In this Gimp Workshop we are going to create magical fantasy image number IX.
I hope you have fun with this tutorial.
We will start by making a new canvas on which we can work.
Click on file and then on new.
Make the width 5724,
and the height 3220 pixels.
Then click on advanced options.
At fill with, we choose foreground color which should be black by default.
Click okay. When a confirm image dialog box pops up, we just click okay.
The mentioned size is so high, because the displayed image is decompressed
and because GIMP keeps a copy of the image in memory for redo operations.
This 'size in memory' is also displayed in the image window,
but will not be our final image size.
Now we will open the image of the mushroom.
Go to file, click open as layers and open the image of the mushroom.
There is a link in the video description, to download
the images and also a PDF file of the spoken text from the tutorial.
Right click on the layer and hit add alpha channel.
This allows transparency in this layer.
We are going to remove the background.
Click on the paths tool in the toolbox.
In the top of your screen is a link to a short and simple tutorial
on how to use the paths tool.
We can zoom in and or out, by holding the Ctrl key and rolling the mouse wheel.
While we select, it is best to stay just a little bit
inside the boundaries of the subject that we want to keep.
Moving the image can be done,
by holding the space bar and then just moving the mouse.
For the sake of the tutorial we will go fast forward.
When the path is made and closed, we click view, zoom and fit image in window.
Now hit the button selection from path.
Then we click on a random tool in the toolbox to make the path invisible.
In this case we can click on the warp transform tool,
because that is the next tool we will use.
Click on select and then on feather.
We feather the selection with 7 pixels, and click okay.
Go to edit and click clear, so the background is removed.
Go to select and hit none, to deselect the selection.
Make sure you have the default tool options of the warp transform tool.
When you are in doubt, you can click this icon to reset them.
Now we make in the tool options of the warp transform tool, the size about 800.
Go to layer and click layer to image size.
Stretch the left and the right site of the three trunk like so.
This does not has to look perfect, because we will cover it with a vignette later on.
Press enter to confirm.
In the next step we bring in the image of the two boys.
Click file, open as layers and open the image of the children.
The image exceeds the maximum size for thumbnails, so we have to click here to create a preview.
This image already has a transparent background.
Go to layer, stack and click on lower layer.
Make, in the toolbox, the unified transform tool active.
In the top of your screen there is a link to a short tutorial
about the unified transform tool.
Click in the image, to bring up the framework with the handles.
As you can see, this automatically brings the layer to the foreground.
The layer in the layers panel is now invisible.
Hold the shift key and scale the layer down
by grabbing one of the square handles in the framework.
Holding the shift key constrains the aspect ratio while we scale.
By click and drag inside the framework, we can move the image.
We can also reduce the image opacity to about 50,
to see if we have positioned the image correctly.
We can leave the image opacity on 50.
When everything looks okay, we click transform.
The layer is now again behind the mushroom layer,
and in the layers panel it is visible again.
Back to file, open as layers and now we open the image of the forest.
Go to layer, stack and lower this layer also.
Zoom out a bit and click in the image,
to bring up the framework of the unified transform tool again.
Scale the image like shown in the video. No need to hold the shift key now.
Then hit the transform button.
We will blur the forest layer.
Go to filters, blur and gaussian blur.
Make the blur radius about 40,
and click okay.
Go to colors, and click on curves.
We make the forest darker, more or less like shown in the video.
When it looks good, we click okay.
Then click on the layer of the children and then in the image.
This should bring up the dialog box of the color curves again.
And here too we adjust the layer, but only a little bit, like so.
Click okay.
Make the mushroom layer active and click in the image.
Here too, adjust the layer to make it more dynamic.
Click okay.
Hit the new layer button at the bottom of the layers stack.
Name it vignette.
The fill with should be the foreground color, which is black.
Hit okay.
Make the opacity 95,
so we can see just a little bit of the underlying layers.
Right click on the layer and click on add layer mask.
Make sure that you have white full opacity checked.
And click add.
In the toolbox we click on the paintbrush.
Make the opacity about 30, choose brush hardness 025,
and make the size about 1500.
Then we paint back parts of the image, like so.
When we have removed to much black to our liking,
we can swap the foreground/background colors.
Now we have white as our foreground color,
and we can paint some areas black again.
Swap the foreground/background colors to their default.
We can click the vignette layer of and on to see the difference.
When we are satisfied with our result, we are going to add some light.
Click on the mushroom layer.
Make in the toolbox the dodge burn tool active.
Here too we work with brush hardness 025,
but we make the size about 200.
Make sure that the options dodge and midtones are checked.
Now we zoom in to the mushroom and we make the gills area lighter like so.
It is best to make strokes in the same direction as the gills of the mushroom,
but we must stay away from the cap.
When we have gone to far, we press Ctrl+Z to undo.
When this is to our liking, we make the size about 500,
and we make the top of the stem a bit lighter.
Then we hit the new layer button again.
Name this layer light, and make the fill with transparency.
Click okay.
Open the color palette by clicking on the foreground button,
of the foreground/background colors.
Fill in the HTML notation:
f e c 4 3 3.
Hit enter and then click okay.
Make the paintbrush active.
The opacity should still be 30 and the brush 025.
Change the size to about 1000.
Make some light spots, like so.
Then we change the layer mode to soft light.
Now we can still add some light if we want.
Clicking on the eye of the light layer turns it of and on.
Time now to bring in the spider web.
Click on the children layer, so the spider web layer comes above this one,
but below the mushroom layer.
Once more we go to file and open as layers.
Open the image of the spider web.
Change its mode to addition.
The pixel values of the upper and lower layers are added to each other.
The resulting image is usually lighter, but here the effect is okay.
Make the unified transform tool active, and click in the image.
Now we can transform the spider web as if it is hanging
between the mushroom and the tree trunk.
When we are satisfied with the result, we click transform.
Change the opacity to about 50 or to whatever looks good to you.
Now, for the last time we go to file,
open as layer and we open the spider image.
Click and drag the spider layer to above the mushroom layer.
Click in the image to bring up the framework of the unified transform tool.
Scale and reposition the spider as shown in the video.
Click transform.
Click on the children layer.
Change the foreground/background colors to their default,
by clicking on the little squares just below the icon.
We now have black again as the foreground color.
Activate the paintbrush.
Make the size of the paintbrush about 400,
and paint a bit shadow on the left side of the boy with the striped trousers.
Then we click the mushroom layer active,
and here we add some shadow on the top of the cap.
Make the spider layer active,
reduce the size of the brush to 50,
and add some shadow like so.
Press Ctrl+Shift+J to maximize the image in the window.
And there we have our magical fantasy image nr. IX.
I hope you enjoyed this workshop.
