In 1887, a scientist in Germany announced the discovery of a fossil animal that was

totally new to science.

The thing was clearly a turtle.

I mean, it had a shell, with a flat plastron on the bottom that was fused to a carapace

on top — so it had all the requirements for what makes an official turtle.

But this was not only a whole new genus and species of turtle, it was also the oldest

turtle that had ever been found at the time.

And this discovery ended up spawning a debate over turtles that would last for more than

a century.

Like, where did turtles come from?

What lineage gave rise to these weird reptiles with beaks for mouths and retractable necks?

And … how did the turtle get its shell?

Well, I don't want to spoil it for ya, but the answers would eventually cause scientists

to rethink the entire history of reptile evolution.

The German turtle that started all this was called Proganochelys, which means "early

shell," and it lived about 210 million years ago, in the late Triassic Period.

At about a meter long, it was pretty big — about half the length of the largest species alive

today.

But unlike modern turtles, Proganochelys hadn't yet developed the ability to retract its head

under its shell.

The fact that its shell was found intact was really helpful, because that made it easy

to identify this animal as a true turtle.

But at the same time, it left a lot of open questions about how that shell evolved, and

why it resembled modern turtles in some ways, but not in others.

So the discovery of this creature kicked off a debate about which major taxonomic group,

or clade, of reptiles that turtles belonged to.

Now, most reptiles fall under the clade known as eureptilia, or "true reptiles."

This includes stuff like lizards, snakes, dinosaurs, and birds.

But there's also, parareptilia, or "side reptiles."

These are some of the earliest reptiles, all of which are now extinct — like the spiky-cheeked

procolophonids and the mesosaurs, which were probably the first aquatic reptiles.

Now, by and large, which clade you put turtles in, depends on where you think its shell came

from.

Starting in the late 19th century, most paleontologists thought that turtles belonged in the clade

we now call parareptilia, because they shared the same basic skull structure with other

parareptiles.

And by the late 1940s, this theory became even more specific, suggesting that turtles

were related to a particular group of extinct parareptiles called pareiasaurs.

These are sometimes called the "ugliest reptiles," but we don't judge here

Bradysaurus, for example, lived around 260 million years ago, in the Permian Period,

and it was covered in a layer of hardened scutes.

Likewise, a later pareiasaur called Anthodon had more developed bony plates that formed

a layer of armor a lot like a turtle's shell.

So it's not too hard to see why a lot of paleontologists thought that pareiasaurs were

closely related to turtles — and were maybe even their direct ancestors.

The idea was that over time, the scutes found in pareiasaurs could have fused into a solid

protective layer, eventually combining with the ribs to form a shell.

But, you know how scientists are!

No one likes a good, rigorous, centuries-long argument more than they do!

Enter the developmental biologists -- they study how living things grow throughout the

course of their lives.

Starting in the late 1920s, some of these biologists studied the embryonic growth of

modern turtles.

They found that, as turtles develop, bones that basically function as a set of lower

ribs widen and fuse, forming the plastron.

Then another set of bones up top, which are the "normal" ribs, do the same, widening

and fusing to form the carapace.

So these scientists proposed that turtle evolution took a similar path, with widened ribs forming

first, and the shell later.

By the 1990s, the idea had really taken off.

Keep in mind, this was basically the opposite of what the paleontologists were proposing

— that the shell on top evolved from scutes that fused together before combining with

the ribs below.

And if the developmental biologists were right, turtles wouldn't be parareptiles; they'd

be much more similar to eureptiles.

So, both sides had some evidence to support their cases.

But it was hard to resolve the debate without more, and older, fossils.

Then, in 2008, researchers found one in China.

It was shaped a lot like a turtle, but it only had the bottom part of the shell —

the plastron.

And it didn't have a carapace

It was a shell-less turtle!

They called it Odontochelys, and it dated to about 220 million years ago — around

10 million years before Proganochelys from Germany.

The fact that it had a plastron without a carapace was pretty strong evidence for the

developmental biologists' hypothesis, that the plastron evolved first.

But there was more.

Unlike all other known turtles, Odontochelys had … teeth.

Its name actually means "toothed turtle."

And those teeth looked nothing like pareiasaur teeth.

Pareiasaurs had teeth with lots of little cusps on them, like human molars.

