This is a public service announcement
to all restaurant owners, food truck gurus and street food hustlers,
with menu item descriptions that have full backstories and a ridiculous amount of adjectives.
Look at me... come in close....
Stop it.
What is it with all these food spots that have menus that read like Nicholas Sparks novels?
It's like everybody assembled together, forming an unofficial association of hipster restaurants,
and went "hmmm... what will make our food seem more cultured than it actually is?"
Do you know how many burgers spots I've been to in LA with descriptions like "hand-crafted,
organic farm-raised vegetarian-fed beef, pan seared and topped with artisanal field greens,
hot house tomatoes and organic smoked gouda cheese, all locally grown and farmed within
the last three days!"
(From the movie "Norbit") "Uh, yes.
For a limited time only, we are proud to present to you our Barbecue Baby Back Horseradish
Mustard and Peanut Butter-encrusted Ribs, with a slight Jägermeister infusion, sprinkled
with chamomile leaves, with a horseradish and dandelion salad, on a bed of rice."
Like get outta here with all that, man!
And stop listing your fries as "Pommes frites" if the rest of your cuisine is not French!
And whyyyyyyy are restaurants so obsessed with mason jars?!
It all started when a friend of mine was looking at the menu for Salt & Straw.
This isn't a knock on them because I'm pretty sure it's delicious… but their flavor descriptions
sound like they were written by a 1-900 number operator turned romance novelist.
Roasted Strawberry & Toasted White Chocolate - A fruity, rosey love story set stage in
frozen scoops of deliciousness.
Fresh Oxnard strawberries show their best side when roasted, releasing their sweetness,
rich berry-ness, and dark fruity-ness under hot hot, sweltering heat.
White chocolate, on the other hand, is a bit more mellow… we lightly toast the chocolate
until the milky chocolate begins to caramelize… low and slow baby.
Are you kidding me?
Where is the holy water?
Then we have the "chicken & waffle" spots, but not like regular soul food restaurants...
I'm talking about the ones that serve "vegetarian fried chicken" like that's a real thing
with "rosemary & mushroom waffles".
That's not even the worst thing I saw; that crown goes to the "grilled octopus"
WHAT?!
And Vegans!
Stop trying to convert me.
"Come on, Oronde; try it!
It's better for your health and the environment!"
And I get it, I do!
I don't eat a lot of red meat, I don't eat pork
(except the occasional slice of pepperoni pizza).
I respect veganism... but I'm allergic to nuts
and sesame.
95% of your food would kill me.
Prime example: I was suckered into going to Cafe Gratitude here in LA,
and the menu legit says
"If you have a food or beverage allergy (particularly to nuts or seeds)
we therefore recommend that you not dine with us.
Café Gratitude cannot be responsible for any injury, loss or damage claimed by any
guest with a food or beverage allergy who consumes our food or beverages, regardless
of the circumstances."
I can't live off lettuce, so with all due respect, back off!
Don't scowl at me when I eat my grilled chicken, and I won't side eye you while you eat your
cashew cheese pizza.
I kinda went off on a tangent there, but here's the moral of the story:
I get it.
You're hip and creative.
You're trying cool new things to appeal to your audience.
It's Marketing 101, and you're just trying to make it.
But all your ambiguous food descriptions do is irritate people who, like me, just want
to eat and couldn't care less about your creative writing skills.
If I have to use my critical thinking skills just to decipher your weird culinary
prose, I'll probably never come back.
Now if the food is bomb, that's another story.
But if your food is just regular, and you're trying to jazz it up: cut it out.
Keep it simple.
