Welcome to your week.
Welcome to our fridge.
We are Sorted Food.
Yes, and today we're going to be going
to my house, where Evie is going to show us
how to make an apple pie.
I make a new friend.
He really doesn't.
It's so funny.
Apple pie, family get togethers. Something
that my nan always makes.
And she makes a bloody good apple pie.
And then custard always made by my grandad.
So this should just remind me of all those Christmases,
family get togethers, birthdays.
So what you're saying is you turn up with the chili
and nan and grandad got the apple pie ready.
Yeah.
My mum will have a lasagna going.
Was that a starter?
Yeah.
Welcome to the Spafford's.
I am peeling what must be one season's worth of fruit
off an apple tree.
An orchard of apples.
And then basically we are going to toss that
with a lot of other flavors.
We've got orange zest.
We've got some ginger.
We've got some vanilla and sugar, obviously.
And that's going to form the filling to our pie.
So I've just started that pastry,
which is rubbing cold butter into flour until it looks
like a bread crumb consistency.
Can you do that with your hot little hands?
I have to work quickly and nimbly with my fingers.
Stir through sugar, and then bring it together
with a couple of eggs.
Oops.
Shell.
Fingers together like a paddle and mix it.
Oh, hot little hands.
This is going to be a problem today.
So loads of pastry, but two separate pieces.
One will be the base.
One will be the lid.
Both can be cling filmed and chill up in the fridge.
So Ben's made the pastry, let it chill, been to the pub,
had two gin and tonics, and I'm still peeling apples.
You're doing a great job.
It's a big family apple pie--
It is.
--so it does need a lot of apples.
Lots of apples?
So it's apple, orange, ginger, cinnamon.
Put some vanilla bean paste.
We going to roll some pastry out?
You gonna to get all floury?
It's so small it doesn't even do up the back.
No.
You can't blame that on it being small.
There's a pink one here.
All right.
Up onto your step.
Wow.
That's it.
Phhth.
All right.
Do you want to spread it out?
That's it.
Yeah.
Go, go, go.
Go, go, go, go, go, go and back.
Go, go go, go, go, go.
You're better than Daddy's friend Barry.
Remember Barry?
Yeah.
He's silly, isn't he?
Yeah.
Roll it up.
Want to take some?
OK.
Now you know how well you did that rolling out before?
We've got to do it again.
We now need a lid.
Ready?
Do you want to start it again?
He-ya.
Whoa.
Boy you're strong.
Go, go, go, go, go.
I wonder if she's looking for a job.
What we've got is a little bit of egg white glue.
Does it fit?
Yeah.
Fist bump.
Wow.
Look at this pie that you've made.
Here's your brush.
Blll.
Great.
Do you want to paint that?
What's the best thing you've painted at nursery?
Uncle Ben's not her friend yet.
She's like her father, selective hearing.
I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that.
50 minutes in an oven.
And then you can have apple pie for your tea.
Evie good job.
High five.
Evie high five.
Fist pump.
Can I get a high five?
Yeah!
Guess who's daddy's little girl?
I'm clearly not favorite when it comes to pastries.
I'm going to knock up a custard.
Warm up double cream with vanilla bean paste
and then whisk that into egg yolks with caster sugar.
Ready, steady, up.
There you go.
Bye Evie.
This is great.
Because all of those apple juices cooked down into it,
you get that whole kind of like even the pastry
takes on that apple flavor.
Obviously I've got the memories of the tradition
as it was when I was growing up.
And now I've got an opportunity to pass that down to her
and get her involved.
I've finished my pie, so the questions are coming out.
OK.
The answer is not allowed to be steak.
What is the food ingredient that is
a must have and always in your fridge?
Chorizo.
And it lasts a lot longer.
Because it lasts longer and you can put it
in lot's of different stuff, whether it's pastas,
whether it's--
He'll put it in everything.
I do.
I do put it in everything.
What movie meal scene is your favorite and why?
OK.
One that comes to the--
Sorry.
What was the--
The LOL dolls are weeing in the bath.
The one that comes to the front of my mind,
purely because we watch it on pretty much a weekly basis
at the moment with her, Mrs. Doubtfire in the restaurant
where Robin Williams keeps skipping in
between being like the dad and being Mrs. Doubtfire.
And, yeah I, just think that--
End-to-end as a scene is hilarious.
Correct.
Such a great film.
It's a really good film.
This takes some thinking about.
If you were to travel the world blindfolded
with only one person to describe everything to you,
who would that one person be?
I reckon you could go in two directions with this.
So, I reckon, one is you go down the film director route
because their job is to show you everything in their world,
but my answer is going to have to be Sir David Attenborough.
If he could narrate your world--
Imagine going around the world--
--adventure.
Evie agrees.
Evie agrees.
I've only ever heard him narrate wildlife stuff,
but if you imagine him reading out the departure
boards at an airport, like that kind of stuff, it's like--
just everything about it would just be epic.
The bus is late.
Awwww...almost makes you want to have kids doesn't it?
NOPE
Now you might remember end of last year we did a Kickstarter for Desserts in Duvets
and it went unbelievable but not all of you managed to get a copy
awwww
But because we are lovely people we have done a run of 300 copies
so that you can get hold of one right now!
And if you're a member of the book club or digital club you get a whopping discount on them
Open it up, show them what's in it
Look at that
Recipes
Don't screen grab any of those, that's cheating. Buy it.
Right, before we go Mike wants to tell you about his favourite format that we're launching on Sunday
Yes! Level Up. But it's Level Up 2.0 so it's even better than the original Level Up
and it's got loads and loads of retro video game hints in it. See you make sure you stay tuned!!
Such a geek.
