(Episode 88)

Please answer me,

President Hong Seokpyo.

I was worried this would happen.

I'm sorry, Ms. Gil.

Why did you do it?

Mr. Hong...

President Hong, I doubt you intended to deceive me.

I knew, Mr. Hong...

Call me what you used to.

I can't do that.

I knew, President Hong, about your situation

and how difficult it was.

It wasn't pity.

I know.

Don't tell me you had no choice.

You had countless chances to tell me.

I know that, too.

Then why?

I didn't have the courage.

No. I was more comfortable as Hong Seok with you.

I had no intention of deceiving you.

When the world I knew crumbled

because I discovered I was a foundling,

I could bear it thanks to Mr. Hong Seok.

When Ms. Kim collapsed, and things got tough,

it wasn't unbearably overwhelming

thanks to Mr. Hong Seok.

But now I learn that Mr. Hong Seok was fake.

I'm just me.

Nothing has changed.

So I should just accept it?

Don't make it sound so easy.

It's not, which is why I couldn't tell you.

You don't know why I'm angry.

Someone who was emotionally scarred and penniless,

but who was warm and considerate...

Someone who had issues with his late mother,

but who also offered me great advice...

Don't say only your name has changed,

and that you're actually better off financially.

The person I loved was Mr. Hong Seok.

You can't just leave like this.

The world I knew has crumbled again

because of you.

That's unforgivable.

Myeongjo.

I don't know what's happened,

but Eunjo is crying her eyes out.

I think it's because of the DNA test.

Myeongjo, if Haengja finds out,

I might really get kicked out.

Can't you come home and comfort your sister?

I don't know. She's hiding under the covers crying.

Okay. I'm counting on you.

Who knew I'd be tiptoeing around Eunjo as well?

Whoa!

You startled me.

Eunjo is crying?

I didn't say anything to her.

I swear.

She looked upset when she came home.

Why? Why won't you go check on her?

Time heals.

Just let her cry to her heart's content.

And you...

Make dinner for Eunjo.

Where are you going this late?

She doesn't even listen to me.

I'm reaping what I sowed.

You still want to help me, right?

Yes, Ms. Gu.

But how can I trust you, Ms. Jeong?

Pardon?

You are Ms. Jeong Inu's sister

and the daughter of troublemaker Mr. Jeong Geunseop.

Is there anything you want to say?

What does all that have to do with me?

It has a lot to do with you.

When something bad happens, isn't it family

that ultimately has your back?

How can I trust you when you are

part of a family that stirred up a lot of trouble?

I never agreed with my father's thinking,

or my sister's.

Irrespective of my father,

I believe in the success of the derma line,

which is why I want to invest.

I'll love my family in my own way.

What makes you believe in the derma line's success?

Test results on the first and second prototypes.

I still wonder why the project was halted.

Really?

I see where you stand.

Let's talk again after I think about it some more.

You can go now.

She's on the ball,

but can I trust her?

Hello.

Your hand is so...

I caught you.

What's going on between you two?

- We're dating. / - Nothing.

- Nothing... / - We're dating.

So you two are together.

Bogeum, please keep this to yourself

until I tell everyone. And...

Don't worry.

Your secret is safe with me.

Let go of his hand!

Mr. Hong, what are you doing here?

Are you worried about something?

You don't look well.

Are you okay?

Don't mind me.

Do you have a headache?

I can't touch your forehead.

Are you okay? Are you okay?

It's okay. It's okay.

Are you okay?

What is it? Are you not feeling well?

I'll help you.

Do you want to go to the hospital?

No, I'm okay.

I want to help you.

Thank you for the offer,

but I'm fine now.

I should get going.

What are you doing here?

Mind your own business.

Why Mr. Hong?

Why are you interested in Mr. Hong?

That's not right.

What's not right?

You're like this due to unfortunate circumstances,

but I know you can never stop loving Busik,

so why hit on someone else's boyfriend?

Don't act like you know everything about me.

I can meet with other men, too.

Is this to arouse jealousy?

You don't know anything.

Then tell me.

You turned the house inside out to find bonds,

and now you're pursuing someone you shouldn't.

Aren't you doing this to reunite with Busik?

Busik? I don't need him.

So you've fallen for Mr. Hong?

You dismissed him as a nobody.

Do you know who Hong Seok is?

