The film is always credited with a male actor
I think there are a lot of powerful women in our industry
It's not even about the guys, it's 'us' working hard,
playing hard, living our life. It really has nothing to do
with anyone else.
So we're going to talk about "Sui Dhaaga",
we're talking about your characters, your journeys,
and also how important is the message the film is trying
to communicate, that you do something for yourself
and that's always going to be more gratifying.
So I will start with you Anushka,
ho toh tum kaafi "role model" type, she's an actor,
she's a producer, she has her own business.
She's married to a sweetu also, so that's great.
But you're now also a 'meme'! Congratulations!
It doesn't get better than that!
That's something that's going to come in your profile
And also now a 'meme'!
Raging meme queen!
In your career, what I really appreciate and I know the
audiences do also, that you ensure that your female
characters, because that's the character you play,
are very layered. So is this a conscious decision?
Is it a responsibility you feel towards your fans?
Or you would just not do anything
Ya it's also just representing the right kind of women,
and also I feel that human beings are very very complex
creatures, you know? And I feel a lot of times, movies
just make them very surface, it's all upar upar,
superficial. Whereas, we are really complex people!
And women are such beautifully complex creatures
that it's so important to show them, just the way they
are. So I feel like, there it becomes your duty.
And not really like a duty, because you must do it
or because it's the right thing to do, but
also because that's what you connect with!
You want to see women and you want to portray women
that you either know, or you know? You are.
Absolutely!
So Malini you, and I love you, you know that
I think the whole 'Made In India'... and we have for years
had this conversation, that you started a blog when that
career didn't exist in this country. Now everybody
is a fashion blogger, a lifestyle blogger... all of that
And now so many years later, we host events, we make
ad films, we started 'The Girl Tribe'! Hello girls!
There is so much stuff that is happening!
When she actually started, I did my 1st ever interview
with her, it was like a very new phenomenon in the Hindi
film industry! She was like this cool cat who had entered
and a lot of people in PR were like, 'yeh karti kya hai?'
Because nobody knew the definition of what a
blogger would be, and what it meant.
So actually the question you want to ask her, even I
want to know this Malini, how did you think of doing
this? And what was your experience before this that you
thought you can do this?
Before you answer, I would also quickly add that the
first time she interviewed me was in Delhi
and I was walking for Wendell Rodricks, for the fashion
show and the PR people did not understand what a
force she could be!
And I remember they were like, 'yeah yeah we'll do your
interview... and I kept looking at her and I could see that
she was totally engaged and she was just standing out!
So I remember telling her, come let's do the interview
I was like , 'no she doesn't have to wait', let's do it now!
And we did the interview, she asked me interesting
questions! She asked me questions related to fashion,
but not in the way that , 'what's your favorite trend?'
Not those kind of questions! Questions like, the way I
see things, how I express myself in terms of fashion
and I thought, that was super cool!
Thank you, you guys are so sweet! And I have to say
that you guys are the easiest and sweetest people to work with!
I remember I asked Varun to come and do a Valentine's
Special with me! We hung out at the 'Google Hangout'
That was so cool actually! It was really fun!
And I remember every time I've worked with you,
I remember we went to Goa as well and it was fun!
So, to answer your question, I started it as a hobby!
I used to be a back-up dancer for Sukhbir for 6 years!
Oh-ho-ho-ho
Any songs we know of?
Like oh-ho-ho-ho, all that
(Way in the back)
She's one of the babes!
So then I got into the whole digital thing with MTV and I
was a Radio Jockey for a long time and blogging wasn't
a thing! I used to write a gossip column called 'Malini's
Mumbai' in Mid Day!
I remember that! Hmmm, some really spicy stuff
And I felt like I wasn't really writing anything of
substance, so I started a blog. In the blog I was able to
capture all the things that I love in India,
and the people that I've met, because I feel like...
I grew up all over the world, my father was in the
foreign service & I remember I was 9 years old
and somebody said, "Oh you're from India, do you go to
school on an elephant?" I'm like that would be effing
awesome! But no! People don't know what it's like here..
So it started by accident, but it's really something that I
love so much and I've got to meet such amazing people
I've got to interview such incredible people, look at the
Girl Tribe, look at these amazing women! Some of them
have come from out of cities just to meet us and talk to
us, because they're all entrepreneurs. They have so
much passion, and I think people don't realize anymore
about this audience. That's what I love about this film,
is that you're encouraging people to think about that!
Quickly now tell me, how much you're worth? (laughs)
You tell me!!
Okay so Varun, baby. Who smells likeee?
Who smells like Strawberry!
Toh aise Yash Raj ke picture mein, Switzerland toh nahi
lekar gaye tumhe!
But what I want to talk to you about is that your career
you've also spoken about this, you've consciously
decided to "balance" between the content and the
commercial. And 'Sui Dhaaga' just from the trailer looks
like it has managed to do that!
So first of all, do you agree? And second that the
communication that you're trying to make through the
film, which is, "Made In India", do your own thing, how
important is that to you on a personal level?
I think on a personal level, the "Made In India" theme in
itself, is something that is very very important to me.
I'm very patriotic just by nature, and I always say this
patriotism does not need to be said, or "dharna" nikalne
ki zarurat nahi hai, it's something that needs to be felt
So, through art, this was a small way for us, putting it
forward and showing it in a nice way. Above that I feel,
the balancing of commercial and content, I think, ya to
some extent, actually I wouldn't give Sharad all the
credit for this, I would actually give it to Anushka and
me. Because we are the commercial element in the film.
So Anushka, you. How much merit is there to start your
own production house? So that you can control the kind
of work you do? How much merit is there, to start your
own fashion brand? Is it just a creative call?
Or are you looking at these as financial investments?
No of course, you're not going to do it without the
commerce part of it... I think it's just important to do
things, spend your time, we're busy as it is,
just being actors, and you know just doing films and
acting is a tedious job. So if you're really diversifying
yourself in a way that I did, it'll have to be something
that you truly believe in, and it's just something that
comes very naturally to you, so for me starting
"Clean Slate Films" was because I wanted to tell stories
and I felt like I should be able to utilise the position that
I have to be able to tell these stories.
In my clothing line, I wanted to be able to create a brand
which was truly Indian. And it's a brand that girls from
all over India, especially interiors of India, can feel like
this is something that we should own.
You know there's a girl from The Tribe who I think has
her own fashion line, and I think that's so inspiring! To
have someone who's a role model like you, that says 'I can do it too!'
Okay so Varun, you recently, had a conversation with
Anupama if i'm not wrong, or Rajeev Masand where you
said that, how you've been actively telling Alia
that she should increase her price and how you'll get
into so much trouble! Anushka also for years has been
talking about the disparity in the payments in the
industry. Why are more people not doing this? Thank
you for being on our side! To be honest, it's just about
recognition. The problem with talking about it is
that it becomes very loose talk. Like, "Oh actors are just
talking about it and nothing is happening." So that
demerits the whole conversation. And I feel actions
speak louder than words.
I feel now, with this topic of "disparity of pay" I know a
lot of people will say, let's talk about it (x2)
I think there are a lot of powerful women in our industry
And I feel that the change is happening, I feel like now
I'd want to speak more for it, and speak very proudly for
it, when it actually happens!
