Splatoon is about to get even more awesome, I wanna talk about that and everything but…
you know how we do things here, let's go even deeper than that.
Get it…
Deep…
Octolings live underground---ah forget it!
You guys don't appreciate my comedic genius...
I don't talk about Splatoon that often on this channel.
In fact, I don't think I've talked about Splatoon for nearly A YEAR that's a borderline
CRIME because I LOVE that game.
It's proof that despite what a lot of detractors say, Nintendo can have a few developers lock
themselves in a room for 11 months and come out with something entirely new and entirely
charming.
They get a lot of flak for being same-y (from us included) & for me, Splatoon is the reason
why.
My most hyped announcement to come out of E3 the year the original Splatoon came out
was that Nintendo planned to maintain the program that spawned the original game.
Fast forward to now, we haven't really seen anything that has come out of that initiative.
That's kind of a bummer, BUT, not all is lost because we're still getting plenty
of exciting content from that team by way of Splatoon 2's upcoming Octo Expansion.
Now, none of this is to say I've grown bored in any way of the content available in Splatoon
2, in fact, they've been pretty consistently adding new things to the game before I'm
really given the chance to fully consume the things they added leading up to the next thing.
I
Since the days of the original game, I've been a huge advocate in favor of people experiencing
the single player campaigns of the Splatoon games before really diving into the multiplayer.
It really puts the mechanics into perspective and helps you understand the maneuverability
the Inklings have, get a basic understanding of how the different weapons work, some of
the stage mechanics that you may see in online matches.
Beyond that, it further fleshes out the world and establishes themes like the Inklings love
of trends, fashion, music, all of that good stuff.
& it's a conduit for the lore.
My only gripe being that we're never given enough to really push the potential of these
mechanics or the world building.
I've always lamented the limited approach to single player.
So, OF COURSE, as you could imagine, I was excited to see the announcement for Octo Expansion,
mostly because I really want to experience the mini challenge approach to the levels.
I think it has the potential to make me an even better player than the main single player
content because it's less worried about a player becoming frustrated, something I
think is backed up by the inclusion of Pearl and Marina who will give the ability to skip
levels that are giving you a hard time.
In an interview with IGN, Splatoon 2's producer Hisashi Nogami talked a lot about how: rather
than being an A to B affair, the new campaign will task us with new kinds of challenges
that encourage different kinds of play as well as giving us more opportunities to put
different kinds of weapons that you may not typically take advantage of to the test.
& that's not exclusive to players either.
Enemies also have access to more weapons and specials than they do in the main story content.
The overall vibe I'm getting from the levels so far is that they are meant for intermediate
player that want to further hone their skills further after playing through the campaign.
It's a lot more brutal than the campaign it seems though.
Each mission costs a set amount of points, points that will afford you 3 lives.
If you lose all three lives, you'll be able to continue from the last checkpoint by paying
more points, restart the level, which is fortunately free, skip the level like I mentioned before,
or abandon the level and return to the subway.
Beyond all of that gameplay stuff we're given a small amount of details for the story
in the expansion being that you play as a Octoling girl (or boy) who wakes up in this
underground subway system and apparently has amnesia?
Tupac Marina is there, Biggie Pearl is there.
It's a great time.
That's about all we know outside of a few other new characters that presumably help
you in one way or another, but, until we know more for sure, they're not really worth
talking about right now.
What IS worth talking about is what I think this SHOULD mean for the series moving forward,
and where I think they should take it AFTER this.
I think the Octo expansion is a great start for every reason I mentioned, but it really
doesn't do much to TRULY fix any of the major problems that I, and many other people
have with Splatoon in its current state.
Problems I'm not sure we could reasonably expect to be solved in this expansion or any
potential future expansion of Splatoon 2.
For many of these changes, we'll likely need a Splatoon 3, which, I know is a ways
off, but, speculation is fun so don't bother leaving any of those party pooper comments.
But, first, before I get into the negative stuff, let's just talk about some cool changes
that would be fun to see.
Not necessarily anything we NEED Splatoon's world should be explored further in more ways
than just these piece meal smaller scaled stories.
I think the world of Splatoon could stand to be more reminiscent of a traditional Nintendo
single player experience.
The story doesn't need to be super complex, in fact, in a way I think they should simplify
what's already there.
Currently, there's a bit of an Overwatch vibe to how the Splatoon lore is explored.
Only the people that really look are aware of a lot of the storytelling in Splatoon,
which, to a point can be cool, but I also think it wastes the potential of these characters
and this world.
We should have a plot that dives deeper into the day to day of Inklings as a whole.
Give us backstory on where a lot of the trends in the world come from.