I'm not interested.

You will be if I tell you who he is.

Oh. You have bit of a history with him, too.

What are you talking about?

Hong Seok is Hong Seokpyo.

The former CEO of Genius,

whom you once tried to seduce.

Hong Seok is Hong Seokpyo?

Go sit in the corner over there.

You're distracting me.

This isn't the time for cookbooks, Mr. Gu.

I need to host a big dinner this weekend.

So it is time for cookbooks.

President Hong isn't answering his phone.

He planned to reveal himself today.

He's probably doing well, right?

Reveal himself?

Wow. So he'll return to being Hong Seokpyo?

Yes.

I hope Ms. Gil doesn't give him too hard a time.

Come on. She won't just let him off the hook.

She'll play hard to get for a bit.

"Why did you lie to me?"

"Did you have such little respect for me?"

Huh? Who's this?

Yes, hello?

Yes, this is. Who's calling?

Oh. Ms. Gil's brother Myeongjo?

Yes.

Oh, really?

So President...

So Seok isn't with Ms. Gil right now?

He's looking for Seokpyo?

Well, where could he have gone...

Oh. The Center's storage room.

He goes there when he needs to think...

Hello? Hello?

He's so impatient.

Hang on.

Is the situation more serious than we thought?

Ms. Gil is at home,

while her brother is looking for President Hong.

Wait. I shouldn't be sitting here like this.

Where are you going?

To look for President Hong.

He's not a little kid. Leave him alone.

We're too overprotective of him.

Don't you think he should be on his own now?

So you really were here.

I didn't get my hopes up.

I thought you'd be comforting Eunjo tonight,

so what is this?

Comforting her?

Eunjo didn't tell you?

She must have been really rattled.

What will we do?

What are you talking about?

She got her DNA tested with Ms. Kim's.

And? Is it a match?

Is she Ms. Kim's daughter?

No, she isn't.

No?

Eunjo must've been hoping she was.

She says it's fine, since nothing has changed,

but she seems very disappointed.

What about the kidney transplant?

That wasn't a match, either.

I heard she's crying in her room right now.

Please comfort her.

I figured you'd be better than me.

Thank you for telling me.

Eunjo is being strong

despite such shocking news,

so she really is remarkable.

I know it's all thanks to you.

Thank you.

So Eunjo hasn't said anything.

No.

No wonder she looked down.

I'm done taking care of an urgent matter.

I'll pay more attention to Eunjo from now on.

Oh? What brings you here so late?

It looks like you had a few drinks.

So you were here, too, Ms. Kim.

I drank because I was upset,

but I don't want my kids to see me tipsy.

I'll leave once I sober up.

Hang on. I'll bring you honey tea.

What are you so upset about,

to go out drinking alone?

I went to see that jerk today.

Here.

This will sober you up.

Thanks.

Ms. Kim, you must shudder when you think of him,

but it's even worse for me.

But I forced myself to go see him,

since he's the father of my children.

My ties with him will follow me to my grave.

You must be sick and tired of those ties.

You don't say.

I met him when I was 20,

and it was great for just 3 years,

during which time we had Inu and Injeong.

Since he was highly educated,

everything he said and did

seemed refined.

Isn't it funny?

Not at all. They're your memories.

Memories, my foot.

But after 3 years,

his carefree spirit turned to incompetence,

and all that knowledge in his head

only fed his useless vanity and greed.

But what can I do?

As despicable as he is, he's our kids' father.

Why did you go see him today?

To get him to talk some sense into Inu.

I said if he did, I would plead with you

to submit a petition on his behalf.

No can do.

That scumbag will never learn.

Petition?

When is the trial?

The day after tomorrow or something.

I'll just block him out of my head

and take care of my girls in my own way.

So you just ignore him, too.

I mean it.

I heard you didn't even have dinner.

Here. Fish-shaped buns.

You got these because you wanted them, right?

You caught me.

I don't know why I love these so much.

I never get tired of them.

Here. Have one.

Did you cry to your heart's content?

Can I ask why you cried?

I found out who Mr. Hong really was.

Good grief. What took him so long?

I found out before he told me.

So you knew, too.

So you two had an argument?

Does it bother you so much that he's Genius' CEO?

I thought he was pathetic at first.

He was bigger than me,

but he had to hide behind me,

tugging at my jacket to go into the market.

