Sports cars have always been objects of desire,
have not they?
If I ask you to name some of the
most beautiful sports in the world
surely you would name names like Ferrari
Porsche, Mustang, Lamborghini
or several other machines on wheels
endowed with incomparable beauty.
What about Brazilian sports cars
could you describe me any?
Stop !!
Stop there, I'm not talking about non-sticker sports...
No !!!
By the way,
this style has been getting here in Brazil in recent times.
To help you answer this question
let's go back to the early 1970s.
At that time we did not have much choice of sports cars
especially after the military regime suspended imports.
The most common sports in Brazil
were the already outdated Karmann Ghia,
launched by VW in 1962
and the Karmann Ghia TC,
a more modern version of the classic
in an attempt to keep the model alive
in front of our other sports option:
the Puma
produced at the time by Puma Vehicles and Motors
Our Puma was at its peak
it was the sport of the moment
and it became a true dream of consumption among the young...
That was when all this success of Puma
caught the attention of Volkswagen of Brazil
who decided to participate in this promising market
launching a new car
with a bold project
to face the Puma.
Originally baptized Project X,
Volkswagen's new sport car
was born exclusively from our artboards
to become the first fully designed car in Brazil,
100% national ...
Get ready to travel through the trajectory
of a Brazilian sports car
created by Brazilians from Volkswagen do Brasil.
Introducing,
the beautiful and legendary
Volkswagen SP2 !!
The Birth of a Legend
Although it was presented to the public in March 1971
during a German industry fair in São Paulo
still as Project X
it was only officially launched in 1972
now called SP
a tribute to the city of São Paulo
where the car was designed,
although there are controversies
which point out that its name
would be the acronym for
"Sport Prototype" or "Special Project"
As the wave of sports cars were on the rise
there are reports that in the first week
there were riots at the dealers to get to know the new car...
They even said that they had a dealer
needing to call the police
because it was past ten o'clock pm
and people did not leave the Volkswagen SP.
And all this admiration was not no reasons
SP's engaging design
modern and dashing,
has always been its strong point.
So much so that it was hardly launched
and was soon elected by the German magazine Hobby
the most beautiful Volkswagen
ever made and to this day.
There was even an appeal from the overseas market
for the German Volkswagen
to produce the model on a world scale.
Let's follow the launch commercial:
Volkswagen SP1
and Volkswagen SP2
The young Brazilian performance.
Volkswagen SP1 and SP2
Its name is actually Volkswagen SP
and was released in two versions:
the SP1 version, entry, cheaper and more basic
and the SP2 version
with a better finish and a little more powerful.
But in the end
the model eventually became known
as Volkswagen SP2.
Let me explain:
Mounted on the chassis of the Volkswagen Variant
both models were practically the same.
The big difference was in the powertrain:
the SP1 received
the 65-horsepower 1.6-liter Variant boxer engine
the famous "ox lying down"
and ended up earning the nickname
"No Power"
due to the letters of its name
and lack of power for a sports car.
But SP1 did not emplacing
Its low performance caused consumers to prefer SP2
failing to produce in 1973
with only 88 units sold.
Who fell into the grace of the public
was the famous SP2 version.
It received an air-cooled boxer engine
of 1.7 liters, unpublished in Brazil.
It was powered by double carburetion
and the result was 75 horsepower
and a speed that according to VW reached 160 km / h.
SP2 - A Outstanding Volkswagen
Who really became famous was SP2.
In its first year 3,000 units were sold.
To get an idea,
The Puma,
its main competitor
sold only 400 units in the same period.
In addition to the lines that favored aerodynamics,
the SP2 called attention to its height
in relation to the ground:
only 11.5 cm
which made it the lowest national series car
ever produced in the country.
The SP2 also had many unusual details for the time
such as red reflective side bezels,
rubber bumper and
windscreen wipers with pantograph rods.
The wheels were magnesium rim 14
with Pirelli radial tire
model Cinturato 185x14
suitable for sports cars.
Stability was guaranteed
with hydraulic disc brakes at the front
and drum at the rear,
double-circuit for added safety.
Impossible was to contemplate its rear lines
and not remember the famous Porsche 911 ...
New in Color Only
Since it was released in 72
VW was only concerned with offering new colors to SP2.
In fact, color options are what
never missing out on the Volkswagen sports car.
there were more than 40 colors available
for the consumer to choose.
12 of which were metallic.
SP2 was a complete car since birth.
In addition to the bold design
its interior bore the attributes of a true sports car.
Entering SP2 required a certain juggling
with every good sport.
The driving position
required fully stretched legs and arms
and the seats
were "glued" to the floor.
The seats were long,
comfortable, and covered in leather.
The interior of SP2 was rich in detail
and comfortably accommodated two people.
The dashboard,
made of deformable plastic for in case of accident,
was supercomplete,
Trip instruments like speedometer,
account turns, fuel marker, clock, ammeter and thermometer.
The interior of SP2 also offered
some pampering to consumers.
It had a built-in cigarette lighter,
ventilation and reading lights on the doors.
And to give a special touch,
the car came with an excellent three-spoke sports steering wheel Walrood.
The Early End of SP2
Despite good sales in its first year of manufacturing,
once again the criticism has weakened
the commercialization of SP2.
As with the Karmann Ghia
Volkswagen again
made the same mistake with SP2:
the low performance of the engine
drove our sporting car to lose the battle
against its strong competitor Puma.
Even though both had a similar engine
vthe big difference
was that the Puma had a fiberglass body
while the SP2 used the traditional steel
which made its 1.7 engine
look ugly in drag
pickup and final speed for the Puma GT.
In addition to the Puma GT,
new competitors such as Chevrolet Opala SS
and Ford Maverick
helped speed-lovers turn off their sights of SP2.
In order to save our Brazilian sports car
Volkswagen even considered the launch of
the SP3 version.
which would use the Passat TS water-cooled front 1.8 engine,
but due to the high cost of its production,
the project did not leave the paper.
SP2 continued in the production line of Volks
until February of 1976
being withdrawn from the market
early with only 5 years of manufacture
and with little more than 10 thousand units commercialized.
SP2 has been exported to other countries
such as Germany
, which maintains two copies at its museum in Wolfsburg.
Despite the sales flop,
SP2 has charmed the world
with the beauty of its design
and today is considered one of the rarest
and most valued automobiles produced
by the national industry.
SP2 has become a privilege for its collectors,
turned up toy of the series Hot Wheels,
and its design
is constantly updated by designers
who dream of seeing a new SP2
running through Brazilian streets,
but now,
with much more power, of course!
A tribute to our great SP2. A 100% Brazilian sports car !!!
