THE WOOD ANTS | Formica paralugubris - Duration: 7:42.

Foreste Casentinesi National Park

Tosco-Romagnolo Apennines

A large protected area of the Apennines including

forests and woods that are among the largest and best preserved in Italy

which keeps in

a very interesting flora and fauna patrimony

Millennial trees and big predators are found here like

the wolf and the golden eagle

but I'm here for another reason ...

In this park, between the 1950s and 1980s populations of Formica belonging

to the rufa group were imported to provide support for the

biological struggle against various species of insects considered

harmful to the forest.

Known as red ants or wood ants

the species belonging to the rufa group have in common the ability

to build great ant nests that are

unlikely to go unnoticed ...

In Italy there are 7 species of the group

and the species imported in this area is Formica paralugubris

The nests of these ants are

large mounds of grass, twigs

and needles of conifers that are positioned

to build a kind of dome

usually on a decaying stump

They can reach considerable heights and diameters

even several meters they live in wooded areas

with a certain preference for clearings

this is because the anthills are heated by the rays of the sun

The structure of the anthills is built in such

a way as to allow the ants to manage the temperature inside

keeping it stable

The workers of Formica paralugubris are polymorphic

with a length that can vary from 5 to 9 millimeters

and a two-color combination of red and brown

they have a dark spot on the head

They have large jaws

and if threatened they can spray formic acid from the abdomen with a

jet that can reach even 15 cm

It is not dangerous for humans

however it can cause burning and redness if it comes

in contact with eyes and also has an extremely pungent odor

It has been observed that many birds

annoy the anthills with the intention of being hit by the squirts of formic acid

using it as an anti-parasitic treatment

Adult colonies can reach really large numbers

we are talking about over 500,000 individuals

including countless queens who cooperate for egg laying

Formica paralugubris is highly polyginic

and often young queens are readmitted to the mother colony

or form colonies nearby

once mating is completed

The new anthills are established by budding

from the existing mother colonies or

through temporary social parasitism

The target species of this parasitism belong

to the genus Formica but on some rare occasions species

of the genus Lasius have also been observed

Neighboring anthills often belong to the same colony

and form a single large network of nests connected to each other

This gives them the chance to move from one nest to another

if the environmental conditions change drastically

Mating flights take place

during the spring and are often accompanied by large battles between colonies

of the same species that redefine the

territorial boundaries

These attacks seem to be linked to

the defense and maintenance of the foraging paths and observing the skirmishes

and the formation of the paths on the territory

surrounding the anthill it seems that the latter

vary according to seasonal changes

The best trails are reinforced

and if an ant not belonging to the colony crosses these paths

a hostile activity occurs

Formica paralugubris is a very aggressive and active custodian

which often attacks nearby nests of other species

until they are completely eliminated

Workers' foraging habits change according to the environment

they breed aphids and tend to prey on the most common insects in the area

whether they are on the ground or on the trees

among bark branches and foliage

They are in constant competition with other predators

for food resources and they prefer live preys

instead of playing the role of scavengers

In addition they dedicate a lot of energy to the collection of

dried resin grains which they place at the entrances of the anthills

to use their anti-bacterial properties

Passing on the ants disinfect themselves

before entering the anthill

it works as a kind of doormat

The workers recognize their companions through chemical signals

like it happens also for the Argentine Mega-colonies

their diet affects these signs of recognition

Generalizing

workers of the same colony recognize each other because

they follow the same diet

The smell of a colony is equivalent

to the fingerprints for human beings every single

colony has its own specific smell that distinguishes it from the others

even if they belong to the same species

The growth rate of Formica paralugubris colonies

is very rapid the 1968 census

estimated the presence of about 70 anthills in the park

now over 420 are confirmed

This can only confirm that the populations of Formica paralugubris

have perfectly adapted and are growing

however it is an alien species

that is introduced artificially

Although its role is essential to keep harmful species under control

all the other arthropods living in the reserve

are also paying the consequences

The mentality on this topic has changed

a lot compared to the past years and nowadays it is strictly

forbidden and not recommended to introduce alien species in any territory.