Yet he was so proud for someone so weak.

He reminded me of Dad.

But then I found myself

worrying about him and missing him

when I didn't see him.

I'm not angry that he lied.

I completely understand why

he couldn't tell me who he was.

Then you're all set, so what's the problem?

It feels like I've lost something very important.

Why is that?

It feels like I can no longer help him.

It feels like he's up high and far away,

where I can't reach him.

That makes me feel worthless.

Why are you so hard on yourself?

Don't be like that.

But even now, I worry about him.

Maybe I've made his condition worse.

Maybe he's gone away somewhere in distress.

Eunjo really is in love.

Ms. Gil, I'll wait here

until you feel better.

Changsu.

I'm sure you've been resenting me.

I don't blame you. My middle-aged fling was a mess.

Changsu, my short-lived marriage

left behind nothing but scars,

and my heart is tattered like a rag.

But as always, when there is loss,

there is also gain.

Now I'll provide the kids with stability

and embrace those who have strayed.

And Eunjo

and Seokpyo, with whom I have special ties,

are very much in love right now.

I hope things go well for them.

Changsu, I think it's time

for me to tell the kids about my life.

Wow. They're so nice and pretty.

Right, Changsu?

Welcome. Welcome.

Come sit down.

What is it? Is something bothering you?

Um, no.

Okay.

I asked you both here at the same time

to give you the same chance.

Is that even possible?

We are a large firm.

An investor targets the better product, Mr. Byeon.

Whose product would be better?

A one-person operation's or a large company's?

I'm the majority shareholder of that company.

Have you forgotten?

Now, now, now.

Enough with the power plays.

This one from the current Genius CEO is great,

and your revised proposal isn't bad, either.

So I want to help with the launch.

How about it?

Both of us?

Would that be possible?

It would cost a lot.

As I always say, I'm in the money business.

I never do anything that'll net me a loss.

So start with a pre-order of 500 units each.

I'll choose where to invest depending on the result.

But once I decide to invest,

it'll be a far greater sum than you're expecting.

How about it?

You can decide, President Hong,

but Busik, you'll need President Kim's approval.

That's correct.

Okay. We'll talk once the decision's been made.

Very well then.

Okay.

Kim's proposal puts profit first,

while Hong's plan puts consumers first.

The result will be interesting.

Mr. Hong Seokpyo,

you don't think you stand a chance, do you?

Why do you think that?

I feel bad, as this feels like

an adult twisting a little kid's wrist.

How will you pay for a 500-unit pre-order?

Leave that up to me.

The derma project has many pitfalls.

I hope you avoid them and get the product completed.

But the game is already over.

Let's see who wins.

If you do well, I'll compensate you in shares.

You'll no longer be a mere employee,

but a Genius shareholder.

Needless to say, it's your call.

Why is it so empty in here?

Is no one here?

Hello.

Mr. Gu and Ms. Dong went out to the green.

Unbelievable.

They didn't even tell me about it?

I practiced so I could go with them,

so how can they do this to me?

The Center rooftop.

Go check it out.

Why the rooftop?

You'll see.

Hello.

You seem to be in a good mood.

Why shouldn't I be?

Where's my mother?

I'm looking for her, too.

Come with me.

That's right.

Hi.

Welcome to Gu Chungseo's green.

This is the green?

Of course. What more do you need?

I thought you'd gone to play golf.

I was disappointed at first, too,

but this is quite fun.

It's perfect for my skill level,

and it's good exercise.

You're getting brainwashed by my brother.

Congratulations.

Busik, you exercise, too, whenever you can.

It's great, and it helps you eat better.

Okay.

- Let's play. / - Okay. Here it comes.

I won! I won!

Aren't I good, Busik?

I won. I won.

Isn't it high time we step in?

Step in?

Chungseo will invite you to our house this weekend.

Chungseo wants to turn it into

a family dinner and engagement party,

but I have a different idea.

What is it?

Let's turn it into a wedding.

Why drag things out?

A wedding?

They're dallying because of their kids,

but why have them play silly sports and waste time?

How about it?

Is something nagging at you?

Is it Seokpyo?

You won't be a mean sister-in-law to my mom, right?

Sister-in-law...

You're barking up the wrong tree.

Pardon?

Your mom hasn't told you?

