For the first time in nearly 50 years a Chicago police officer was convicted of murder in

an on-duty shooting.

This month, a jury convicted the officer, Jason Van Dyke, for shooting and killing a

black teenager in 2014.

The officer, Jason Van Dyke, shot the boy 16 times, but he wasn't even charged with

a crime until the dash cam video of the incident was released nearly a year later, after a

Freedom of Information Act was requested.

Joining me to talk about this Mollye Barrows, legal journalist for the Trial Lawyer Magazine.

Mollye, these are the types of stories you covered as an anchor, news anchor, for a lot

of years before you started doing legal reporting.

Tell us about this case.

It just seems to be a classic kind of case, isn't it?

It is.

And, it is classic.

Especially, it did bring up some memories of other cases that I'd covered before.

In fact, a cop that'd been caught doing something he shouldn't done.

He ended up destroying his video, back when they used tapes, on a grill.

When I read about this case, it certainly didn't surprise me, and I don't think it surprised

a lot of people in the black community, in the Chicago community as well.

What went down is, in October 2014, 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, there'd been a call that

a man armed with a knife was breaking into vehicles.

The police were responding.

Among them was Jason Van Dyke.

He claims that when they arrived there that Laquan McDonald refused to drop the knife,

and that he was walking towards him and he feared for his safety, so he shot 16 times.

What was the explanation for shooting this young man 16 times?

During the trial, why did he shoot somebody 16 times?

What happened?

There-

Fear for his life.

Why do any of them do it?

They always say the same thing, that it was my police training, that I shoot to kill.

But, 16 times is excessive.

That's why, once this video was actually released, it led to protest, because you see this officer

shooting this kid over, and over, and over.

Overkill to a certain extent.

What's so interesting is that he wasn't even charged until the day that the dash cam video

was released.

The court ordered it to be released.

Well, Freedom of Information Act is why it was released, right?

Because of that, and it was a year later.

Yeah, and it actually led to changes within the Chicago Police Department as well.

They now release dash cam video within 60 days of an incident, and they give all patrol

officers body cameras and tasers as well.

This officer, by the way, had a choice.

They'd called for a backup officer who carried a taser, and he chose not to wait.

Well, let me tell you, as you know, I was a prosecutor before I started doing this.

As a prosecutor, you had the opportunity to talk to real police officers.

They had everything you would want in a police officer.

They had that quality.

They would often talk about police officers like this.

It's funny when you hear them talk about it.

They know.

The typical conversation was, well, this is a kid in high school who sat on the bench

on the football team, saw very little action, comes out, he graduates, doesn't know what

to do, goes a couple years to a junior college, maybe one year, and then goes looking for

a job on the police department.

Most of the time, it's because he knows somebody that he's brought in.

The real police officer, the people who really deserve to be there, and there's a lot of

them, they don't like these guys either, because it really causes them such harm.

It puts them at risk.

You hear story after story about police officer being shot in their cars.

They're sitting there.

What bothers me about this story, in addition, he was charged with first degree murder, and

the jury came back with a second degree.

How?

I know.

All the trials that I've covered in similar situations, and actually hearings involving

officer involved shootings, they always end up coming back to what this jury decided,

which is so interesting.

The judge gave them a choice.

He said, "You can find him guilty on first degree murder, but there needs to be a mitigating

factor, or if you find that the shooting was unjustified, but that Van Dyke acted reasonably,

then you can find him guilty of second degree murder."

I'm not even surprised that they found him guilty of second degree murder, because I

think the average person doesn't know what it's like to walk in an officer's shoes.

When they hear him say, "So much is going on.

It's night time-

I had to shoot him 16 times.

I had to shoot him.

I felt like my life was in danger."

Mollye, thanks.

It's another story that ... It's right down your alley, isn't it?

It is.

These are the kinds of stories you've been covering for a long time as a news anchor.

Charleston (NC), Jewel of the South! - Duration: 11:27.

On route to Charleston, South Carolina

American highways are great! All of them are huge, with 5 or 6 lanes.