Fortunately, the situation in the park is

limited and controlled

There are not keeping info for this species simply

because it is beyond the reach of any breeder

It is an ant that runs hundreds of meters a day

and is extremely delicate in regards

to the conditions it needs to live in

in addition an adult colony can consume something like 40 kg of insects

and tens of kg of honeydew every year

The awood ant is on the list of species close to the threat

of extinction and therefore must be protected and respected

as the signs within the park suggest

I would like to steal you a few more seconds to let you know that

10 ways Women can boost their Sex Drive

Everyone's sex drive is different and will likely change due to circumstances and over

the course of their life and a recent research has shown that for women over 50, lack of

libido can be a real issue with 75% suffering from a reduced sex drive.

Of course, the main thing that kills libido is stress so being as relaxed as possible

is essential but there are a number of other natural ways a low sex drive can be combated.

Several experts and nutritionists have outlined some reliable methods in improving sex drive

that can help women of any age.

From eating chocolate and using lube through to pelvic exercises and supplements, here

are 10 things to try if you feel your libido is lower than you want it to be.

Get high blood flowing:

Shona Wilkinson, a nutritionist at SuperfoodUK.com explained: 'Poor circulation and blood flow

can lead to stagnant energy within the body.

This is further going to worsen the problem of low libido.

Good blood flow to your sexual organs is vital for arousal, sexual stimulation and pleasure.

The more blood flow, the more intense the orgasm.

One way to increase blood flow is by getting out and moving more.

'Try to add at least 20 minutes of heartbeat raising exercise to your routine each day.

This could be as simple as a brisk walk, a session on a mini trampoline or a visit to

the gym.

Adequate hydration will help too, purified water, fruit teas and herbal teas add to your

hydration levels'.

Boost with basil Nutritionist Cassandra Barns told us:

'Granted, it's not the most obvious of food choices, however, bear with us!

Basil can help increase circulation, stimulate the sex drive and boost fertility.

And, surprisingly, the scent of basil (supposedly) drives us wild with desire.

Basil oil was used by Mediterranean prostitutes as a perfume, to err, attract their customers…a

dab of fresh pesto behind your ears ladies?!

No, we thought not, but add some fresh basil to your salad to help get your libido going!'

Communication is key:

Dr Marilyn Glenville, nutritionist and author of The Natural Health Bible for women, said:

'Relationship troubles can contribute to loss of sexual desire.

If you don't feel listened to, respected or important it is natural to respond with

resentment and that resentment can dampen libido.

It's important to open the lines of communication with your partner, so that anger can be expressed

in places other than the bedroom.

If the problem is severe, such as infidelity, you may want to go to a relationship counsellor.'

Lower stress:

Stress plays a huge role in libido reduction.

The ingredients that our bodies use to make stress hormones are the same ingredients that

are used to make sex hormones.

Your body will always prioritise the production of stress hormones over anything else.

Going back pre-historically, stress hormones were used to get us out of danger, to stop

us being eaten by a tiger.

At that moment in time, your body does not care about sex!

The problem is that in today's over stressed work and home lives, we are constantly producing

these stress hormones, and often not allowing our bodies to make other hormones, such as

sex hormones.'

Cassandra added: 'Stress, sleep and anxiety are all related.

If we don't get enough sleep, we can find it harder to adapt to challenging situations,

and when we can't cope as efficiently with stress it can be harder to have a good nights

rest.

I'd recommend taking Magnesium, which is known as "nature's tranquiliser" and

is needed to relax our muscles and nerves, which helps us to fall into a peaceful sleep.

To ensure you're getting enough magnesium try and include plenty of magnesium-rich foods

in your diet such as, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, fish and leafy green vegetables.

I'd also recommend taking a supplement.'

Loosen up pelvic muscles:

In Ayurvedic culture the second chakra, pin pointed at your navel is related to sexual

energy, so it is important to ensure that all of your energy is flowing through all

of your chakras freely.

'Meditation, yoga and other forms of exercise can be beneficial to both self-esteem and

free flowing energy.