I'm Mr. Gu Chungseo's daughter, not his sister.

Pardon? His daughter?

No need to look so confused.

He fathered me when he was in high school,

so I grew up thinking he was my brother.

But shouldn't he be my father one day?

You're really his daughter?

I didn't know who my mother was,

while you didn't know your father's love.

It wouldn't be bad for the 4 of us to be family.

Your mother seems more caring than she looks.

If it's about work, don't worry.

I reached out to you,

but you refused.

I accept that.

Okay then.

Okay. I'll plan the wedding then.

Oh. Since we'll be family now,

let me give you a piece of advice.

Don't trust President Kim too much.

He swallows the sweet and spits out the bitter.

He's like a snake.

If he swallows you, as you're sweet,

you'll end up in his stomach.

If he spits you out, as you're useless,

he'll treat you like garbage.

Don't worry.

I can take care of myself.

I hope you never lose that confidence.

Your Honor, I am Kim Haengja,

notorious as the gamecock of Geumdong Market.

Despite being an old hand in the market,

I'm the victim of a sham marriage

perpetrated by Jeong Geunseop, who is awaiting trial.

Wow. It looks very nice on you.

I still don't want to believe that he set out

to con me from the start.

I believe he got greedy

as our relationship progressed.

I still shudder

when I think of what he's done,

but I want to emotionally move on now.

He could reflect on his misdeeds behind bars,

but if you put him in my charge,

I'd like to try to teach him to have a conscience.

The reason is that he has two children

and is trying to be a good father.

I ask for your leniency

for those two children's sake,

and so he has a chance to see the error of his ways.

And please put him in my charge.

Dad.

While defendant Jeong Geunseop

did commit a serious crime,

this was his first offense,

and the victim submitted a heartfelt petition,

and so I rule as follows.

Verdict.

Defendant Jeong Geunseop

is sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in jail.

But the sentence will be suspended for 4 years,

and I am ordering 200 hours of community service.

What?

You must do as Ms. Kim says

to fulfill the 200 hours of community service.

How in the world is that allowed?

The law allows it right here.

Geez. I should've gotten a public defendant.

You represented me to get me in this mess, right?

You got out thanks to Ms. Kim's mercy.

You got probation

only because Ms. Kim petitioned.

So you expect me to kowtow to her?

That's the least you can do.

You must do whatever she says

for 200 hours.

No way.

I'm not Ms. Kim's slave.

Yes, you are.

This time, she bought you not with money,

but with the law.

So do a good job.

If you refuse, you'll go to jail.

She'll give me such a hard time.

Isn't there any other way?

Please look into it.

There's no other way.

Where is Ms. Kim right now? Huh?

Where is she?

Ms. Kim.

Ms. Kim, it's been a long time.

So it has been.

You petitioned on my behalf, right?

I'm so grateful, I could cry.

Just tell me what to do.

I'll do my best to make amends.

Do you mean that?

Um, of course.

I've done a lot of thinking.

So give me the benefit of the doubt.

Where should I start?

I'll do whatever you say.

Don't worry.

Just don't forget that you must

fill all 200 hours.

Of course. Of course.

Please take good care of my mom.

I hope this marriage goes well for her.

Ow.

Do you feel tightness again?

Doesn't it look like Inu is seducing him?

Who is he, that she's pursuing him?

So it was you

who collapsed in the club?

Yes.

How uncanny.

Nothing lasts forever.

Right?

The only thing that's completely mine is myself.

So that's what you agonized about.

That's why you looked so sad.

Mom Invents a Way to Breastfeed Hands-Free - Duration: 7:17.

I felt overwhelmed. I mean if you can imagine someone dumping a pile of bricks on you

and the bricks were up to here… I felt like I cannot do this anymore.

It's impossible to breastfeed and potty-train and take care of 14 boys

besides my four that's four and under without having my hands.

We were, my husband and I were house parents at a boarding school, and we had our four

children within a four year span. 18 different personalities. 18 different

schedules. Even if you have organization, even if you have help, everything in life

does not go as planned.

My mother has been my my backbone,

I call her my right hand. She actually prayed for the birth order of my children.

I planned the first. I planned the second — didn't know it'd be twins

well, my mom knew—but I hadn't planned the fourth. I was like, not this soon.

