Youtube daily Jul 7 2017

I just realized I forgot to put in my SD card into this sound recording device, so this

is take number two.

Also, this studio space is a mess right now, so bear with me for this one.

I am still sick right now, although I'm almost 100% again.

In today's video, I'm going to be talking about my first impressions with the Google Home for Canadians.

Now, for those in the know, Google Home actually came out last year in November, in the 'States.

Well, the Google Home just dropped here in Canada last month.

So, let's talk about that.

Now, I'm going to divide this first impressions video into two parts; the good and the bad.

Starting off with the good.

We're going to talk about the speakers because in my opinion, they are the most important

component next the the microphone.

If you look on the bottom of the unit under the base, you'll find three speakers facing

in three different directions.

These are high-end speakers and they get really loud.

They're also decently bassy and I'm no audiophile, but I think they sound great.

We typically keep our volume under 50% because we have no need for anything above that, but

if you live in a really large home, you can crank it up to 100% and it gets really loud.

In fact, even at 50%, sometimes worry that we might be disturbing the neighbours.

The microphone, I think works.

There's no real way of testing how good it is.

You can shout commands from pretty much anywhere within the room.

In fact, the Google Home might even pick up commands from nearby rooms if you're loud enough.

In terms of functionality, the Google Home work with a number of smart home devices.

This includes all the big players, like Nest, Lifx, WeMo, and most importantly for me, Philips Hue.

The Google Home app also lets you group these devices together into rooms.

And that enables you to say things like, "Hey (Google,) turn on the living room," and then

it'll turn on all the lights and everything in the living room.

"Turn off the living room."

"Sure, turning two lights off."

Very nice feature.

Being a product made by Google, obviously the Google Home also has great integration

with Google services, such as Google Play Music, which lets you make great use of those

high-end speakers.

Google Play Music sounds great on this thing.

However, if you're not a Google Play Music kind of person, and you prefer something like

Spotify, you can use that as well.

Unfortunately for some users, Apple Music is not supported on the Google Home; there's

no mention of it.

However, if you want to play Apple Music, you might as well get an Apple Pod.

As an alternative to those two options, if you want something free, you can also use

TuneIn Radio, which can play stations like 94.5 and whatever's on the air.

It sounds decent too, although there are a lot of advertisements and commercials.

One of the cooler functions, in my opinion, is the ability to cast things to your television

by using your voice.

You can cast YouTube videos to your TV via Google Cast.

So, say you want to watch your recommended videos.

You can just sit down on your couch, and shout "play some recommended videos."

"Okay, playing recommended YouTube videos on Living Room."

You can also cast specific videos if you know their titles.

And then obviously you get all the regular assistant capabilities, such as being able

to ask it for information, the weather, traffic, what's on your schedule, setting timers and

alarms, etc..

Now, let's talk about the negatives; what it needs to work on.

Now, my phone - the Nexus 6P, has been having a number of issues as of late.

And this might be an issue with my phone, or it can be an issue with the Google Home,

but...

When I use the "okay (Google)" command, and even when sometimes I use the "hey (Google)"

not only will the assistant on the Google Home activate,

but so will the Google Assistant on the phone.

It's not really that big of a deal, it's just really annoying.

Often times, I find myself having to call the Google Home two or even three times just

to get a response.

And usually, I'm talking with a moderately loud volume, kind of a like how I'm talking

right now.

However, when it does work, I have to say, it does work really well and it can even hear

me through walls sometimes, if I'm in another room, so that is nice.

This one's a bummer for us because we...

Well there's more than one Google user in this household, so it just makes sense to

have multi-user support.

I mean, we Canadians pretty much sound the same!

We speak English...

Like...

I mean, maybe there's some sort of legal issue which is what's actually keeping YouTube Red

outside of Canada...

The last one isn't really an issue with the Google Home itself, but more of the Google

Ecosystem - It's an issue with the Google Cast device.

I wish it had consumer electronics control for power management.

Now, if you're not familiar with consumer electronics control or CEC, it's a way for

your electronic devices to communicate with your television through the HDMI connection.

