Not too smart smart home - Duration: 7:30.

- The term smart home gets thrown around a lot

because companies love marketing to you,

but what smart home basically means is a connected house.

That the gadgets in your house can kinda talk to each other

using wireless communications like WiFi or Bluetooth.

Your thermostat can talk to a plug,

can talk to your lights,

that's pretty much it.

There's a whole range of smart homes though.

Everything from being able to utter a command

and have the entire house change around that

to just being able to turn your heat on

when you're on your way home from your phone.

We're gonna talk about that one,

the not-so-smart smart home,

but just like a modern update to where you already live.

My house has DSL, so it comes in through the phone line.

I wish there was cable modem, there isn't,

so my router's gotta be here.

This is what the phone company gives you for a router.

The problem is that the wireless signal

gets weaker as it gets away from your base station.

Don't settle for that.

These things are okay,

but especially if you're gonna have a smart home,

you need a really really robust WiFi setup.

This is something from a company called eero, E-E-R-O,

and it's a router system

that's actually using something called a mesh network,

which means its got a bunch of little nodes

scattered throughout my house

that pick up and amplify the wireless signal.

This is important because a lot of your smart home gadgets

are gonna be talking to each other

via the wireless network,

just helps the communication between them.

(upbeat drum music)

You gotta control your smart home from somewhere.

Used to be that you could have a bunch of connected gadgets

and everyone would have a different app,

or website, or whatever you had to play with.

But now there are a couple of really good options

for just controlling something from one specific place.

We're gonna use Google Home,

because Google Home is a really easy streamlined app,

it's free,

and it works with most of the good smart home products.

This is how I can turn on the lights from a vacation,

like flick 'em on and off

so robbers think that I'm here playing with my lights.

Or I can turn the heat up a little bit

if I know it's gonna get really cold out.

We're gonna keep it pretty simple today

and we're just gonna add stuff like a thermostat.

Set up new devices.

JMF house, that's my house.

Oh, see, this is where it all goes wrong.

It's looking for devices and we haven't set up any devices.

So, let's go set up some devices.

Hunter Set n' Save 1, 1993 vintage,

obviously a legendary thermostat.

And when its got this broken-ass LCD in it,

even more sought after.

But just for the purposes of this video,

we're gonna replace it with something from this century,

with a 2018 vintage Nest.

The idea here is create this main zones thermostat

for the center of the house.

Nest is a motion-sensing thermostat,

it lets you program things in through a smartphone app,

it's really super streamlined.

What we're gonna do though, when we take this off,

there's a little bit of a roulette wheel situation,

which is do we have a C wire or a common wire?

Common wire pulls power from the furnace

in order to keep your thermostat on.

These old ones, they use a battery.

Oh shit, I just turned off my thermostat.

If it gets cold, I'm sorry.

Well, modern thermostats are on WiFi,

they're motion-sensing,

they're running all sorts of programs,

so they need a constant stream of power.

I'm done.

Ah, I'm just kidding.

I think we're gonna need a Phillips head screwdriver.

Honestly, you can use a needle nose pliers for everything

so you might as well have one of those on you

anytime it wants to connect to WiFi or whatever.

So, once you put it on your home network,

it's gonna update its software

as most little computer things do.

Once it's charged up,

we're gonna set it up with the Google Home app.

One of the most common things people like to smart homeify

are their lights.

You can change colors sometimes for mood light,

you can set up actions that dim everything

for a home theater experience,

you can freak out your Airbnb guests.

This is a bulb from a company called LIFX

and it's an LED light bulb,

but it also has a WiFi receiver in it.

And these things, you can screw 'em into your light

and then just control 'em with one of your apps

like Google Home or Amazon or anything.

It's super easy.

So now I'm just trying to get everything into Google Home.

Right, the whole idea here is to control everything

from this one app.

So I'm now adding Nest to Google Home,

which is a little harder than it should be.

I'm sure they're unifying this stuff

but in order to add your Nest to your Google Home,

currently you've got to go to Google Assistant,

go into services, go into home control,

find Nest, link it with Google.

So, it's telling me my accounts are linked now,

which is great.

Alright, so now I've got a pretty good smart home base.

Nothing fancy, just be able to set the temperature

from anywhere and have the energy efficiency benefits

with a newer thermostat,

and then the beginning of a smart light system.

I think I'm gonna get some more of these LIFX bulbs.

And that's really enough for people like me

who just want a connected house that's modern,

but not necessarily something super duper wiz bang fancy.

Because after all, who wants to just like bark

at their house all the time?

Not me.

Google, turn off the cardboard lamp.

WE25X217 - Replacing Your GE Dryer's Propane Gas Conversion Kit AP2044396 PS267591 - Duration: 14:50.

hi my name is Bill and today I'm gonna show you how to install a propane gas

conversion kit the reason why you might have to do this is because your

appliance has natural gas and you need to convert it to a propane for this

repair we'll be using a quarter-inch nut driver a flathead screwdriver a Philips

head screwdriver a screwdriver with an s2 bit in it about 3/8 inch wrench and a

pair of channellocks warning before doing any repairs please disconnect your

power source so this is the appliance that we'll be using in this

demonstration it's a GE keep in mind yours at home

might look a little bit different than what we've got here but the same

techniques should still apply make sure you turn your gas off so we're going to

start by turning our driver around so we'll need to do is remove these screws

up here in order to get the control panel off so now that we've got the back

unscrewed we can just slide the control panel over and we're gonna lift it up

and we're going to put it back in this space right here now we're going to open

up our dryer door and on either side there are two screws going straight up

so we need to remove those screws now and we're going to be using a Phillips

head screwdriver to take these screws out

now that we've got those screws out we can take the top off all we have to do

is just lift up and pull back slightly on the top and we'll set that off to the

side so now that I've got these screws out I want to close up our front and

dryer door now I've got two more screws that screw into the front panel and I'm

just removing those as well and when you remove them just make sure that when you

