Laws in S'pore to Protect S'pore Workers' Safety - Duration: 5:36.
(Fire alarm rings)
Everyone knows that Singapore is a safe country in terms of crimes
Our laws are strict and they hit us where it hurts the most
Yup, Singapore is a fine city indeed
But, what about workplace safety?
Everyone deserves a safe workplace to work at
So that they can get promoted and support their family
Here are ten facts about the Workplace Safety and Health act in Singapore
Simplified for you
So you'll know when your boss is breaking the law
Workplace safety and health act is a set of rules
That helps keep you safe and well when you're working
When most people think "WSH"
They'll think somewhere like a construction site because it's very dangerous
Nope, it can be here
It can be a kitchen
It can be an office
Basically anywhere anyone is working in lah
Workplace safety and health act might sound very complicated
But simply put, it only has three main components
To identify risk hazards
Two, to encourage companies to take charge and responsibility
For the welfare and safety of their employees
And three
To punish companies who have poor WSH measures
In other words
To avoid, to educate and to punish
Everyone knows that we have an ageing workforce
This means, in 2040, we'll have lesser workers in the Singapore workforce
Which means, lesser productivity
Equals to, lesser GDP
In 2018, the percentage of elderly above 65 years old
Will be the same as the percentage of young Singaporeans below the age of 15 years old
Now, imagine if Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) isn't enforced
We're going to lose more workers
Of course lah, that's from an economics viewpoint
Here's why it's important to us...
The number of work-related deaths in Singapore in 2017 is 42
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Manpower reported that
The number of workplace fatalities in 2017 had dropped to 42
This is the lowest figure in over a decade
Yes, it's an improvement from 2016 but honestly
42 people died
That's just like saying Singapore has a Mean mileage of 400,000km before breakdown
But are you happy with breakdowns?
No, right?
The number of work deaths decreased in 2017
But interestingly enough...
The number of workplace injuries cases remain high
A structured and well-participated near-miss reporting regime
Would help to better identify dangerous work conditions
And early interventions can help bring down accident rate
That's like going to the cai png stall And you realise one of the veggies went bad already
Instead of telling the uncle, you keep quiet
And unfortunately, people eat the same thing
Well, they wouldn't die...hopefully
But, all these could have been avoided if they had reported it
What do you think happens to workers who are involved in work accidents?
What do you think was their first thought?
(crying)
(director ask me cry but I too happi liao)
(no choice, cough a bit)
What am I going to do?
Am I going to lose my job?
(you wan me cry how long)
(finally)
Hey, what are you doing?
Don't worry, we got Return to Work (RTW) program.
Really?
We won't fire you
Really? Yeah, don't worry.
SMEs are actually given grants to help workers return to their jobs
Now, this has to be better because not everyone works in an SME
It was brought up during the budget debate to extend the grant to MNCs
And if the worker requires a lot of rehab to get back on their feet
They can use the grant for that too
Think about it
If there's someone in the company responsible for Workplace Safety and Health
There will be lesser accidents
Because that individual will have a vested interest in keeping everybody safe
That's his job
Mr Yong, Labour MP, is asking to make it compulsory
To have one such officer in every company
Someone who has the right knowledge and skills to identify and minimise risk hazards
Remember our first point?
Yes, offices are also part of the WSH act
Looking at Singapore right now, an increasing number of workers are working in offices
Which comes with its own sets of hazards and health related problems
Office workers stand a higher chance of getting obesity and other health related problems
Because they're sitting down most of the time
There are many Health Promotion Board programs
Aimed at getting office workers to exercise around the CBD area
You can also choose to eat healthier at the canteen or outside
And check if your company offers free health screening
It's not limited to just health hazards for offices
Like it or not, WSH is something that everyone wants to be done
But don't want to be the one doing it
Even if you think it's not your problem
If you're the victim, it becomes your problem
Take a look around your office and see if your boss is messing around with the WSH act
Check out the WSH website
And the Labour Movement messages for more information
Remember
Safety is everybody's priority
(Boss) Ok lor, then you become our WSH officer, ok?
Huh, boss, don't want lah. I got a lot of things to do already. Pass it to Zhi Hao
- I don't care. - He got nothing to do one
Boss!