Now, Google [Cast] is able to override whatever input you're on by switching to the HDMI connection,

if you're using something else and you want to cast something.

Pretty useful.

Also, it can turn on your TV when it's powered off (by casting.)

Also very useful.

However, despite being able to do all that, it can't just turn on your TV and turn it off.

I mean, this sounds like really basic functionality, and it'd be really nice to just be able to

say "hey (Google,) turn on the TV."

Or, "hey (Google,) turn off the TV."

I feel like that could be something that could be added via a software update to the Google Cast.

Maybe.

But that is it in terms of my first impressions for the Google Home Canadian edition.

Do I think it was money well spent?

Well, I'm still trying to determine that.

I certainly know that it's not a device for everyone.

For those who do not have a connected home, this thing is pretty much useless; you can

just get a smartphone, and it has Google Assistant on it, and it'll do the same things.

If you want a nice speaker, you can get one for cheaper.

However, if you have a number of smart home devices, such as the Philips Hue bulbs, or

a Nest, WeMo, you can just ask your Google Home to do things for you, and it feels pretty

natural.

Alright, that is it for this video, thank you for watching.

If you want to see this whole setup being put together behind me, 'cause this is brand

new, stay tuned for Monday's VLOG.

I had to put the camera in the refrigerator 'cause it kept on overheating.

Lovers in Bloom | 木槿花开了 | 무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 - Ep.25 [SUB : ENG,CHN,IND / 2017.07.07] - Duration: 33:08.

Bong Uri,

why did you walk out of the kindergarten?

Everyone else was cooking with their dads

but I was all alone.

Uncle Suhyeok promised to come but he didn't.

Your teacher was going to help you.

She was busy helping other kids.

You should've waited.

Your teacher would've been right with you.

Do you know how worried she was?

I'm sorry.

How did you end up getting that far?

I was mad when I went outside.

But there was a puppy so I followed it.

Mom, can't I have a puppy?

No.

Raising you is hard enough for...

Fine.

I thought you'd say it was so much work.

You smart cookie, how did you know?

Inspector Cha, thank you.

Uri, why were you at the ATM phone?

I was about to call 112.

I know Mom's phone number,

but I didn't have a mobile phone

or money.

I thought you were just brave

but you're also smart, Uri.

Thank you.

Bong Uri.

(Episode 25) Now you're registered

on the Child Safety System, so no worries.

Geez, sir.

That alone won't make everything okay.

But it's reassuring like an insurance.

That's right. That's right.

Why are you so negative about everything?

See what happened today.

Our Chamsuri squad responded

and caught this rascal right away.

Thank you.

This one here's very cute and smart.

We should promote the Child Safety System.

Maybe we should visit all the kindergartens.

What's gotten into you, Officer Jang?

What do you mean?

I'm surprised you're saying we should go

instead of making them come here.

I always take the initiative.

The workday's almost over,

so you go on home with Uri.

Yes, sir.

Mom, can I stay here longer?

No.

You'll distract them from their work.

Say goodbye.

Goodbye.

Thank you, Senior Inspector Lee.

You're welcome.

You must be rattled.

Get changed, go home, and rest.

Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you, Inspector Cha.

Why'd you get her ice cream

instead of giving her a good scolding?

You don't say.

You made me cry a river.

That policeman let me use the walkie-talkie

and gave me a ride in a police car, grandma.

Mom, I really like him.

Unbelievable.

Good grief.

Who's she talking about?

Inspector Cha.

He's the one who found her.

Thank heavens.

We didn't lose her.

I know.

Mom, where does she get her cheekiness?

Where do you think?

She's your carbon copy.

No way, I was a little lamb.

Good grief. Little lamb, my foot.

You were such a troublemaker,

I wanted to put you back into my womb.

What a thing to say.

Geez. We should keep Uri in check

to avoid any catastrophes.

I can't believe this happened.

But everyone at the police station

was taken by how cute Uri is.

Good for you.

Yes. Like mother, like daughter.

Why is there always trouble?

I wonder why Suhyeok got tied up.

Yes, me too.

It's not like him to be irresponsible.

Why is there so much stuff?

And it's boring.

