Claims of life & nonsensical proofs,
To you they are but jokes insufficient to kill boredom.
Acting as the leader of a foolish group,
Your enumerated & childish theories.
Love which believed in "infinity" & what's beyond the sky...
Now you may be juggling around Steins;Gate because it involves time travel
I absolutely understand how the premise can be off-putting
Since many have tried yet have failed to make a well fleshed out story with time travel
Mechanics that were easy enough to understand,
And at least had something resembling continuity,
Without a ridiculous amount of unmotivated and expository dialogue.
While it starts off a little bit slow the great thing about it is that's a progressive grind through
Okabe Rintaro's & Makise Kurisu's thrilling journey through time,
With confrontational, subtle, yet robust drama...
I won't remember that you called me Kusisu, right?
As right off the bat, I'll tell you that I had & would recommend Steins;Gate in a heartbeat
Where despite being the third of the first three anime productions that White Fox has produced,
It's an awfully impressive and engaging watch as despite not being perfect in terms of animation in art direction,
Steins;Gate certainly excels in areas where it counts the most such as the dub..
I'm sorry..
I'm so sorry
Why have I even lived this long?
I forgot my duty & spent my life doing nothing.
Forgive me! Forgive me! Forgive me! Forgive Me!
Okabe Rintaro...
To my knowledge, very few asides from White Fox themselves has made an anime including time travel since and better.
If you're looking for the best crop of the bunch, this is pretty much it.
And with Steins;Gate Zero almost finished airing right now [At the time of recording]*
I thought I'd share my opinions on why I thought of past adaptations before I comment on the latest entry
I already know that!!
Where am I ?
The heart of what's at Steins;Gate's core is a story about mystery and doubles down as something also
Resembling a thriller and not to mention a squishy romance..
Don't wet yourself...
The story is about Okabe's journey to save his friends,
As he and other Future Gadget lab members are caught within the terrible repercussions
Of their time travel experiments,
Toying with and altering time when the lab members get perhaps a little bit too curious..
Now, we wait for the message to reach the phone...
They should be ready about now..
Wait!
Though much before that Okabe accidentally discovers time-travel
With a makeshift gadget consisting of a microwave and a cell phone
Where they're able to send messages into the past called D-mail to change the events of the past
That have transpired up until that point
Slowly, but surely from there on does the world of time travel slowly draws in anyone and everyone involved with their
Small makeshift lab in Akihabara where they continue to experiment with the discovery
regardless of how trivial and small that involvement may be..
Which then sprawls into a conspiracy concerning the dangerous technology known as time travel.
The catalyst for these events is when Okabe accidentally time travels into the past,
Beforehand witnessing a girl murdered in cold blood
As later on after unknowingly time traveling to the past
He once again meets the redhead who we come to know as Makise Kurisu.
Which then the first series of meetings is pretty hilarious,
As Kurisu does a great job at sadistically obliterating Okabe in a seminar involving time travel.
Makise Kurisu...
From this, we can see that time travel is unrealistic in the context of cosmic string theory.
Any arguments, Hououin-san?
I see, then please find some "exotic matter" for us, Hououin-san.
That concludes my line of reasoning,
but if you have any rebuttals, I'm all ears, Hououin-san.
Argh!! Don't be so damned arrogant just because you're a little bit of a genius!!
In Stein's;Gate the general frame of focus revolves around two central actors that drive the series forward,
Makise Kurisu & Okabe Rintaro
Both of which are the nucleus of the series.
At first they both seem to fall within their own general character archetypes Okabe playing the role as an over eccentric mad scientist,
& Kurisu being a sharp and clever tsundere character with a guilty pleasure of being a secret otaku.
Where Okabe is not role-playing as a mad scientist
He can generally be quite nice also showing a keen
Determination in his desperation in trying to save future Gadget Lab members by altering the past..
Though most of the time he's busy from provoking & butting heads with his antithesis
Kurisu, while she does the same as well.