But this turtle's teeth were more like pegs.

So it looked like this ancient turtle didn't belong in the parareptile group.

It was a eureptile.

Eventually, this would be supported by several other genetic studies done in the last few

decades, that compared the turtle genome with that of other reptiles, and placed turtles

in a subgroup of eureptilia.

But while all that was going on, more species got added to the turtle family tree.

In 2010, the discovery of Odontochelys led researchers to reexamine another ancient species,

called Eunotosaurus.

It lived about 260 million years ago in Africa -- long before Proganochelys, and the previously

found Odontochelys

The first fossil of this species was originally found back in 1892, but most experts at the

time didn't think it was a turtle ancestor, because it didn't have a shell.

But it did have wide, flat ribs.

And modern paleontologists noticed that it bore more than a passing resemblance to Odontochelys.

Finally, in 2015, researchers discovered yet another early turtle in Germany, which they

called Pappochelys, or "grandfather turtle."

It lived about 240 million years ago, and it had wide ribs, with a set of bones below

them that were partially fused — but not to the point that they formed a plastron.

So old grandpa turtle seemed to mark a kind of transitional stage between Eunotosaurus,

with its wider ribs, and Odontochelys, with its full plastron.

Together, these discoveries helped fill out the timeline of turtle evolution, and it became

clear that the first step in the evolution of turtle shells was the formation of wider

ribs.

But there was still the question of why.

Why did turtles acquire these weirdly wide ribs in the first place?

What purpose did they serve?

And why did they eventually develop into shells?

Well, in 2016, paleontologists again took a closer look at Eunotosaurus -- which is

now considered the oldest of the turtle ancestors -- and noticed something funny about it.

Most of us think of turtles as being adapted for life in the water, with webbed feet or

flippers.

But Eunotosaurus seemed to have a lot of adaptations for burrowing through dirt.

Its head was shaped basically like a shovel.

Its front legs were stronger than its rear legs, and it had giant claws that would have

been great for digging.

So, the evidence pointed to life as a burrower.

And this could help explain why it had those wide ribs ... and where turtle

shells came from.

Researchers proposed that wider ribs would've been useful as an anchor when Eunotosaurus

Eunotosaurus was digging with its front legs

Wider ribs provide a more stabilized trunk, which would have made it easier for the turtle

to keep its body in one place while it was digging.

Other burrowing animals, like anteaters, have similar adaptations.

Problem is, having wide ribs with such short legs makes it awfully hard to walk.

Or at least, walk quickly.

In fact, the reason that turtles are so famously slow is that their giant ribs make it hard

for them to swing their little legs forward.

So, ancestral turtles needed extra-wide ribs for digging, but that also slowed them down.

Now they needed more protection.

And that's when the ribs started to fuse into a plastron, which eventually became a

full, protective shell.

Over time, the evolutionary purpose of the turtle's shell changed, from digging to

protection, and turtles as we know them became a thing.

Of course, none of this is fully resolved.

In theory, it makes sense for wider ribs to have evolved for digging, but right now that's

just based on what we've seen in one species.

We still need a lot more evidence.

Turtles' exact place among the eureptiles isn't settled either.

A lot of researchers think they're more closely related to a clade that includes animals

like crocodiles and birds.

But others argue that they're closer to a different group that includes lizards and

snakes.

Hopefully it won't take another 130 years, for an answer to that debate.

But either way, we now know that, on the tree of life, the turtles' branch isn't turtles

all the way down.

It's stacked with a diverse array of reptilian characters, some of which have no shells,

others of which have partial shells, and others still who sport the full, beautiful shells

and famously slow gaits that we know today.

Dems Just Announced What They'll PERMANENTLY REMOVE If They Win In 2020 - Duration: 5:40.

Democrates Just Announced What They'll PERMANENTLY REMOVE If They Win In 2020.

Democrats have a sick plan of what they wish to eradicate forever if they get lucky and

win the 2020 election.

As of now, there is not one single candidate who could provide President Donald Trump with

the competition.

Everyone from Joe Biden to Oprah Winfrey looks like an embarrassing opponent.

However, as they should, the Democrats are preparing for the next Presidential election,

and they have plans to permanently remove one very important sector of law enforcement

if they win.

