How's it going guys?
today we will be talking about these pictures,
that I took some time ago,
for a sports fashion magazine.
I gonna tell you step by step,
how this job was done.
and also,
I'm gonna tell you
how much you can make as a fashion photographer.
let's suppose that you got a phone call,
from a magazine fashion editor,
asking your availability to photograph on a specific day.
so you check your schedule.
You're good to go,
and then the editor is gonna
give you a few details about the job.
first of all they're gonna tell you what the theme is.
in our case here, it was jogging wear.
Secondly, the editor is gonna tell you
whether they want the pictures taken on location,
studio...or both!
in our case here it was only location.
the editor was clear about something,
they want some kind of urban images.
They don't want pictures taken on the park,
They don't want pictures taken on the beaches,
And they don't want props too!
I asked how about bicycles or skateboards?
Or, you know, stuff like that!
They said no.
only jogging!
we set up a meeting
and I went to see the editor.
just before I went to see the editor,
As I knew that the pictures were gonna be taking on location,
I went around town doing a little bit of
location scouting.
looking for a nice Avenue, nice buildings or nice walls,
something that resembles
urban spaces.
I took a few pictures with on my iPhone,
and went to see the editor.
At the meeting the editor showed me a layout ,
of how
the pictures were supposed to be shown in the magazine.
a layout looks,
briefly, something like this.
the editor is gonna show you something like that.
two pages here, two pages here, and two pages here.
they're gonna
tell you how many models there is gonna be in each page.
say it's gonna be one model here,
and they might tell you that on the next page,
there's gonna be four pictures here.
and
in each picture,
the number of models that they want to have,
one model here,
Two here,
two again here,
and another one here.
maybe they want this picture to be
taken on landscape mode.
something like that!
so a model is here,
and another one is a bit far away back,
another one is here, and another one is here.
So it is a 'spread'.
they want to have probably a headshot here,
and two more models here.
That's basically how a layout looks like.
when you go to the meeting
that's what they're gonna show you.
in our case here,
the editor showed me this.
six pages.
in each page you're gonna have just one model.
the editor asked me
to leave some space on the top left of the picture
for something that we call 'windows'.
Let's put it here.
what is it for?
you might have a close-up of
a pocket with a zipper,
you gonna have a close-up of the details here,
right here!
apart from close-up,
what you can have also is,
text!
there might be some titles here or
Titles there,
or titles here,
or a box here and a window here,
another title across,
And another title maybe here.
the editor is going to tell you briefly.
how the design of the page is gonna be done.
you're gonna have to keep it in mind
when taking the photos.
you know that you're gonna have to leave
some space on the top left of the picture
for that window.
I know that the theme is jogging wear,
I know there's gonna
be just one model,
and I know that we're gonna photograph six different pictures.
I think to myself,
what does a jogger do?
they jog, right?
six photos of the guy jogging.
I don't think it's gonna look interesting.
I have jogged a few times.
I'm not a fan of it.
what do you do before jogging?
you stretch, right?
stretching a little bit,
then you drink water,
then you jog, then you take a break,
then you do your
shoelaces.
You get prepared to go to jog.
That's what people do, yeah?
What if we have a picture of the guy stretching...
then another one jogging,
then another one doing his shoelaces,
and then jogging again,
And then the other one
He just finished jogging.
He's drinking water and,
again, jogging again.
three pictures or the guy running,
and three pictures of the guy stretching,
doing the shoelaces and drinking water.
could be okay, yeah?
the editor liked the idea. GOOD!
so, let's do it!
we're gonna go through the pictures
that I took of different locations,
when I took the pictures of the locations,
I already had something in mind.
I thought,
maybe the model is here,
pretending that he's doing something,
here is doing that.
I had a few things in mind.
when I met the editor I showed the pictures taken with my iPhone.
I said, what if we photograph at this place here,
the guy running across?
how about this place here?
the guy running towards the camera?
how about this place here?
He is doing his shoelaces.
as if he's just leaving his home?
ready to go for a jog?
how about this place here?
it is more simple.
the guy is drinking water and taking a break?
I was trying like to persuade the editor with my ideas.
Sometimes the editors have their own ideas.
They say, let's do like this!
you have your ideas too!
in this case
Why don't you photograph both?
photograph what the editor has in mind,
and also photograph what you have in mind.
the editor is gonna have both pictures in front of them,
and what if they like yours better than theirs?
Sometimes opposite,
they like theirs better than yours.
so we have to,
sometimes, take two different variations of the same picture.
the editor has a choice, ok?
let's talk about the jogging pictures.
this picture here the guy is running across.
easy, yeah?
set your camera there,
You know I mean?
make a nice composition.
the frame is good,
the guy is gonna have to run across.
I have to leave a space,
up left or bottom left of the picture,
for the window.
I have to know that this guy,
when he hits this point here,
That's when I'm gonna photograph.
what did they do?
