[♪ INTRO ]

If you've ever seen the TV show Unforgettable, you've probably thought it would be pretty

cool if you had a perfect memory.

I mean, Detective Carrie Wells can remember everything, even the clues that everyone else

forgot, and she can use that to solve crimes.

I mean most of people can't even remember what they had for a lunch yesterday.

Your memory is probably a lot like that.

Even though we remember the story of our lives and important life events, most of the boring

going to school and going to work that happens every day gets lost.

But not for people with the actually-very-real condition called hyperthymesia, where they

can almost perfectly remember everything that's ever happened to them.

It's not the same as photographic memory, which is more about remembering everything

you see, and as far as scientists can tell doesn't actually exist.

Hyperthymesia does exist, though, and it can actually be kind of a burden for the people

who have it.

We didn't even know the condition existed until 2006, partly because it's incredibly

rare, with a few dozen confirmed cases at most, and also probably because people don't

run to the doctor if their memory is too good.

But the few people who do have hyperthymesia can remember basically everything they did,

every day, starting from when they were about ten years old -- which is around the time

when they start to realize their memory might be different from other people's.

So if you're over 10 and you haven't noticed it yet, you probably don't have it.

Most people with the condition also have these memories very closely linked to calendar dates.

Name any event they've experienced and they can tell you the day and date — or vice

versa, telling you what they did on any date you pick from their lives.

The first discovered case was a woman named Jill Price.

She wrote a letter to some neurologists asking for help, and hoped understanding her condition

might help others.

When the doctors followed up, they asked tons of questions about her memories of her life.

Like, without warning they asked her to report every Easter she could remember since 1980.

Within 10 minutes, she wrote a list of every date that Easter fell on for over 20 years,

plus memories from each of those dates, and only made one mistake.

Now, some people with hyperthymesia have used it to their advantage.

A man named Brad Williams used his skill to become a contestant on Jeopardy, and another

used his memory to win vacations through trivia contests.

Another famous example is the actress Marilu Henner, who appeared on the TV show TAXI,

then became an advisor for Unforgettable.

Not everyone finds the condition easy to manage, though.

Just imagine remembering every single time you've ever said anything you regretted

in excruciating detail.

It's bad enough suddenly cringing because you remembered that time you sneezed all over

your middle-school crush.

Price, the subject of that first case study, reported that her memory was a burden.

She said it was driving her crazy, running her entire life through her head every day,

and she would keep diaries to try to stop thinking about the memories.

And in the 12 years since she first called attention to her amazing memory, scientists

have discovered some clues about why this might be — although research is scarce since

the condition is so rare.

In 2012, a group of researchers found 11 people with the condition who were willing to participate

in the study, and compared them to a control group on a variety of memory test, along with

scans of their brains.

Among other things, they found that the people with hyperthymesia scored higher on a measure

of obsessive behaviors than the control group did.

Things like hoarding, needing organization in their environment, excessive collections,

or avoiding germs.

Their brain scans told a similar story.

A few regions of the brain associated with autobiographical memory, like the temporal

lobe, were either a different shape or showed more activity in the people with hyperthymesia.

But they also showed less grey matter concentration in places similar to what you see in people

with obsessive compulsive disorder.

The researchers were quick to point out that none of the people with hyperthymesia had

been diagnosed with OCD, but it suggests that the two conditions might have a common mechanism

in the brain.

Plus, it seems like in some ways their memory is just as bad as the rest of us.

People with hyperthymesia did much better on a quiz about various dates — they could

name the day of the week 97% of the time, they could name a verifiable event 87% of

the time, and produce an autobiographical event 71% of the time.

All of which was better than the control group, who were down near the single digits.

But on most other memory tests, like for short-term and working memory, they did about as well

as the control group — things like seeing how many meaningless digits they could memorize,

or drawing an abstract design from memory.

And more recent research shows they're also about as susceptible to false memories as

the general public.

In a 2013 study, researchers compared twenty volunteers with hyperthymesia to a control

group on a few tasks that typically produce false memories in a lot of people.

One was a test that usually convinces people they saw a word on a list when it wasn't actually

there, and another involved the suggestion that they saw a video of the plane that crashed

into a field on 9/11, even though there's no video footage of it that we know of.