The yoga and exercise will help to loosen up the muscles in the pelvic areas, allowing

good blood and energy flow to the pelvic and surrounding areas.

While on the other side, meditation, helps to calm the mind and connect you to your higher

self, which will help plant positive thoughts and emotions.'

Wetter is better On the subject of using lubes to boost sex drive, Shona said: 'It is much

better down where its wetter- and as we age, our sex hormones naturally deplete.

The loss of oestrogen can cause the tissues of the genital organs to shrink and for everything

to become less sensitive.

The lack of oestrogen causes a loss of vaginal secretions, which can make sex uncomfortable.

And no one wants uncomfortable sex.

Although aging is inevitable, there are natural lubricants that we can use to make things

a little more pleasurable.'

Avoid an irritated vagina:

Vaginal dryness can affect women of all ages, but it is particularly common in women during

menopause, affecting half of all women at this stage in their life.

It is perhaps the most distressing and least talked about symptom of the menopause.

'Vaginal dryness can make your vagina feel dry, itchy and at times tender.

It may take you longer to become lubricated during lovemaking, which can make sexual intercourse

feel uncomfortable, or even painful.

'Normally, mucus membranes (the vaginal epithelium) located at the mouth of uterus

keep the vagina moist.

Oestrogen helps these membranes to produce lubrication and stay plump and soft.

The lubricant is slightly acidic, which helps to protect the vagina from foreign bacteria,

keeping it free from infection.

Low levels of oestrogen also cause the vagina and surrounding connective tissue to lose

elasticity and the tissue that lines the vagina to become thinner and more fragile.

'Avoid douches, talcum powder, hot baths, perfumed toilet papers and bath oils and foams,

as they can irritate the vagina.

Don't wash the inside of your vagina with soap as this will dry out the skin.

The vagina is self-cleansing and in most cases warm water is all that you need to wash it.'

Vitamin intake is key Shona said: 'Ensuring that you have adequate sex hormone production

is essential for maintaining libido.

Once you have decreased your stress levels, and investigated any underlying cause, you

can look at some foods and herbs which may be beneficial.

Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity.

Increase your B6 rich foods such as; avocados, walnuts chicken and mackerel.'

Eat more fish:

Cassandra said: 'Boost you Omega 3 levels, a multi-tasking hero, not only does this help

reduce irritability, and reduce inflammation in the body, it also enhances your mood, helps

balance your hormones, and it aids healthy production of sex hormones.

Omega 3 is building block of sex hormones in both men and women.

It fights the build up of plaque in the arteries, thereby improving circulation and increasing

sensation.

Omega-3 fatty acids also help with sexual response -raising dopamine levels in the brain

that trigger arousal.

Fish such as wild salmon, sardines, herring and anchovies are also all omega-3 rich.

Enjoy some chocolate:

Simply nibbling a few squares of the good stuff after dinner, you'll help lift your

mood enormously, going from stressed to, well…sexy!

Go for quality dark chocolate (60-70 per cent cocoa solid) which contains the potential

to relax you, intoxicate you and give you sheer pleasure, all thanks to a nutrient called

phenethylamine.

It does this by triggering those feel-good hormones, and, adding to its pleasure-factor,

it provides us with tryptophan, which is a great relaxation chemical; it helps quell

any anxiety.'

Hey there! The reason why I'm doing this video is,

that I want to show you what a custom meal plan is.

And why it is good for you. I'm really excited about it!

Here I have one of my diet plans,

the women hormone balancing diet.

So when you receive our custom meal plan,

it looks like this.

On the first page you can see

all the delicious meals and snacks.

You can put it on your fridge.

This specific diet is good for your

thyroid and adrenal function.

Promotes healthy sex hormone production.

Detoxification.

Reason why I chose this diet is, because

it is high in fibre, protein, calcium and omega 3.

It is perfect for balancing my blood sugar level.

And also I eat more regularly. That is my big wish!

So you know what and when to eat.

It tells me first: grocery shop!

And then I have nutritional values.

I just printed them out. Calories, fat, protein, carbs

and so on. And what does it mean when we are

customizing the diet plan for you?
