The monkey is the animal that does this:
"Uh, uh, uh, uh!"
This is the monkey.
Hello, dear German learners!
Today I would like
speak with you about the secret of learning.
The secret of learning: How do we learn things?
What is the secret to lifelong learning?
And about that I have read a story
in a book called Mastery by George Leonard
and in the story is about an experience
which George Leonard had, which the author had
and this experience was as follows:
He was traveling in the mountains
and he met a group of people,
who beat drums.
And one man, who lives in the mountains,
a mountain man gave the beat.
The one man practically gave the others
a lesson how to drum.
He showd how to drum
and the others copied him.
And George, the protagonist of the story,
went to the people who drummed
and there was a free drum.
There was a drum that was still free.
And he sits down with them and drums with them
and tries to learn.
He tries to copy
what the other people do.
He tries to drum with them
although he cannot drum.
That works quite well
and he drums with them for a while
and then he has had enough and he gets up to leave.
He gets up, he goes
and then he felt a hand on his shoulder.
And it's the man.
He says to him: "You're a good learner!
You're a good learner.
I need your help."
And so he asks George to go to his hut,
to teach him how he can learn.
The man wants to learn.
He says, "Oh, I taught the others,
how to drum.
And you came to us
and you learned very quickly how to drum.
And now I would like,
that you please teach me:
How do you do it that you can learn so fast?
You're a fast learner!
How you do that?
I want to know that."
And the man shows George his work.
The man is potter, actually.
He can drum, but he is actually a potter
and he has made quite a lot of pitchers and cups etc.
and he said to him (he explained to him):
After a while he had lost his creativity.
He had lost his inspiration after a while.
He shows him all his pitchers.
After a while he stopped.
After a while
his works became worse and worse,
because he had less and less inspiration
and less and less creativity
and he asks George: How can I learn again?
How can I regain my creativity?
Well, and George has no idea!
George has never thought about the fact
that he is a good learner.
He does not know what to say to the man.
He was just on the road,
was just hiking
and then he had seen people drumming
and then he went to them,
drummed with them
and he does not even know what to say.
But when the man asks him
"What is the secret of learning?"
– without thinking,
without him having consciously considered this
he simply says
(it bubbles out of him)
he simply says
or rather he hears himself saying ...
He himself is surprised that he says that.
And he says this, he says to him:
"It's very simple: You have to be willing
to make a fool of yourself. "
That's what he says to him.
This is what George tells the man,
who wants to learn how to learn.
He says to him:
"You have to be willing to make a fool of yourself."
What does that mean to make a fool of oneself?
The monkey is the animal that goes like this:
"Uh, uh, uh, uh!"
That is the monkey.
And to act a fool
means to be willing
to face ridicule.
It also means not to worry,
what other people think of you.
So here I am on the road,
I'm here in public
and I'm going like this – like a monkey.
I act a fool.
And in so doing I am being ridiculous.
People can come along and say:
"What is he doing here?
What is he doing, is he crazy? "
I act a fool.
And that is the secret of learning.
That is the secret of learning.
You have to be willing to make a fool of yourself.
You have to be willing to expose yourself to criticism.
You should not be shy about making mistakes.
And especially when learning German it's so important!
This is so incredibly important,
that you are willing to...
It is so important that you are willing
to act a fool
when learning German
that you are willing to make quite a lot of mistakes.
When you learn a language
then you will make so many mistakes.
You make so many mistakes.
I make quite a few mistakes,
when I learn a language.
When I learn Italian
or when I try to speak Italian,
I make so many mistakes!
But you have to be willing to make a fool of yourself.
You have to be willing to make mistakes.
You have to be willing to make a fool of yourself.
You should not worry about
what other people think of you.
Also, the whole reason,
why I can even make these videos,
is because I am willing
to act a fool.
I do this in public, after all.
I walk around with a camera in my hand
and speak into the camera
and people see me
and think to themselves, "What is he doing over there?
What does he do with a camera?
And what is he talking about?"
But I have to be willing
to act a fool
if I want to learn
if I want to produce great things.
And that's like I said also very important
while learning German,
that you are willing to act a fool.
Also in general:
If you really want to learn how to learn your whole life,
if you really constantly
want to learn new things,
then really the secret is the willingness
to make a fool of oneself.
I think it was a very ...
So for me it was a
very big aha moment.
When I read this story,
I thought kinda like:
"Wow, there is much truth in it!"
And I think it's also not without reason,
that the words just "bubbled out"
of the mouth of George Leonard,
that he simply said,
without thinking
and was himself surprised
that he said that.
I think,
that came very much from his subconscious,
because he was not aware
what the secret of learning is.
He just learned
he just sat down, drummed
and I believe that is also the case ...
I mean, if I consider this:
If I were to see people
who drum,
I do not know if I would have the courage,
to just sit down and take part.
But he had the courage to just
join in, to participate
and to drum with them.
And so he exposed himself to criticism.
He was willing to make a fool of himself.
I think,
I made this point very emphatically
and I hope this is helpful for you
and feel free to act a fool.
Go ahead and make mistakes.
I will never think
you're crazy, because
I myself do a lot of crazy things.
I think that's great.
I think that's great if you
have the courage to make mistakes
and have the courage to just learn.
So I'm not going to criticize you for it.
I think that's great
and see you tomorrow.
Bye!