And overall, everyone did... about the same.

The people with hyperthymesia even did a little worse with the false memory of the plane.

Those results suggest that having hyperthymesia isn't like having a tape recorder in your

brain.

You still need to reconstruct memories when you think about them, just like the rest of

us — you're just really, really good at it for whatever reason.

And you also probably know that even though the rest of the world tends to think hyperthymesia

is the most amazing thing ever, being able to remember every single thing that's ever

happened to you isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Facebook Continued Sharing User Data After They Promised Not To - Duration: 4:18.

Facebook is once again found itself in hot water for lying to the public, not just the

American public, actually the public all around the world about their data harvesting process.

In 2014 Facebook swore up and down that they were done allowing app developers and third

party software programs that were a part of Facebook to access the personal data of users

and everyone on their friends list that happened in 2014.

They said we're done.

It'll never happen again.

Well, according to documents actually released in the British parliament yesterday, Facebook

still does that and not only did they continue doing that after they swore they weren't going

to do it anymore, they actually had many companies reach out to them and they told those companies

according to emails released in British parliament that they were going to make sure everything

was taken.

Okay.

Uh, it was going to be okay.

They were taking care of.

Some of those companies include Netflix, Lyft and airbnb and other independent app developers

that were also tied into Facebook.

Here's a, here's some of the emails.

This is from app developer dating platform by do said, we have been compelled to write

to you to explain the hugely detrimental effect that removing friend permissions will call

us to are hugely popular and profitable applications, Baidu and hot or not a Facebook.

Then wrote back to them, this was January 2015 saying, uh, there we have a new application

programming interface known as API.

It's going to actually let selected apps go ahead and bypass our new rule system.

Basically, they created a separate algorithm within Facebook that allowed certain app developers,

the one who's ones who curried favor with Facebook, I guess to still access your data,

the data of your friends, the data of your friends' friends because they all got white

listed through this secret algorithm that nobody knew about.

A Zuckerberg also in the documents released yesterday, uh, was talking about how can we

profit more off sharing users' data if you needed any more evidence that Facebook and

Zuckerberg in particular in particular, just horrible individuals.

This is it, right?

I mean, this kind of seals the deal here.

Facebook doesn't care about your privacy.

Facebook doesn't care about protecting your data.

They care about profiting from it.

That is what Mark Zuckerberg himself says in these new documents and they made sure

to create a separate little algorithm that only certain programs and apps knew about

that they could use to be white listed, to get access to everything that you have to

offer and everything that all of your friends have to offer because it was profitable because

there was money to be made and that is the only thing that motivates these people.

You know, they might've started as idealists wanting to create this social network and

be cool and popular, but somewhere along the way and perhaps even before it began, they

began.

They became corrupted by the money and that's what we're looking at right now.

Something has to happen with Facebook.

This is absolutely out of control.

Not just that they're letting people without our permission access our data, but because

they're profiting from it and they lied to us about it.

Regulations need to be put in place that expressly for bids, any social media company from sharing

your data with anyone on this planet, unless you have expressly given permission, not just

blanket permission, go ahead and share it, but permission every single time some company

comes out there wanting your data and the data of everybody you know, that's what needs

to happen and if that's not going to happen then because of the massive privacy issues

and the decay of public trust, then perhaps it's time for the government to step in and

say, Facebook, you're no longer allowed to do business here in the United States.

Top 5 Best Indie Game Hidden Gems - December 2018 - Duration: 7:15.

