I have here a list of all greyhounds that were killed last year
each page has two greyhounds
all were australian greyhounds
between 260 and 280 animals were killed last year
and in normal situation, one (dog) per day is killed
which means 360 animals per year
and that is the reason why
when we (first) knew of this situation in 2011 when our colleagues
from Grey2KUSA
had a meeting with us in Macau, China
we began to investigate, and we see that really
that was the situation
and we asked the Macau government
to help us - put those guys, to sit down at a table
to have an adoption program for saving as much animals as possible
[I met you a couple of years ago in Dublin, Albano]
[and it seemed like a dream then]
[a crazy dream!]
at that time I was never capable to go inside the canidrome
not inside the kennel.... I'm not talking inside the kennel
I'm talking (about) the area where the public goes!
but now I go there I am the boss
They even use Anima T-shirt, you see
The guys that hate us
they threatened me with death in 2012
they told me "you and your family be careful"
"otherwise something will happen to you"
so now, it seems nothing happened
This was the companion of one dog called mui mui
That was killed by [cutting gesture] they cut his throat
and we bring him in to stay with us
This companion, mui mui the ashes are in my car she was killed
they cut othe head (off) and put it (outside) near Anima
Who? [Knowing gesture]
so they killed the dog and put here
I have the ashes in the back because this sunday, no monday
I will do a small ceremony with her, (and) the first dog that died inside canidrome [since Anima took over]
which is Jolly Collar is also with me in my office
I have a place where i put those dogs, that do not live with us,
a special place in the mountain, is a kind of a lake where there are the others already
and I will put all there
its a private ceremony that i do for all those animals that mark our life
it was a sweet dog, very very sweet dog
It was last year 2017 july
exactly one year before canidrome closed
they did very badly
I made a report to the police
There are cameras there, the traffice department destroyed the video
So I complained, and i put in court
so they know that they have to explain to me what happened
someone has to be punished
OK This is two papers, one, two
you see on the right side Italy, France
[perfect]
and the numbers, all the data...
If you don't undertand anything just let me know and I'll tell you
one of the older greyhounds
Massimo and I will adopt
the oldest greyhound that we have
is around 12 years (old)
is not there in your list
those that are too old or that need retirement
I take out from the list
so there are 53 in (that) situation
(group) one, which is serious problems
health problems
and (group) five which is animals that
the vets advise should be retired
to good famililies
so I don't think those animals could survive the flight
so I prefer to keep those at Anima or in the centre
so I took out number one and number five
which is 53 dogs
Only 477 are capable to be adopted
We have begun to clean the teeth
those in group two mainly need to clean their teeth
This will be paid by Yat Yeun
[that's a big job, ...sedation, ...anaesthetic]
yes, it costs a lot of money
but I am not much worried money is not my problem
These men used those animals to produce a lot of money in the past
now they have to pay the bill
[they could never pay the bill, in a sense]
yes, for sure
because they killed sixteen to eighteen thousand animals
See now, you begin to go to the highest density (population)
in the world
you see these are very tiny homes
thousands of people
is the poor area of Macau
is where is Canidrome
Ok Canidrome is all this
This was a former casino but no more casino here, finished
and the main entrance is there
we go to the other one
We go to Kennel block 2 first
[they are being fed now] that is the reason they are so excited
We're just coming to the end of our second day at the Canidrome
It's been a really intense couple of days
intense on a practical level, because of the work we've been doing
but above all these two days have been very emotionally intense
When we crossed the threshold of the Canidrome yesterday
- myself, Bettina and Gavin,
who make up the Pet Levrieri team
here in Macau for 6 days -
we were assailed by a whole mix of emotions
on the one hand huge relief
mixed with joy, because
we were meeting 550 dogs who were finally safe
they're safe and will never have to race again
they'll no longer be racing machines
and this is thanks to the work that's been done in the last 7 years
but on the other hand however
we also had many other painful feelings
and a profound awareness
from seeing it all, first hand
of what these dogs have suffered
of all that these dogs, these greyhounds detained inside the Canidrome
have suffered
in the 55 years of its existence
because... we visited the whole facility
and we became even more strongly aware
of what we had already known
because we had read about it in the stories,
reports and investigations
by Anima Macau and Grey2K USA, over the years,
and by the newspaper South China Morning Post
which over the years
published various damning reports...
but it is one thing to read [articles] and to watch videos
-for instance a very graphic video made by Animals Australia -
and quite another to see it with one's own eyes
and incidentally the Canidrome that we see today
- the Canidrome that we have seen over the last few days -
has been... completely cleaned up
and it is kept clean every day
by all the volunteers and the staff who work here
and it has undergone and is continuing to undergo lots of
improvements in order to improve the living conditions of each of the rescued dogs
at this moment there are 531 dogs inside the Canidrome
there used to be 532 until a few weeks ago
but Jolly Cola who was the oldest greyhound in Macau
at nearly 13 years old, died of old age.