Everybody respects the speed limit, but I have to admit that I don't really do it…

A police car appeared out of nowhere, he pulled us over… he was a giant blond guy with biceps like Popeye …

Blond? But he was bald!

Shut up, I'm angry!

We did what we recommend to do when you are pulled over by the Southern police…

stay quiet and don't move your hands, you know that here they are trigger-happy…

We have to say he was nice. He let us go on with just a warning, he didn't ticket us.

Yes, I overtook an unmarked police car driving at 130 kms/h (81 miles/h),

so 11 miles above the speed limit… so, I was a bit disrespectful…

Yes, pulling you over was the least that he could do…

Hello fellow travelers!

We are in Charleston, one of the most important cities in South Carolina.

It's famous because the American Civil War started here, because of its sad history of slavery

and its beautiful architecture!

Behind us is the Dock St. Theatre. We have the pleasure of showing you the first theatre in the USA.

Here they staged the first opera in the US, with the performance of "Flora".

Charleston is a pretty city but it has a terrible past.

It was the nerve center of the slave trade in America.

All the slave boats that came from Nigeria or Ivory Coast, took slaves here to be auctioned.

Don't believe all you see in the movies, that they put a table in the middle of the street

and they auctioned them, no.

The slave business was more "professional"

What you see behind us is the Old Slave Market, one of the most important of this area.

Nowadays it is a very interesting museum about slavery.

Since we weren't allowed to film inside, tel us: what do you think about the museum?

It's worth visiting to see how harsh it was, how families were separated,

and how this was a business based on human exploitation.

It's good that afro-american families can currently know where they came from

and how their ancestors had to suffer to survive.

And, it wasn't just Africans who were enslaved in the US.

There was a huge commerce of Scottish and Irish people who, in order to pay their ticket to come here,

had to stay for a lot of years working without a salary and living in inhumane conditions.

Behind us is the Historic City Market.

African women who came here, made a kind of hamper (Gullah sweet grass) and the tradition continues.

These baskets make very cool gift for your family.

Behind me is Rainbow Row.

It's a street where every house is painted a different color.

Ok, you know that I'm color-blind, but they are beautiful anyway!

You have to know there is a free trolley that will take you all over Charleston.

There are also horse drawn carriages, but we don't like them.

We have seen some banners on the houses complaining about the bad treatment they give the horses,

so, better to avoid that option.

Now we are at Waterfront Park.

This fountain is, maybe, the most picturesque place of the city.

The story of the funny relationship between Charleston and the pineapple

comes from the 18th and 19th century.

When sailors came home from their trips around the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean,

they would bring home loads of tropical fruit, among them, pineapples.

The sailors' wives, as a sign of happiness at their husbands' safe return,

would put pineapples at the entrances of their homes.

Now the pineapple is the symbol of the city!

If you have time, we recommend that you take a ferry to Patriots Point:

It is a beautiful Civil War fort, and you can also see the Yorktown, an aircraft carrier:

It is now a naval museum, it's very interesting!

This path close to the sea is super-nice, not only because of the breeze,

but the houses you are going to see. They are awesome!

How cool!

American people. If some of you have some money in the bank,

I'll tell you that you should buy one of the houses along Battery and King St and set up a restaurant, terrace-bar…

There is not a place to have a drink for people like us,

who like to enjoy walking the city but also want to sit down and grab a beer…

I'm terribly thirsty, my feet are hurting and I'm starting to get angry!

At last we are going to have lunch! This place looks good… just the music is cool!

We are going to eat two typical Southern dishes.

Jose's is called "Jambalaya". It's rice with seafood, a mix between the African and French cuisine.

Mine is called "Shrimp and grits". Grits is a kind of semolina.

It has a spicy sauce and bacon. Yummy…

We are in one of the least visited areas of Charleston, but we wanted to come here because it is a bit morbid…

The Old City Jail.

You can visit it at midnight. They say you'll be scare senseless.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the owners of this jail (btw, there are a lot of private jails in the US),

poisoned all the prisoners.