hey there it's Peter and today on that indie gaming we're carrying on with our

hidden gem series looking at five games we love and think should be played by

more people see anything you like be sure to let us know down in the comments

our number five is out in early access and while parts of it look like

something from two generations ago dear goodness it's such a blast to play we

picked it up on a whim for no other reason than seeing the characters

reminded us of playing Goldeneye way back when that was a time when four

player co-op on a tiny TV was the very top of home entertainment in fairness

Goldeneye may well have had better graphics as Max in an action it's also

brilliantly low quality and clearly something of an ongoing concern with

bugs aplenty but that doesn't matter one little bit on a fan / penny spent ratio

for our mind it's one of the most satisfying shooters of the year would be

looking as far back as titanfall 2 for something offering similar levels of

enjoyment while low res it's full of character with the levels all be they

minimal to the extreme give way to some exceptional running gunning and kicking

gameplay be the shooting a goon in the face with a shotgun or stamping on the

knee of another or before charging headlong through a window looking to

give the next bit of good news to the other blocky folks who should do really

well to get out of your way with between 1 and 2 years left in early access max

and an action is something most definitely to watch

at number four Florence takes a rare look into the

theme of love in what's best described as being an interactive novel without

text or dialogue while all using pretty but understated illustrations it's

played by way of small interactive tasks you must complete to move to the next

section these are generally reasonably easy although we didn't find them boring

or mundane into woven with the love aspect you have another tale exploring

gender roles in which florence holds back on her creative talents to support

the man to whom she's romantically involved florence came out way back in

the first quarter of the year and if you fancy something clever sweet and

different this one's definitely worth taking a look at the heck's at number

three out on pc this october well it's one of those games it's hard to discuss

without giving away too much so we'll tread very carefully coming from the

same creator as pony island it ever so smartly puts a number of genres into a

mixing bowl from which we then get a story looking to mirror how we consume

and interact with video games the hex is about six protagonists from six

different games you've gathered together one stormy night in a pub deep in the

woods the hex is played out in six chapters each focusing on the characters

one by one with a murder-mystery storyline tying everything together

while moving slowly to begin with the hex builds tension as things get going

and come the end after eight or so hours of play the individual stories merge

into something we feel is worth getting into as again we said at the start this

one's difficult to explain without going into too much spoilery detail however we

will say it's also very very matter if you liked papers please not tonight or

the stanley parable the hex is one for you

number two Akane is as should be reasonably obvious a top-down arcade

arena slasher with full-on blaring cyberpunk visuals and huge amounts of

gore you and your enemies die with a single hit although you have enough

tools at your disposal to have the upper edge you have a sword and gun and you

can alternate between the two so while your shooter recharges you can set about

hacking and slashing the multitude on the screen to a bloody pulp if you

string together enough kills you can charge your special attacks or even your

super special attack to do naturally enough even more damage the pixel art

well quite frankly it's utterly gorgeous and the soundtrack and effects well

they're fully in keeping with the on-screen action the controls are also

beautifully tight although the lack of controller support and we played this

was annoying but not a deal-breaker yes it doesn't have too much to offer really

in the way of content if you want to get into it and replayability is somewhat

minimal although look at the price at under $5 it really does offer fans of

the slasher type of game some real value for money we loved it we hope you do too

the last hidden gem of 2018 and therefore the number one for December

Galaxy champions TV hit the PC in early September one of the consistent elements

to our gaming habits over the years comes from us leading towards twin-stick

shooters in all honesty they probably get a little more than their fair share

of coverage hey one of them came in the runners-up place in our game of the year

rundown last year Smash TV of course remains one of our favorite games of all

time and Galaxy champions TV handsomely borrows from it while also adding enough

to make it more than a cut-and-paste copy the most noticeable variation

coming by way of character leveling and upgrade weapon mechanics Galaxy

champions let's be honest isn't utterly brutal experience but man is fun it

plays so fast and frantic we found the two-player co-op mode to be so high on

the chaos meter there's a period of adjustment where you're hand to eye

coordination needs to step up a notch to make sense of the on-screen antics the

default screen shake is also for our tastes way too blurry and once you dial

it down in the settings the faint sense of nausea Julie passes with 15 different

varieties of enemies and 3 bosses is plenty to keep twin-stick fans happy and

while the whole TV aspect to the game is lost on us there's little sense in the

way of playing for an audience galaxy champions is another go-to game

of its type so see anything here you might like to play let us know down in

the comments and be sure to hit that like button and if you haven't already

subscribing is really simple just hit the subs button and the notification

bell to stay up to date with our 3 to 4 weekly videos we really appreciate you

watching and look forward to seeing you here back soon get indie gaming for more

Coloring Christmas Ornaments & GIVEAWAY! | Color with Me Ep. 8 - Duration: 4:32.

- Hello, hello, hello, my friends.

