What are some household cleaning hacks that I can teach my family?
Yes, that is a great question and we are going to talk about five or six of those today.
Hi there, I'm Angela Brown, and this is Ask A House Cleaner.
This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question,
and I get to help you find an answer.
Now today's show is brought to us by MyCleaningConnection.com
And that is a resource hub with a whole bunch of cleaning hacks, and tips, and tricks, and
books, and podcasts, and all kinds of stuff that will make you and your family a better
house cleaner.
Alright, onto today's show which is from a homeowner who writes in, and she wants to
know some cleaning hacks.
These are like shortcuts.
Well, I got news for you: there are no shortcuts in cleaning if you're going to do a thorough
job and you're going to clean.
You can do maintenance cleaning, which is going to be quicker than if you just do a
onetime deep cleaning every so often.
So the cleaning hack there is do it frequently, and then it will take a lot less time.
But there are no shortcuts.
Alright, so the very first thing I want to talk about is the One Touch method.
Now, this is a great system that will help you get in the habit of touching things only
once.
So let's say that you get ready to go to bed at night, and you take off your shirt.
That's one touch.
Now instead of dropping it on the couch, and then let's say that you're going to have to
pick it up and put it in the laundry, and then you're going to have to take it out of
the laundry and hang it up.
Can it be hung up right now?
Does it have any more life left in it?
If no, then it goes in the hamper right now.
You take it off, that's one touch, it goes in the hamper.
Now you're done.
You touched it once.
If it goes on the hanger you took it off, and it goes on the hanger, that's your one
touch.
Same applies with bath towels.
You use your bath towel, one touch.
You're using it right now, what are you going to do with it next?
So what you do with it next is the one touch.
Don't set it down cause then you have to pick it up again and then it's two touches.
So it either goes in the hamper or it goes hung up so that you can use it again.
Now, the same goes for everything.
It's groceries, it's book bags, it's mail.
When you bring the mail in, instead of setting it down on the counter go through it right
now while it is in your hand.
It's one touch.
Does this go in the bill paying section?
Does this go in the trash?
And guess what: in the mail today that's pretty much all there is.
It's either a bill or its junk.
And so, am I going to put it in the bill stack, or am I going to put it in the garbage can?
Don't make a stack of it on your kitchen counter, that's not where it goes, and that's two touches.
So the One Touch system is a great household hack.
Alright, another hack is Give One, Get One.
So if somebody gives you something you are going to make sure that you give something
away at the same time.
So let's say it's your birthday and somebody buys you a new pair of shorts.
Okay, so you got a new pair of shorts, so now you're going to get rid of one.
You're going to go inside your closet, you're going to say, "I have to give up one item.
I got one item, I'm going to give one away."
And then find one item that you can get rid of, so that you have the same amount of space.
It's not, "I'm going to get, get, get, and never give anything away."
And I say give things away, give them to your friends, give them to the Goodwill, recycle
them, if there's someone else that can use them.
If you don't have anybody that you want to give them away to you can use an app like
Next Door, you can say, "Hey, I've got five free pairs of jeans."
And you can take pictures of them and say, "They're in a box at the end of my driveway,"
put your address out there.
And within seconds they will be gone.
Someone will pick them up and take them and they're gone, you don't even have to go to
the Goodwill, or the Salvation Army, or wherever you donate clothes.
So if you get something, give something up.
Get a new pair of shoes, give an old pair away, right?
That way you're always creating space for the things that you have, and you're living
a life of minimalism instead of just hoarding extra things.
Alright, another household hack, and I recommend this for every one of every age, whether you
live in a house or an apartment, or a college dorm, or whatever: underneath every bathroom
sink I recommend having a roll of paper towels, a scrubby sponge - which is a no-scratch scrubby
sponge that you will use for the insides of your sinks, the outsides of your toilet, and
the inside of your tub - and then also a bottle of powdered cleanser.
They have Ajax, they have Comet, they have Barkeeper's Friend.