So I was breastfeeding the baby, and the twins were potty training and needed to go potty

right away. And the baby would not let go. And I had to scoop up one twin, run her

to the potty, get her little pants down, sit on the potty, go back and scoop up

the other twin, get her to the potty, and literally when I got them situated

I realized there was a vision before me, as if someone holds up a picture in front

of you and takes it away. What I saw was me with a carrier that

held the baby in the cradle position for breastfeeding, it had a cover that came up,

and my hands were like this. That's all I saw was me like this, with this carrier on.

And my aunt said you know, I think God gave that to you for you to create.

It took years. It took me from again January of 08 when I put pen to paper to

January of 16 before I had something that was sellable.

And if I can equate it to childbirth, that's probably the best way I can describe it.

It takes pain to birth something beautiful into the earth realm.

This is the very first, very first prototype. This is the start.

You know, I had to start somewhere. What works, what doesn't work, where am I really

going with this… Now this iteration was a different seamstress, and we still have

the pins in here from originally. Oh my gosh. This other version we came up with

which is even bigger…

Now you see we were getting to the idea that you can bring baby up.

Baby's legs would come through here, and so it's like a crotch dangler

We've got to make this work. Gotta make it work.

But again it's pretty long and

cumbersome and looks like a little daybed on mom.

Who's gonna buy this? This is frustrating.

We like the idea that you can carry on either hip so that had my

mind rolling on how to make this carrier more than one thing.

How do we get the baby from a reclined position to an upright sitting position.

Baby can sit here and their legs are not dangling through two holes

and you see the vest back became an actual vest.

Eight years is a really long time to keep pushing

but my mother always teased and said you've always been a bulldog, you know

you're like that dog that when you get your teeth clamped into something you're

you're not letting go until you see it manifest.

I was so frustrated all these seamstresses not getting exactly what I wanted.

I'm gonna try and use what I've learned and figure this thing out myself.

I cut out this design that I had in my mind and I literally taped it together

and said I think this is what I need.

Then, my mom, I was on the phone with her, she said

take that to one of your friends that has a baby. Have her try it on.

See if your dimensions are right.

The lady said I think that you're onto something. This is it.

And I said, oh my gosh, okay, this is it!

I thought I had seven separate carriers.

All seven carriers were going to be complete in one carrier

and would have seven carry positions.

God took me through all those little steps

to get me from the breast feeding sling position

to also having the upright sitting position carrier

and put them all together into one product, which made it a first.

Lower baby down into the carrier

and then I'm simply going to pull down to my D rings to bring baby

closer to breast for breast feeding.

This is the position I had in the vision when I first had the idea.

What I've found is that GoGoVie helps a lot of mothers in different ways.

I've had some mothers say, hey, I have limited mobility,

I can't raise my arm past a certain point, so I can't clip that in the back.

And I've had mothers who are in wheelchairs

who have, you know, said you know what?

I have a hard time sitting when I've got buckles in my back.

I hear that constantly. That's my trademark vest back.

There's no buckles that go behind your neck or behind your waist.

"Out?"

They don't have to keep investing in new carriers as their baby grows from

newborn up to 35 pounds. They can throw it in the wash like a pair of jeans.

Dads say hey, I love it for that reason. I like the black denim, I feel very confident

wearing my baby in this carrier.

I've got grandparents who love it. GoGoVie's vest back,

it evenly distributes the baby's weight.

Grandparents don't have to worry about having back pain.

I remember once hearing a message from a minister

and he said, you know, can you stand to be blessed?

When you're trying to build something, your character's tried,

your strength is tried, your faith is tried, your relationships are tried.

You have to build a good foundation so that when

that structure is erected above ground it can stand.

I never really gave up, even when I felt that way sometimes,

because as soon as I felt that way I would remember the vision.

The vision.

You saw this. You know what has to be done

because you saw it done.

You know, it's not there yet and businesses have steps and stages

which is important and it's not a bad thing.

Just like with your children, there's good days, there's hugs and kisses and cuddles.

There's also days where it's discipline, consequences, heartache.

And that's part of the blessing. Not just that they're grown,

but the process is part of the blessing.

"OK, we're done." "No! I got more doubles, uh-uh."

If a mom is trying to balance being an entrepreneur, I would tell you

at all costs to get you a good grounded base.

Refuel your spirit, refuel your mind, refuel your body.

Don't get lost in the shuffle. And for me that base is prayer.

