and, uh, today let's take a look at the word, WOULD
Recently, a lot of people here on YouTube and Instagram
have been asking me about how to use WOULD.
I think it's a great question!
So, for today's English lesson, let's check it out!
According to the dictionary WOULD is the past of will,
but you know we use will for the future
and there is no past of the future.
But there are a lot of different ways that we use WOULD.
In fact, for today's English lesson we're going to look a
eleven of those ways.
First of all, we use WOULD to show that
something we were expecting didn't happen.
The car wouldn't start last night
because the battery was dead.
I pressed the power button, but the TV wouldn't go on.
Even though I had the right key, the door wouldn't open.
In a similar way we use WOULD to show that
a person wasn't willing to do something
that we were expecting.
I asked her many times but she wouldn't help me.
The boss wouldn't talk to anyone today.
I wonder what happened.
I asked Jack but he wouldn't tell me what was wrong.
Next, we use WOULD with IF to talk about
imaginary or hypothetical situations.
Grammar teachers like to call this the second conditional.
If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.
Ahh...You know if I were taller, I would play basketball.
I think if I were an animal I would be a dog.
In a similar way we use WOULD with IF to give advice.
If I were you, I would stop smoking.
You're having trouble with your car?
If I were you, I would take it right to the dealer.
If I were you I would try to visit as many places
as possible when you're on vacation.
Keep in mind, with that grammar we always use
if I WERE and not if I WAS.
If I were you!
Speaking of if, we also use
WOULD HAVE plus the PP verb plus IF
to talk about how the past may have been different.
Your grammar teacher probably calls this
the third conditional.
If I had known about the test, I would have studied.
I would have called you if I had enough time.
You didn't invite Jack on the fishing trip?
He would have enjoyed that.
You'll notice in that last example
I said, "he would have enjoyed that"
and I didn't include the IF clause.
That's because a lot of times in spoken English,
the IF clause is implied.
We also use would to talk about
someone's usual or typical behavior in the past.
When I was a kid,
my grandfather would tell us funny stories.
I remember that guy.
He would sit at his desk all day and watch videos.
When Jack was a kid,
he would spend most of his time playing video games.
We also use WOIULD when we
criticize someone's behavior or actions.
Using WOULD this way shows that the speaker is
complaining about the person's actions or behavior.
Oh! You would eat the last cookie!
Why didn't you save it for me?
Tommy said you look fat?
Ah, he would say something like that.
He always speaks to directly.
Joe took off today.
He would do that when it's our busiest season.
You should fire that guy.
We also use WOULD HAVE plus the PP VERB and BUT
to talk about a situation in the past.
In that situation, something didn't go right.
Maybe you wanted to do something,
but you were unable to do it
Sorry I'm late.
I would have called
but I didn't have enough time.
We would have gone to the party,
but my mom came down with a cold.
You know I would have eaten that last donut,
but I saved it for you.
We also use WOULD YOU LIKE
to make a polite question.
WOULD YOU LIKE is a more polite form of
DO YOU WANT.
You look like you're having a hard time.
Would you like my help?
Hey! Would you like more coffee?
Hey Jack.
Would you like to come to the party tomorrow?
Next, we use it WOULD BE plus an adjective to express
our feelings about a situation.
It would be nice to see you when you come to New York.
It would be great to use the rooftop lounge
for my party.
Wow. You know it would be a shame to stay indoors
on such a beautiful day like this.
We also use WOULD LIKE TO or WOULD LOVE TO
when we want to express
our strong desire to do something.
I would love to go to Paris someday.
I'd like to try that restaurant.
Everyone says it's really good.
