- It was a cool opportunity to do a Spider-Man movie
and animate it,
but we've seen a lot of Spider-Man movies, like you said,
but we said we wold do it if it was a Miles Morales story
because that felt like something you've never seen before.
- Let's kill the energy in the room, guys.
- Let's take it down.
Everybody calm down.
- Everybody calm down.
It's just a movie.
- It's just a movie called Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse.
Congratulations on this one, guys.
I got a chance to see the first 35-ish minutes.
It's amazing.
The fans are gonna be so psyched to see this.
Talk to me first off,
there've been a bunch of great
Spider-Man films done already, for you,
what was the unexplored territory?
What did you guys wanna see in this film
that you'd never seen in a Spider-Man film before?
- It think the fact that there had been so many
was the opportunity for us,
because at this point
you sort of have to do something different
and we figured they seem to really want us to do it badly
so we thought we could trick them into doing want we wanted.
- If you really want us that badly,
can we go crazy with this?
- We seem to have leverage
and it would be really dumb not to use it.
- So that was kinda it.
- For you gentlemen,
have either of you ever been up for a superhero role before?
Is this your first go round on the superhero?
- Yes. - This is my first job.
Yes.
- This is just the beginning for this man right here.
- Exactly, exactly.
You, of course, play Miles Morales.
We've talked before,
I know this is a part that is close to your heart.
Give me a sense of sort of why this felt like
the right role for you,
why you felt destined for this you think.
- I just thought it was a really cool character.
When I first found out about Miles Morales,
you know, being a kid and seeing that,
and seeing the black Latino Spider-Man,
I'm like, yo, of course I wanna be that.
One day somebody's gonna make a movie
with this character and I wanna play that.
And I wrote it down and it happened.
What does that feel, what is that like?
It's a blessing, that's the only way to put it.
I just try to take it advantage of it,
try to do the very best I can.
And I'm working with some amazing people.
You saw the first 35 minutes, and it's not even all the way,
they didn't even put the bells and whistles
on it yet really.
And these guys, we know they're working,
how amazing they are.
I'm a part of that legacy now too
so I can brag about that.
I just fell like, you know,
yeah, it's a blessing.
It's just the first step.
- You alluded to something,
having seen the first 35,
it's even just about your particular character
it's also the diversity everywhere in this film.
It's the Brooklyn of today,
that we recognize as today,
and that has, I think, a real power for audiences today.
I mean, we're talking about all the icons,
there's talk that Warner Bros. might want Michael B. Jordan
to play Superman all that kind of stuff.
That stuff has legitimate, long lasting power.
Don't we think?
In terms of representation for the kids today
watching Miles Morales on the big screen.
- I will say. - Yes, please.
- Me, personally, I feel like it's cool
that we're becoming open to different takes on characters.
I don't think everything should be changed though.
I feel like we still need some original content
and whatnot.
I'll just put that out there.
But I'm very thank--
- There's a lot of old, white actors crying and going,
yes, Shameik! (laughs)
(all laughing)
Oh Shameik!
A bunch of character actors--
- It's totally true though.
We shouldn't overkill it,
but yeah, I'm very excited that I'm playing Miles Morales.
(laughs)
- But I will say that what's really cool about the movie
is that the idea that there's a lot of different
Spider people, and not even people,
so everybody can sort of find someone
they can look on the screen and be like,
I feel like I can relate to that person,
especially whether you're a talking pig,
or a robot, you know what I mean?
The idea that anybody can be a hero
I think is really powerful.
- It should just feel normal.
- Right. - Right?
And that's the thing that was kinda neat
about making this movie
and setting out to make a Miles Morales story.
And then by the time we were testing the movie
the audience, the core audience of this movie,
sort of, they were like, yeah, of course.
- Right.
- Yeah, totally. - Yeah.
- The audience is always kind of--
- That's cool.
- Yeah, what else you got?
That's not enough for us,
and that was such a wonderful surprise.
And this character,
I think one of the reasons Spider-Man is enduring,
is any kid can imagine themselves behind that mask.
And I remember walking down Olvera Street in L.A.,
which is a like a Latino market,
and you saw there was a bunch of Mexican wrestling masks
and then there was a lot of Spider-Man masks.
And I'm like, what is this about?
And it's because anybody can I imagine themselves
behind that face.
And to me that was one of the major points
of inspiration for the movie.
- Jake, you get to play Peter Parker,
and that's the good side,
you get to play Peter Parker's Spider-Man.
- Yes.
- [Josh] Having seen a significant
portion of the footage though,
you also are playing an out of shape.
- This is still the good side, continue.
- [Josh] Okay. (all laughing)
- I'm waiting for the turn, I haven't heard it, go on.
- Okay, good, that's my question I guess.
So, you weren't taken about, oh good,
I get to be a super hero
but why are you having me be the out shape,
down on his luck?
- You know, I'm 40 years old, I know who I am.
(all laughing)
And that's a gift. - Okay.
- Honest, I was really honored.
You know, this one started,
I got an email from Phil two and a half years ago,
and I was really, even apart from Spider-Man,
I was excited to work with these guys.
So, I knew that we were doing an interview before,
if you're gonna tackle something like Spider-Man,
Peter Parker, Miles Morales,
and you don't have the right creatives behind it,
it's really scary.
'Cause if you're coming to Comic Con with a bad movie,
and as an actor where you're just doing the voice,
you get blamed.
But it's really not us doing it.
So I was really happy,
where I'm like, oh, I know it's gonna be really good,
and innovative, and thoughtful.
And it has been.
It's been two and a half years playing this character
and it's been great and I love him.
