Wait, WHAT??
Santa Claus is not from North Pole?
From where? Turkey??
He's from Turkey??!!!
Hi, Welcome back to my channel, Rturkdemir :)
How are you?
Hope you're doing fine. 2018 almost came to end soon!
Malls in Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia should be decorated with Christmas and New Year decoration.
Anyway, since it's near to Christmas, it's kinda trending talking about Christmas these days.
I also wanted to follow the trend talking about Christmas.
Then, I thought so hard! What can I talk about Christmas while I am here at Turkey.
What kind of thing related to Christmas that I can talk about??
Anddddd… Finally I found one!!
You should know Santa Claus, right?
A big grandpa, with his white beard, wearing a red coat,
bringin a sack full of gifts that will be given to all the good kids.
There's also this song!
[Ria is singing :D]
Only good kids will get presents, bad kids wont.
[Santa Claus is from Turkey?]
Its said that Santa Claus is from the North Pole.
How about if I say……
Santa Claus is from Turkey??!!
Shocking??
Would you believe that?
Don't get me wrong right away. Don't be mad at me if I ruined your north pole imagination.
Next, I will explain why I said he is from Turkey.
Then I tried to find out more about the origin of Santa Claus.
So, what I read.. At some countries in Europe, there's Father Christmas character.
That Father Christmas always gives presents to kids when it's near to Christmas.
And somehow, this Father Christmas character was merged with Saint Nicholas.
You may heard that Santa Claus character came from Saint Nicholas character.
So, who is Saint Nicholas?
Saint Nicholas was a bishop from 4th century.
He was well known for helping lot of poor people.
He came from a city named Myra..
Where is Myra??
Myra has changed the name to Demre.
And… where is Demre?
YES! Demre is located at Antalya, Turkey!
If it was true that Santa Claus character coming from Saint Nicholas from Demre,
that meant he was not from North Pole, but from Turkey! HAHA
Hmm.. What I meant was…
If you think Santa Claus was originated from Saint Nicholas,
Saint Nicholas was originated from a city named Demre which is now belonged to Turkey.
When you say about Santa Claus character, I think its another different character from St. Nicholas.
Maybe Santa Claus is really living in North Pole!! :D
At that time, Myra (Demre) was part of Asia Minor (Anatolia) which is belonged to Turkish Republic now.
[Saint Nicholas Legend]
Saint Nicholas was born at a small village named Patara at 270.
Patara is also located at Antalya, still near to Demre.
It was said that Saint Nicholas was from a wealthy family
When his parents passed away, he got lot of inheritance.
However, he liked to give what he had to the poor.
There are many stories about Saint Nicholas.
But the most famous was his story with a man who had three daughter.
So here is the story…
This poor man want his first daughter to get marry, but didn't have enough money to pay for dowry (* sum of money paid to the bridegroom by the brides parents on the wedding day.)
Saint Nicholas secretly helped that man by dropping a bag of gold down the chimmey and into the house.
That bag accidently fell into a stocking that had been hung by the fire to dry!
This sounds similar to the story we saw in TV.
I guessed this could be one of the reasons hangging stocking on the fire became one of christmas decoration.
So we're hoping to get the present inside the stocking.
Back to that man's story…
Finally, that poor man could send his daughter to get married by the help from Saint Nicholas.
This was repeated later with the second daughter. He got help from Saint Nicholas again.
At the end, he was curious and determined to find the stranger who helped his family.
So he secretly hid by the fire to find out that stranger.
He succeeded caught that man and found out that man was Saint Nicholas.
Saint Nicholas begged him not to tell anyone about this.
Yet, somehow the news was spreading and when someone secretly got help, they always thought it should be from Saint Nicholas.
That was the story of Saint Nicholas with a man with 3 daughters.
It was only one of the story from lot of his legends.
You can check more story about him at refrence on the description below.
Saint Nicholas died at Dec 6, 343
After he passed away, a church was built to honor Saint Nicholas.
That church at Demre is still exist and opened for public now.
Have you been there, Ria?
Unfortunately, not yet.
I hope someday I could go there and share what I see there to you.
This Dec 6 is celebrated as Saint Nicholas day at some countries in Europe.
One of the country that still celebrated this Saint Nicholas is German.
Anddd.. I have a friend who lives there. She is also a beauty vlogger.
You can check her channel too to check out beauty contents.
Her name is Elita Loina. Her channel is Elitaloina21.
I asked her how people celebrate Saint Nicholas day there.
Because I don't have any idea what it would be..
According to her, Saint Nicholas Day is one of the big event in German, but it's not a public holiday.
She has a daughter, named Melody,.
Melody has entered kindergarten and her school is celebrating Saint Nicholas Day too.
How do they celebrate?
At the end of November, students were asked to bring stockings (socks) to school.
Then later, those stocking will be filled with candies and sweets by their teacher.
On Dec 6, Saint Nicholas will come to their school and give those stockings full of sweets back to them.
And also Elita said at the southern German, where she lives, is majority catholic.
The houses that have kids, will put stocking in front of their front door so people who passing by can put sweets inside.
Sounds so FUN, right?!!
That was first time I heard about this Saint Nicholas Day celebration. I have never experienced before, neither in Indonesia, nor in Turkey.
How about Turkey? Do we celebrate St. Nicholas Day in Turkey?
Of course not!
We don't celebrate at all..
Actually tomorrow is Dec 6… We don't do anything ^^;;
