So.
Super Smash Bros. for Switch. That was wild huh?
And while we didn't get to see much from the short teaser, that doesn't mean we won't
break out the old Analysis Machine to see what other secrets and hidden details we can
discover.
Now we already posted a video taking a closer look at the character silhouettes shown and
we may have learned more since then.
But before we get to that, there's a few more details that have caught our eye.
So join us for a short analysis as we dive deeper into Smash on Switch.
Now, right off the bat, one thing a lot of people have been wondering is whether this
is a port or a brand new game.
Well, the fact that they didn't declare it as a port immediately already makes it
stand out from the trailer of every other Wii U game that's been ported to the Switch.
So that points to a new game.
Plus there's the fact that the logo is new with intersecting lines going through the
words like the Smash symbol itself.
Even the introduction of the title is different, leaning closer to Melee and Brawl rather than
Smash Bros for Wii U with the letters quickly snapping into place.
All this would seem to point to a proper sequel--as in, a brand new game--albeit one that lifts
elements from past entries in the series like every other Smash
But we're getting ahead of ourselves, because the trailer actually opens with a pair of
Inklings, confirming that they'll now be playable.
Both the boy and girl appear in their traditional Splatoon 1 outfits and designs, which makes
sense since these are the most instantly recognizable versions of the characters.
This beginning is also meant to invoke the original reveal of Splatoon back at E3 2014.
But that one only showed the Inkling Girl jumping from ink pools before revealing that
she was a kid.
Ending with blue ink being shot from everywhere as the trailer shifted to gameplay.
In this reveal, that idea has been greatly expanded, showing the Inklings engaged in
an actual battle and showing off what they're capable of.
The fact that we see both the boy and the girl leads us to believe that they'll likely
work like the Villager in Smash Bros for Wii U.
Both genders are an option, and we wouldn't be surprised if different haircuts, styles,
and ink colors were available to choose from.
The fight itself is very much a tease of what we might expect their moveset to be.
And though their segment is short, we can see them pull off three different moves.
The first is the use of the Splattershot though we're not sure how effective it might be
in Smash.
Will it rack up damage on opponents without stunning them like Fox's Blaster or will
it be felt like Falco's Blaster?
In Splatoon, it slowed your opponent down a bit so maybe it'll have the same effect
here.
The Inklings don't really have physical attacks in their series either, so maybe each
move will utilize a different weapon.
There's no evidence of that but the Splattershot doesn't have a lot variety in its attacks
except that it does allow the Inklings to speed away as Squids in the ink while recharging
their supply.
And considering we see the that the Inkling Girl's tank has less ink by the time the
Smash logo appears in the trailer, that mechanic is likely going to be present as well.
I mean, it is a key part being a kid and a squid.
So we think it's possible ink management will play a key role with this character, with
every attack having an ink cost.
And the final attack we see is the Splat Bomb that's tossed out making it seem like the
Inklings are definitely more long-range fighters.
Now while we see no hint of their possible Final Smash, it wouldn't surprise us if
it was based on one of Splatoon's Specials, like the Inkstrike.
But that's all we can really say before diving into pure speculation of how they might
work as characters.
Moving on, we only really see two other characters in any real detail despite the fact that both
are mostly kept in shadow.
Mario looks like--well--Mario.
There doesn't seem to be any major change to him and, no, there's sadly no sign of
Cappy--but it's always possible Cappy is just hiding his eyes, and saving that for
a potential later reveal.
Link, on the other hand, has seen a pretty massive change as he's now clearly modeled
after his Breath of the Wild appearance rather than Twilight Princess.
His hair is the same (including those amazing sideburns!), we can see the bow on his back,
and his sword has been unsheathed.
But could this change in design also mean a change in his moves?
After all, this Link doesn't actually use a Hookshot and the boomerang is just another
weapon.
Could that be replaced with the Magnesis Rune to bring opponents to him?
Perhaps his recovery will involve Revali's Gale and the Glider?
Might he use the Bomb Rune, which could also be detonated remotely, rather than the standard
bombs?
And could his bow have a change as well?
Maybe randomly using different types of arrows?
Heck, even his guard could use Daruk's Protection instead of the usual bubble much like Yoshi
hiding in his egg.
It could even shatter like in Breath of the Wild.
This may seem like a simple costume tweak at first glance, but it could lead to a lot
of potential changes for Link as a character--including a new Final Smash that may even involve the
Divine Beasts in some way.
And what could this mean for the other Zelda characters?
Zelda was also based on her Twilight Princess form before, but could she see a Breath of
the Wild-style update too?
Then we have Sheik, Ganondorf, and Toon Link, none of whom appear in Breath of the Wild
at all--obviously in Toon Link's case.
Assuming they make it back we're guessing they'd largely retain their current forms,
though we'd love if Ganondorf took some inspiration from his Hyrule Warriors moveset
instead of being based off Captain Falcon's.
Finally, what else do new characters usually bring with then?
Yeah you know it: Stages.
So since the Inkling's appear to be based on Splatoon 1, maybe we'll get an Inkopolis
stage with Callie and Marie in the background?
Perhaps during a Splatfest?
Or it could be a traveling stage that goes to the various battlegrounds.
Maybe it'll even feature good old DJ Octavio?
As for Breath of the Wild--man who knows, there's literally thousands of possibilities.
So maybe it'll also be a touring stage?
Or maybe focus on the dilapidated Hyrule Castle or the Great Plateau.
There's a lot to choose from.
And that's really it when it comes to the trailer beyond all the character silhouettes
visible in the logo's flames.
Now we've already made our own video looking at this and giving our ideas on some of the
possibilities, which we'll have a link to in the description below.
However, there's a lot of ideas about who these characters could be flying around right
now.
The only 100% consistent ideas are Donkey Kong, Marth, Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu,
Samus, and Bowser.
Beyond that though, it's pretty much an inkblot test.
You'll see what you want to see.
We've already offered up our ideas, so we wanted to highlight two other people with
ideas of their own.
First vaanrose, a Smash modder on Twitter.
He saw Yoshi, Pit, Peach, Ness, Sheik, Fox, Captain Falcon, and Wario.
It doesn't fill in all the gaps and we can't be sure about any of them, but we do feel
that the Yoshi idea at the very least has merit.
The other is from Nibroc.Rock on Twitter, a 3D digital artist with a focus on Sonic
the Hedgehog.
He mostly agreed with vaanrose except he believes Yoshi and Pit are actually Bowser Jr, the
figure to the right of Samus is Zelda, and that it shows Robin instead of Captain Falcon.
These seem a little less likely to us especially since Zelda is now more likely to appear in
her Breath of the Wild form, unless Sheik is still there and Zelda keeps her Twilight
Princess design.
But again, we could be right in our assumptions or these two could or we could all be wrong
with some of our guesses.
That's kind of the beauty of Smash.
We're always kept guessing about what could come next.
And now that Smash Bros. has been announced for the Nintendo Switch, that cycle begins
anew as we wait for it to release this year.
Of course, if we missed anything let us know in the comments.
