What's up, guys?

For Complex News, I'm Justin Block.

Can you believe it's already been a year since Kevin Durant decided to leave the Oklahoma

City Thunder to team up with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green on the Golden

State Warriors?

It's hard to believe it's been 365 days since we spent the first half of the July

4th holiday refreshing our Twitter feeds and impatiently waiting for KD to make his big

announcement.

But despite the time that has passed, there are a lot of NBA fans who still haven't

forgiven KD for signing with the Warriors.

In the months leading up to last summer's NBA free agency, it was pretty clear that

KD was going to, at the very least, test out the market.

Reports emerged in March indicating that KD wanted to be courted by teams so that he could

see what other options he might have.

KD downplayed those reports and said, "I'm not that type of person," when he was asked

about them.

But by the time June rolled around, new reports proved that KD was going to meet with a handful

of NBA teams before deciding which one to sign with.

A few days before KD was set to become a free agent on July 1, ESPN reported KD was going

to meet with at least six teams.

His representatives had scheduled meetings with the Warriors, Spurs, Celtics, Heat, Clippers,

and of course, the Thunder.

The Knicks, Wizards, and Lakers were also reportedly trying to secure meetings with

KD but were unsuccessful.

It was shaping up to be exactly what KD wanted, based on the reports from March.

KD had so many meetings lined up that it seemed like it was probably going to take him at

least a week to make a final decision about where he was going to sign.

One report from The Oklahoman even suggested he might not announce his decision until July

9, which would have led to endless amounts of speculation and rumors.

But once the free agency period started, Yahoo!

Sports reporter Adrian Wojnarowski revealed KD was going to make his decision by July

4, and in the end, KD stuck to that plan.

KD spent three days meeting with all of the aforementioned teams, and there were all kinds

of conflicting reports about his meetings.

There were reports about how his initial meeting with the Thunder on July 1 "went well,"

but there was also a report that came out a short time later that indicated a meeting

with the Warriors had gone "very well."

It was hard to figure out who to believe and what direction KD was leaning in.

As the days went on, though, the Thunder and Warriors emerged as the favorites to land

KD's services, and after KD met with Oklahoma City one last time on July 3, NBA writers

started reporting that KD would be announcing his decision the following day.

The stage was set for KD to make one fan base incredibly happy—and another incredibly

angry.

But he probably couldn't have imagined the backlash he would receive once he made his

announcement.

KD later admitted he waited until the very last minute to make up his mind.

But when he woke up on July 4, he mulled over his decision one last time and then took to

his Twitter account to reveal which team he would be playing for during the 2016-17 NBA

season.

He sent out a link to a post he had written for The Players' Tribune called "My Next

Chapter" and that post immediately sent shock waves through the NBA community.

In it, KD revealed he would be leaving the Thunder and signing with the Warriors—and

many fans did not respond well to it.

Thunder fans started posting videos of them burning their KD jerseys right away.

"Kevin Durant, we blew up your jersey"

NBA fans as a whole started wondering why the league would even bother holding a 2016-17

NBA season since it seemed like the Warriors were going to win the title easily.

"So should we just give the warriors the championship title now or wait for them to

kill every team?"

The words "Damn KD" climbed to the top of Twitter's trending topics.

And even NBA players were shocked by the KD development.

Some said the Warriors would be unstoppable with KD, while others took not-so-subtle shots

at KD for signing with the Warriors.

"If u can't beat um join um"

Not everyone was mad at KD.

Warriors fans were obviously thrilled with his decision and couldn't wait to see him

suit up for the team.

They were coming off the heartbreak of watching the Warriors blow a 3-1 Finals lead to the

Cavaliers and knew KD would give them the best chance to bounce back and win another

title.

But for most people outside of the Bay Area, July 4, 2016—which is a day that should

have been celebrated with beer, burgers, and fireworks—was anything but a celebration.

And for those fans, this 4th of July is just another reminder of how KD changed the entire

landscape of the NBA with one decision.

Even one year removed from it, it's still hard for them to believe KD went with the

Warriors.