The Democratic politicians are facing scrutiny from leftist pundits and activists about it,

and they're about to go all in for 2020 and remove the Immigration and Customs Enforcement

(ICE) agency.

Numerous leftist pundits and activists have clamored the Democratic party and politicians

over ICE because they think ICE is doing too good of a job.

In their own words, they believe ICE is terrorizing neighborhoods, even though ICE's job is

to arrest illegal aliens, in particular – the violent illegal immigrants.

The question about ICE came up back in January when a former campaign spokesman who worked

for Hillary Clinton stated, that ICE should end because they were working as an unaccountable

deportation force."

That sparked quite a bit of commentary and people asked where this backlash was for ICE,

when former President Obama deported over 2 million illegals during his eight-year tenure.

Peter Hasson from the Daily Caller wrote more about the Democrats 2020 vision to end ICE:"Should

ICE exist?"

MSNBC host Chris Hayes asked Democratic California Sen. Kamala Harris on Thursday.

Harris's answer "certainly" ICE should exist sparked a backlash among some liberals.

Liberal writer Jack Mirkinson on Friday slammed Harris for her answer in an article titled,

"Not Good Enough, Kamala Harris."

"Any serious defender of undocumented people in this country would look at ICE, and know

that it is a cancer that needs to be excised from the U.S. Pretending that the most diseased

levers of state power can be molded into something better is a useless fantasy.

ICE must be abolished.

Anything less is not good enough," Mirkinson wrote on Splinter, a left-wing website.

"Kamala Harris is very likely running for president in 2020.

It should be a political problem for her that she is not willing to take her criticisms

of ICE to their logical conclusion and call for its abolition.

She should be asked, over and over again, why exactly she is willing to uphold the legitimacy

of such a racist, corrupt, and thuggish organization," Markinson concluded.

"Anyone else who decides to run—Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren,

Eric Garcetti, you name it—should be asked the same question."

Left-wing publication The Nation on Friday pushed out a similar piece, entitled "It's

Time to Abolish ICE."

"The idea of defunding ICE has gained traction among immigrant-rights groups horrified by

the speed at which, under President Donald Trump, the agency has ramped up an already

brutal deportation process," The Nation's Sean McElwee claimed.

Major donor-funded groups on the Left, including Indivisible Project, the Center for Popular

Democracy and Brand New Congress, now support abolishing the ICE, McElwee noted.

"ICE is terrorizing American communities right now," Angel Padilla, policy director

of the Indivisible Project, told The Nation.

"They're going into schools, entering hospitals, conducting massive raids, and separating

children from parents every day.

We are funding those activities, and we need to use all the leverage we have to stop it."

Padilla mentions that ICE is terrorizing American communities but casually forgot to mention

that illegal immigrants have been terrorizing Americans.

Kate Steinle and many other victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants should not

be tolerated.

If there weren't so many illegal immigrants breaking laws that include violent crimes,

then ICE would probably not be so active.

When children are raped, murdered, kidnapped, or have other crimes committed against them

by illegal aliens, then it's imperative that the United States has a sector of law

enforcement dedicated to removing the criminals from the country.

Many illegal immigrants do not break others laws, besides entering the country illegally,

and live a very low profile life.

However, those who enter the country illegally and accept welfare benefits, but do not work,

nor pay taxes, also hurt the American economy and essentially steal money from taxpayers

that could be spent improving roads, schools, or other community functions.

The article in the Daily Caller later quoted ICE Director, Tom Homan, who mentioned a very

important statistic about the illegal immigrants that ICE has arrested: "Acting ICE Director

Tom Homan said Thursday that Democrats are being misleading about the illegal immigrants

that his agency is deporting.

"Nine out of every 10 aliens we arrested [in the last fiscal year] did have a criminal

history," Homan told Fox News.

"They don't want to know the facts.

They want to keep playing this political game and put smoke and mirrors up about what ICE

is actually doing."

It's very sad that Democrats will allow violent illegal immigrants to remain in the

country and badger ICE for arresting them, then have the nerve to label ICE as the terrorists

of the neighborhoods.

What about Kate Steinle?

What about every child who was raped, murdered, or harmed by an illegal immigrant?

Why do the Democrats favor non-Americans over Americans.

What do you think about this?

