My name is Eilish San and today we're going to see

how to quantize MIDI in Tracktion Waveform

We have already seen how to record and edit MIDI,

but sometimes we'll want to quantize the notes,

especially if we have recorded them live

But what does quantize mean?

To quantify is to correct the times and durations

of the MIDI notes, basically what it does

is to modify the note start and end times

to the closest selected correct values

For this, first open a clip in the editor

Select all the notes you want to quantize

in the clip and in Quantize select what you want

to quantize and with respect to what value

Selecting "nearest 1 beat" it will quantize

to a beat, if you are in 4/4 it will be a quarter note

Selecting "nearest 1/2 beat" it will be half a beat

or an eighth note in 4/4, "nearest 1/3 beat"

a third of a beat or a triplet sixteenth note,

1/4 a sixteenth note, 1/6 a triplet thirty-second note,

1/8 a thirty-second note, and so on until 1/64 or a two hundred fifty-sixth note

"To nearest (none)" really does not quantize anything

You can quantize start times,

which will modify the start of the note

without changing the duration, that is,

it will move the note by altering

both the start and the end times

You can quantize durations,

modifying the duration without changing the start time,

which will also alter the end time

Quantizing start and end times modifies

both times so that they are in the grid,

which is also altering the duration

This is different from the first case,

since when quantizing the start time,

the end time moves accordingly

to maintain the duration, and did not have to be

quantized to a correct value according to the grid

By quantizing start times without modifying

end times or end times without modifying

start times you are modifying one time

without changing the other, altering the duration

As you can see, quantizing durations

and quantizing end times without modifying

start times can be equivalent since they modify

the same parameters, although the quantized

modify different parameters

With this we have all the notes with perfect

durations and start and end times, but that,

can sound a bit like a robot

To get a humanized effect there is the option

to quantize with grooves, which are templates

that allow specific adjustments to the times

For example, a "Swing 1/2" groove

increases the duration of all the notes

in the first half of the beat, decreasing

the notes in the second half

The percentage is the amount of duration increased

"Swing 1/4" increases the duration of the odd

quarters of a beat, decreasing the pairs

"FastSlow2" speeds up the notes by decreasing

the durations and start times,

while "SlowFast2" slows them down

by increasing the durations and start times

The templates can be edited in the main menu,

in Snapping, Edit groove templates ...

You can see for each groove the length of the pattern,

what represents a note compared to a beat

and the percentage of variation for each

For example, "Swing 1/4" is a pattern of 2 notes,

each lasting 1/4 of a beat, and the second is delayed

by a percentage with respect to the first

"FastSlow2" is a pattern of 8 notes,

each representing a full beat, with different variations

of acceleration being the percentage specified

that of the central note

From here you can modify templates, create new ones,

export, import and reset the templates

If you use grooves often and create

your own grooves, do not forget to export them

to a .trkgroove file so you do not lose them

and import them back in case you have

to change your equipment, format your computer

or reinstall the application
