President Moon Jae-in arrives in Vietnam for state visit - Duration: 1:50.
President Moon Jae-in has now arrived in Hanoi... as part of his seven-day trip to Vietnam and
the United Arab Emirates.
He will be staying in Vietnam for three days.... to discuss ways to improve economic and diplomatic
ties with Southeast Asian nations.
Our Cha Sang-mi has more.
President Moon Jae-in arrived at Vietnam's Noi Bai International Airport Thursday afternoon.
The first item on the President Moon's schedule is rather sporty, he is to meet Vietnam's
national football team, led by South Korean coach Park Hang-seo.
Park became a national hero in Vietnam in January after he successfully led the country's
Under-23 football squad to the final match of the Asian Football Confederation Under-23
Championship, an unprecedented achievement for a Southeast Asian country.
On Friday, President Moon is to sit down for talks with his Vietnamese counterpart President
Tran Dai Quang and other officials in Ho Chi Minh City.
He will press home the importance of bilateral relations and Vietnam's role in his 'New Southern
Policy.'
The new policy is aimed at increasing Korea's bilateral trade with ASEAN members to 200
billion U.S. dollars by 2020,... and Korea is aiming for half of that, one hundred billion
dollars, to be with Vietnam.
Currently, Vietnam is the world's third-largest importer of South Korean products.
President Moon said the bilateral trade volume between South Korea and Vietnam came to nearly
64 billion dollars in 2017.
After three days in Vietnam,...
President Moon will head to the United Arab Emirates, where he will hold summit talks
with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
President Moon be in the UAE for four days.
This seven-day tour marks the President's first state visit this year and his second
to a Southeast Asian nation after his state visit to Indonesia last November.
President Moon had pledged to visit all 10 ASEAN member nations during his term.

Court to decide on ex-president's arrest warrant by tonight at earliest - Duration: 2:13.
Former Korean president Lee Myung-bak is set to learn whether the court will be issuing
a warrant for his arrest on charges of corruption.
There was going to be a hearing this morning but it was called off after Lee said he wouldn't
be attending.
Instead, the final decision will be made based on documents provided by the former president's
legal team and the prosecution.
Let's turn to our Park Hee-jun, standing by at the Seoul Central District Court...
Hee-jun,... just walk us through what's happening...
Devin.
The court has been reviewing the documents from the case since this morning.
They decided to proceed without the hearing,... after Lee Myung-bak made it clear that he
wasn't going to show.
The judge in charge will instead make a final decision on the arrest warrant after examining
his interrogation records and evidence.
Usually an arrest warrant is finalized after further questioning in the courtroom.
But because the defendant is absent,... the court will go over the documents and evidence
submitted by the prosecutors and Lee Myung-bak's legal staff.
During the former president Park Geun-hye's hearing ahead of her arrest,... it took around
16 and a half hours.
Although Lee Myung-bak will be asked no questions in person today,... the prosecution's warrant
request by itself... is over 200 pages long.
And on top of that, they also turned in a separate statement, explaining why Lee should
be arrested along with all kinds of evidence,... which amounts to more than 150 volumes -- or
80-thousand pages.
So we really can't say when the session will end.
Okay, so we're looking, potentially, at many many hours.
But what's the over-under on when the decision will come out?
Right.
The decision on the arrest warrant could be finalized by as early as tonight or Friday
morning... so the former president will have to sit tight at his home in southern Seoul.
Normally, defendants await the results at the prosecutors' office or at the court.
But in this case, like I said, Lee Myung-bak is standing by at his home.
So if the court issues the warrant,... investigators will have to escort him to the detention center
from his residence.
And that will make him the fourth South Korean leader to face arrest for criminal charges.

BOK chief expects U.S. rate hike to have little impact on Korean economy - Duration: 2:38.
The U.S. Federal Reserve has raised its key policy rate to the highest level in a decade
thanks to a stronger American economy.
This is the Fed's first major decision taken under its new chairman, Jerome Powell.
And as our Kim Hye-sung reports, it looks like interest rates are going to rise faster
than previously expected.
On Wednesday, local time, in its first meeting under Chairman Jerome Powell, the U.S. Federal
Reserve raised rates by a quarter percentage to a target range of 1-and-a-half to 1-and-three-quarters
percent.
It was the sixth increase since December 2015, when the Fed started tightening monetary policy
for the first time since the financial crisis.
" The job market remains strong, the economy continues to expand, and the inflation appears
to be moving toward the FOMC's 2 percent longer-run goal."
The Fed also boosted its economic outlook, signaling it may favor a more aggressive pace
of rate hikes.
It expects faster economic growth in the U.S. this year at 2-point-7 percent, up from its
December forecast of 2-point-5 percent,... and it sees growth of 2-point-4 percent next
year.
Policymakers continued to project a total of three rate hikes this year, but they sped
up their plans for next year, calling for three more rate hikes instead of two.
Now U.S. rates are higher than South Korea's for the first time in more than ten years.
The Bank of Korea currently has its key rate at 1-point-5 percent.
At an emergency meeting Thursday morning, BOK governor Lee Ju-yeol said the central
bank is ready to act to stabilize financial markets if necessary.
But he added that the U.S. rate hike was widely expected and that it will have little impact
on the South Korean market, citing Korea's strong economic fundamentals and fiscal soundness.
"A short-term base rate difference between the U.S. and Korea will not trigger a sharp
capital outflow given our economic fundamentals.
But if the rate gap continues to grow, with the Fed expected to raise rates three times
this year, capital outflow could happen, so the BOK is likely to raise rates this year
one or two times."
At the confirmation hearing for his reappointment Wednesday, BOK Chief Lee Ju-yeol said he would
be cautious about the timing of any rate hikes, pointing to external risks like growing trade
protectionism and domestic issues like the growing income gap, household debt and subdued
inflationary pressure.
But if the Fed hikes rates again in June, the gap with South Korea could grow, so all
eyes are on the BOK's upcoming monetary policy meetings, which are scheduled April, May and
July.
