Trade war looms as U.S. steps up trade protectionist measures - Duration: 16:42.

And to tell us more about a looming global trade war and how it may affect the global

economy as well as the Korean economy...

Professor Shin Sang-hyup from Kyung Hee University joins us in the studio today.

It's great to be here.

1- So according to a Reuters report,...

President Trump is looking to impose tariffs on up to 60 billion U.S. dollars worth of

Chinese imports,... targeting IT and telecommunications sectors.

Are we indeed heading for a global trade war?

1a- But the head of the most influential U.S. business lobbying group warned Trump that

unilateral tariffs on Chinese goods could actually end up hurting American consumers

and growth.

2- Some are saying that such action could've come following the recent shock victory by

the Democrats in the Pennsylvania election,... making Trump push harder with his America

First policies to win the hearts of voters ahead of the midterm elections.

3- China has responded by saying that it resolutely opposes any kind of unilateral protectionist

trade measures, and that if the U.S. takes actions that harm China's interests,...

China will have to take measures to firmly protect its rights.

What measures could Beijing take?

4- Larry Kudlow, a Reagan administration adviser and free-market economist,... has been appointed

as Trump's economic adviser, replacing Gary Cohn,... who left his post with the administration

last week after the president signed an executive order imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum.

So who is he and what impact will he have on the U.S. protectionist measures?

5- China, meanwhile, is concerned about Trump having chosen hardliner CIA director Mike

Pompeo to succeed Rex Tillerson as America's top diplomat.

6- Turning to a brewing trade war between the European Union and the U.S.,... EU leader

Donald Tusk urged Trump this week NOT to undermine the two sides' longstanding ties by seeking

economic gains through punishing trade tariffs.

He said, "Make trade, not war."

So where do you see them going in regards to trade?

7- Now, Japan has criticized the U.S. for its protectionist measures

and the recent imposing of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

But then Japan has also decided to retain a range of anti-dumping duties on carbon steel

parts from

China and South Korea, with such measures staying in place for 5 years.

8- The South Korean government has been trying to pull out all

the stops to request an exemption from Trump's

new tariffs.

Amid such efforts... what are

the chances of us being exempt?

9- Right now Korea and the U.S. are renegotiating the KORUS FTA... but President Trump reportedly

hinted that he might withdraw American troops from South

Korea if Seoul doesn't concede more in trade negotiations.

What can we make of this?

10- So looking ahead... if a trade war lasts longer than expected amid increasing protectionist

measures coming out of the United States... what impact would that

have on the global economy?

Pyongyang's FM in Sweden, Seoul's FM in U.S. possibly to lay groundwork for U.S.-N. Korea talks - Duration: 2:18.

It's a whirlwind of diplomacy going on right now around the world to get ready for two

potentially historic summits with North Korea.

The North's foreign minister, Ri Yong-ho, is now in Sweden to meet with his counterpart

there... and discuss "issues of mutual concern."

And at the same time, Seoul's foreign minister is in Washington... to talk about preparations

for the summit between the North and the U.S.

It looks like South and North Korea are working to keep up the momentum for talks between

all sides.

Our Oh Jung-hee starts us off.

North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong-ho's two-day stay in Sweden... has led to much

speculation over whether Pyongyang is making arrangements for talks with the United States.

That... as Sweden -- which, unlike the U.S., has an embassy in North Korea -- has been

considered as Washington's channel of diplomacy with Pyongyang.

Sweden's foreign ministry has said...

Ri's visit will focus mainly on Sweden's consular responsibilities in North Korea... and Pyongyang's

state media reported...

Ri and his Swedish counterpart Margot Wallstrom will be exchanging views on bilateral relations

and issues of mutual concern.

While there's speculation that preparations for Washington-Pyongyang talks could be underway

in Stockholm,... the U.S. State Department has denied it,... adding it has not sent any

delegation to Sweden for contact with North Korea.

Meanwhile, South Korea's foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha is in the U.S., to lay the

groundwork for a string of summit talks between Seoul, Washington, and Pyongyang.

Her visit comes after U.S. President Donald Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson

from his post,... replacing him with former intelligence chief Mike Pompeo.

Kang met with U.S. lawmakers as well as the U.S. President's daughter, Ivanka Trump,...

to discuss the situation on the Korean peninsula.

"It was a very deep discussion.

They showed much interest in issues on the Korean peninsula."

While inter-Korean summit talks are scheduled for April... and Washington-Pyongyang talks

for May,... there are suggestions that the leaders of Seoul and Washington could meet

face-to-face... between the two events.

With a hectic schedule over the coming two months,...

Seoul and Pyongyang's top diplomats have lots of work ahead.

PyeongChang 2018 Winter Paralympics offer a wide range of services and facilities for... - Duration: 2:54.

South Korea right now is holding the biggest ever Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do

Province.

The local government there has upgraded facilities and introduced other services to make sure

the Paralympians and visitors with disabilities can get around and communicate conveniently.

Our Cha Sang-mi reports from Pyeongchang.

There's just a few more days until the end of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Paralympics.

But the venues are still crowded with visitors who are here to watch the Games or tour around

the Olympic Plaza.

And the organizers have made sure those places are accessible for visitors with disabilities.

"At the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Paralympics, there's a range of facilities and services

for athletes and visitors with disabilities.

The sign language translation service is one such service aimed at helping the participants."

This phone comes with a small screen that allows the receiver to see the caller.

Interpreters at this center provide a remote Korean sign language translation service for

any athletes or visitors who need it, so that they can ask for directions and find out the

games schedule or transport information.

The interpreters are on standby from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day to help interpret communication

between the visitors and help desk staff on-site.

Apart from the remote sign language translation services,... more than dozen interpreters

are actually working on-site, providing direct services to those in need of a hand.

"I currently provide sign language translation services here at PyeongChang Olympic Plaza

for those with hearing impairments.

I help them with directions to and from Paralympic Games venues."

Transportation is also visitor-friendly.

Ordinary Seoul buses have been remodeled to cater to visitors with wheelchairs, providing

them with enough space so they can safely travel around the venues.

"We have also arranged volunteer services for individual visitors with disabilities,

so that the volunteers can accompany them from the moment they get off the shuttle bus."

A wide range of facilities for the handicapped have also been expanded around the Paralympic

venues.

"Wheelchair users can use accessibility ramps to enter buildings like this souvenir shop."

Braille blocks and handicapped restrooms have also been added throughout the PyeongChang

area to help visitors.

"Just in time for the Paralympics, our shopping arcade prepared several facilities for both

the general public and for people with disabilities."

With more facilities and services added for the Paralympics, the mountainous counties

of Gangwon-do have become a friendly environment for anyone who wants to visit... even after

the Games.
