hey welcome to monster transmission you're in Curts corner we'll go over some really
important items that normally plague the 4l60e with problems there's three
different areas of the transmission they're very common to be bad on this
particular unit now this is a 4L60e 1 piece there's also a 4l60 two-piece and
a 65 and 70 which have the same components and have the same issues so
first we're going to take this unit apart to a diagnosis exactly what the
problem is so the first problem we look at is the 1870 code for the TCC that's
in the valve body so we're gonna take the pan off on the filter and get right
into the valve body so obviously we remove the pan bolts or 16 pan bolts
they were thirteen millimeter head and make sure you put these bolts in one
place because you will be using them to put this unit back together
remove the pan pan gasket you need to remove the filter then there's a ray of
bolts you do need to remove all these bolts to get to the valve body itself so
you remove all the solenoid Clips do that carefully if you're going to reuse
this harness
now there's ten millimeter bolts remove the 10 millimeter bolts through all
three different length bolts taller ones to go for the pressure manifold switch
which are three and then there's three bolts that have a eight millimeter or
5/16 head you need remove those it's also a tensioner here it on the valve
body you remove that then there are check balls that's set in the valve body
you have to check the reprogramming kit or when you rebuild to put the check
balls back in the correct position you move the manual valve linkage to expose
the valve body we're going to work in this area here
you remove this clip to work on this valve train and there's two remedies for
this 1870 code one is so next sells a kit a reaming toolkit where you actually
remount drill out the bore of the valve body to oversize it because the bore the
valve body itself is worn out is leaking oil pressure which will cause the
three-four clutch pack to burn off so once you bore it to a larger size this
sonís will give you an oversize valve and sleeve which will fit in that bore
and eliminate that problem also in some of the premium kits you'll come with a
enhanced spring this spring will actually go in and block this valve
which will also cure the problem because the valve will not move therefore will
not leak the oil and cause the 1870 slip code so there's two remedies for fixing
that problem to cure the 3/4 valve train okay so you're going to remove this
valve remove the clip and the plug and slide the valve out and the spring and
you're going to replace this spring with the updated spring and simply reinstall
okay if we redress this problem with the TCC code now we're going to go further
into unit to see what else we'll call to 3/4 to burn up so we're gonna go and
we're gonna check the piston the four piston in the forward drum before you
can remove will remove the pump you must remove the TCC solenoid it has two 10mm
Boult camera then removed the seven thirteen millimeter head pump bolts if
you don't have a pump puller which mounts on the side of the casting and
lifts the pump off you can gently pry between the forward drum or the director
arm and the actual pump housing itself
slice the top off and before you can remove the drums you must release the
tension of the band here's the band this is the forward drum so we have to
disassemble the forward drum to check out the clutch packs what's the problem
remove the snap ring you got the burnt three four clutches so now we need to
remove the next snap ring to take off the forward clutch pack and pull the
Spragg assembly out this will expose the center part here with a sprig spring
assembly you must remove the spring assembly to take two Pistons out the
molded pistons to remove the snap ring spring assembly this is all the pistons
and the early units that had aluminum pistons of rubber seals the later units
had molded Pistons with just means it's molded into the piston itself and this
is our culprit which is the the forward piston the seal the outside the inside
seal can get very hard even when the vehicle warms up these seals instead of
sealing the oil will leak past this piston and cause the clutch pack not
to apply fully so it's basically like riding a clutch on a stick shift it'll
burn the clutches right out which is what happened to this unit this piston
is hard and it has to be replaced so you replace it with a new piston and new
clutch pack and that will fix the problem in this unit as far as 3/4 the
other common problem that happens in the 460 E is the Sun shell the sun shell is
notorious for breaking in there anywhere from a 700
it 4L60/65 they all have the same type of son shout so we're gonna take
the unit further down to inspect the son shell now there is a snap ring in the
center here riding on the shaft itself you must remove that snap ring so we can
pull out the planetaries on that shell because you remove that snap ring
in the center and then you can pull the planetary system out there's a snap ring
and this is the front planetary assembly and it'll expose the sun shell and you
can see by this one what happened is exactly that the sun shell is completely
sheared off so this was basically going down the road and suddenly lost all
forward gears and that's because this sun shell the factory son shell broke
off right here and the other half of the gear is in the rear planetary the other
half of the year stuck on this drive gear so and this is the son shell gear
rides on this side of the sun shell and this rides in the rear planetary so that
basically stripped off which is a very common problem the other problem that
can occur if it doesn't break off they're notorious for stripping off so
this gear has nothing there's no teeth to hold on to that's another common
problem with a sun shell so then aftermarket son shell heavy-duty
sun shell these teeth this housing is a little thicker the teeth are hardened
say they won't strip this also has a full reinforced weld bead all the way
around not to strip off like this one did there's a much enhanced son shell
that we put on our units to prevent exactly this problem so if you're going
down the road and you lost all forward gears and the engine is revving up into
the most common problem with fall sixty is this sun shell will break off if you
have an 1870 check engine light then the problem is used to the TCC valve if you
lost three for most like you have a hard piston the vehicle has a lot of mileage
on it and this piston become hard and lease the oil which burnt the clutch is
up so that pretty much diagnoses the most common problems with a 4l60e/65e
