I played Kirby Star Allies…..
SURPRISE….
It was a very basic Kirby game.
I tooootallyyyy couldn't have known that before playing it.
Kirby fanboys were SO RIGHT.
First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR 10 THOUSAND SUBSCRIBERS!
We're happy to see you guys have been enjoying the videos we've been putting out.
Reaching milestones like this will only make it easier for us to bring you better content,
eventually more often.
Next step is 50k.
Thanks again.
NOW ON TO THE VIDEO!
Let me reiterate, Kirby Star Allies is a fine game.
It certainly isn't BAD, which, I expected.
& I never intended to give the impression that I thought that it would be.
MY PROBLEM with the game is it's entirely too safe for a franchise as old as Kirby.
Also, I'm aware that Logan's video on Yoshi that came out this week is on a similar
topic.
I just thought this whole Kirby Star Allies saga needed some closure, also, I have a bit
more to say so, here we go.
Kirby Star Allies is selling GREAT it's currently at the top of the Japanese software
charts, it's the best selling Kirby game in UK history, I can only imagine what success
it's having in the US, we won't know for sure until NPD for March is released.
I'm happy about that because I like the character and successes for Nintendo's 1st
party is always good to see.
Despite this, I hope Nintendo uses this as a sign that Kirby is a character that demands
a level of success that they're not fully taking advantage of.
Not that they can continue to make games in the same vein.
Zelda games were selling great leading up to Breath of the Wild, they still strived
for more.
Kirby can follow a similar framework.
My experience with Star Allies was a frustrating one.
I found myself wishing I enjoyed more about it that was just the attention to detail on
a visual level.
I loved things like Kirby's ice skating… cause…
c'mon….. it's *censored* adorable.
I also like the jumping on the heads of your friends.
EVEN IF, it's often times more frustrating to actually do than need be, I like thee usual
Kirby with mask and snorkel, I like kissing my friends to heal them.
IT'S JUST LIKE REAL LIFE!
There's an obvious trend here.
None of the things that I found the least bit interesting had ANYTHING to do with the
gameplay.
Again, that doesn't necessarily mean I think the game is BAD, at best it lacks ambition
but is an ok pallet cleanser for literally anything.
At worse it's a poorly spent $60.
I'd definitely recommend it, but, for half the current price.
MAYBE $40 if you're desperate for something new to say.
There's NO excuse for that.
NONE.
That didn't stop people from trying to, though.
Something I'm learning as we grow this community & as a result rank decently in search as well
as in suggested videos, we attract a bunch of super fans *cough* fanboys *cough.* Obviously
those fans love Kirby for what it is but simultaneously have absolutely no faith in the computer engineers,
level designers, & game directors that have made these games what they are to change it
enough to be interesting for people that aren't as complacent, as well those diehard fans.
These diehard fans presented a few counter arguments to my last Kirby video.
The go to counters were all either completely unrelated to what I was saying, wishful thinking,
or unsubstantiated.
Let's go deeper.
The first complaint was about the game not being out yet, which, from my perspective,
has 0 merit.
My criticisms of the game had everything to do with the game being marketed to me.
If Kirby Star Allies was going to be THAT different from what I've seen leading up
to its release, they did a terrible job marketing it.
It's the job of marketing to detail the scope of a game, which was my complaint.
Quality notwithstanding.
I'd understand this if I said "KIRBY STAR ALLIES CONTROLS LIKE GARBAGE!
WORLD 2 HAS TERRIBLE LEVEL DESIGN!
THE NEW COPY ABILITIES SUCK!"
All of that would've been ridiculous to say before playing the game.
Saying "I wish this game was more ambitious" is a desire you can reasonably have after
consuming the available advertising for a game.
The biggest complaint BY FAR was that "Kirby is meant to be easy.
It's a kids game."
This defense, I feel, is the weakest of the bunch.
I find myself saying A LOT as someone who talks about Nintendo every week Every Thursday
& Saturday at 4pm eastern time.
SUBSCRIBE!…
I know you didn't I see you….
Oh nonono don't worry.
I'm a patient and reasonable man…
I'll wait…
Even games that are made for kids should be mechanically interesting (which is not mutually
exclusive with difficulty, by the way,) especially if you expect to spark their imagination throughout
the entirety of the game & most importantly help them to become better gamers while simultaneously
ensuring that they stick with the medium as it grows with them.
What Kirby COULD serve to do is to be a game that helps the player elevate their skills
as they move on.
A game came be pleasant and also ramp up in complexity as you play through it after all.
Games are capable of scaling.
Even games made for adults know that not everyone that plays them is coming into them at the
same level.
Games like Resident Evil 4 & more recently the Uncharted series are famous examples of
games that adjust difficulty automatically based on how you perform.
The attitude that Kirby needs to be frictionless to continue to attract children and super
casual gamers is ridiculous.
Mario, for instance is another game that is approachable for children and casual fans,
the difference is, it presents a challenge and scales that challenge as you move on.
Recent games have even given the option to have SUPER easy modes assist you in clearing
problematic stages.
THIS is how you create a game that will be embraced by ALL, introduce scaling.
Game design exists, if you can't teach players how to play your game by playing it, no matter
how difficult, that's the fault of the design.
Not the skill level of the player.
As a kid I used to play The Lion King on SNES and had a great time doing so, I've watched
young kids beat Calamity Ganon with no problem at all.
Kids are capable of much more than what Kirby presents to them on a depth level.