Anyways, though even despite bickering back and forth,
Kurisu quickly develops feelings for Okabe,
Though oftentimes, we can catch her off guard or embarrassed when an unexpectedly romantic
Or somewhat intimate scenario arises.
Where the part of her that hates Okabe's guts & general antics,
Won't allow herself to be caught dead admitting she's developing feelings for that same dork..
Yeah, yeah..
You just want to abuse me as your assistant, right?
Because you're my dear companion that's why..
Th-Thanks..
Wai.. Wha..
Oww!
What are you doing?!
More on that later though as we also get to know more about other main characters such as Okabe's buddies,
People such as Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hashida or Daru for short.
Though of course Makise Kurisu also becomes part of this small circle of friends where we get to know more about her
As they another slowly investigate the time travel phenomenon and how to perfect it..
Before I go any further though,
You need to be warned Steins;Gate is a rather hard story to review without revealing some details.
As the story is very event driven and heavily plot dependant,
Where characters primarily congregate to each other largely because of the main plot device, that being time travel
Where the story has a relatively linear trajectory that's thrust forward by important events,
Which takes form as small clues and developments,
As they're sprinkled across the resolution of each microcosm of an episode,
Such as their search for the IBN 5100.
Where seemingly unrelated tasks & small threads within the story
Both reveal more about and comfortably introduce new characters
In addition to taking another step and revealing more clues in the labs effort
To investigate more about the time-travel phenomena
My fork?
As with Kurisu's scientific expertise as prodigal scientist from the US,
& with Daru's technological expertise when machines or computers are involved,
It's with this circle of friends and working relationship that they're actually able to problem-solve and work their way towards
Learning more about the time travel phenomenona.
Though it's still a relatively casual arrangement with Okabe's mad
Antics alongside Kurisu's outraged tsundere routine,
Complemented by Mayuri's optimism and moe personality,
Alongside Dara's perversions as an Otaku & computer nerd.
Where Mayuri is more sympathetic and Daru on the other hand offers his advice as Okabe's pal
It's a very nice balance and steady flow between revealing character
And creating a sense of fun and committee in the labs
Day-to-day skits in their common goal & curiosity and finding more about the time-travel phenomena
& just hanging out.
As a time spent in between the problem-solving and,
Technological aspects of the series is fun and comedic, where the distance between
Characters such as Okabe & Kurisu grows smaller with each passing day and development.
It's that ever present attitude..
You bring it out of me !!
What do you want?
Where are you?
Why would you want to know?
No reason..
In route to Yanabayashi shrine if you're so disinterested..
Oh "hang up".. very classy..
Harassment!!
Though of course with each casual step towards that goal the atmosphere & gravity situation becomes much more disquiet,
With the intuitive part of the story slowly raising more red flags that Okabe continues to ignore until it's far too late..
As you'll find that the world of Steins;Gate is rather small & that the suspects are much more interconnected
To the lab's small circle than you actually might think..
Which well somewhat of a crutch to the story in how predictable it may be, it turn the progression of the story is quite strong.
Being that Steins;Gate is a very progressive story and that's what it does best.
Where instead of completely shifting the blame to a boogeyman plot device,
What's more interesting is how interconnected
Every character is where the level of intimacy is shortened and as a by-product you're able to relate,
Even if you don't necessarily agree..
Though due to how small the scope of the story and its circle of characters is, while the progression of the story is quite strong,
It definitely doesn't have the element of surprise either.
Which is one of the reasons why the show isn't my first pick when I want to watch something
As since I've already seen already, due to the very linear and dense overarching narrative and overt nature of its delivery
It becomes a little bit too predictable.
As all the characters within Steins;Gate are simplistic overall ranging from my Mayuri, Itaru or even Akiha Rumiho,
Where I find that Suzuha Amane & Kiryu Moeka
Are especially overly convenient plot servicing characters,
Where Moeka is just way too simplistic & unconvincing of a character within Steins;Gate..
Speaking of which I think Mayuri is somewhat of a weak character,
With very little contribution from story as a whole.