I don't care what brand you use, they're all pretty good.
But keep a bottle of that underneath your bathroom sink.
Because if you start to see signs creeping up inside your toilet, just a couple of shakes
of powder in there, the toilet brush, and you can get rid of the toilet ring.
If there starts to be scum on the bathroom tub you can go ahead and just put a few shakes
in there, scrub it out with the no scrubby sponge, the no scratch scrubby sponge, and
you're good to go again, right?
So there are maintenance tools underneath your bathroom sink.
Another thing that needs to be under there is a wastebasket, and a bottle of all-purpose cleaner.
And then every single day, every day, here's a household hack: every day, when you are
done in the bathroom - you're done in there, you've taken your shower, you've put on your
makeup, you've done your hair, you've shaved, whatever it is, you're getting ready to leave
- you are not done until you've done a quick wipe down of everything.
And that means pulling out the shower curtain so that it can drip dry without ... like if
it's all bunched up it will get mold on it, so pull it out so that it can drip dry.
If you have shower glass doors you want to squeegee those doors down.
You have to do a once-through of your bathroom so that your bathroom is clean and tidy, and
you basically reset it for your next use, which is when you come back tonight from work
or school.
And you're going to get ready for bed, and guess what?
You do another once through of the bathroom before you leave and reset it before tomorrow.
So it doesn't take a lot of work to clean it, because a lot of people let their bathrooms
go, and go, and go.
Weeks and months pass, and there's just all kinds of crud that builds up in the bathroom.
But if you're cleaning it twice a day and you're just wiping everything down ... and
I say the roll of paper towels because if you are in maintenance mode you'll be able
to wipe down your whole bathroom with one of those half sheets of a paper towel.
And you can wipe down the toilet and everything at the same time.
That will be the last thing that you wipe down.
Then you toss the paper towel and you have cleaned your entire bathroom.
You've wiped everything down, polished the faucets, and you're done.
It's awesome, and your bathroom always looks guest ready.
Alright, another thing.
We just talked about the shower curtain.
If your shower curtain is icky, and there's some gunk on it, you should probably do this
like once a month.
Take the plastic shower curtain liner off the shower, and put it inside the washing
machine with one cup of white cleaning vinegar, and run it through a cycle.
And that will erase all of the mold, and the gunk, and the water spots, and all the stuff
from your shower curtain.
Then when you take it out of the laundry it's going to be wet because it doesn't shake off
the water.
So put it in a little bucket, take it back to the bathroom, and then rehang it, pull
it and stretch it out, and it will drip dry, and it will drip dry nice and clean.
So just run it through a regular load in the washing machine with one cup of vinegar.
So that's a great household hack that will give your shower curtain a whole new life.
Alright, one more hack before we're done here.
That's the inside of the microwave.
Because the microwave gets used a lot in most people's homes, and sometimes people cook
things and they forget to put a lid on it.
So a household hack is when you cook something, go ahead and just buy one of those lids.
It's got air vents in the top, and it just fits over a plate of food.
And use it every time.
And then when you cook your food your food stays nice and moist, doesn't dry out your
food, and it doesn't splatter all over the inside of your microwave.
But, if you do splatter you can take a small shallow bowl and fill it full of water and
run it in the microwave for let's say, I don't know, four minutes?
And that will create some steam, and it creates the boiling effect.
Just leave it in there for a couple of minutes, and as you open the microwave door you'll
see all the steam on the inside.
It's just loosened everything up for you.
Now you grab a paper towel and you wipe everything out, and you're as good as new.
So it's a small household hack but just get in the habit of putting a lid on your stuff
in the microwave, which will prevent most of that.
So those are a couple of household hacks that I highly recommend, and that will save you
a lot of time in the cleaning process.
And this is stuff that you can teach everyone in the family to use because they're so easy.
Alright, that's my two cents for today.
And until we meet again,
leave the world a cleaner place than when you found it.
