This top is available as you see it here, with just the top or with the hard upper doors.
So, whether you have full steel doors or half doors, you can get a top that will work with
your Jeep.
Today, we're gonna talk through the installation of this top, which is a very simple one-out-of-three
wrench installation.
The top on your TJ is designed to come on and off pretty easily, and this one is no
different.
So you'll be able to get this installed in about an hour the first time, and a little
bit less the next time after that, but we'll talk more about the installation in just a
second.
This is for those of you that are looking for a factory-style, one piece hard top, that
already has a headliner built into it right out of the box, and are okay giving up a couple
of factory options.
From the factory, your hard top is going to have your rear defroster, your window, and
your washer, which this top will not have.
This is going to be a pretty well-built top that is going to look a little bit different
than a factory top.
If you want a factory top, you want all of that functionality but you can't find a top
for a reasonable price in your area, then going with something like this is going to
be a good back-up.
But, again, you are going to lose a couple of those factory features.
As it says in the name, this is going to be a 1-piece hard top, which is going to be very
similar to that factory top.
There are some other aftermarket tops on the market that are going to give you a 2-piece
design and have a targa front section that will come off more easily.
However, again, this is going to be a 1-piece factory-style top.
This is going to be made of a hand-laid honeycomb fiberglass material, so it's going to be light
but also strong.
This has a factory-style finish on the outside of it but is gonna be a little bit taller
in the middle, and the windows are a little bit bigger.
As I said before, this does come with a headliner right out of the box, which is a really nice
feature.
One of my least favorite parts about a factory hard top, whether it's a TJ, YJ, or a JK,
is the fact that the white plastic on the inside.
I really like having a carpet headliner on the inside of the Jeep.
I think it just gives it a much more finished look.
This is also going to have an adjustable latch on the front, and attached to the factory
windshield frame, so no additional hardware necessary there and you can get those latches
adjusted, so you're not going to have any noise from wind or any water leaking in through
that area.
This top does come out of the box with the glass in a separate box, so you go through
and attach that to the Jeep.
It's something you only have to do one time, and it is pretty easy to do.
And, that glass is just going to be tinted glass on the back.
You're not going to have a defroster, a wiper, or a washer, like a factory top would have.
As for the installation, this is definitely going to be a one-out-of-three wrench install
that shouldn't take you more than an hour that first time, because there's a little
bit of assembly to do.
And, every time you take this top on or off after that, you'll just be that much quicker
with it.
The first step in this install is going to be removing your top completely.
Whether you have a hard top or soft top, OEM or aftermarket, you'll have to completely
remove that top.
And, if you had a soft top installed on your Jeep, you're also going to want to remove
your door surrounds at this time.
From there, it's just a matter of having a friend help you lift the top into place on
top of the tub, make sure that it gets aligned, then use the included hardware to get it bolted
down to the tub.
After that, you can make the necessary adjustments on the adjustable latches up front to ensure
that everything sits nicely and fits properly.
And finally, attach the glass in the back using the six bolts and nuts that come in
the kit.
After that, you just have to snap the hydraulic rams into place, close the window, close your
tailgate, and you're finished.
Like I said, that glass is gonna stay on from that point forward unless, of course, you
need to remove it for some reason.
So, the next time you put this top on or off, you're gonna have one less step and it's gonna
be that much quicker and easier.
This hard top comes in at right around $1,800 and, depending on your area and the availability
of a factory top, that's probably going to be more than an OEM top.
Although, buying a used TJ hard top at this point, it is gonna be a little bit difficult
to find one that's not chipped, modified, or damaged.
So, it really comes down to what you want on your Jeep.
If you want a new top, you're okay with an aftermarket top, not an OEM one, and you're
okay giving up a couple of features on that rear glass, this is gonna be a good option
and I don't think it's a bad price for the quality you're getting.
So, if you're looking for a hard top for your TJ, you're unable to find a factory one for
the right price or in the right condition, or maybe you just like the fact that this
is an aftermarket top, has a slightly different look than a factory top, and you're okay giving
up a couple of features, this is gonna be a pretty well-built option, and this one fit
pretty well on our TJ.
So, that's my review of the Smittybilt 1-Piece Hard Top, fitting your 1997-2006 TJ, that
you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.