Kaitlyn here, and you know what time it is.

It's time to color with me. (chimes ring)

(Kaitlyn laughs)

(fast version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen")

Alright, guys.

It's another coloring craft this time,

and Michaels is back at it

with these adorable $2 wooden ornaments.

They cam with these rinky-dink little markers,

but no, we're gonna use fancy markers and see how that goes.

We'll start out with this little sloth

sleeping on a candy cane,

and of course, Finn had (record scratches)

to make his presence known.

Seriously, cat, what are you doing?

I'll make the sloth a lovely shade of lavender

and try not to color over these tiny fur dots,

which proved to be a bit difficult,

then I thought I was making Mr. Sloth's face a light shade

of pink, but markers are liars,

and it turned out to be a darker shade of magenta,

but you only get one chance, so I went with it.

I finally found the lighter shade of pink I was looking for,

and made that the eye color.

Next we'll color in the red stripes on the candy cane,

and then give Mr. Sloth a nice teal and blue hat.

Of course, he's got a matching scarf too,

because he's very fashionable, and we're done.

Ta-da!

What a cutie.

Next up, we have this happy little Christmas tree.

Bob Ross would be so proud.

Trees are green, so duh,

but I did use this fancy blending marker

that really bled into the wood, which I wasn't expecting,

so I had to be extra careful with all the little details.

Next, I added some shading on the tree,

just because that was a whole heck of a lot of green.

Then I colored in the happy little star

a bright, shining yellow, added some pink cheeks

because our tree is a little shy,

and gave it some yellow and red Christmas lights.

Finally, a cat in a Christmas sweater.

I'm going to make him a gray tabby,

because obviously making him white doesn't exactly work

here without paint.

So, he's like Finn's brother or something.

We'll give him some cute pink ears,

and I have to remember that my bright pink marker is

out of ink, and I just need to throw it away.

I used one of those blending markers again

for the darker gray stripes, and it bled everywhere,

but I actually kind of like the effect it had,

at least within the coloring.

I could have done without the bleed outside the lines.

Next, I probably need to work on my color theory,

but let's color in the sweater and hope for the best.

I went with reds and pinks for the tiny details,

and then a nice icy blue and kind of sea foam green

for the sweater's main body colors.

I actually liked it by the end, though,

even if I was taking some risks with the colors there.

(sings an ah sound) They're all so cute,

and you can't forget, gotta sign them on the back.

(festive piano music)

Oh my goodness.

These are so cute.

I love them.

I think Finn wearing a sweater is probably my favorite,

and because it's a season of giving,

I wanna give away (chimes ring)

these beautiful little ornaments that I made

so you can hang it on your tree,

or just put it up in your room somewhere,

and think about how wonderful iIMAGINEblank is

when you look at it.

Something to remind you to watch my videos.

So, if you want to enter to win one of the ornaments,

here's the process.

Make sure that

you're subscribed (chimes ring)

to my channel.

That is number one, and you have

the notification bell on, (bell rings)

although I can't tell if you've done that or not,

but I just highly recommend it.

Next, make sure that you are following me

on Instagram, (bell chimes)

because that is the place that I probably post

the second-most amount, and I've been doing stories a lot

more recently, which has actually been quite fun,

and you get to see more of my day in the life

and also lots of my cat, and the third step is

on this video, leave a comment telling me

which of the ornaments is your favorite

and also your Instagram handle so that I can message you

if you win, because YouTube makes everything complicated,

and there's no real way for me to contact you directly

here anymore, so it's gotta be on Instagram. (laughs)

You have until Wednesday the, what day is it?

You have until Wednesday the 5th.

No, that's this Wednesday, hold on. (laughs)

you have until Wednesday the 12th to enter,

and then I will announce the three winners

on next Thursday's video.

Also, as a side note, I sent out Christmas cards

to iIMAGINEblank subscribers last year,

and I'd like to do it again this year.

So if you want a Christmas card from me and Finnegan

then make sure you fill out the form that's at the top of the description.

All right guys! I hope you are having a happy holiday season!

And I will see you guys next Thursday! Bye! (blows kiss) (laughs)

(acoustic cover of "The First Noel")
