in this episode of throttle out we take you out on the trail to demonstrate some
recovery here and some techniques on how to yourself and how to sticky situations
when you're wheeling so in this video we're gonna be talking all about
recovery gear and recovery techniques there are a bunch of different styles of
wheeling you can just be on some fire trails you can do some hardcore rock
crawling or you could like to play out in the mud but regardless of how you
wheel chances are if you do it long enough eventually you're going to get
stuck and when you do it can either ruin your day
or not be a big deal if you're prepared for it so a couple of things that you
can do to make sure you're prepared know some techniques make sure you have some
gear and always wheel with a buddy it's safer and it's always a lot more fun
when you have a friend around as well so we're gonna go over today is some of
that recovery gear that you should have on hand and we're also going to go over
some techniques to make sure you know how to use that gear before we get into
this video make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel that way you can
check out some detailed videos on all the different products we're gonna talk
about today as well as some of the best jeep content
out there so let's get into that first piece recovery gear so we are gonna talk
about a couple different pieces of recovery gear today but the first thing
is just a regular recovery kit there are a lot of varieties of these this is
rugged ridges it's a pretty complete kit it's one that I like but you can go with
any brand as long as it has the major components that were going to talk about
so the first thing that you're gonna find in here is a recovery strap this is
a rope style a lot of the other ones are just going to be a nylon strap style
this style doesn't really matter as long as it's rated for a good pulling
capacity the difference between a toe strap and a recovery strap is actually
pretty significant a toe strap is not going to stretch it all and that's for
towing a snatch strap or a recovery strap which this is actually is designed
to stretch so that the recovery vehicle can get a little bit of momentum going
this will stretch and then use all of that force to jerk the stuck vehicle
unstuck so make sure you have the proper piece of equipment you want a recovery
strap and not a toe strap for recoveries on the trail also in here you're going
to have some version of Dearing's now you're used to seeing some traditional
steel d-rings they come in three quarter or maybe a little bit bigger a little
bit smaller this is a soft Deering this is something that's a little bit new
on the market these are designed to be a little bit safer also in this kit you're
going to have a pair of gloves this is just one of those things that everybody
should have in their Jeep if you're handling a synthetic winch line a steel
winch line no matter what it is gloves always a good idea keep your
hands from getting all cut up over here you're going to have a winch flag if you
have a synthetic line you don't have to worry about it quite as much but
definitely if you have a steel line use a winch flag this drapes over the winch
line about halfway between the two vehicles you put some weight in it and
if the line does snap under load instead of it flying and hitting somebody and
causing injury or damage or death possibly this is just going to take that
line and have it fall harmlessly to the ground so this is something that a lot
of people forget or maybe don't even have this is very important if you don't
have one of these use anything use a sweatshirt I've used a cooler use
anything on that winch line to make sure that your winching safely the other
thing that you're gonna have in your recovery gear is a tree saver and what
this is is essentially just a short toe straps now if you just wrap your winch
line around a tree and hook it to itself it can strip all the bark off that tree
and kill the tree which is not something you want to do so this is going to be
something that you can wrap around the tree connect it together at this end
with a d-ring and then hook your winch on to that that way this is going to be
nice and gentle in the tree trunk you can use the tree for recovery but also
make sure it's going to stay alive so it's there for other people to use in
the future and the last piece that you're gonna have in this recovery bag
is going to be a snatch block and this is essentially a very very strong pulley
and this is used so that you can winch around the corner' winch at a ninety
degree angle if you have a couple of these in your bag you can actually winch
yourself backward if you need to in one of those really off-the-wall strange
recovery situations so these are really handy to have so what we're gonna do is
first demo that recovery strap we're going to get on the trail get ourselves
into a situation where you might need one and show you exactly how to use it
so the first thing we're going to demo from that recovery kit is the recovery
strap that we talked about and in a lot of these demonstrations we're not going
to get completely stuck we're just gonna get into a spot where we're gonna be
able to show you how to use some of this gear this is one of those situations
where I would need my recovery strap so what I'm actually gonna do is grab the
strap out of the back and do the little dance that a lot of you will be familiar
with trying to get it from the driver seat to the front bumper to attach it to
a d-ring without getting wet well that was nice
and uneventful how we like it stay dry so just have to disconnect the
d-ring here making sure not to drop the pin into the water we've one end of our
strap through the d-ring back through the bumper again and then make sure it's
not tangled up so when I throw it to Matt it'll make it there what Matt's
gonna do is attach it to his back bumper using his d-ring when you're using a
recovery strap you actually want to be able to take advantage of the stretch of
the strap in this situation Matt is going to get a little bit of speed up
I'm already gonna be in Drive ready for the tension on the line to come once it
