The Land of Salt and Fire

Dallol, Ethiopia

It is so hot here,

the hottest place on earth.

I come here to push my imagination.

To see something new.

To understand how this place

is possible, I'll take you to the white.

To the salt.

I'm Andrea Frazzetta, there on the back

of the car, with the camera.

I'm a photographer.

And we are driving across the bottom

of an ancient ocean,

now a thick bed of salt.

It is so hot you can imagine how

10,000 years ago the sun evaporated

the ocean, leaving behind the

vast plain of salt.

Salt that the Afar people

have been mining for centuries.

They shape the salt into those blocks

at your feet to sell at market.

The blocks were once so valuable

they were used as money.

The miners are working now, but the week

before, they had gone on strike

to protest the falling price of salt.

I met a man named Kedir

who cut salt for 46 years.

"The salt is right here on our doorstep.

Our fathers mined salt to raise us

and we do it to raise our children.

In the hot season, we hire help."

"I think, in the future, the government

will give the work to outside companies,

and that the traditional way we mine salt

with camel caravans will end."

Roads are being built in this area

of Ethiopia, which brings access,

and new mining techniques. If it's easier

to move the salt, that means fewer

camel caravans each week.

Across the salt plain, there is another

industry growing. Tourism.

That's Ali. His father was a salt miner.

But Ali has chosen a different path.

"I work as a local guide to bring tourists

to Dallol."

"I have lived in Dallol all my life.

Every day brings new things.

New people, new colors.

It never stops changing."

Because just under our feet is one of the

most active tectonic zones in the world.

Magma heats the groundwater, pushing it up

through cracks in the crust of the earth.

The water mixes with minerals and the salt

to create these rock formations and colors.

Sulphur makes the yellow,

copper makes the green.

Iron brings the red.

This landscape, a geyser island sitting

in the middle of the vast salt plain,

is like no other place in the world.

It's a reminder that, just as the Afar

adapt to the forces that are changing

their traditional way of life, the earth

keeps shaping and shifting under our feet.

Compassionate Conservatism Is A Lie – Republicans Only Care About Money - Duration: 3:40.

During George W. Bush's very first presidential campaign in 2000, the phrase "compassionate

conservatism" was thrown around constantly, and it was a theme that permeated throughout

the entire Bush administration.

We heard them talk about compassionate conservatism.

Yes, we're going to make cuts to the budget, but we're still going to protect you.

Yes, we're going to roll back regulations, but it's because we care about you.

This is compassionate conservatism.

Well, I think after 17 years of the failed compassionate conservatism experiment, we

can go ahead and call it an absolute failure.

More accurately not just a failure, an absolute lie.

At the very heart of American conservatism is a deep-seeded hatred for American citizens.

Now, let me explain.

We have one party in the United States right now, or at least one more progressive wing

of a party, the Democratic Party, pushing to pay people $15 an hour as minimum wage,

pushing to have a universal healthcare program in the United States that covers everybody

under a single payer plan.

Contrast that with the conservative party, the Republicans.

They are trying to cut food stamp benefits by $193 billion over the next 10 years.

They want to cut Medicaid, health insurance for the poor, by $800 billion over the next

decade.

They want to increase military spending to enrich military contractors.

They want to cut taxes on the top 1%.

They want to repeal healthcare for 22 million people just to give another tax break to the

top 1%.

So I ask you, which party is more compassionate?

Which party do you believe is actually working in the best interest of the American public?

Because I've got to be honest with you, there's no way that you can stretch this argument

to prove in any way that Republicans are doing anything to benefit the people of the United

States.

Compassionate conservatism was an outright lie, and there is plenty of evidence to back

that up.

Everything these Republicans in power today do, whether it's at the federal level, the

state level, or the local level, is to either enrich themselves or enrich their donors.

They're not protecting us.

We know that because they've made agreements, rolled back regulations, to allow corporations

to continue to poison the environment, poison our aquifers, put 117 million people's drinking

water in jeopardy by repealing an EPA clean water rule this past week.

Is that compassionate conservatism?

No, because such a thing doesn't exist.

The Republican party may have began as something completely different, you know, 200 years

ago, but that's not what it is today.

It's a party by, for, and to the benefit of the top 1% of income earners in the United

States.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something.

Remember that time Kesha was painfully denied a hug from Jerry Seinfeld?

I gotta admit, since watching it over a month ago, I have not been able to shake the cringe

feelings away, but Kesha seems like she's ready to laugh at herself and move on.

In case you don't remember the disastrous moment, here is a refresher.

Poor Kesha walked away with no hug and no comment on the matter, but now that she has

her new single and video out for 'Praying' she's opening up on how that moment made her

feel.

While speaking to Sirius XM Hits 1 she said,

"I've seen every episode a thousand times.

I used to carry the whole season package with me everywhere on my carry-on.

Like DVDs.

That's why I was trying to attack him, yes!

That's why I wanted a hug so hard."

She also added that she should have known better, she's seen the hugging episode of

Seinfeld.

To be fair, Jerry had a valid excuse as to why he denied her.

Simply put he doesn't hug strangers.

"I'm 63, I don't know every pop star.

I have to meet someone, say hello.

I gotta start somewhere."

Good to know that both of them are laughing it off and moving on, but in my book, the

cringe will live on forever.

Here is your standing four-way hip with a resistive band. For standing hip

abduction with a resistive band, make sure the anchor is on the opposite side

of your body. Bring your foot out and keep your leg nice and straight, and then

kick away from you make sure you're controlling the band.

For standing hip adduction with a resistive band, you want the band to be

anchored away from you. You're going to bring your foot forward, try and lock out

your knee, and keep it straight the whole time, and then pull across your body nice

and controlled.

For standing hip flexion with a resistive band, you want to anchor the

band directly behind you, and then you're going to kick forward. Try and keep your

knee as straight as you can, lock out and pull up your toes a little bit to give

you some resistance.

For standing hip extension with a resistive band, make sure the anchor is

in front of you. Try and keep your legs locked out nice and straight, and gently

pull back and control it coming back.