Just cut to the chase.

What's the key point here?

Oh...

I knew it. How will you sell something

you can't even explain?

This is the best you can do,

yet you were talking big.

Good grief.

I really thought you had something up your sleeve.

What a waste of time.

Take it.

I don't think I have to look at it.

Start with a question and end with an exclamation.

People will go there

wondering what it is

and leave after being moved.

Can't you give us another chance?

Why should I bother?

I don't see the need.

I'm finally starting to get

the crux of what you want.

Are you playing games with me?

Advertising is not about adding

but subtracting.

You must subtract and subtract

until you're left with only the key point.

I think you helped me see that.

We'll redo this if you give us the chance.

We'll keep it simple.

I'm back.

Why are you coming in together?

We ran into each other out front.

You should eat, right?

Yes. I'll go wash up first.

Why are you out here?

No one was around

when I woke up.

I had a headache

so I went to the pharmacy for a painkiller.

You should've told me.

You were sleeping soundly.

I didn't want to wake you.

I'm going to take the medicine.

(Personnel File / Moo Gunghwa)

(Passed the officer exam after husband's death)

Her husband was an officer too.

After he died in the line of duty,

Officer Moo Gunghwa went from being in admin

to passing the officer exam.

Don't you have any questions for me?

What kind of questions should I have?

Pardon? No, no.

Nothing, sir. Of course not.

Look at him sucking his lips.

Don't worry, sweetheart.

I'll find your daddy for you.

Doesn't he look like an angel?

Uri was like that too.

Yes. You might not be able to raise him.

However,

you shouldn't say those things you said

even if the rest of the world does.

You're his mother.

Why does she keep calling?

What?

Important matter?

What do you want?

I went to see Officer Moo Gunghwa.

What?

Officer Moo. The one you like so much.

I went to the police station to see her.

What business did you have with her?

Don't worry.

I was going to tell her

but I stopped myself.

Good grief.

What are you trying to pull?

Tell her what?

What happened that night.

What?

I want to hold back, but I feel so mistreated.

I can't let things stand like this.

You might not remember because you were drunk.

You better be careful if you don't want

to be humiliated as a rapist.

A rapist?

Have you lost your mind?

If you don't apologize and offer compensation,

I'm going straight to Officer Moo.

You know what that means, right?

Go ahead if you want to die.

You don't think I can do it?

This is the final warning.

Don't ever come into my sight again.

You know I have a temper, right?

If you misbehave like this again,

I swear I'll kill you.

Darn it.

Did you cry a lot?

Yes. A whole lot.

What it is that made you

break your promise with Uri?

I couldn't help it.

I was bracing to be chewed out,

but you're rather calm.

I'm not calm.

Come with me.

You guys will wake Uri.

Don't raise your voices.

Good night.

Here.

You'll kill me with alcohol?

Yes.

You must've been anxious, so drink.

Thanks for understanding.

I'm sorry for getting angry

and yelling at you over the phone.

You want to kill me with guilt.

Did you catch on?

It's my ultra-sophisticated strategy.

So what happened?

A client suddenly called me in.

So? Did it go well?

Well, not yet.

You made Uri and me cry because of it.

It has to go well.

Yes, of course.

Tomorrow at noon.

Exit No. 5 of the subway station.

I'll be in the car.

Okay. See you tomorrow.

(Seoul FC vs Daegu FC)

Here. Drink this.

You should have it instead of minding me.

Come to my office later.

What for?

Let's go out to eat,

watch a musical that you like,

and have a proper date.

I'm going to stay in today.

I'm tired.

Just come.

I'll send the driver home.

I don't want to go out.

Why are you getting so testy?

Must I be in a good mood if you are?

Don't my feelings matter?

It's exhausting to keep up with you.

Please leave me alone

until I feel better on my own.

Why can't she just let it go

instead of making it so difficult?

Geez.

Here. Warm chicken noodle soup.

Is it chicken again?

But you have to handle chicken all day.

I know.

Huijin turns to chicken to keep me healthy.

Thank you, grandmother.

Sure. Enjoy the noodles

and don't go on a drunken rant again.

