What is up with all the clocks?

Hey everyone, Dana here!

And today is the first #FragDana video.

For future videos I am actually planning to answer more than just one question per video,

but I have gotten this question so many times, and while I believe that I touched on it a little

bit way back in my very first Q&A video, that was a pretty long time ago and I don't think

that I went into all the details about the background.

So I'm going kick the new series off with that general much-asked question today:

why all the clocks?

Is there some kind of bigger meaning here, or is it just that I like clocks?

So first of all, no it is not that I just like clocks.

I mean, I do like clocks, I guess.

They're great for telling time, but the background here is not about some kind of

interest that I have in clocks.

When I decided to start the Living Abroad series I had in mind to talk about travel

and different places and my experiences traveling and going to different places and cultures

and languages, so the idea for the clocks came from the sort of stereotypical newsroom

set up, where you have a clock with the time in London and you have a clock with the time

in New York and you have a clock with the time in Sydney.

But instead of just having plain old black and white clocks that all looked the same,

I wanted to have a bunch of different-looking, colorful clocks, and instead of having these

big cities from around the world like London and New York and Sydney, I wanted to have

places that were a little bit lesser known.

Or even a fictional place.

At the beginning we actually had a white wall with all different clocks, and when choosing the

cities or towns for those clocks, Stefan and I just sat down together and picked them out.

But then about a year in we created the blue wall and I needed some new cities and towns

to go with the new clocks, and so I asked in one of the videos back then for suggestions.

So some of these names, for example I believe Frankenmuth and maybe Nuuk, came from the

suggestions under that video, and some of them were, once again, ones that Stefan and

I decided on.

I believe that it was my dad who actually gave us the suggestion of Chicken, which is

in Alaska.

And this Torquay here is talking about the one in Australia. Not the one in the UK.

And then we have Bielefeld. This one over here is in India.

One of our friends went to university there.

And this one, Mos Eisley, from Star Wars, of course. Of course.

This one was at some point in time a real edible pretzel.

Now, however, obviously it's definitely not edible anymore.

But I took the pretzel and I dried it out by heating it in the oven at a really, really low temperature

over several hours, and then I glazed it with lacquer.

This one I made with small pieces from magazines that I rolled up into, kind of little straws

and then I rolled the straws into the circle designs.

And I've also made some coasters and some placemats with that technique.

Um, oh!

This one we printed out the twelves and put them in there.

So it was 12 going all around the clock. I thought that was really clever.

I really like that one. Kind of spooky, right? Ooooh!

It's always...I want to say it's always 12 after 12, but of course it's not 12 after 12.

It's always the time after...never mind. It's kind of spooky, right?

But why are the clocks not working?

Why are they all turned off?

Two reasons: number one, do you know how much ticking goes on when you have 7 clocks all

ticking together? No? Well it's a lot of ticking.

Which was both annoying and distracting when we were filming, as well as annoying and distracting

when just hanging out because this background here is located in our kitchen.

So we would have the ticking constantly going on when cooking, when eating, when just hanging out.

All the time. Ticking ticking ticking of the clocks. I like clocks but not that much.

And number two: I don't say my entire videos all the way through in one long take.

There are cuts in my videos.

There was one. And there. And there. And there was another one.

And having the clocks actually turned on and running was really distracting.

Sometimes there could be a couple minutes between parts of a video, or maybe I grab

something to drink or I take a break or whatever and then there's a longer break, so then

the clocks just flick from one time to the next in between the two cuts, and it was just,

it was really jarring how the clocks kept flicking to a new time throughout the video.

So that's the story behind the clocks on the wall.

Plus, yeah, we also thought that if we're going to have this little "studio" in

our kitchen, then it should be something that we wouldn't mind looking at while we ate dinner.

And, yeah, I don't mind looking at it. I like it. Looks nice in the kitchen.

So my question for you is: If you make videos, how did you come up with your background?

And if you don't make videos what kind of video background would you want to have if you did?

And what other questions do you have for me?

About life, about living abroad, about making videos?

Please let me know in the comments below with the hashtag #FragDana.

And yes, you did notice correctly, if you noticed it at all, that that is a different

hashtag from what I mentioned before.

And you're more than welcome to ask why down in the comments as a #FragDana question.

Thanks so much for watching.

Forgotten Realms Pantheon - Mielikki and Milil - Duration: 5:50.

Hello everybody Jorphdan here the PH is silent.

Thanks for joining me today as we deep dive into some more deities of the forgotten realms.

Today we're covering Mielikki the Forest Queen and Milil the lord of song.

Mielikki is a forest god.

Her portfolio includes forests, forest creatures, rangers, dryads, and the season of autumn.

Mielikki's symbol is that of a unicorn's head.

This confuses people into thinking that Mielikki is actually a unicorn, or takes the aspect

of a unicorn.

You can find Mielikki riding a unicorn at times but shouldn't be confused as the patron

of Unicorns.

She is the goddess of the woods and protects the creatures that live in it.

Mielikki actually makes her home on Faerun.

