experiment a little to make the ornament version less wide and more sturdy
and I'll show you that process now.
I just traced one wing shape on white glitter craft foam this time, then I traced the snitch
template circle over the end where it usually attaches and cut the whole shape out.
My goal here was to have a larger point where it attaches to the circle to make it more
durable, and looking back, it probably didn't need to be the exact size of the circle template
because when you put it between two gold circles, it looks a little bit like an oreo, but I
guess that's how you learn.
Anyway, glue the ends of a ribbon loop to the white circle,
then glue one gold circle onto that side, flip it over, and glue the other gold circle
onto the other side!
Then you have more of a profile view of a golden snitch.
And the last one I'm making today is probably my favorite, the Harry Potter glasses.
When you cut these out of the craft foam, it's a little bit tricky to remove the lenses
of the glasses - try making a hole in the middle then cutting out pizza slice shapes
around the circle like this!
To make this ornament, you'll need two mirror images of each shape - the glasses and the
little lightning bolt, plus a slightly longer ribbon than we've been using for the other ornaments.
So the idea here is that the ribbon will cross in the center and the little lightning bolt
will be glued on either side of that place where it crosses so it kind of floats above
the glasses where Harry's forehead would be.
Okay, so you've got the back of the glasses glitter side down on the table.
Glue the ends of the ribbon on either side of the bridge, making sure that you've laid
it out so the ribbon crosses in the middle where you like it.
Now, glue the other glasses shape on top of it, glitter side up!
I did one side at a time because this is a more complicated shape and hot glue sets pretty
quickly.
To finish this one up, lay one little lightning bolt glitter side down onto the table, put
some hot glue on it, and carefully lay the ribbon down into the glue right where it crosses.
Then add some glue to the back of the second lightning bolt and press it into place, lining
it up with the piece on the bottom.
For all of these ornaments, finish up by pulling off all of the hot glue strings and using
your scissors to clean up any of the edges that don't line up perfectly.
And then you can decorate your Christmas tree with a whole bunch of very glittery Harry
Potter references.
This is such a quick project and craft foam is incredibly easy to work with - I kind of
want to make everything out of craft foam now.
If you wanted to make this project more kid-friendly, you could pass on the hot glue and use a less
burn-happy adhesive.
I just love that these required absolutely no drying time.
You could even draw your own templates and use this technique to make any shape ornaments
you want.
I hope that you enjoyed this nerdy holiday DIY tutorial!
If you make any of these ornaments yourself, post photos of them on social media and tag
me @laurenfairwx because I would love to see how they turn out.
Share this video with your friends if you know any Harry Potter fans who might want
to make them, and be sure to check out my other tutorials while you're here!
I have a whole bunch of Harry Potter themed crafts on my channel that would make excellent
gifts for them.
And just in case you noticed these weird shadows in the background of these clips, it's because
an almost three year old was doing this while I was filming.
I hope you enjoyed this tiny glimpse at what it's like working at home with a very cute
toddler for an assistant.

Thanks so much for watching, happy holidays, and I'll see you soon!