does and the tension starts me moving then I can get into the throttle and get
out of my stuck situation so the recovery strap we just talked about is
great if you're stuck in a situation where you can get a friend in front of
you and you have some room to move around when you're in a tougher spot a
winch is going to be great for recoveries this is the spot where we got
ourselves about a half way up a pretty steep and rocky hill there isn't a lot
of traction on this hill we ended up sliding a little bit on something this
steep you certainly don't want to get sideways because there's a chance of a
rollover so what we ended up doing is just stopping and we're gonna pull some
winch line so when you have a winch it's not just the winch that you need you
also are going to need a bumper to go along with it I like this one because it
kind of sinks the winch down inside the bumper and there are a lot of different
types of winches as well this is a barricade 9,500 pound winch with the
synthetic line on it and that's gonna be more than enough to get us out of this
situation we're also going to be using a couple of pieces out of our rugged Ridge
recovery bag so the first thing we're gonna do is just take a little bit of
tension off the line in order to do that we have to plug in our remote control
take a little bit of tension off and take the hook off the D right now what
we can do we'll put the winch into free spool mode and that'll let us just pull
out winch line nice and easy we're gonna end up going all the way up the hill to
a tree and then we'll make our connection to the tree so a couple of
the pieces we're gonna use from our recovery bag our first that tree saver
if you reduced to wrap this directly around the tree if my arm is the tree
and hook it to itself as it tightens this line is going to pull you can strip
the bark off the tree kill the tree so then the next time you come up that hill
and get stuck this tree is not going to be here to help you we're gonna make
sure that the tree stays nice and safe so all you have to do is throw the tree
saver around nothing fancy there nice and low on the tree now I know this
isn't the biggest tree hunt here in the forest but we just need a little bit of
help because we lost some traction this guy's going to be plenty strong and we
are gonna hook down nice and low on the tree making sure that we have as much
strength as possible this is an opportunity for you to use one of your
d-rings and in this case we're going to use our soft d-ring so all you have to
do is open it up feed this through both eyelets of the tree saver and then
attach it to itself again and then you can hook the winch hook onto your softy
right now the next thing that we're gonna add even though we have a
synthetic line and it's not absolutely necessary is this winch flag because as
I said before we want to be as safe as we possibly can so we're gonna go down
to about halfway between the tree and the Jeep we're gonna put our flag
so this is something that's very very simple so a lot of people think it's not
really gonna do anything but this is a big deal this is definitely something
you're gonna want to use so there's some velcro we'll open it up put it around
the winch line velcro it shut again just so it doesn't move on us and then there
are a couple of little pockets feel what you want to do is put weight in those
pockets so just some rocks whatever you have laying around put a little weight
in there and again that's if this went flying were to snap the line isn't gonna
fly through the air and possibly injure somebody it's just gonna fall right to
the ground so this this flag is definitely something that's important is
something you want to use so now that that's setup all we really need to do is
go down grab our remote and go ahead and start winching a winch will come with a
remote like this one that has a nice long cable and that's for a good reason
and we've done everything we can to ensure that this is a nice safe winching
but if something does break you don't want to injure yourself so you want to
stay as far away as you possibly can so what we're gonna do is go ahead and
winch in we're gonna put some tension on the line then we're gonna let Matt know
that he can put the Jeep into drive take the emergency brake off let off the
brake I'll go ahead and winch up the hill so as you are the person operating
the winch if you're in a two-person setup like this Matt can't really see
anything except for the sky right now so I'm also spotting him as he's coming up
telling him which way to turn the tires so that he's not going to get more hung
up make this as smooth as possible but as I'm doing that I'm also keeping an
eye on the rigging all the way up at the tree all the way down to the winch here
make sure there aren't any weird noises nothing looks weird winching is
something that is very easy to do but it can be a little bit dangerous so just
keep an eye on things so there's no real need to winch you all the way up to your
attachment point at the base of the tree we got up the rough part of the hill
here I know that we're gonna be able to drive out of this no problem so what we
can do now is go ahead and have Matt hold the brake put the Jeep back in park
set the emergency brake again he's gonna stay in it that way I can let the
tension off the line we'll go ahead and clean up all the rigging get the line
back on the winch spool and then this is a great opportunity to use the gloves
out of your recovery bag because you're gonna have the winch line pretty much
sliding through your hand as you're feeding it back onto the spool and that
is a very easy way to get a splinter take the line in one hand the remote in
the other and just go ahead and winch you in there
the way as I'm doing this I'm working the winch line back and forth just to
kind of get it even on the spool that you want it to be spooled up under a
little bit of tension once you get to the end here you can go ahead and clip
the hook to your d-ring if that's how you store your hook and that's it a
winch is a really excellent tool when you get yourself into a situation like
this you can go directly from your Jeep to a tree and go ahead and get yourself