Because of this she was unaffected by the Time of Troubles, already spending her time

on the Prime Material Plane.

She serves Silvanus alongside Eldath and considers Eldath to be almost her sister, and Silvanus

a father figure.

Another belief is that Silvanus is the father of Mielikki but this is untrue; the confusion

comes from a name given to Mielikki.

She is commonly known as the "Daughter of Silvanus" but is not directly tied to Silvanus

in that way.

Mielikki is good-humored and quick to smile.

She dislikes speaking formally or leading large groups.

She is very loyal and protective to her friends but does not grant friendship lightly.

Clerics, druids and rangers follow Mielikki.

Mostly of good alignment but there are occasional neutral followers as well.

Although most rangers follow Gwareon Windstrom they do this as a connection to Mielikki.

Seeing her as too wild to pray to directly, but acknowledging that she is the goddess

of the forest.

Thus prayers are sent to Gwareon Windstrom to be delivered to Mielikki on behalf of the

worshiper.

Other followers of Mielikki are dryads, treants, woodsmen, the occasional elf (especially wood

elves), and a few bards.

The dogma of Mielikki's church is to stress the positive and outreaching nature of the

wild.

That intelligent beings can live in harmony with the wild.

Without requiring it's destruction.

Mielikkians are taught to embrace the wild and not fear it, the wild ways are good ways.

Many believe they are to live in the forest and be a part of the forest.

Because of this many forest rangers of Mielikki spend their whole lives in the forest.

Protecting trees and animal life from woodsmen and poachers.

Or anyone that would hunt for sport rather than food.

The clerics of Mielikki will live close to forests but among small communities.

There they preach the good word of Mielikki, attempting not only to convert but to teach

others that one can live harmoniously with nature.

There is no need to conquer, break, or tame nature.

Nature is there, it will protect and provide for you if you let it.

When called upon they will defend the forest with force of arms if necessary.

Mielikki followers tend to work against those that use fire magic.

That which can destroy an entire forest.

Because of this they are against the Red Wizards and followers of Kossuth.

Rangers of the faith are to be assisted whenever possible.

The most prominent center of their faith is located at the Falls of Tumbling Stars, west

of Lake Sember.

Mielikki doesn't really have temples but shrines set up in forests.

The localcation of the Falls of Tumbling Stars is hidden in a valley, and it's entrance

is guarded by rangers and half-elf archers of deadly skill.

Located here are holy bathing pools where wounded are restored to life by the magic

of Mielikki.

The clerics and rangers of Mielikki change their outfits with the color of nature.

So more whites in winter and greens in spring.

This helps them blend in with nature and provides camouflage on their adventures.

Up next is the deity of bards and song, Milil.

Milil is known as the Lord of Song, the Guardian of Singers, and the One True Hand of the All-Wise

Oghma.

His symbol is a silver harp, depicted with five strings whose body is made of silvery

leaves.

He is depicted as a handsome male human or elf, with a melodic voice.

Milil is the ultimate performer, and is worshiped by actors, musicians, entertainers of all

kinds, even some painters.

Milil is smart, and well-educated; he is a master of all sorts of performance techniques.

This has also made him self-centered and egotistical at times.

Milil loves to be the center of attention and can be frustrated when eyes are not on

him.

He easily bores and his mind tends to wander.

The followers of Milil tend to be Good or Neutral, never evil.

And can be either Lawful or Chaotic it does not matter.

Milil attracts those who love music, who need to be a part of it not merely a listener.

They love good wine, good food, pleasing art and architectural or natural surroundings.

His followers tend to be travelers, never staying in one spot too long and are active

performers.

Musicians, dancers, accomplished composers all worship Milil.

All temples of Milil have very good choirs, songmasters and organists.

The church of Milil is highly organized.

Its priests adhere to clear rules and organized hierarchy.

Each member is given a title that shows his or her place in the church order.

A novice at the lowest rank is known as a Mute One, with Songmaster being the title

for top senior clergy.

The temples are soaring cathedrals of splendid architecture.

With choir lofts, and facilities for stage performances.

The dogma of the church of Milil is inspiration, creativity.

Milil represents a finished thought, or taking an idea from conception to reality.

"Life is a song: Strive always to make it more beautiful.

Destroy no music nor instrument, nor stop a singer before the tune is done."

His priests are charged to listen to the world around as it fills your own soul with sound.

They are charged with singing to Milil every day, because music is the most precious thing

one can create.

The major center of worship is Arbalest's House in Athkatla.

Milil journeyed here during the Time of Troubles to personally found a singing circle.

The deity chose a man to oversee the building of this temple and it's become a most holy

place.

Other temples exist most notably in Waterdeep.

And that's it for today!

Milil sounds like an obvious choice for a bard deity, but honestly it would be fun to

play a cleric of Milil that took the entertainer background.

Maybe you can convince your DM to give you some choice bard spells as cleric ones.

Reminds me of Orpheus, because of the obsession with music, the arrogance, and the wandering

mind.

Deities like that can be a lot of fun.