- So, clarify for me in this age where we're obsessed
with cinematic universes and what's what.
So, Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire,
are they in this movie?
- They are all in their own universes.
There's a huge universe out there,
there's a whole Spider-Verse, don't ya know?
(all laughing)
- Don't you know works with the accent
we were working out.
(all laughing)
- Could I hear their voices potentially in this movie?
- December 14th.
- There you go. (all laughing)
- Could I see Venom or Venom's notorious tongue
in this movie?
- Is this is like a spoiler trick?
Am I gonna get ya?
- No, I'm just curious.
- I'm trying to think of where we could
still put Venom's tongue.
Just the tongue.
- Just the tongue.
Sometimes you only need the tongue.
- Like, if it just kinda like a little worm,
just kinda works its way.
- Is that one of your sayings these days?
- The film is supposed to be appropriate for everyone.
- As I was saying it I wanted to take it back in.
- I saw your eyes dial.
- Here's a hot button question, I feel,
for Spider-Man aficionados,
why the hyphen in Spider-Man?
There are virtually no other super,
Iron Man, Superman, it's all one,
either one word or two words, yet there's a hyphen.
- Separated out.
- What's going on?
- Like First Man, which I assume is a superhero movie.
I haven't seen it yet. - We should talk.
(all laughing) - It is.
It's not?
- No.
I was really disappointed but I love you, man, I will say.
(all laughing)
- Where do you come down on this?
- This kid had the worst power.
(all laughing)
- Power of love.
- Do you feel like the hyphen gives him something
a little special, something a little extra?
- It's like a little, tiny web.
- Oh yeah!
It represents the way the way that we're all connected.
- Exactly. - Look at that.
That's impressive.
- Look at that, totally had that.
- In print that'll read a lot better.
(all laughing)
- Have any of you played the new Spider-Man game
that everybody seems to be obsessed with right now?
- I did.
By the way,
I was definitely told to put Spider-Man ad or whatnot
when I said it,
or told the world that I played this game.
But Sony gave me the game before it came out
and a Playstation.
- It has its perks.
- Have you played as Miles?
- Yes, actually, I did. (all laughing)
I was a little jealous that it was someone else.
- Who's this guy?
- You can turn the volume down.
- Narrate your own story.
- I would say it right after,
whatever he said I would say it after.
(all laughing)
- Were all the Spider-Men, women, pigs,
ever in the same room in this one?
Have you guys spent more time together doing press
than on the making this film?
- Kind of.
I mean, we did read together a few times.
I was fortunate enough to read with Shameik
and I read with Catherine Ham
but that was it for me.
- [Josh] Nice.
- Yeah, the only other Spider-Person I was read
with was Jake here.
- So there was never a Nic Cage in the room with all--
- No one's ever met Mulaney. (all laughing)
- Because he's passed on every one of them.
We're like, oh, we're all here.
And he's like, I pass.
I won't do it.
- I won't do it.
I do it alone.
- That's his process. - He has rules.
- It's Mulaney alone or no one.
- That's it.
- He's great, so.
- It's the rider, you gotta read the rider.
- Was Nic Cage an easy guy to pin down for this?
He's obviously a big comics fan.
- I just didn't think he would say yes.
But then he's said yes to some really cool stuff,
so you figure we've got a shot.
And I think he thought that the idea was far out.
He's really just hysterical.
- He's really very, very good in it.
- Well, that's the exciting thing
having seen all this footage
you guys are showing at New York Comic Con,
is it feels like it's the tip of the iceberg.
It's really the first act. - Yeah.
- Plus of the film
and we haven't even seen most of the other
Spider incarnations.
- Actually the film is very short.
- It's a 42 minute film. (all laughing)
- You will be disappointed! (laughs)
- It's all we could afford.
- We made a blunder! (all laughing)
- It's true.
- What can you tease in terms of what's to come after
that first act in terms of opening up the world?
What are you excited for fans to see
beyond what we're seeing here at New York Comic Con?
- Well, I think a lot of the most exciting action
and the most far out visuals come as the movie progresses.
It starts out fairly like a normal movie
and it gets crazier and crazier and crazier as it goes on.
And so, I'm really excited to see how an audience
reacts to the crazy places this thing is going,
because the amount of action that's in it
and the amount of absurd visuals
are like nothing I've ever seen before.
- You guys stop it at the perfect spot, by the way.
I mean like, it's really just like, you like.
- The audience is gonna scream and be like, come on.
- (laughs) Like it was very, yeah, you guys are doing it.
Of course.
- Is there another comic book character
off the top of your head
that feels like warrants this kind of a treatment,
that could benefit from an animated treatments of this type
that you'd like to see on the big screen?
- I'm trying to figure out how to tease
future films.
- Oh yeah.
- No, I think only Spider-Man. (all laughing)
- Kill your competitors.
- That's it.
I think any other character it just would be,
it'd be weird, right?
- Don't you guys agree?
- It'd be gross. (all laughing)
Repellent.
- How do you top this, guys?
- Yeah, exactly.
- Do you have any interest at this point
in a live action comic book film?
Obviously, there was the Flash was talked about
at one point.
Is that something that you would be interested in doing?
- I mean, who knows.
- Continue the series. (laughs)
- Exactly.
- You're like, no, don't take them off to another project,
continue this one.
- I mean, we like to try to mix things up
and keep doing different stuff all the time.
And this is one of the most
craziest things that we've ever done
and I'm really proud of it.
- It looks amazing, man.
Thank you guys all for stopping by.
Let's go in there and show some footage, okay?
- Sounds great.
- Let's do it.
Thanks guys.
