Stand Your Ground Laws Linked To Massive Surge in Homicides - Duration: 3:30.

Papantonio: Florida's controversial stand-your-ground law was supposed to increase public safety,

but new figures show that the 11 year old law's failing miserably at protecting the

state's citizens.

In fact, gun homicides in Florida have increased by a whopping 232 percent since 2005.

Here to talk about why that is is Farron Cousins, executive editor of one of the biggest trial

magazines in the country, The Trial Lawyer Magazine.

Farron, I'm wondering, how did researches determine that the increase in gun homicides

in Florida is linked to stand-your-ground law?

How did they get there?

Cousins: Well, basically they did what a good researcher does and they looked at the sample

prior to the law's enactment in 2005 compared to it afterwards, adjusted for population

density and things like that, population growth, and they found out that as soon as this law

was signed by then governor Jeb Bush, there was an immediate spike, almost over night,

in the number of homicides and gun related deaths in the state of Florida and it was

all directly attributed to this specific law that the NRA pushed upon Florida.

I have to say, it is interesting.

It was sold to the public under the guise that it was going to keep us safer, but in

reality it was just a way for the NRA to make more money from more people buying gun.

That's what this law was about 100%.

Papantonio: Farron, what has research shown about the role race plays in stand-your-ground

incidents?

What's it showing?

Cousins: It's actually pretty disgusting, but unfortunately it's what you would expect

from this country today, and that is that when a white person uses stand-your-ground

defense to justify killing a black person in the state of Florida, they are more likely

to get off as opposed to a black person using stand-your-ground as a defense for killing

a white person.

The justice system, not just in Florida, but all over this country is very racist when

you look at it.

A white person is much more likely to get off for the same crime committed by a black

person or a Hispanic person and it's no different with the stand your ground laws.

You go case by case and the white people are more likely to get off when they kill a black

person.

Not just they get off in general, but when they kill a black person.

It's a really disgusting trend that's not just taking place in Florida, it's taking

place in the 30 states that have also passed similar laws.

Papantonio: Farron, nearly 30 other states have followed Florida's lead in passing stand-your-ground

legislation, have we seen an increase in gun homicide rates in those states as well or

is it just Florida that we're talking about here?

Cousins: We're looking at every single state, no less than an 8% increase in gun related

homicides since these laws were signed.

8% is the best case scenario.

Other states are even higher than that, but the minimum we're seeing is 8% increase in

these homicides directly related, again, to the stand-your-ground laws, this castle doctrine

of people thinking they can go out there, kill someone, and get away with it because

they just say it was self defense.

Papantonio: So that is obviously a trend.

There's no way to not call it a trend.

Thank you, Farron.

Little Blue Penguin Facts for Kids Fairy Penguins Penguins 101 #penguins #Australia #NewZealand - Duration: 3:13.

Also known as Fairy penguins, blue penguins, and little blue penguins, this species is

the smallest of all penguins; a fully developed adult can weigh only 2.6 lb.

They have a fragile and delicate appearance highlighted by a bluish color unique among

all species of penguins.

Hi, welcome to Animal Facts, today we discuss the super cute, Little Blue Penguin.

If you love animals, click that subscribe button and Let's Get Started.

Comment your favorite penguin fact below.

10.

Little penguins are only found in southern Australia and New Zealand.

In Australia little penguin colonies are scattered around the coastline from near Perth on the

west coast, to Sydney on the east coast, and around Tasmania.

Phillip Island has only one remaining little penguin colony, part of which can be seen

at the Penguin Parade which offers up-close views of little penguins.

9.

Little blue penguins are mainly nocturnal as they perform most of their activity during

the night creating small groups of about ten members or less.

They are not migratory and stay close to their colonies most of the time.

8.

Unlike larger species, they can dive only to a depth of 230 feet for approximately 35

seconds, but usually they do it in depths ranging from 59 to 102 ft.

7.

They can get used to human presence and stop fearing them, especially when they are in

captivity or when sharing territory with tourists.

6.

They love small fish, especially sardines, and anchovies, but they can also hunt squid,

krill, and small octopus.

From the sea floor, little penguins may eat crab larvae, sea horses and crustaceans.

However, the kind of prey may change to adapt to the availability of food in their habitat.

Like most penguins, they swallow their food whole.

5.

Little penguins spend their days out at sea hunting for food in the shallow waters close

to the shore.

They can often be seen congregating in groups, referred to as rafts.

4.

Little blue penguins are monogamous most of the time, and they are strongly attached to

their partners, although still there are a few cases of divorce.

3.

Little penguins face predators at sea such as sharks, seals (Lion, Leopard, and Fur),

Killer whales and predators on land such as Sea Eagles and large Gulls.

Man-made hazards include oil spills, plastic, road kills, gill net fishing and loss of breeding

habitats.

2.

Little penguins moult between February and April staying ashore for approximately 17

days.

Like most birds, Penguins moult to replace their old and worn feathers.

They do this so they can maintain a water proof plumage.

Without waterproof feathres, they would lose lots of heat and eventually die of hypothermia.

They cannot eat during moult as they are not waterproof and so can't go out to sea to fish.

Instead, they almost double their body weight beforehand.

1.

While not officially endangered, Human impacts such as introduced predators, over exploitation

of marine ecosystems, oil spills, marine pollution and climate change can threaten little penguins

and their ecosystems.

The more we know about little penguins, the more we can do to protect them.

Well, there we have it, a tiny list for a little penguin?