get close to having them come out you catch them because you don't want to

fall down into the dryer there now that we've got those screws out we

can tilt the front panel forward and once we've got it tilted forward and

separated from the drum we can lift it up over the tabs on the bottom and just

turn it like so because we've got some wires attached to it as well so now I'm

going to do is I'm going to detach some of these wires here first when I want to

detach is this black one that's connected right over here and to do that

I'm just going to use a flathead screwdriver

I want to pry up there we go now I've got this plastic guard that's in my way

a little bit so what I'll do is just pull it slightly out like that so it's removed

from the frame and now I can move it out of my way again just don't move it too

far you don't want to break it move it just enough so that I can leave my

screwdriver and pry these wires off

and we just need to unplug our white wire and we'll just pull that

straight out there so now I was gonna remove this last wire here and once

again just pulling it straight out so right on top of the drum here we've got

this piece which is our belt there so in order to get it off

I want to reach inside of our dryer here and I've got to get my arm in that

little hole we're gonna have to push up on the lever to release the tension and

reach in with our other hand and now we can just take that right off so now that

we've removed the belt from the pulley you can lift up on the belt that'll help

us pick up the drum so right here is the entire burner assembly so we're gonna

have to start taking that apart in order to change to liquid propane and once you

have that last screw out you can pull out the burner and now we're going to

use a flathead screwdriver to remove this piece here

and now we're going to unscrew the base here so we're using an s2 bit to unscrew

these screws on the bottom here and now we're going to unplug these coils here

and those just pull straight out so now you've got a tape off of there you can

get the entire piece out now I'll use a 3/8 inch wrench and I'll loosen up our

orifice and once it's loose I can unscrew the rest away by hand now I'll

loosen this with a screwdriver to and then I can finish on screwing that by

hand as well now you can grab your liquid propane conversion kit and if you

don't have one already you can find it on our online store and don't forget to

put these stickers on your appliance somewhere to make note that it has been

converted to liquid propane and in case you plan on converting to natural gas in

the future you should keep the parts from your natural gas installation and

put those off to the side somewhere so on our burner here you'll see that

there's just a hole right in there and for this particular burner we just have

to line up that hole with this metal limiter that we've got here so once

that's lined up screw it in place and to screw it into place you're just going to

need to you the quarter inch nut driver and screw that down so they'll also see

here on the instructions it shows two different kinds of shutters that are on

the burners ours is just the one with the hole and it's not adjustable if you

do have one that has an adjustable slot on it though you're gonna want to close

that slot halfway and then tighten the screw down so it's half way over

Ben instead of the whole way open it only stays open the full way with the

natural gas for the propane it's shut halfway just like this that's why they

provide this extra attachment right here that we've installed now I can put the

orifice on by hand and what's that screwed in all the way I'll finish

tightening that up with our wrench and now I'll insert the pressure gauge hose

there and once that's tightened up as much as I canget it use your screwdriver

finishing up now I can put the burner back on you just put that on at an

angle until it goes into place and then line up all the screw holes and once the

screw holes are all lined up let's screw it back in place now that that's all

screwed in we can put our assembly back into place and we're gonna slide our

base into the slots down there on the bottom and then line up our screw holes

and screw it all back in again

now we can plug our wires back in and when you put the drum back in you're

going to want to make sure that shaft goes into that hole right there there we

go so it's a little bit hard to line it up when you can't really see it back

there but you can do the best you can and might take a couple of tries to get

it exactly in place there we go after a couple tries you should be able to get

it in there and you'll see that the rim of the drum is inside the frame of the

dryer there now to put the drum back on we're going to take the belt we're gonna

go on the other side of the wheel here just like this and we're going to lift

it up keeping this all together and then loop the belt around the shaft here and

make sure everything's not straight there we go and then everything should

be able to spin freely now just like that we're gonna reattach that to the

middle this is a white wire that goes up along the edge of the door and goes to

the light so that's plugged in now and now with this last one

attach it right there go now I'm gonna put this plastic piece back into place

so right into that slot right there and we'll plug our last wire in and you're

just gonna make sure that these slight bumps there line up with the holes

outside that fits in nicely and now I'll put the front panel back on so now we're

going to line up our front panel with the tabs on the bottom we're going

to set those into those tabs and stand the door up as we do that we're also

gonna line up with the drum and the inside of that plastic piece on the

washer is going in the drum and we've also got these metal tabs on the side

that are going into the slots on the frame so once those are all lined up and

the panel is flush we can screw it back on so now we're going to get our screw

started in this hole here and then after we get it started

screw it down nice and tight same thing on this side start our screw into by

hand and use our Philips head screwdriver to finish the job now I'm

gonna put the top back on and you'll see there are two tabs sticking out from the

top there gonna be two slots that correspond with them so I want to line

all those up so after I line those up make sure that the tabs going to the

slots just like that and there's a couple on the front as well so now we

can screw that back in so we'll put in our screw and with that little tiny hole

at the top you should be able to line up the screw with the hole that it belongs

to there once you got that started a little bit there screwing it

now we're going to put our lint filter back into place since that came out a

little while ago now we can close our dryer door now we can line our control

panel back up and slide that back over and set that back into place and now we

can screw it back in now we can turn our dryer back around and then once we do

that we'll plug everything back in and your repair is complete

now we can turn our gas back on finally don't forget to plug in your appliance