They say that at night you can hear moans and cries…

so if you like gloomy and gore, the midnight visit is a must!

We are at the Collage of Charleston. It's the oldest municipal college in America, founded in 1770.

The place that we are going to show you now is called Liberty Square, but in the old times,

it was called Gadsden's Wharf.

It was the port where the boats from Africa docked.

45% of the slaves who came to America stopped here, in this port.

We are at the entrance of the ferry-boat that you have to take if you want to visit Fort Sumter.

This fort is very important for the American History. This is where the Civil War started.

When Lincoln was elected President, btw, he was Republican and an abolitionist,

the states of the South decided to separate. The first state that left the Union was South Carolina.

The garrison in Fort Sumter remained loyal to the Union and decided to lock themselves in the fort.

When the diplomatic channels exhausted, the Confederate troops bombed the fort.

There weren't any casualties but that fact was the trigger, or the "excuse", for the Union Army.

They head south to help their troops in Fort Sumter and, the Civil War commenced.

Important fact! If you want to take the ferry you have to come before 5pm.

We have visited so many places that it was impossible to come earlier.

But, at least we told you the history of this place.

By the way, the famous dance "the Charleston" came from here, hence the name.

Historians believe it came from a folk dance that African people did around the ports.

Do you remember how it was done?

We go on tasting Southern food.

Now, taking advantage of the fact that we are in a city with a harbor, we will try its seafood.

We want to disabuse youu of the idea that it's not possible to eat well in the US.

If you are in the South, you are going to enjoy a lot with its dishes!

With the noise of the cicadas at dusk, another of Charleston's charms,

we wishy you "good bye"

from a beautiful quarter that we just discovered. Wow, what awesome houses!

Really, we tried to find a place without the noisy cicadas, but it was impossible.

They're everywhere.

If you liked the video, click "like", so that we know you liked it…

Please, keep an eye on our Youtube channel because we are going to post more videos

about our roadtrip through the American Deep South.

Next we're going to Alabama!

A piece of advice: you have to visit both Charleston and Savannah. They are very close and you need to visit both.

As we had only two days, our visit was focused on the city centers, but if you had more time,

you could enjoy islands, beaches, forts and plantations. It's worth it to devote at least four days.

See you soon in a new trip of Viajando a Nuestro Aire!

Bye!

Bahia Honda State Park (Calusa beach and Bahia Honda Rail Bridge), Big Pine Key, Florida (USA) - Duration: 4:10.

Bahia Honda is one of the many islands of the Florida Keys archipelago, a chain of coral islands and reefs in the southeastern United States.

U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) crosses the key at approximately mile markers 36-38.5, between Ohio Key and Spanish Harbor Key 12 miles (19 km) west of Marathon, close to the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge.

The island is virtually uninhabited, being home to the 524-acre (2.12 km2) Bahia Honda State Park. Founded in 1961, the park occupies most of the island.

The channel at the island's west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys.

The park is 212 hectares and offers 4 km of beautiful sandy beaches, including Calusa Beach on the Gulf of Mexico and Sandspur Beach on the Atlantic Ocean.

With these two beaches, Bahia Honda State Park offers the most beautiful beaches in the entire Florida Keys.

The beach or rather the view here is actually the highlight of the Bahia Honda State Park.

In the shade of the large palm trees you enjoy the view of the beautiful white sand beach, the old railway bridge of the Flagler Oversea Railroad, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Bahia Honda Bridge of the Oversea Highway.

The Overseas Railroad (also known as Florida Overseas Railroad, the Overseas Extension, and Flagler's Folly) was an extension of the Florida East Coast Railway to Key West, a city located 128 miles (204.8 km) beyond the end of the Florida peninsula.

Work on the line started in 1905 and it operated from 1912 to 1935, when it was partially destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane.

In Bahia Honda State Park there are also changing facilities and sanitary facilities at Calusa Beach.

The usual barbecue facilities for the USA are available as well.