Got it?

Yes, ma'am.

I'll down the soup and come to my senses.

I'm sorry, Taejin.

I'll never do it again. I promise.

It's okay. Don't worry about it.

You're the best, Taejin.

The noodles are especially chewy today,

so enjoy.

I bet we're the only family

still making noodles with a rolling pin.

Why didn't you just have the kids do it?

It's no big deal.

One must earn one's keep.

Yes, of course.

I kneaded and rolled it for my grandson.

Enjoy it.

Yes. Thank you, Grandma.

I helped you, right?

Of course.

Haechan has very strong arms.

What good is that? He's still immature.

He made noodles instead of studying.

Was I supposed to just watch great grandma

sweat from the hard work?

What kind of great grandson would I be?

My goodness.

You're just like your dad.

Right, grandmother?

But Huijin keeps saying he takes after Taejin.

It would be good if he did.

He would get good grades.

Thank you, grandma.

You said what I didn't dare utter.

Why isn't she here?

Right. Ms. Oh isn't here.

Ms. Oh.

Did she go to the bathroom?

Ms. Oh. Ms...

I'm not hungry.

Do you think little of my noodles?

Oh, no, Ms. Noh.

Never.

Just don't ask for more when you're done.

Eat your fill.

You must be tired from helping her with her walks.

- Let's eat. / - Okay.

Thank you.

Eat slowly.

You'll get indigestion otherwise.

Don't worry about me, grandma,

and chew thoroughly.

Grandma still sees Taejin as a baby.

Isn't that how you see Haechan?

Hurry up and eat,

my dear son.

I'm going to eat slowly.

Didn't you hear great grandma?

She says eating fast causes indigestion.

Wow. You're a culinary master, grandmother.

Yes. I would've regretted it if I didn't have it.

Sangcheol, is it no good?

You're barely eating.

No, no. It's very good.

It's very good.

I have something to say

to the whole family.

I'll be leaving after this month.

Thank you for everything.

I'll help Ms. Noh with her outpatient care

and then leave.

Oh, my. I hope I didn't ruin your dinner.

Please eat.

The broth is amazing. It's very smooth.

What are you doing?

Huh?

I have nothing to wear.

Even bums have special occasions to attend.

Buy some clothes.

Stop wearing T-shirts and sneakers all the time.

Where are you going?

Huh? I don't know.

You're meeting someone, but you don't know where?

Geez. It's not like that.

I owe someone at work.

I'm going to repay the debt.

It's purely business.

The person must still make you nervous

if you're worried about clothes.

Me?

It's been ages since you fussed over clothes.

I'm not fussing...

This should do.

Don't you have anything nicer?

My goodness. I should buy you some clothes.

Geez. I'm all set.

Buy yourself some clothes instead.

You said I look good in anything

thanks to my figure.

That's why you should flaunt it when you can.

Mom, confidence is the best fashion statement.

Suhyeok and I are quite good looking.

I have enough self-confidence, so don't worry.

I did bear fine-looking human beings.

Fit to be a beauty queen and a model.

You're too much.

Why are you so jumpy?

Here.

Tickets to a soccer game?

They're for today.

Wow.

You're really giving these to me?

Do you have a friend to take?

Of course.

All my friends love soccer.

But weren't you going to take someone on a date?

That's the vibe I'm getting.

Don't be late.

Okay.

Thanks, Uncle Taejin.

I'm eternally grateful.

Hey, Hyeonsu.

I got free soccer tickets.

Will you come with me?

Tonight at 7:00.

Yes.

What a shame.

I'm sad too.

I've grown very attached to Ms. Noh.

Anyway, thank you for your hard work.

I didn't do much.

You're the one who works hard

at home and at the restaurant.

I'll take some fruit to Ms. Noh.

We have antacids, right?

I feel a bit queasy and bloated.

You couldn't eat that much earlier.

I'll bring it to your room.

Anyway, it's one less worry.

I felt bad about asking her to leave

after begging her to stay earlier.

What a relief that she volunteered to leave.

You still shouldn't have looked so thrilled.

How callous is that?

Did it show?