out of a stuck situation so now that you know how to winch from one vehicle to a
tree winching from one vehicle to another isn't all that different you're
essentially just going to hook the winch line from the non stuck vehicle to this
stuck vehicle and do the pool but there are a couple of things that you have to
consider that you might not have thought about and one of those is the fact that
that Jeep is stuck and this one isn't so as you start pulling tension on this
line this Jeep the unstuck Jeep is going to want to start moving so there are a
few things you can do to help eliminate that if you turn the steering wheel all
the way to one lock that's just gonna add a little bit of extra tension so
that the Jeep won't want to roll forward quite as easily of course this being an
automatic Jeep you're also going to want to have it in park and have the
emergency brake that kind of goes without saying another thing that you
can do is grab a rock and chalk the tire with it any wedge-shaped rock that you
can kind of kick under the tire is gonna help if you're in a situation where that
Jeep is really stuck and you just cannot keep this cheap from moving what you can
do is take any sort of tow strap tree saver whatever you have and go from the
rear bumper of this Jeep to a tree to another vehicle to anything that's going
to keep this from moving there's one other safety tip that I wanted to give
you and that is to pop the hood now does it make it a little bit more difficult
to see and to communicate yes it does but there is a d-ring down there and
there's also a metal winch hook and if this line snaps and those go flying
through the air they can come right through the windshield and injure you as
the driver or the passenger in either of those vehicles to having the hood up
helps to protect against that other than those couple of tips this is going to be
just like winching to a tree grab your winch controller and start winching in
so we already went over how you winch from one Jeep to another and that's when
you can pull in a straight line but as you can see here there's not enough room
on the trail to have another Jeep in here winching or enough room to use a
recovery strap this is about the best position we can get our second vehicle
in so if that Jeep over there doesn't have a winch all we would be able to do
is pull from this one to that one in a straight line and that pulls that Jeep
sideways so that's no good what we want to do is pull that Jeep straight to this
tree and that's where the snatch block comes in so what we're going to be able
to do is to get that set up and use it as a pulley system so that we can pull
that Jeep straight instead of having to pull it on an angle so I'm gonna pull
out our smash block here and then our soft d-ring this is where we're going to
use to attach the snatch block onto the tree saver before you can make that
attachment you have to feed the winch line through the snatch block so as you
can see the snatch blocks open up like this to make it really easy for you to
get the line in there close the snatch block and now we're ready to attach this
onto the tree saver now all you have to do is pull the rest of your winch line
out to the front of this chief heli we talked about this is a demonstration
situation this chief does have a winch we would be able to get out of it but to
show you how to use the snatch block this is how you have everything set up
from the winching Jeep to the snatch block to recovery point on the stuck
Jeep and then all you have to do is winch in and you're good to go
so even when you're in the vehicle that's being recovered you want to have
it running that way have your power brakes you have your power steering in
this situation I am going to have the Jeep in neutral I'm gonna let Matt pull
me over the obstacle that I'm stuck on and then I can go ahead and drive out on
will unhook the winching system and that's all there is to it so we
showed you a bunch of different winching techniques winching to another Jeep to a
tree even using a snatch block to winch around the corner but we have setup here
is a little bit different than all of that so this is a situation where you
could take one Jeep with one winch and three snatch blocks and actually winch
that Jeep in Reverse so you do need a little bit of equipment a couple of
different snatch blocks of course you need a winch you should have a couple of
different tree savers a lot of d-rings there's a lot of equipment necessary in
doing something like this how practical is it on the trail I don't know there
might be one situation in a thousand a million where you need to use a setup
like this cut seen this done only a couple of times on YouTube it comes up
on the forums every once in a while is something that is possible but again I
figure I'm gonna try it out and I'm gonna show you guys if it works or not
so what we have is the winch going from the bumper of course to one snatch block
in front of the Jeep to this tree in the back again another snatch block then we
come to the bumper of the Jeep and then finally we end up at a third tree so as
you're pulling you're going backward at 1/4 speed of the winch line now that's a
lot it's complicated but what does matter is if I push that button if the
Jeep starts going backward instead of forward so let's give it a shot
well we did get a little bit of backward motion from the Jeep but then it seemed
that all the friction and all the pulleys in this system took over and
things kind of bound up a little bit it was interesting when I actually winched
out after there was tension on the lines the Jeep did go backward even further
now the tree in the back has a ton of tension on it we actually had to move to
something a little bit stronger did it work
go a little bit the physics are there it should work in theory and we did get a
little bit of backward motion but you get in a situation where you need to
wink backward and you don't have another choice give this a try again the physics
are there this should work so we went through quite a few different techniques
on winching but they all required either winching from one vehicle to another or
