Marhaba! Today Salma and I
will talk about Google Search
and how it works!
And more importantly
we're going to talk about the latest and most important features
that you might have not known about Google Search
Since Google started out in 1998
our primary priority was to organize the world's information
and make it universally accessible
And when you search for example the definition of a word
Google looks for this word
through millions of web pages on the internet
We then organize the search results
based on more than 200 factors
like the number of times this word is mentioned in a web page
and whether the website is a reliable and established source
Then we organise all these results on Google's main page
All of this happens in less than one second
and another thing you don't know about Search
is that the first fully Arabic results page was served in 2000
And over the years
we built a team dedicated to develop Google Search in Arabic
One of the features we have here in the Arab world
is Job Search
which helps job seekers in the region
find hundreds of opportunities in their city or area
Another feature is Google Flights
which helps you find and book flights from and to anywhere in the world
As for football fans
you can now find everything from match schedule
team formations
and the results
Most of us use this following feature
When you want to go to a restaurant or a shop
you can check its location, timings
reviews, and even pictures all on Google Search
And another feature that I personally like very much
is Voice Search
You just say what you're looking for
and you get all the results
This feature understands 15 different Arabic dialects
Let's test its understanding of Syrian
How do we make Tabouleh?
It worked on my dialect! Let's try the Egyptian dialect with Salma
Salma, we're trying out Voice Search
give us some Egyptian to test Google
What time is it in Cairo?
It's now 4:30 pm in Cairo!
Abdulrahman!
We're trying Voice Search on Google
and we'd like to test its Saudi dialect
Sure!
How do we roast Arabic coffee?
That's great! Videos too!
We just saw how the Voice Search feature
understood several Arabic dialects
Let us hear from Najeeb Jarrar
my colleague here at Google
how this feature works
When you use Google Voice Search
Google analyzes your query
and compares it with billions of similar results in the index
We identify your dialect
the words you've mentioned
and what could you possibly search for next
Google then compares these suggestions with what was actually said
At the same time
we search for answers that match your queries
We then give you the results as fast as possible
We've been working on Voice Search since 2008
Since then
as technology moves faster
this feature has been getting better and better every year
This in turn creates a better experience for people
In the past
we used to compare your voice queries
with a sound recordings of Arabic
Today, we're using Deep Neural Networks
and machine learning technology
we don't necessarily need to compare the full spoken sentence
Instead
we identify distinct words in the sentence
that are unique to your dialect
and autocomplete your query
And then brings you the answer you're looking for
This entire process takes less than one second
Without you noticing the work that goes on in the background
You end up asking a question
Google understands your query and answers you directly
Do we expect Voice Search to get better in the future?
Absolutely!
With the continuous development of technology
this feature will get better in accuracy and relevance
Brilliant, thanks Najeeb
Thanks Salma
Let me tell you about three unique facts
about Google Search
Look at the photo Salma shared with me
You can get more details about it through Google Image Search
and even where it was taken
If you're working on a Google Doc
You can use the Explore feature
to look for photos on Google Search
or get answers to your queries without leaving the document
Finally, you can check Google Trends
to see what are the most trending searches around the world
And with this, we end our second episode
We hope you liked it
Don't forget to like, share
subscribe, and all that stuff
I'm Marwa
And I'm Salma
We'll see you next time