I say all of this despite having the knowledge that HAL has said that Kirby isn't meant
to be something only small children play.
It's only meant to be approachable.
The "i t's for kids" anecdote is just something ill informed diehards use as a defense
for the game they like.
As I continually say, Mario is approachable, AND there's challenge, new mechanics, interesting
level design introduced in those games.
Hell, Sakurai's games as a whole are approachable, the difference being, all of those scale.
Kirby doesn't.
Except for in mini games…
Which, I'll get to.
I am well aware that Sakurai no longer works on this series.
Don't even waste the time leaving that comment.
The closest Kirby games get to scaling is in the mini games.
An offshoot of this argument was that Kirby was originally designed to be played with
2 buttons.
This is a VERY flawed argument.
Kirby was also originally designed to play on a 144p screen.
This logic would mean Kirby playing in 1080p is BLASPHEMOUS!
Mario was originally a Donkey Kong character.
Grand Theft Auto used to be a top down 2D game.
Things change.
It's the job of a tech and entertainment company to push forward.
The reason they don't change is the fans that are complacent not because it's against
their values.
They're like animals in captivity, why work for your meal when it's brought to you with
little to no effort on your part?
The same fans that likely scoff at a game like Call of Duty for being unchanged but
in the same breath praise a game like Kirby Star Allies.
Kirby as a franchise evolves at a snails pace.
& that wouldn't be the case if they fanbase had higher standards.
Most of the interesting things in the games leading up to and including Star Allies have
been the exception, not the rule.
I played against ONE boss that in Star Allies that I stopped and thought "huh, that's
a neat mechanic."
AND EVEN THAT ultimately fell short due to not using that mechanic with a new twist as
the fight went on.
So many people have said to me "YOU NEED TO PLAY THE FINAL BOSS IN ROBOBOT!"
That's the platformer equivalent of "the game gets good at 40 hours."
If the bulk of the game is uninteresting, you won't see me playing through it to get
to one notable part.
There's plenty of interesting things that already exist in past Kirby games as detached
pieces.
If HAL were to combine what they've learned from micro games like Kirby Battle Royale
or even things like Star Slam Heroes.
Implementing them into the whole of the boss fights, the overall level design, or anywhere
in between it would make the games infinitely more interesting.
Instead Kirby games take all of the things that could amount to an innovative highly
anticipated game by much more than the established fanbase and squanders that potential by settling
for making them mini games.
Imagine if instead of being able to cook, use runes, or climb in Breath of the Wild
they were all made into separate mini games, its impact would've been dampened for sure.
& despite the fact that the comments are inevitable, scope doesn't equal difficulty.
A more ambitious game wouldn't then magically become prohibitively difficult.
There are training wheel-like mechanics to help provide the very same frictionless gameplay
some of you know and love, it's on the developers to allow that to scale in the other direction
as well.
EVEN IF they couldn't go about changing Kirby by making it 3D for the 1st time in
a full fledged game because of the relative increase in general skill required.
Which by the way is ridiculous, the most popular current games with kids are 3D. Lego games
are 3D, Minecraft is 3D, *censored* BARBIE GAMES ARE 3D!!!
I digress.
Making a 2D Kirby game ambitious wouldn't be too hard either.
Better design the levels to push back against Kirby's ability to float rather than it
being a win button, add better puzzle-like challenges rather than requiring a specific
power, design ways to clear those challenges with any power and leave it to the player
to find out what that solution is for their current power.
This would lessen the tedium of moments like finding secrets in Star Allies and learning
that you have the wrong power to get through the room.
Make the majority of the bosses more interesting to fight (key word INTERESTING, not necessarily
HARDER.)
& FOR THE LOVE OF WISPY WOODS MAKE IT AT LEAST 10 HOURS!
The most baffling thing I've seen die hard fans saying was "why does every game need
to be ambitious."
That, is the very definition of complacency.
I will never even begin to understand the mentality of someone that responds to a fellow
fan of a character, wanting it to raise to greater heights like that.
Imagine being the dude that said "BLACK PANTHER DOESN'T NEED TO BE A MOVIE!
IT'S FINE AS A COMIC!"
That's how I see the people that respond to me saying Kirby games should be more ambitious
in a negative way.
If you're not working to improve, your work is ultimately meaningless.
You're as good as your last time at bat and all of that.
& Kirby Star Allies, just as expected, was ultimately a downer in comparison to any other
big Nintendo I.P release on Switch.
That didn't have to be the case.
Beyond that, if every Nintendo game needs to be priced the same, they should be developed
with the same amount of care.
There's plenty of simple games on other platforms that I'm completely fine with.
Those games are made by much smaller companies, starring relatively unknown characters, for
a much more reasonable price.
There's no reason a game that can be cleared in less than 6 hours with low levels of skill
should be $60.
The only reason Kirby gets away with it is the power it wields as a franchise that people
have loved for more than 25 years.
I think they should be using that power to make a game worth recommending for that money.
Keep in mind I'm not saying length is a universal metric for worth, there just needs
to be something there to justify the price.
There have been $60 walking sims with phenomenal stories, $60 multiplayer only games with best
in show gameplay.
Kirby doesn't offer anything like that.
Even as best game for kids I'd recommend Mario Odyssey over it.
But, those are MY thoughts.
What do YOU think?
Is Kirby firing on all cylinders?
Or do you think Kirby has the potential to be more than it is?
Let me know in the comments!