from one vehicle to a tree but what about when there's no tree around and
that's where something like this comes in this is the Redrock 4x4 land anchor
and this is designed for that exact situation where you're in some soft
ground you don't have a tree you don't have another vehicle to winch to but you
need a winching point as the winch starts to pull this digs into the ground
eventually this becomes more stuck than the Jeep is and the Jeep starts rolling
forward then you just have to dig this out of the ground and you can keep on
moving this is gonna be a demo on how you use this land anchor but of course
we're not actually going to be stuck here so I don't suspect that everyone is
gonna have one of these in their recovery bag but if you do wheel in one
of those areas where there aren't a lot of other winch points this could be
worth its weight in gold so our Jeep is stuck on the trail back
there this is where we're gonna start setting the anchor into place so that
it's ready to dig in and kind of just get it started now what I'm gonna do is
go back to the Jeep pull the winch line out you guys already know how to do that
and get it hooked up to the landing and as far as setup that's really all you
have to do now I do find it to be a little bit easier if you help to guide
the land anchor as it first gets started pulling into the ground so you're gonna
need a friend to help you winch the actual winch in I met on the other end
Matt I'm gonna go ahead and got it you can winch in go ahead
and that's pretty much it as you can see because the Jeep isn't actually stuck I
just have a couple clicks on the ebrake there it didn't take the land anchor
very much to get sunken into the ground to overcome the weight of the vehicle
however if you were more stuck this would be a little bit more buried in the
ground as I said very easy to use it is a little bit big it's a little bit bulky
but if your wheel in those situations where there's nothing else to winch to
this is going to be a great tool for you all you have to do once you're done with
your recovery is when she out a little bit to get the tension off the line
unhook it from the d-ring and that's where this handle comes in this is on a
45 degree angle so it makes it nice and easy to pull out of the ground once you
get it out put it back in its carrying bag and you're back down the trail so
the last situation that we're in in the last piece of equipment we're going to
talk about today is a hi-lift jack or a farm-style jack
this is a Redrock 4x4 42 inch jack and this is actually the most controversial
piece of equipment that we're going to talk about as well but it can come in
handy on the trail in certain situations so the situation we find ourselves in
here is we're actually high centered on one of the factory skid plates
underneath this Jeep and well we could probably drive out of this situation
this is the type of spot where you might want to use a high lift jacket the
reason that a farm style jack is controversial these things are fairly
unstable even if you have one of the feet that they sell for it so and be
very very careful when you are using it so what we're gonna do here is jack up
the Jeep by the rock slider so we can get a rock underneath that back tire and
create some separation between the obstacle and the skid plate that we're
stuck on currently so the first thing you want to do is get it set on as flat
a ground as you possibly can of course we're offroad nothing's gonna
be flat it's not a paved surface but as flat as you can and then also you want
to keep an eye on the Jeep itself because as you raise it up it's gonna
want to roll one direction or the other pitch so you just keep an eye on that
you'll want to make sure that this is as controlled as it can be so we'll just be
able to raise this straight up to when it's actually making contact with the
slider just double check make sure that this is as vertical as it possibly can
be that we're on some nice solid ground here and then go ahead and start jacking
the Jeep up so one of the things that you're going to want to consider
when picking a spot to put the jack on the vehicle is that it's a nice strong
spot so you might see in a slider move a little bit but the rock slider is
designed to take the entire weight of the Jeep we're not gonna cause any
damage there it I could promote that anything so you also want to make sure
you stabilize the Jeep as much as you can that means chocking tire setting you
brake he's trying to keep the Jeep from rolling as much as possible so as you
can see we've created a good bit of space between the obstacle and the skid
plate that we were stuck on and we've also gotten the back tire up in the air
a little bit so I'm just gonna take a small Rock here
stick it under the back tire and that's hopefully gonna mean that as we drive
forward we're not gonna scrape on the obstacle quite as much as we otherwise
would so once you get the new rocks underneath your tire again go ahead and
readjust any trucks that you might want to use any blocking to keep the vehicle
from rolling while you're letting it down off the jack in order to switch
from going up to going down there's just a simple lever on the jack that you'll
need to push once that's done the jack will then Jack in Reverse so now that
the Jeep is back on the ground you can see we have the rock underneath the tire
that's going to give us a little bit more height the way we have the rock set
up in the rock that we chose as we drive it's actually going to raise the right
rear of the Jeep up even further creating even additional separation
there so now that we have the Jeep back on the ground we're gonna set the Jack
aside and drive off the obstacle
that's gonna do it for this video I hope you learned some techniques that you're
gonna find useful the next time you hit the trails as well as some equipment
that you should have on hand to make sure you can get yourself unstuck make
sure you comment below let me know which one of the techniques who went over
today that you think you're gonna find most useful the next time you hit the
trails and also make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel that way you can
