Some long for the runners-up spot …
"Our ambition continues to be to end up as high up the table as possible. We're second and we want to stay
there. I'm not lying when I say we really want to be second. It's not the same being second
as it is being third"
Others, begin to see Real Betis competing in Europe…
"We're riding high coming into the final stage of the championship. We're very hopeful of taking a European
spot. Let's see if we're capable of holding out until the end"
Next Sunday, at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, Atletico Madrid and Betis will face up to each other in
Matchday 34's big game.
A thrilling encounter between two teams who have really found their form in the final stages of the championship
and who both want to edge ever nearer their respective targets for the season.
Los Colchoneros have an impressive home record in their favour.
Simeone's side have still not lost in the Metropolitano in all the championship,
and one of their objectives must be to finish their first season at their new stadium unbeaten in LaLiga.
Their tremendous home form owes much of its success to some superb defensive performances.
Proof of which is the fact that Atletico have kept a clean sheet for 7 home games in a row.
The last goal they conceded was scored by Portu more than 3 months ago.
Since then, Jan Oblak has been impregnable at the Metropolitano.
It's been 650 minutes since the opposition managed to put the ball past him at the Madrid fortress.
But if there is one team right now that seem up to challenging Atletico's unbeaten home record,
it's Quique Setien's Betis.
A team that's won seven of its last nine away league games.
They came away 1-0 winners from the Montilivi last weekend, thanks to a goal from Loren Moron,
a player who's made a great impact in this season's LaLiga.
Amongst the many ins-and-outs, Lucas Hernandez is back with Atletico after serving a suspension
and Javi Garcia returns to the Betis ranks.
Diego Costa was injured in his side's Europa League game,
and with the Arsenal match just round the corner, he will almost certainly not be part of the red-and-whites
starting line-up.
As for the precedents, results have clearly gone in Atletico's favour in recent times.
Betis haven't beaten the Madrid outfit for 6 years.
Their last success was in December 2011 when Gregorio Manzano was the man in charge
in los colchonero's dugout.
Since then, and with Simeone at the helm, the teams have met 12 times:
three draws and nine wins for Atletico,
including their 1-0 victory earlier this season, when a goal from Saul
at the Benito Villamarin determined the outcome.
Betis are firing on all cylinders at the moment and will be hoping to end their poor run against the Madrid outfit.
It's an encounter which provides another opportunity for the Atletico fans to bid farewell to Fernando Torres
and the stand out game on Matchday 34 of LaLiga Santander.