Yes, it was very obvious.

I hear women like places like this.

How did you know?

Order whatever you want.

Do I have to pay after we eat as

a penalty?

It's my treat.

Then I'll order whatever I want.

Oh? I'll have this and this.

You should have this. It's good.

And this.

We'll have this, this, and this.

Thank you.

What's going on today?

What do you mean?

You brought me to a nice brunch cafe

and let me get whatever I wanted.

They say every TV drama has a twist.

Will you do a number on me

after being a little nice to me?

Is that how you see me?

Not exactly but...

Let's talk after we eat.

Yes, sir.

Suhyeok. Suhyeok. Look at this.

Why are you making such a fuss?

There's an article on Bora.

(Sharing is happiness)

She makes food for orphanages

and live-alone seniors every month.

That's very her.

Hey, drinker.

You knocked down quite a few.

What did I tell you?

I was quite wild back in the day.

You must've turned over a new leaf.

What about your niece's cooking class?

Was it a success?

No. I couldn't even go.

A client called me in.

The Dongdaemun mall project?

You must've been upset.

Very.

You're good are drawing.

I'm terrible at art and design.

Art was the peskiest subject back in school.

Why?

Oh...

How did you use crayons or paint?

I asked the kid next to me.

Hey, find green, find green. Like that.

You were smart.

You made the news.

Oh, you saw?

They said it would help them get more donors.

You looked much better in the picture.

I'll take that as a compliment.

A compliment? Are you stupid?

Moo Suhyeok.

I'm kidding, just kidding.

So when did you come up with such a kind idea?

It's not kind.

I cook, so the idea was to make lunches

I could share with others.

But once I started sharing,

I could see what I had

and what I was good at.

I came to learn that I was a good cook,

which boosted my confidence

and made me happy.

I'm thankful to them.

Okay.

Jin Bora, thank you.

W-What for?

What you said has reassured me.

I'm glad to know

I could be of help.

I heard your husband was a cop.

Is that why you were beating around the bush?

May I ask what happened?

Oh, right. I guess you might not know.

We never discussed personal matters.

It was an accident. A car accident.

It was a tragic accident involving a drunk driver.

Compensate him?

Do you think money can pay for a life?

What about the victim and his family's suffering?

That's why I get rather emotional

when I see a drunk driver.

Then this job must be very hard for you.

No. I'm happy I became a cop.

My daughter's very proud I'm a police officer.

My mom and my brother

are also very proud of me.

I also feel like a good person when I'm in uniform.

Besides, I look quite hot in uniform.

I'm sorry.

I was very careless.

It's fine.

If there's nothing else,

I'll get going.

Thank you very much for yesterday.

See you tomorrow.

See you.

What was I hoping for?

I should've known.

Who could it be?

Oh? Ms. Choi.

Ms. Choi Seunga,

are you going you keep ignoring our calls?

Pick up while we're still being nice.

Otherwise, we'll pay your kid sister a visit.

How dare they get my sister involved?

This is maddening.

Are you okay?

I was waiting for you to call.

I know this isn't easy.

But you must muster the courage.

He says he'll kill me.

Pardon?

You know him, right? You do, right?

He must pay for what he did.

No, I don't want that.

I know he must,

but I'd rather die than have my family know

what I went through.

Ms. Choi.

I loved him.

He treated me like vermin,

but I won't press charges against Dohyeon.

Excuse me?

Who did you say it was?

Did you say Mr. Jin Dohyeon?

All I want is an apology but...

What is it?

(Medical Report)

Man, this is insane!

What do we do?

She seems pretty determined.

She went to Officer Moo

and even got this medical report.

Darn it. Does that hussy want to die?

Hey, find out where that hussy is!

What will you do if you find her?

Apologize to Ms. Choi right now.

If you don't, I won't sit back.

So you're saying I'm a rapist, right?

Ms. Choi just told me everything.

Fine. Tell her to press charges.

And I'll press charges for false accusation.

Let's see who wins!

How could you do that

without giving me an answer first?

Chullae.

What's the matter with you?

Can't we go see that officer again?

Your partner's the best.

Uri's cute.