As well as these 531 dogs
there are also 14 at Anima
also rescued from the Canidrome
but at the moment they're at the Anima refuge
ready to be rehomed.
So being here has really brought home to us,
in an even stronger way, how important the fight that
has been going on for the last few years has been.
If the Canidrome has now ceased to exist forever...and no longer exists
as a commercial racetrack
it is thanks to this campaign... to the two campaigns
that have been conducted over the last few years starting from 2011
so for a good 7 years
The Canidrome ceased to exist from the 21st July 2018
and since the 27th July of this year
the greyhounds detained here have been safe
because they have been handed over to the care of Anima Macau
under the supervision and the control
of the government of Macau itself.
So what were the campaigns that made all this possible?
This triple victory - because three important goals were achieved.
First: the definitive closure of this race track
which was the worst dog racing track in the world.
The second important victory was
to save all the greyhounds detained here
and the third very important result, which really is an important marker
for the whole antiracing battle
i.e. the fight against the racing industry
and against the intrinsic cruelty of the racing industry
because the racing industry is incompatible
with any basic standard of welfare and safety for dogs)
...the third important result that was obtained
was to make those responsible
-i.e. the racing industry- pay for the damage done to the dogs
to make them pay for the damage
to make them pay for all the costs
involved in treating these dogs
and to give them back [their lives] and enable them to live a decent life
so to prepare them for adoption
and then to enable their adoption
that is the third very important result.
Therefore, the three important results have been
to close the Canidrome
to save the dogs
and to make those responsible pay
because those responsible must be made accountable for the cruelty inflicted on these dogs.
The Canidrome as I have said was the worst dog race track in the world.
It was opened in 1963,
and in its 55 years of activity
something like 18,000 greyhounds lost their lives in this place.
18,000 greyhounds who were exploited,
ill treated during racing and who died here
either due to old age, or following racing injuries sustained during racing,
or due to racing accidents, or related illnesses
or simply due to being euthanised for economic reasons,
because their performance
no longer fulfilled expectations.
It is calculated that throughout the years,
throughout the decades of life of the Canidrome,
one greyhound a day was euthanised.
30 greyhounds a month.
It was in fact....the race track with the highest internal death rate
and with the highest accident rate during races.
The greyhounds lived inside these
- you can see them all around here - these cages
The building here is made up of
9 lots...so 9 blocks, inside of which there are
9 square blocks
and on every corner...sorry... on every side of these squares, of these blocks
there are 10 cages,
and inside each cage there is a greyhound
and they were all spread out over two floors.
These cages are made of concrete
they didn't use to have any kind of bed or raised bed
so the dogs would lie on the concrete floor
They [the kennels] didn't have any kind of air conditioning or internal lighting
bear in mind that now we're in September
but it's really incredibly hot here
and above all there is an extremely high humidity rate
The dogs would run up to 18 races a day
for 261 days a year
18 races a day in really high temperatures
often exceeding 36 degrees
The campaign that brought about these great results,
the first campaign, effectively took off in November 2011
and was launched in the aftermath of two important events:
one, an article by the South China Morning Post
which in June 2011
reported how within the Canidrome
dogs were being killed at a rate of one per day
so 30 dogs a month were being killed
and how there was a constant stream of dogs being imported from Australia
to the Macau Canidrome
and all these dogs were destined to die there.
In November 2011 a member of the board of Grey2K USA
Charmaine Settle,
visited the Canidrome
and saw with her own eyes
the horrific conditions the greyhounds were living in
Her trip was followed by an investigative report
on the part of Grey2K USA
(still in November 2011)
and then from February 2012
Anima Macau and Grey2K USA officially launched
the international campaign to close the Macau Canidrome
which was called Close the Canidrome.
