-And let's talk about this one here -- "Bumblebee."
-Yes.
-This is a giant "Transformers" movie.
It's like a -- I'd say almost like a --
It's a -- He's the cutest Transformer.
-He definitely is the cutest. -Bumblebee.
-Yeah. Oh, yes. -Yeah, you feel --
It has heart. It has emotions.
-Absolutely. This movie, I feel, is so special for that reason
because it has everything
that "Transformers" fans know and love
with its beautiful cutting-edge action --
much like "Spider-Man," it's very visually just stunning.
But this has so much heart, so much emotion.
There's laughter.
There's a major sense of wonder.
It's just -- It's -- It's an all-around feel-good movie.
-I heard that you -- we love John Cena, too.
He's a friend of the show. -He told me to tell you hello.
-Oh, I love him so much. -[ Laughs ]
-I heard you almost killed him on -- on set.
That's a bummer. -Right, yeah.
[ Laughter ] -Yeah, we love John Cena. Yeah.
-Okay, I can explain. -Yeah.
-Actually, I can't. -Please don't do that.
We love John Cena. Don't hurt him.
-I know. I -- Believe me. I love him, too.
But, yeah, I -- there's this particular scene where --
I do a lot of driving in the movie.
I know how to drive.
So I figured this isn't gonna be something crazy challenging.
It's not like a whole new skill set I have learn,
although, I did have to learn how to drive stick,
which was something I didn't know how to do.
-[ Gasps ] -Anyway...
-Dude, I don't know how to do that, either.
-Great. Well, I kind of... -I'm terrible.
-It's like, when you study for a test, you learn all the answers,
and then you forget it the next day.
I don't know. Don't ask me how to drive a stick.
-You still don't know how to do it?
-No, I do. I did, but now... -Yeah.
-Okay, anyway... -No, I'm not.
I'm not going to test you. -Great. Great.
-I don't need to. I don't care. Yeah.
-As a car rolls out. [ Laughter ]
No. So, I was -- in this particular setup,
there was a man on top of the car driving.
It's called a pod car, where he's completely in control.
Weirdest feeling in the world --
being in the driver's seat of a car
and not having control over it. -Wow.
-So we come -- at a reasonable speed --
we were flying down this --
down this, like, hill into a turn,
come to a screeching halt,
literally, just dangerously close to John Cena.
He didn't flinch.
I, on the other hand,
let out a noise I didn't know was humanly possible.
[ Light laughter ]
The minute they called "cut," I run out of the car.
And I'm like, "John, are you -- I'm so sorry! Are you okay?"
as if I had control, which I didn't.
[ Light laughter ] But I still just felt so bad.
And he just was like, "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm all right."
-I mean, that's...
-Like, you are not normal, John Cena.
-Yeah, yeah. Right, yeah. He really is not, right?
He's not afraid of anything. -But, no, I mean,
the car probably would have been more damaged, so...
-[ Laughs ] Banging into John Cena?
-Yeah.
-And then, you did a song for the movie.
-Yes, that's right.
-The closing credits, "Back to Life."
-"Back to Life."
-How'd you -- How'd you write the song?
How did you come up with the idea?
-So, the sort of conversation of a possible music collaboration
happened in the middle of filming,
and it was one of those things where I kind of felt like,
you know, it'll be interesting to see
if something really comes of this.
It's a great conversation. It's kind of like,
when somebody says, "Let's get lunch,"
and you're like, "Yeah, great," it's never gonna happen.
-Right. [ Laughter ]
-So, this was kind of one of those things where it was like,
"Let's just speak it to see if it -- if it works out."
So, they were in post-production.
I hadn't seen the film,
and they were like, "Let's do it.
Let's -- Let's get to writing and pull everybody in
and see what we can come up with."
So, tons and tons of songs were written -- amazing songs,
and then I went and saw the film for the first time.
And within 24 hours, the concept came to me with "Back to Life,"
and I called up some of my friends in L.A.,
who are my favorite writers and producer,
and they turned it out.
And again, 11th hour, last minute.
And I think, for me, it's always been on my bucket list
to have a song of my own in a movie of my own.
And that, aside, is like, insane.
But, at the end of the day, being able to deliver
to our director and the filmmakers
what they felt was
an honest and accurate representation of our film
is really the awesome part. -Good for you, pal.
-Thank you. [ Cheers and applause ]
-I'm so -- that's so awesome. -Thank you.
-You're going to perform the song tonight?
-Yes, I am. -"Back to Life."
Thank you for doing that. -Thank you.
-First, I want to show a clip.
Here is Hailee Steinfeld in "Bumblebee."