I don't know what your base is, but you've got to find a base.

For me also it was important to have a mentor. To have someone that you can go to on a

personal or spiritual level, but also find somebody in business who can mentor you.

So someone that you know, someone that you like to spend time with, and

someone you trust.

"It's come along way." "Thank you." "Very good."

And what I really encourage is not to give up. Don't give up!

It's tempting to give up, when you're overwhelmed, it's tempting…

but don't give up. You have something special.

Trung Quốc Nắm Con Sông Quan Trọng Nhất Đông Nam Á trong Lòng Bàn Tay | Trung Quốc Không Kiểm Duyệt - Duration: 7:35.

On this episode of China Uncensored,

Southeast Asian nations are pretty upset

about all China's dam projects.

Hi, welcome back to China Uncensored.

I'm your host, Chris Chappell.

And boy have I got a good dam story for you.

Because we're going to talk about

one of China's megaprojects:

reshaping the entire geopolitical- environmental-economic landscape

of a large chuck of Southeast Asia.

Using a bunch of dams.

Plus strong-arm politics.

This is the Mekong River.

It's called the Lancang River in China.

It starts in Tibet,

and flows down through Myanmar,

Laos, Thailand, Cambodia,

and finally Vietnam,

where it empties out into the South China Sea.

Which means both ends of the river have been Chinese territory

since ancient times.

That last part is a joke.

Except...kind of not.

The Chinese Communist Party feels that

it has the strongest right to control the river.

Partly because China is the most upstream country,

which gives it the terrain advantage.

And partly because China

is bigger and stronger

than those other five little countries combined.

It could beat 'em up with

one river tied behind its back.

China has already built 7 hydropower dams

like this one along the upper Mekong River.

It has plans to build 21 more.

People living downstream are concerned,

because dams upstream mess up

the entire river's natural cycles.

And that affects the whole ecosystem.

The Mekong River is a huge economic resource

for the region.

It's home to one of the world's most diverse fisheries,

second only to Brazil's Amazon River.

Over 60 million people

in the lower Mekong River basin

rely on the river for food, water, and transportation.

And China's dams are causing some serious dam problems.

For example,

in the summer of 2016,

Southeast Asia faced the worst drought

in a hundred years.

It had the biggest impact in Vietnam,

where it directly affected

half a million households,

causing rather serious problems,

like "a lack of drinking water,

food shortages,

and forced internal migration to urban areas."

Is this because of China's dams upstream?

Well, if you ask Chinese state-run media,

the droughts were actually caused by

the climate cycle known as El Niño.

Which in English translates as "The Niño."

In other words, The Niño did it,

and it was totally not China's fault.

In fact, we should thank China.

Because after desperate requests from Vietnam,

China released a little bit of water

to alleviate that drought—

which, again, was definitely "due to the prolonged effects of El Niño."

But if you ask, say, any scientist—

they would tell you that Chinese dams

are at least partly to blame.

"When China began damming the Mekong

and its upstream tributaries in the early 1990s,

scientists predicted the kinds of droughts

we're seeing today."

Scientists predicted it,

the CCP ignored the data,

and went ahead with its dam projects anyway.

This kind of intentionally ignoring science

doesn't exactly bode well for the regime

that claims it wants to be a world leader

in tackling climate change.

But anyway,

even before China started building dams,

there was a need to collectively manage

issues related to the Mekong River,

since it's shared by so many countries.

They've come together in various forums

over the past 60 years.

And in 1995,

four of them established the Mekong River Commission.

The Mekong River Commission

has been helpful,

though not ideal.

Partly because China

refused to participate.

Hey, I totally understand.

These meetings do not look exciting.

Worst way to spend an afternoon ever!

Except maybe that time I watched Battlefield Earth.

But "boring meetings" is not

the reason China opted out.

It's actually because The Chinese regime

didn't like the rules,

and preferred to set up its own

Mekong River group with its own rules.

In November 2015,

China set up the awkwardly-titled

Lancang-Mekong Cooperation framework—

which sounds even more boring.

But it's actually about power.

It allows Beijing to sidestep

the Mekong River Commission's regulation

that dam proposals need to be discussed

by all the member nations

before they can be built.

Basically, the Chinese regime wanted to make sure

the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation framework

didn't require actual cooperation.