Why do Inklings and Octolings get stuck in these distinct 90s trends?
Could we potentially see them explore different eras?
Or other facets of the 90s?
Like I mentioned a bit earlier, we're seeing a heavy hip hop influence Show us why Turf
Wars are important?
How do the other game types factor into this world?
What other obstacles aside from a kidnapped ally can we be presented with that would be
the catalyst to a new adventure?
In other words, I don't think we ALWAYS need to be agents.
Maybe we can explore the idea of the research lab being a thing in the Splatoon world?
Maybe Inklings and Octarians alike revolt against us for medaling.
Or maybe there's some bigger threat that brings Inklings & Octarians like another animal
family.
A family that could potentially bring with them interesting game mechanics to challenge
us as players.
& that's another thing, we should REALLY be doubling down on really exploring the abilities
Inklings have at there disposal.
Splatoon 2 definitely takes it to the next level in the final sector of the campaign,
but, I think there's a lot more potential in the mechanics we have.
Enough to even justify a 10 to 15 hour long campaign.
What if that campaign is also playable with a friend through online play or local wireless?
What kind of levels could we get if we have another Inkling or Octoling by our side?
Salmon Run is flirting with the idea of co-op, let's go all in and make it a key mechanic
in the future.
I'd even sacrifice one full fledged Nintendo styled single player in favor of 2 campaigns
in the vein of Splatoon 1 & 2 but with one of them being specifically designed to be
played with another player playing alongside you.
ALSO, why not make Octolings play slightly differently from Inklings in some way?
It can be like, A Way Out, but, with better gameplay, and a less serious story….
Really the only way it'd be like A Way Out is in the sense that it's heavily dependent
on cooperative gameplay… which isn't even unique to A Way Out…
So…
Disregard that, I guess?
Give them different advantages and disadvantage to make them more than cosmetically separate.
Of course, they shouldn't, I'd even go as far as to say they CAN'T do that with
the Octo Expansion, because they'd be putting characters with a different play style behind
a paywall, but, new ways to play are fair game in a sequel.
Beyond that, let's see more game types in the vein of Salmon Run.
The inclusion of that mode is easily my favorite new addition as I've always been really
into cooperative gameplay.
Creating a cooperative Boss Rush game, or a cooperative puzzle solving game type, or
something along those lines I think could talk Salmon Run to the next level.
While they're implementing game types, what would free for all, or different sized team
comps be like?
Or an elimination mode of some kind?
I know as well as anybody else that loves Splatoon that the game isn't about kill
or be killed 9 times out of 10 like most other shooters, but, at the end of the day, it's
still a shooter, it wouldn't hurt to include some traditional shooter staples.
That way they may attract an even bigger player base as well as having even more things to
play off of to make those modes unique to Splatoon in one way or another.
& unfortunately, this is where we transition into the bad.
Nintendo needs to let go of the reigns a bit on their whole curated experience schtick
when it comes to Splatoon.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think that approach is ALL bad like a lot of people do.
I'm all for the weapon and stage drip feed.
I think eventizing things like that adds a lot to the experience, but I can see people's
frustration with the headache that is customizing how you play beyond that.
People want to be able to play Turf War with their friends on the same time against random
players, it's currently a dice roll, you can't even join ranked games at all in ranked
modes.
Which, plays into another popular gripe.
Playing ranked with friends is a MAJOR pain.
There are a few hurdles that you need to clear to make playing with friends a possibility.
First, you need to get to level 10.
This, I partially understand, you should be at a certain skill level before jumping into
Ranked battles,
BUT, I think you should be able to gain experience in modes outside of turf war.
This way you can be working toward that while naturally experiencing the game in the way
you want without it being a grind…
Unless you're already experienced of course, but, that's a whole other can of worms that
would ultimately require Turf Wars to be skill based to a degree to fully address.
Which, I don't think they should do.
ANYWAY, after getting to level 10 you're required to get to a B- in a game type THEN
you unlock league battle.
All of your friends need to go through this process.
I don't think they should be this strict.
Many people wouldn't even touch Splatoon if it weren't for their friends, limiting
what multiplayer modes they can play together is a mistake I think they should fix.
Alongside the fact that you can't spectate when waiting to join a lobby, the fact that
you need a full group of friends on the same splat fest team to play together there, or
any of the problems that people have with Nintendo's current online infrastructure
and voice chat and what not.
A fair amount of that could be fixed in Splatoon 2.
ALL of that stuff should be a fixed in Splatoon 3.
BUT, those are MY thoughts what do YOU think?
Are you excited for the Octo Expansion?
Are there any changes you hope to see made to Splatoon in the furture?
