the Kea is the only Alpine parrot in the world
hi what's going on everybody my name is Brandon I'm a marine biologist and an
artist and welcome to nature meets paper the place where we go on an adventure to
discover the world of marine biology I love sharing my passion of the ocean and
it's creatures with you nature meets paper is a place where I share my
experiences and interactions with aquatic creatures with you through a
storytelling science and art today we're actually not gonna be focusing on marine
science we're actually gonna go hiking up into the mountains today we're gonna
be discovering the kea parrot are you ready
let's go hiking the key of parrot is endemic to the southern island of new
zealand this means they are only found in New Zealand the word is Maori for the
sound the parrot makes they make a sound like key ah so Kea they enjoy living in
the lowland valleys forests and Alpine ridges of the southern island
occasionally the Kea parrot is found on the northern island but it is not common
there are fossils that place a relative of the Kea parrot on the northern island
but it is not common today Kea parrots can be found on rocky outcrops
socializing in pine forests and near the tree line of the mountains let's
discover the Kea parrot if you were in New Zealand and wanted to
see one what would you be looking for Kea are large olive green parrots they
grow to 49 centimetres or 19 inches tall
males are roughly 20% larger than females and have longer beaks
they have a long hooked upper beak that allows them to scrape and crush food
they're covered in olive green feathers with bright orange under the wings they
have a black tip tail and wings adults have gray feet beaks and eye rings this
is helpful when determining the age of the parrot juveniles have bright yellow
eye rings and skin where their beaks attach to their face Kea are commonly found in
groups up to 13 individuals they don't do well on their own I hope this helps
identify the key apparent what do Kea parrots eat and how are they doing Kea
parrots are omnivores they eat all sorts of plant and animal material they eat
seeds nuts bugs berries fruit carcasses from deer
other animals and sheep as that list went on things that they eat got weirder
and weirder I didn't know parents will eat meat in the early 1800s farmers were
reporting kea feeding on their flocks of sheep they weren't eating the whole
sheep of course they would just take bites out of the sheep and feed on the
fat this didn't directly kill the sheep but it caused serious infections that
led to death these claims were rumors until the 1960s when parrots were filmed
attacking sheep this scared the farmers causing them to search out and kill the
parrots this unfortunately is common for people to do several species have been
the target of attacks from people the IUCN Red List has been listed as
endangered the last report was filed October 1st 2017 they found there are
roughly 6,000 parrots left in the world this may seem like a large number but
when you stretch it over 4 million hectares of land that is
pretty thin the report says they are still decreasing in numbers to this day
I don't want this series to be sad I want it to be fun and exciting getting
people excited about adventure and seeing these strange and wacky world
let's get into the personal story segment of this episode this is another
one of my sister's experiences from one she it to New Zealand houses and cabins
have hooks for your coat to dry as well as places for you to tie your shoes up
apparently the kea parrot is curious and not afraid to interact with people they
are known as the clown's of the mountain they steal people's belongings and
shoelaces if your shoes are laying around and not tied together the parrot
will take your shoelaces out of your shoes and leave this is problematic when
you are several miles into your hiking adventure luckily this never happened to
my sister they are also sometimes destructive they like pecking and
pulling apart rubber it can be shoes it could be stuff in your backpack or the
sealant on your car that is bad for the person who owns these things I will
leave this mischievous parrot and call this adventure finished