I put two marks on the ground.
And I told the guy, run, long steps,
when you land with your foot there...
I take the picture! yeah?
Got it? Got it! so do it!
Man, this guy did it over and over and over and over again.
he never hit the god damn spot there.
Can you come over here?
have a look at this thing here.
You have to step here, Jack!
You got it?
Yeah, I got it! yeah!.
Let's go back and do that again, Jack!
so he goes.
Sharp!!
that was good!
I got it!
space for the windows.
all good! this picture was
Excellent!
the next two shots,
the guy was gonna be running towards the camera.
I was thinking, hmmm!
Running towards the camera,
and I have to leave space for the windows,
and for the boxes,
and for the titles.
I would have to run backwards, yeah?
I want the guy to be jogging, not just like...
I want to get the feeling that he was really jogging.
so, speed! yeah?
I couldn't match his speed
running backwards, with a camera in my hand.
Worried about leaving a space there for the windows,
and for the boxes,
for the titles. Wow. How I'm gonna do it?
Boom. A wheelchair!!
yeah? pretty good idea!!.
we rented this $20 a day wheelchair.
my assistant is pulling back.
I am sitting there with a camera locked,
the guy is where I wanted him to be!
I'm not shaking so it's okay!
I can lock on the guy,
And then I can actually even tell him what I want him to do!
look left! look right! breathe like this! breathe like that!
You know? to give the feel that the guy is really jogging!
the speed...
my assistant is...wow!!
it's like yeah, man!! I got you right there !!
perfect!! yeah?
for this is specific photo,
I want to photograph in the middle of this street.
You know I mean?
photographing a little bit from below,
with a wide angle lens,
with all these buildings,
would look great, yeah?
But then, the editor thought...
...hmmmm...
maybe it is not a good idea!
because the police is gonna show up and we're gonna all be a arrested,
and get 15 years in prison!
alright, let's change plans!!
I found is this open ground there,
with a very few people in there,
All right, let's do it here!
it was much more comfortable,
so comfortable, so good, so easy!
I decided to do something different!
sometimes I have some weird ideas!
But hey?!
when you're photographing out there,
if you have an idea,
just do it!!
if it doesn't work, at least you have fun!
the editors are gonna see that at least there was an effort!
Yeah? I go upside down on that chair,
photographing from below!
it was hard to get back to my sitting position!
by the end of the story, they didn't use the picture!
because the guy's legs looked too long!!
looks like a spaghetti!
Didn't work!
forget about that one! but the other photo was okay!
You know what I mean? the guys looks nice,
Breathing,
looks cool!
I like that shot a lot!!
the wheelchair worked pretty good for that one!
the other photo,
we had this open ground again.
the buildings are down there,
the blue sky,
the guy breathing,
he didn't have his sneakers,
he is wearing some kind of sandals!
I was directing him a bit more!
squint a little bit...
give me that James Dean look,
a bit of wrinkles in the forehead,
Just breathing, it was easy!!
no, not easy! but interesting!!
I was photographing between
28 and 35 mm,
somewhere around there!
you see that
I'm very close to him!
he is filling up the frame!
is pretty good, almost bleeding out of the magazine!
I thought it was a very nice photo!
for the opening page,
the stretching!!
I found this
walkway, nice perspective.
showing the plants in the back.
Easy, just go there and stretch!
I made another variation,
I am standing almost in the middle of the street!
the cars are zooming behind me, just a few feet away!
I was scared!
but, let's do the job!!
just stretch yourself down a little bit!
the end of the story, the other photo taken on the walkway was more interesting!
this one here,
he seems to be leaving his house,
going somewhere,
do the shoelaces!
as if preparing to go jogging somewhere!
finally, this one here...
Is a very simple one.
photo was taken a little bit from above.
I had the camera locked on tripod
because there were a few things
that I didn't want to see!
photographing from above,
from that high.
it wouldn't work without a tripod.
I don't like to erase stuff in Photoshop .
yeah, it was simple! just stick your muscles out!
pretend to be a super macho guy!!
Oh my god. What a laugh It was!
have a look at the video, the video is pretty cool!
you can see how the atmosphere was
during the photoshoot!
check this out!
pretty nice, yeah?
we had a great time, we start at 7 o clock in the morning, by 1 or 2 p.m.
We're done!
drinking beer, eat
Yeah, get all those calories that we spent during the photoshoot back,
because I like my calories, yeah?
you should do it too!
why don't you rent a wheelchair...
Yeah?
Get a friend to pull you back.
get another friend who likes jogging to run towards the camera...
make some funny things there!
and maybe you get some nice pictures together,
who knows?
Why don't you go and show it to a magazine out there?
what if they call you for a job?
hey, we want you to photograph something just like what you did there!
you have nothing to lose? yeah? just do your story!
You know what I mean?
you have a nice camera!.
