- [Torae] Thirty MCs came to destroy the mic,
but only one can take the crown for NYC.
Freestyle Friday is back,
and we're give you a recap on one of the illest
battles to hit BET.
This is Freestyle Friday.
(light beat)
- What's up everybody,
I'm Torae and this is Freestyle Friday.
That's right.
BET has resurrected one of the most
beloved rap battle grounds of our time.
We're doing it right here at the Youtube
Studios in NYC.
We're traveling to four major cities
around the world in order to
hear the dopest freestyles,
but of course,
we had to set it off in my backyard,
the birthplace of hip hop,
New York City!
(crowd cheers)
- For the next thirty minutes,
I'm giving you the official blow by blow
of what went down during our
Freestyle Friday livestream.
Thirty MCs from NYC
and allover the East Coast
took the mic for a chance to perform
live at the BET Experience.
I got the highlights, the rooky mistakes,
and the surprises.
I'm giving you the rundown.
- We in here, Freestyle Friday takeover,
y'all know what time it is.
- It's syllable work, man,
it's syllable work.
- Don't mumble your way out of this one.
Everything gotta be clear.
- No bubblegum raps,
no gimmicks, no nothin',
just straight bars for y'all.
- Wait, I'm supposed to say somethin'?
- We all know that to prove your
skills as an MC,
you have to be able to rhyme over
almost any beat,
but we like to make sure
it's a good hip hop beat.
For the livestream,
we enlisted the talented tour rap
premier beat makers.
You know them as Buda and Grandz,
produce for everybody,
from Meek Mill to the Game.
Before we can discuss any of the MC action
that went down at NY,
lets meat our beat makers
and get a feel for the fire that they
cooked up for the New York cipher.
Let's give it up for my guys,
Buda and Granz!
(crowd cheers)
- We're goin' on y'all as America's
favorite Duo, Buda the Future...
- Grandz Music.
We met in school actually, over ten years ago,
yeah it was at--
- IAR--
- IAR--
- Institute of Audio Research.
I sat next to the smartest guy in class.
First artist we worked with was 50 Cent
while we was in school.
It was surreal.
- Yeah.
- [Buda] To actually experience that
while we was in school was definitely like
a dream come true.
- And that was like our first placement ever.
- Yeah.
Right then and there, we new we was supposed to be a duo.
Some of my favorite memories from Freestyle
Friday just growing up are
leaving school and just running home
to catch some of these classic battles
from like Jin to Posta Boy, O.M.P.,
Fred, I mean I feel like the BET Freestyle Friday
brand has so many dope artists.
- A lot of the hot rappers that are out now,
the first time we ever seen them was on Freestyle Friday.
- It was like a mini pay per view
for broadcast television every Friday.
We picked the beats for East City I feel
like it was more of like a vibe
in how we would capture if we was
in that actual city creating.
- The music that's coming out of the town--
- Right, out of the region,
ever city got it's own spice,
so like depending on what city we
was producing for, we would definitely
try to add that element that we
was inspired by,
and all that, you and these cities
that BET picked was a lot
of talent, so each beat has to be
completely different.
- What was it about the New York cipher?
What was it about these beats that you felt
like these are the ones for the New York artists,
talk to me?
- Man, well based on the region,
you know, we had to make sure to provide
that essence and like that gritty sound--
- Absolutely--
- Especially coming from New York,
you know you definitely gotta have that
bottom to it so that was the whole vibe with it.
- Definitely went aggressive on the beats, so.
- Went aggressive?
- Yeah.
- That was a look at our Freestyle Friday
resident producers, Buda and Grandz
who laced us with three tracks
for our New York MCs to spit on
throughout the competition.
A lot of artists that we know and love
started out as battle rappers,
Meek Mill, Eminem and Jay-Z just to name a few.
Now let's check out some of my favorite MCs
who showed up and showed out at the New York
City addition of Freestyle Friday.

- Throughout today's livestream,
30 MCs are going to step up to the mic
to deliver their hottest freestyles.
Plus, immediately following today's
livestream event, DJs across the nation
will select one person who will make it
to the final battle live at the BET Experience.
Now, whoever wins will be selected to attend
and compete for global bragging rights

- Congratulations to our winning MC
who is advancing to the live battle at the BET Experience.
Now this is just the first of many Freestyle Fridays.
Our next stop is in Toronto,
so if you want to get on the mic,
hit BET's Youtube page
and upload you rappin' an original song
with #FreestyleFridayBET in the title.
The video must use original, unlicensed audio and lyrics.
You don't want to miss this moment to be
a part of BET history.
- I just graduated college.
I went to school out here, St. John's,
so I just graduated last year,
so, you know, I'm just livin' out here.
I moved from Savanna to New York going to school.
People who inspire me are, you know, Nas
and AZ, I love the era, like that mid-90's era.
I know it might sound cliche,
but it just, listening to these guys
and how they use their lyrics, you know,
and their techniques and their breathing patterns,
that always really inspired me to,
you know, want to be able to convey my messages
like that through my music.
- Alright, y'all, it's been a pleasure hanging out
and giving you exclusive highlights from Freestyle Friday.
We have more on the way in the upcoming month
leading to our finale competition at the BET Experience.
So until we meet again, good night.