The only thing that Mayuri offfers generally is pretty casual dialogue,
Which often comes in the form of some needed comedic relief from some of Steins;Gate's more intense subject matter.
This is problematic being that for someone with an awful amount of screen time
She certainly doesn't show an equal amount of complexity or diversity as a character.
Where Mayuri only becomes a critical component to the plot like other future Gadget Lab members,
When her life becomes at risk.
Which I find that the "destined loop" story gimmick is awfully unconvincing,
In that she for the most part only serves as a Moe blob sidekick for both Kurisu & Okabe to perhaps accompany
Or perhaps protect and it isn't nearly as entertaining as it should be..
While Mayuri is not exactly a "quote" bad character as I do find quite a few of her moments as a character within the story
Quite moving like say when she's arguing with Okabe or perhaps when she's sad about something
interestingly enough..
Okarin, are you sending a D-mail?
If you do that, all of this will disappear!
I know that...
All the time we remember spending with Suzu will have never have happened!
I know that!!
So please, change the future.
Okarin!!
As I also admit how she did nonetheless kept me entertained,
As her lines can be awfully funny and cute at that..
When you're on a chicken bender, grab a box of chicken tenders
Bawk, bawk, bawk!!
Hey I'm back..
In my opinion her relationship with Okabe as a childhood friend
Should really have been depicted with much more depth and detail,
Before raising the stakes of the story prematurely.
Where they seemingly skimmed over the events of the past concerning Mayuri's loss of her grandma,
As Okabe's Involvement with Mayuri
In this period should have been explored in much more detail.
Pick your given character, in that asides from Okabe or Kurisu
You'll find that every other character is often too simplistic,
Only having a singular conflict or particular ambition within their lives and once those issues are resolved
They really have no other purpose within the story other than to be characters who are just of service to the overarching narrative out of convenience.
Being relegated to a supporting character with little function or purpose,
To simply provides small talk to fill in some odd minutes for each episode
Along with being a very linear and heavily plot and event-driven story
I realized that Steins;Gate's function as a story is too centric on the relationship between
Okabe and Kurisu, in that if you remove those two characters you have an awfully weak story as a whole
Since almost every other character has little depth to speak of terms of their backstory
Or ambitions as a person..
With the time travel in all I really do think that there's a lot of missed potential regarding the
Possibilities to create far better threads and character moments within the story,
As I relate this concept to myself
I personally feel that many people who committed terrible mistakes with their lives which would include me
Would want so badly to go back in time to change the events of the past
A primary example of missed potential would be Akiha Rumiho's story, where I feel that both original creators
Nitro+ and 5pb & the directing staff
Including Hamasaki Hiroshi and Sato Takuya could have put far more of an emphasis on her story
To which it could have been far more sad and touching
Instead, I don't feel that the time spent on her was effective as it could have been,
Nor do I think that she had enough
Screen time in the first place..
I think she's a perfect example of a character who'd use time travel to resolve far more personal and relatable issues,
It shows us that behind her role-playing and fun upbeat personality,
There's a very tangibly sweet and affectionate girl behind it.
As she's one of the few characters within Steins;Gate to have this kind of depth
Alongside others such as Mr. Braun, & perhaps Suzuha
It wasn't his fault
But I was so upset.
I thought he loved his job more than me, you know,
I was so mad I told him I wished he was dead!
And, when he heard how upset I was he caught an early flight back..
And I never saw him again..
In my eyes, she could have been a great main character as I have similar feelings about
Okabe & Mayuri, where you're telling me that asides from his mistakes when time-traveling
He has nothing important or significant in his life that has actually happened
He personally wants to amend or change? A sadly missed opportunity.
Also, what about Mayuri?
And really I think that speaks volumes of the lack of both character development and complexity Stein's;Gate actually has..
You can run away..
You can run away, but that'll just make it worse!
Shut up!
No matter how many times you time leap,
You can't get past the 1% barrier!
We won't know until we try!