You have the friends, haven't you?
just rent a wheelchair.
20 dollars a day is nothing, Yeah?
now let's go to the point
That I guess everyone wants to know!
how much do they pay you to do the job ?
they pay you by the page.
Different publishers have different prices,
the price ranges between
$180 up to
$250 per page.
let's make an average of two hundred dollars per page.
in our case here
We have six pages.
1200 dollars.
plus the
Photoshop retouching.
Again, we have different publishers.
They pay differently,
but the average is around fifty dollars per page,
six pages,
In my mathematics here, makes $300 for retouching!
1200 dollars for the photoshooting.
that makes
$1,500
then printing and stuff like that.
you probably will have to print a few pictures,
and send pictures along with
a CD with the data!
why do you have to send the prints along?
because everyone has got a different monitor.
It means that different monitors have different colors.
you have to print your stuff
as close as possible to what
the data looks like!
that kind of blue is that kind of blue.
that kind of red is
As close as possible.
you have to make sure that your printer and your monitor are well calibrated.
Yeah?
you give this data to the guy who's gonna print the magazine,
of course it has got a different monitor.
might be or
might not be calibrated.
we don't know!
he's gonna take the print as a
reference.
once they're doing the tests to see how the colors are gonna look like,
they can compare
to your reference, and then they say, oh yeah!
this is good! boom! the magazine is gonna go on printing, yeah?
when I said that's
$200 per page,
it is per page!!
it doesn't matter how many pictures you have in the page,
you can have four pictures of page,
you can have ten pictures per page.
I don't know what kind of magazine you're gonna shoot for!
What if you have...
...three double pages!
so it means that you have three cuts, yeah?
that's great!!
you're gonna shoot three cuts,
In three hours, and make $1,200!!
That's great now. I just love this kind of jobs!
get 20 of these jobs a month and you're gonna be alright
I have to say also that some of these top photographers out there,
like Mario Testino and guys like that,
they do have their own designers.
There is no such a thing like a 'page thing'.
They are hired to do a job.
and the magazine want their style on the job,
so then, in this case here, they charge
whatever they like!
of course, if they charge a lot,
the magazine is gonna call someone else.
They have to be within the market.
Yeah, but these guys,
they make a lot of money.
as I said, they have their own designers,
so the magazines gonna give them a bunch of different clothes to shoot,
And then they gonna pick the location that they like,
all right. Let's go photoshoot in Tahiti or
whatever you like.
just go there and take the pictures!
and
get these super top models,
that are not cheap at all,
so the photographer is not cheap,
the models not cheap,
the stylist is not cheap,
the hair makeup artist is not cheap.
Everyone's big-time!
I mean, they all have their names already in the market!
they have been there for ages,
they're the ones!
in our case here
the editor showed me the layout of the magazine,
they already have something in mind,
they probably had a meeting already with their
graphic designer,
let's display the pictures like this!
But in the case of Mario Testino and these other top guys,
they decide whether the picture is gonna be taking in landscape mode,
if It's gonna be a double page,
gonna be a single page,
is gonna be like this this this,
they decide whether they want to go
to do it in studio or location,
they have the final word!
these guys are doing great?
You know, probably one job that they make out there
is the equivalent for me, to do twenty jobs like this one here,
per month in Japan.
Well, eventually I will get there!
will I? I hope so.
But, if not, it is okay too!!
just keep doing your thing and eventually,
If you do it with passion and love,
eventually somebody's gonna call you to do even a better job,
because your name is gonna be out there!
I mean, people who are into fashion business,
they're gonna see the credit of who took this picture!
They'll see your name there.
They might call the magazine asking for your telephone number,
or maybe even Google it!
maybe you have a website up there,
with your pictures and stuff and they can find you!
it has happened to me before,
And I was surprised to get phone calls from magazines from
Europe and even advertising agencies,
asking me to do some kind of jobs, that was like, wow Jack!!
That's so good. Yeah, of course. I wanna do this!!
Just do it with passion, love, don't give up!
keep looking for new things,
You know what I mean?
have fun!
for me, the photographer is pretty much like a conductor of the orchestra,
I mean, it's the guy who is making the music flow,
And everyone's looking at you,
the model is looking at you,
the hair makeup artists is looking at you.
the editor is looking at you,
Everyone is looking at you!
you are the guy!
if you have a good vibe,
everyone's gonna feel good!
and then everyone will even recommend you,
I have been
Introduced to a job by a hair makeup artist,
he had a great time working with me,
he went down there,
I just met this photographer out there,
and he is pretty good.
We should work with him!!
then I got a phone call from that magazine.
It's a word-of-mouth!
very soon you gonna be getting calls and calls and calls,
and you're gonna find yourself busier busier and busier!
okay Jack?
Yeah, let me show you the preview of the video
I gonna be uploading here next week,
Yeah, have a look!

nice to have you here!!