At least not between all the nations.

See, even though all six nations are members,

China emphasises "bilateral comprehensive strategic partnerships."

That is, one-on-one partnerships,

where China is one of the ones.

It's a classic CCP "divide and conquer" strategy.

"China has dealt with Mekong countries bilaterally

so that these countries are not able to unite and stand up to China

as a regional grouping."

As another expert puts it,

"If Beijing manages to achieve control of the Mekong's development

it would quickly become a crucial artery

for China's rise and exportation of influence."

This is not surprising.

Remember Xi Jinping's three and an half hour long speech

that cured insomnia at

the 19th Party Congress last October?

How he rambled on about how China

should have more international influence?

Well, in just the past two years,

China has set aside billions of dollars

to support 45 Mekong River projects

in these countries.

For example,

China is helping fund a series

of at least three dams in Laos.

The first one "directly ignored the recommendations

of the Strategic Environmental Assessment"

but Laos went ahead with it anyway.

Because now that Laos has

financial support from China,

it can now flat out ignore the concerns

from Cambodia and Vietnam.

But if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Because Cambodia is building its own dams.

Which, unfortunately,

come with their own dam problems.

They're also paid for with Chinese money.

So the Chinese regime has built

its own Southeast Asia cooperation group,

and it then works with each member country

one by one,

and promises each of them economic development.

Individually, each project is fairly limited.

But combined, they have a major impact

on an entire ecosystem—

which includes a tiny part of China,

and huge parts of Myanmar,

Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

But don't worry,

nothing could possibly go wrong.

What?

That was a different dam

that burst in Laos.

Don't worry about it.

China to retaliate against new U.S. tariffs, stoking fear of trade war - Duration: 2:14.

The Trump administration announced a host of new tariffs on goods from China.

The decision follows a seven-month investigation into what Washington calls Beijing's theft

of intellectual property..., an issue that's long stood in the way of the two country's

trade relations.

The Asian giant vowed to formulate a resolute response.

Park Hee-jun zooms in on what could be a prelude to a trade war.

U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to impose tariffs on up to 60 billion U.S. dollars worth

of Chinese goods... has stoked fears of a trade war between the world's two biggest

economies.

According to Trump, China is responsible for the loss of thousands of American jobs and

a U.S. trade deficit worth hundreds of billions.

"But we have a trade deficit, depending on the way you calculate it, of 504 billion dollars.

Now some people would say it's really 375 billion dollars.

Many different ways of looking at it but any way you look at it, it is the largest deficit

of any country in the history of our world.

It's out of control."

But the administration said it's a retaliatory move against what it calls China's use of

pressure and intimidation to steal U.S. intellectual property.

In addition to the tariffs, the Trump administration also plans to restrict new Chinese investment

in America and take action against China at the World Trade Organization for what it calls

unfair trade practices.

The Chinese embassy in Washington, vowed to "fight to the end" in any trade war with

the United States.

Beijing's Commerce Ministry also announced in a statement that it plans to slap a 15-percent

tarriff on 120 categories of American agricultural and steel goods, and take legal action against

the U.S. at the WTO.

The prospect of a global trade war sent stock markets reeling.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell almost 3 percent after the announcement,... and fears

were even more evident in Asian markets, where in Hong Kong the Hang Seng fell as much as

3.7 percent and Japan's Nikkei by about 3.9 percent.

Warm and sunny but dusty air _ 032318 - Duration: 1:43.

Now we turn to our Michelle Park at the weather center for the latest updates.

Michelle, seems like conditions are finally warming up, but that also brought fine dust.

I hear it's going to get worst tomorrow.

Daniel, more smog from China is expected to blanket the peninsula,... dragging the air

quality to bad levels.

The whole nation can expect high concentrations of dust during the weekend.

And for the time being, thick fog is likely to lower visibility in the morning, so pay

extra attention on the roads.

The nation will kick off Saturday with chilly readings,...

Seoul starting the day at 4 degrees Celsius, Chuncheon chillier at zero degrees while Busan

is warm at 7 degrees Celsius.

The whole nation will see a huge jump into the afternoon,...

Seoul reaching 13 degrees while it's going to be milder everywhere else.

By the middle of next week, the mercury will rise even up into the twenties for Seoul,...

under clear sunny skies.

I'll leave you with the weather conditions around the world.