That woman is lying.

I'll simply do what I have to as a cop.

You want me to apologize

based on her words alone?

Did I save the life of a scumbag?

Why don't you talk to that woman in person?

You're saying I should settle?

She accused me of rape!

No Maggie. My skateboard is faster than your inline skates. No, it isn't. My inline skates

are faster. No Maggie. My skateboard is faster. My inline skates are faster. No, my skateboard

is faster than your inline skates. No, it isn't. Look. There is my skateboard and there

are your inline skates. Let's have a race. Ok.

Oh. Hey. Hello boys and girls. Hello. Me and Maggie are going to have a race. Yeah. I think,

my skateboard is faster than her inline skates. Let's race.

Haha. Okay Maggie. It's my fast skateboard against your slow inline skates. Hey. Ready?

Steady, go. Haha. Yeah. Faster, faster. Ha Faster. I'm faster than Maggie. Oh. Oh no.

Look. Look. There is a puddle. Hey. Fju. Oh no. I am getting slower and slower and slower.

Oh and look. There is Maggie. I am faster. Oh. She's faster than me.

Hey. What's that? Oh look. There's a bike. It's fast. So say it with me and be fast.

Are you ready? There's a bike. And again. There's a bike and again. There's a bike.

Aha. I'm faster than Steve. I'm faster than Steve. Haha.

Hey. Maggie. Move. Move. Oh. Look. I'm on a bike. Yeah. I'm faster than you. Oh no.

See you later. Look. I'm on a bike. Yeah. It's a really fast

bike. Maggie will never catch me now. No. Hahaha. Oh. Hey. What's that? Oh look. There's

What's faster than a car? Hmm. What's faster than a car? Aha.

Haha. My car is faster than Steve's bike. Yeah. Oh. What's that?

Hello Maggie. Haha. Look. I'm in a helicopter. No. My helicopter is faster than your car.

Haha. Oh no. See you later. Hey. Oh Steve. Look. I'm in helicopter. It's great. It's

really fast. So hey. Let's go faster and faster and faster and faster. Yeah. Faster and faster

These Students Spent The School Year Building Boats [Insights] - Duration: 2:20.

Whenever I go into the classroom and I ask kids "have you ever been on a boat?"

If they've been on any boat, the only boat they say is the Staten Island Ferry.

This day is the accumulation of all this hard work.

It takes a full school year - about 31 weeks - from the beginning when they just have plywood

to the end when they have a boat that they can sail on.

At first you couldn't see how it was gonna come out because it was like, little pieces

that you wouldn't really think you'd need on a boat.

As you went through it, you finally would realize, "wow, this is really coming together."

It's been extremely rewarding as a parent.

You know, you see that your child can really learn some life skills that they can take

on beyond the academic environment.

I never thought I would be doing this, because I wouldn't accomplish it.

In New York we don't really get to interact with like, outdoors a lot.

It's more like, it's a city so it's like inside all the time, working and then

the fact that I was able to do something like this was just great.

Kids walk away with actual hands-on tool skills.

They walk away with an understanding of engineering and physics.

Going out today I was kind of like, "oh no, what if the boat sinks?"

and just getting a little anxious, but the minute I got on the boat, and we were out

on the water, and then just talking with the guide, it was really cool.

To see Danielle get in the boat today, it just felt really good as a parent to see all

the hard work that you've put in.

Then she was also sailing away, which reminded me that, you know, eventually she's going

to go away.

The life of Latvia's first female president - Duration: 7:13.

he independence of Latvia has long been fought over.

During the Second World War, in 1940, Latvia was first occupied by the Soviets.

In 1941, the country was invaded again and then occupied by soldiers from Nazi Germany.

At that time, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, Latvia's first female president, was just four years old.

In her short life, she'd known little but war.

We saw planes flying low and tanks blowing up at the distance.

In 1944, three years into the Nazi occupation, Soviet troops returned to occupy Latvia once again.

I do remember that stream of refugees, there were Russians, there were Ukrainians, there

were Belarusians.

They were fleeing from Stalin's regime.

Well, we left Latvia three days before the Red Army marched in on October 10, 1944.