My name is Christine Dorchak
I am one of the founders of Grey2k USA Worldwide
What we have learned in the Canidrome
is that it is basically a death sentence for greyhounds
Every greyhound that has gone there
over the last decades
is dead
died within months of getting there
The dogs were being exported from Australia for years
and, as Albano mentioned,
we held an international conference with ten
representatives from around the world
We met with the mayor of Macau
with the advisor to the president to Macau
we presented a petition
with 300,000 signatures from around the world
we held rallies
two months later all around the globe
thousands of people
in multiple countries
putting pressure on the president
to close the canidrome
This campaign ended in 2016.
The campaign was joined by Animals Australia, Animals Asia, the AFA Coalition
and many other organisations from around the world
and many organisations in Europe.
As far as Italy is concerned
the campaign was joined by Pet Levrieri
which was in fact the only Italian association to take part in it
and is part of the international movement which first took action
to close the Canidrome
Then from 2016 onwards the second campaign took off
called Save the Macau Greyhounds
led and promoted by three organisations
once again Anima Macau, Grey2K USA and Pet Levrieri
and this second campaign brought about
the second important result
so not only to close the Canidrome
but to save all the greyhounds detained therein
Now we have entered the third phase, which in a way
explains the work we have been doing here over these few days
and the third phase involves finding for each of these rescued dogs
a forever home
with families who can show them
what it means to be loved and respected.
So this third phase has begun
which is the international adoption plan
aiming to rehome each one of these dogs.
Today we are here... we have been spending these days here at the Canidrome
as well as to help, also in order to meet the dogs,
to start doing the first preliminary character assessments
of the dogs who will be coming to Europe
and also in order to make an in depth appraisal
of the physical health conditions of these dogs
Most of them are in an appropriate condition for travel
but they will still need to be prepared for the journey
so they will not only need to be sterilised and have dental treatments
but also and above all
they will need to be restored to good health
in order to be fit enough to travel.
After which, these dogs will be able to be rehomed
in the United States, in Europe: in Italy, France, the UK, Ireland,
and other countries in Europe
in Australia
Some are being adopted here in Macau and in Hong Kong
and elsewhere in the world.
The fundamental condition that must be fulfilled
in order to be able to adopt one of these dogs
is that the country these dogs will go to must have
welfare protection laws for greyhounds [pet animal protection laws]
because their safety and welfare must be guaranteed.
So this is an absolutely essential condition.
We have a safety net of more than 50 refuges
distributed around the world
who have adhered on a practical level
to our international rehoming plan for these dogs.
So we are here to do this work.
Bear in mind that in the Canidrome
nearly all the dogs are Australian
because they used to be exported to Macau from Australia
but then from the end of 2015 the Australian airlines
refused to continue transporting Australian greyhounds here
thanks to the Close the Macau Canidrome campaign which had exposed
the unacceptable and inhumane conditions
- unacceptable for any civilised country -
in which the greyhounds were being kept at the Canidrome
and so as it was no longer possible to import greyhounds from Australia
the Canidrome began to try and get hold of greyhounds from Europe
and specifically from Ireland
and in fact 9 Irish greyhounds were exported here to the Canidrome
and were detained here.
For a while we feared that some of them
might have died at the Canidrome
but they are all alive
they were saved
two of them have been rehomed locally
while the other seven will be rehomed in Europe.
This is the Irish guy
[high maintenance?]
yes no
[It says] Brighten Righ
Maybe before it was High Maintenance
[yes, High Maintenance, ok]
This is a big guy, very big
[were there many dogs from Ireland?]
this one
[was there more than one? 10, 20?]
There came 9
two were adopted [in Macau]
and 7 goes back [to Europe]
If everything goes well, the first transports
of greyhounds to Europe will start from January onwards
because it takes four months to prepare them,
as there is a whole set of veterinary and border obligations
that must be fulfilled in respect of European legislation
for the transportation of animals
from non EU member states
such as China.
So there's a whole procedure which is pretty long and complicated
perfectly doable but still... lengthy
to do the anti rabies blood tests.
I had a meeting with SPCA Hong Kong
We are beginning the transfer I told her
Don't worry about supporting us in Hong Kong because Yat Yeun pay all
So we will get Pet Mover (the shipping company)
to handle everything until the dogs arrive in Italy or the UK
I just need to know from you what is the best number
So if all goes well they'll arrive in Europe from January onwards.
We're involved - and some of our work here is about that too -
in organising the international transports [to Europe].
So please follow us
because the dogs' profiles will soon be online [on the Pet Levrieri website]
