2016 saw 'democratic' decisions which shook the world.

Contradictory and unexpected decisions.

I see it as the sign of an antiquated system in desperate need of an overhaul to bring

it into the 21st century.

Which is why I set out to research the alternative.

Democracy Squared is intended to be a snapshot in time, because in the time it takes to go

to print/eBook, some of the content will already be outdated.

And that's part of the story, of a world that is changing, where the very foundations

are shaking.

This isn't a rigorous and detailed academic textbook on tech democracy and evolutionary

theory (you can Google that).

This book is meant to offer a provocative perspective.

A kind of documentary.

Just not the kind of revolution we're used to seeing on TV.

No bricks through windows, tear gas being sprayed at kids in hoodies, cars being set

alight, police running with shields.

This is about changing the deepest, most fundamental and underlying systems of the modern world.

This isn't about left and right, democrats and republicans, ins and outs, blacks and

whites.

This is about creating webs not walls.

This is about revolutionising democracy.

In the past 25 years, the internet has changed pretty much everything we know.

Almost anybody can become a media mogul.

Build a hotel empire.

Become an A-List musician.

Almost anybody can be almost anything.

Except a politician.

The internet is often heralded as the great disrupter and democratiser of everything in

modern society.

Except for one thing: democracy itself.

This book is about revolutionaries around the world who are about to take the establishment

by storm.

They are taking on the biggest challenge the Internet has faced to date: democratising

democracy.

You may not have heard of them all, but they exist.

Whether its 'Podemos' in Spai' in Italy, the 'NetParty' in Argentina, or the 'Pirate

Party' in Iceland, there is a new breed of activists around the world using technology

to usher in an era where 'we the people' can be the genuine social contributors we

are entitled to be.

This revolution promises moral and monetary upheaval.

It promises a move from the peaks and troughs of boom and bust economics and a breakaway

from divisive propaganda and rhetoric.

Internet leaves in its wake.

These alternatives use technology to decentralise basic human notions of trust, freedom and

equality.

They could create a society which constantly iterates on lessons of the past, always evolving

the way in which we live together.

An alternative which gives minorities a voice.

Which improves equality in society.

Which is more in-line with our basic human rights.

so we can democratise democracy and help our humanity thrive by liberating people and nations