Disgraced Kathy Griffin Returns With Another Beheading Photo – This Time It's Worse! - Duration: 5:01.

Disgraced Kathy Griffin Returns With Another Beheading Photo – This Time It's Worse!

It was months ago when the nation was graced with the disturbing and destructive image

of a washed-up comedian holding what looked like the bloody head of the President of the

United States.

That comedian was Kathy Griffin, and thankfully, the bloody head was a prop, meant to be a

visual representation of her disdain for the 45th President of the United States.

Griffin was immediately shamed and forced to remove the overly aggressive images.

It wasn't lost on anyone that her choice to do a photoshoot, holding a fake head that

looked like the President had distinct terrorist undertones.

She even mimicked the way they hold their "prizes" in the propaganda material used

by ISIS.

Griffin herself went from arrogant never-Trumper to astonished outsider to sobbing victim mode

in a record-breaking amount of time.

Within hours of the photos going live, she was on camera, apologizing profusely, while

almost subtidally talking down to her fans about the creative process and pushing boundaries.

While her apologies might have seemed genuine, she backed off that humility rather quickly

when she discovered just how badly her career was affected.

The Western Journal tells the story of how Griffin is not only back, but ready to do

to the VP, what she did to the POTUS:

"Poor Kathy Griffin.

Just last year, at the end of her comedy tour, she went on YouTube to tell America that she

was 'fully in the middle of a blacklist like I'm in the middle of a Hollywood blacklist.

It is real.

I'm not booked on any talk shows.'

And all because she had held up the effigial bloodied, disembodied head of the president

for a photoshoot.

I mean, who hasn't done that?

Except everybody.

I just want you guys to know, when I get home, I do not have one single day of paid work

in front of me,' Griffin, whose net worth is $20 million, complained to her fans.

'I know I took a picture that offended a lot of people, but this wall of crap has never

fallen on any woman in the history of America like it has on me.'

Move over, Rosa Parks.

America has a new distaff martyr we can all feel sorry for.

And you can tell she was really suffering, since she filmed the video inside a hotel

suite so opulent it probably would cost one week of your salary to even wipe your feet

on the mat outside the room.

Well, anyway, Griffin's stay on the blacklist of the notoriously conservative folks in Hollywood

was mercifully short for the self-described D-lister, as she now has a comedy tour planned

for the United States.

According to The Daily Wire, Griffin has had dates overseas — in countries where she

hasn't played the violent beheading of their presidents for laughs, which was a canny move

— but the new tour represents her first foray back into the milieu of American comedy

clubs.

And, as an encore to her Trump decapitation stunt, she joked that maybe she'll do Mike

Pence this time.

Griffin made the announcement on Bill Maher's HBO show, which shouldn't come as a surprise

to anyone familiar with Griffin or Maher; the comedienne thanked Maher for 'being

one of the first and only people to publicly support me and say what happened is bulls***,

publicly.'

'You took a very bad selfie,' Maher responded.

'I blame the photographer … it turned out to be very wacky.'

'Wacky' is an interesting word choice when you consider the fact that the Secret

Service had to get involved, but whatever.

Griffin continues to argue that she's a victim, hounded by international authorities

intent on getting even with her … somehow.

'I was detained at every single airport,' Griffin told Maher.

'They scan your passport.

They put me in a detention room.

… There were times when they took my devices.

When you're in that moment, you're at the mercy of the one or two people in that

room.'

Far from learning a lesson, she joked that she was going to behead Mike Pence for her

next photo shoot.

'Just kidding!

Ten months I waited to do that joke.

Ten months!'

Griffin said.

Yes, instead of rehabilitating her image, Griffin decided her career would be best served

plotting the exact time to make a joke about beheading Mike Pence.

Sadly, like many public figures caught in a scandal, she wasn't actually sorry about

what she did, she was just sorry that she received such a harsh backlash.

She doesn't want to fix what she did wrong, she just wants to get more traction for her

career.

Now that she's sunk as low as she can, not just with conservatives, but with the other

Hollywood liberals who don't want to be painted with the same crazy brush, she's

willing to do it again.

The one difference is that if she does it this time, she's going to go into it knowing

that she'll be crossing a line.

If she thinks the backlash was bad before, this one is likely to be epic.

What do you think about this?