It was a very difficult decision because we had no idea what was going on in the world.

My Dad had been trying to listen to BBC broadcasts – in fact his life was in danger if he was

caught doing that – trying to get a sense of what was happening worldwide because of

course on the radio here it was all German propaganda.

Under Soviet rule in the Baltic States, whole families, women, children and old people,

were deported to camps in Siberia.

To Siberia or beyond.

I know several people who travelled for a month and were taken to the far north and

the far east of the Soviet Union.

Men particularly were taken beyond the Polish circle, where they did not survive for long.

They were taken to either gold mines or salt mines or coal mines, again mostly in the very

far north and given starvation rations, but anybody who had been linked to government

or anybody who had been an army officer and who had been arrested, they all got shot in 1942.

Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga's family fled to refugee camps in Germany.

In 1949, various countries offered to take in immigrants from the camps.

Canada sounded attractive but Canada did not take families with small children, Canada

only wanted strong single men for either the lumber industry in the north, for mines or

for weeding wheat fields in Saskatchewan, and women who would be able to work as

housekeepers or maids.

It changed later but at that time in '49, we wanted to go to Canada.

We wound up in Morocco instead.

After five years in Morocco, the move to Canada was made.

It was Canada where Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga spent the majority of her working life as

a professor of psychology at the University of Montreal.

Two months after her retirement in 1998, she took a phone call that would change her life.

Somebody says, 'Hello, is this Dr Freiberga?

– Yes – This is the Prime Minister of Latvia calling – Oh, how do you do?

– We have just had a cabinet meeting in which we have decided to found a Latvian institute

and we need a person with the knowledge of Western mentality.

At that time, Latvia was experiencing a newfound independence following the break-up of the

Soviet Union in 1991.

Elected in June 1999, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga served two terms as president and was instrumental

in achieving Latvia's membership to NATO and the European Union.

Following Russia's annexation of Crimea and its involvement in Ukraine, she is not

alone in believing the sovereignty of the Baltic States is under threat again.

To bolster the defence of the region, NATO has deployed four multinational battlegroups

to the Baltics and Poland.

In Latvia, the group is led by Canada.

For me personally, it was a big thrill that it was Canada of all the other possibilities

who was taking the responsibility.

It underlines that NATO is a transatlantic alliance.

I love that aspect of it.

We are not arming for a war, we are hoping there will never be a war and it won't be

necessary, but it is sending a signal because we have seen the invasion of sovereign countries

by the armed troops already in Georgia and in Ukraine.

There are two precedents, not just one, and we would not like this trend to continue.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin claims the deployment of troops is a provocation

while NATO says its exercising collective defence and deterrence.

The NATO battlegroups total roughly 4,000 personnel.

Does anybody in Russia seriously feel threatened and encircled by armies of the size of that

of Estonia with its 1.5 million inhabitants and Latvia with barely 2 million at the moment

in country.

I mean, does it make any kind of sense to pull out that sort of rhetoric when you on

the other side have your best paratroopers, the latest equipment and hundreds of thousands

of troops massed.

Who is encircling whom?

I'd like to know.

In Latvia's capital, Riga, reminders of the Soviet occupation can be seen.

There's even a Museum of Occupation, which is situated in a former KGB building.

This building was the centre for the secret police at the time of the first occupation

in 1940.

It was called the House on a Corner, and so many people who were simply taken, people

were sometimes picked off the street and just brought here, you didn't always get a notice

saying you are asked to present yourself at this building.

More often than not either they were woken up in the middle of the night or picked off

the street and brought here, tortured in the basements and also there's a place for executions.

Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga is still working in international politics but now has more time

to spend with her family.

In Canada, she brought up two children.

She taught them Latvian and would always remind them of their roots, especially her son Kārlis.

He says, 'I told my friends at school that my name is Bob', because his second name

is Robert.

He says, 'I am Bob, not Kārlis, but Bob' and one day he hears his mother answer the

telephone and say, 'Whom would you like to speak to – Bob?

– there's no Bob here' and then he had to decide and he decided he would say Kārlis

after all.