It's these touchy and confrontational moments that creates this wonderful
Friction creating a byproduct of great comedy and drama that nicely complements the story,
In giving it more gravity to its more intense subject matter
Oddly enough despite the tension between the two & Kurisu's generally overt personality,
She almost acts as his limiter and helps Okabe keep himself sane in his neurotic
Experience of being crushed over and over again,
In the confusing loop time travel not being able to save a certain someone..
Where I feel that the transition between Kurisu being confrontational & un-agreeable,
To freindly but in denial,
To then opening her heart and finally blossoming,
Is something that always gets me when done right in an anime.
It's just too bad that the original creators 5pb and Nitro+, in addition to White Fox's directing
& screenplay staff didn't put the same amount love into other characters,
And their correspondent relationships as they did with Kurisu & Okabe
As with the use of time travel Okabe endlessly loops back to the past to prevent the deaths of Future Gadget lab members
Where later on the story we learn of Okabe's unique ability to retain his memories from multiple world lines,
While other characters simply can't
Forgetting anything that may or may have not transpired in another world line
So when he does travel back in time, Okabe is always disrupting the status quo of the given situation
He's in, alerting characters such as Mayuri as well as Kurisu.
Oftentimes confusing & mistaking world lines and memories for the current world line he's actually in.
Despite not having Okabe's special ability, Kurisu is always at his side,
Loaning a hand and inspiring the hope that he needs..
Right?
Though the tricky part about this is that Okabe is the only one
Who can actually remember these developments within their relationship
As he's the only one who is capable of remembering his time in different world lines,
As he leaps back and forth through time
Which is awfully touching and at the same time very sad.
Though in turn it's a very unique opportunity,
Expressing his isolation from others in how alienating his neurotic montage,
Of heavily impactful experiences are, good or bad have now never have happened..
Where's Mayuri?
Mayuri-chan already left, earlier..
I know..
I also know she came to invite you to the party,
That she's visiting her cosplayer friend on her way back to the lab...!
And I also know, that she's looking forward to the party!
All of It!!
It's a surreal tearing of his fabric of reality as the sense of loss is quite poignant.
It's heavily ironic because his here or there-say are about every random rant
In pontificating his nutty conspiracies about the
Organization and their schemes and agents, which couldn't possibly be true, disturbingly comes to fruition..
Mayuri..
Mayuri!!
So.. Uh..
When we jump back to the prior world line am I gonna lose my memories of this one?
I Don't know.. You said earlier you have memories of things from both sides of the change right?
So you'll probably keep them.
That's a relief..
Don't take this weird, but this whole thing between us... I want to keep hold of it..
I'm sure you will..
It's these relationships that are able to transcend world lines,
Space, distance & time is what really sold this anime to me
Where to a degree all the characters seem to have a vague set of
Distortions of events that have may have transpired in other world lines.
A lot of it creates these misunderstandings
Between Okabe and others in which that they grow to trust Okabe,
As he's seemingly privy to knowledge that characters have otherwise yet to tell him about that end up being true.
Whether it's entirely personal or embarrassing, this of course makes for some interesting drama.
Though the authors of steins gate as well as the directing staff do a decent job in
constructing a mystery like narrative,
While I do feel that they did a decent job of knowing when to omit essential details and when
To include them, I still feel that some revelations within the story and the plot were seemingly predictable
And somewhat obvious. Though all in all I still do feel that the story has indeed
Largely made up for that fact with great thrills and emotional
Suspense, as well as a good beginning middle & end..
Being that there's such a huge payoff in how climatic the story's firm progression is and how it left on such a high note.
It's a very well nit story in Okabe's tired pursuit of a chimera, with family & romantic love,
In that along side the subliminal composition of urgency & mundane friendship,
It's just as much of a story about creating memories that you'd cherish,
As it is about protecting & losing them...
Someday in the future, we will look back
To see you smiling, always here..
Have you considered given the wisdom between these pages a try?
That's a hentai game strategy guide jackass!!
So!?
