Granny's AM Meditations - #7 Just Breathe - Duration: 5:49.

Hello InnerTubers,

How about another Morning Meditation?

Quick!

One quick breath. [inhale] [exhale]

[upbeat intro music]

Well, now, after a little bit of amped up music,

are you ready to breathe?

'Cuz that's what this one is all about.

Breathing will just center you, my friends.

I'm telling you the fuckin' truth.

I'm gonna say this early in the video – really early so you don't forget and I don't

forget – share the video – share the video with everybody because everybody needs to

be able to breathe.

Yeah. That shit's important.

It's not hippie heebie jeebie stuff.

It's just good common sense.

I'm gonna give you an example, okay?

A week or so ago, my plate was so fucking full I didn't know where to start.

I had website work to do.

I had book work to do.

I had some Cameos I needed to finish.

I needed to write a speech.

I needed to help somebody with some editing.

And, I needed to eat.

And, I needed to do laundry.

And, I needed to go to the grocery store.

And [frantic mumbles]! [exhales]

You get it?

Well, I had to do this Cameo for this lady

and she was talking about how she had so much

on her plate.

DUHHHH.

Life imitating art, right?

So, I realized … [inhales]

that what I needed to do … [exhales]

was take a breath.

So, what I did is I set my phone

for the hour on the hour –

actually, I set it for 59 minutes at a time.

And then I would stop what I was doing,

close my eyes for just 2 or 3 seconds

[inhales] ... [exhales]

And sometimes the very first deep breath was all I really needed to do

to give myself permission

to take another couple of really deep breaths.

Big in [inhales]

hold it

[exhales]

gentle exhale.

So, by the time I finished that and reset my phone for the next 59 minutes, now maybe

a little more than an hour had gone by.

It was so refreshing, and so renewing.

Fuck.

I mean I felt like a brand new woman.

As brand new as one can be at my age.

But, it fucking worked!

Hoh Hoh!

It worked so mega-TITS good,

I actually had managed to center myself.

And then I wrote a list.

I wrote a list of the shit I needed to do

instead of trying to carry it up here in my head.

Because, well, you know, there's just so much shit up there,

I couldn't carry it all.

But there's an odd satisfaction in writing a list and scratching that shit off –

one at a time.

[inhales] ... [exhales]

And sometimes I was able to do 2 things

in between those 59-minute breaks.

Try it.

Just breathe, fuckers.

Just breathe.

If you need some more really good advice,

why you check out the rest of the morning meditations.

Check out the bedtime meditations.

And, if you start to get hungry, well check out the shit that I cook.

Because it's all yummy.

You love me, right?

You love me because I give you really solid advice

and I never bullshit you, because,

what the sense is that, right?

You would pick up on it in a nanosecond.

'Cuz you're smart little fuckers.

I know you are.

There you go.

Breathe.

And if you can't remember to breathe,

set your fuckin' alarm clock.Or a timer.

Or whatever the hell works.

Maybe drink a lot of water and you have to go to the bathroom,

so that's your breathing (reminder)?

You know,

you can breathe and pee at the same time.

That's all I really wanna tell you.

Just breathe, fuckers.

[inhales] ... [exhales]

And gentle.

It doesn't need to be hard work.

Just one deep breath.

[ahhhh] Okay.

If you wanna throw in some shoulder rolls,

forward and backwards, you go for it.

Because I love you.

[blows kiss]

Granny loves you.

Oh, and be sure and check out the cookbook, okay?

And the new website.

And, if you want me to do a Cameo for you,

I promise you I'll put it on my list.

I love you. I really do.

Every one of you.

Oh, Oh!

And for fuck's sake, I almost forgot.

Share. Share

Yeah. Share.

Trump Is Now DENYING That 3,000 Puerto Ricans Died In Hurricane Maria - Duration: 4:08.

It almost seems impossible that Donald Trump could sink any lower than he already has on

Twitter with insulting people's intelligence, going after their personal appearances, things

like that, but this morning he actually managed to outdo himself when he said one of the most

horrid and disgusting things that he has ever said since become President of the United

States.

Here it is, spread out over two tweets.

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico.

When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths.

As time went by it did not go up by much.

Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000..."

".....This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I

was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico.

If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list.

Bad politics.

I love Puerto Rico!"

So Donald Trump is telling us that his negligence, the callous attitude toward those American

citizens in Puerto Rico, they're not actually dead.

They didn't die.

It wasn't storm related if they did die.

I'm sure that's consolation to all the people who buried their 2,975 relatives, loved ones,

friends, families, whatever.

Maybe they can just dig them up now because apparently they didn't die.

I guess they should go check on them.

It's true that 3,000 people didn't die in the storm, they died from what happened after

the storm.

And what happened after the storm is 100 percent Donald Trump's fault.

As the leader of the Federal Government, which makes him of government organizations like

FEMA, whose job it is to make sure we have proper disaster responses in areas like Puerto

Rico, yeah that is your fault.

They didn't have clean water, they had water filled with bacteria.

They didn't have proper infrastructure in place, and yes that is the responsibility

of the U.S.

Government to make sure that that can happen.

Hospitals were overloaded.

People who had regular illnesses could not get in because of all the people injured from

the hurricane.

Any death like that is hurricane related.

'Cause it would not have happened had the hurricane not come to the island.

The President right now is trying to deny reality and not just deny that it exists,

but also blame Democrats for what is allegedly a lie that almost 3,000 people died.

The man is absolutely insane, as is anyone out there defending anything that he says.

You're insane.

You are and so is this man.

He is not fit to be the President of the United States, not by a long shot.

This tweet is absolutely abhorrent.

Especially as we have a massive hurricane bearing down on the United States right now

and the people in that path of that storm need to understand that once the wind goes

away, once the flood waters recede, which could take weeks, President Trump, FEMA, all

the people that you think are going to come help you, they won't be there.

You're gonna have to rely on aid and generosity from your fellow American citizens.

And as for the claim that Donald Trump helped raise billions of dollars for Puerto Rico,

that is an outright lie.

There is no evidence whatsoever to back that up.

There are no campaign speeches, there were no rallies, there were no fundraisers, there

were no tweets, there is nothing to indicate that this man did anything to raise any personal

money or get people to help donate to Puerto Rico.

He is an absolute liar, he is a con man, and at this point it's pretty safe to say that

this man is absolutely insane.

How to Help a Friend Struggling with Depression - Duration: 4:52.

- Hello, hello, hello my friends!

Kaitlyn here!

And let's talk a little bit about mental health this week!

Usually we talk about managing our personal mental health,

but what if you know someone

who's struggling with depression or another mental illness?

(upbeat electronic music)

So this is another subscriber question

and it comes from Ed and he asks:

How do you cope

when someone in your family is suffering from depression?

I have a family member who has depression

and it got really bad last year.

I didn't know what to do

and everything I did felt inadequate.

It even got to the point

where I felt like the depression was infecting me.

So what advice would you give people

who are trying to help someone who has depression?

Oh man, I am sorry that your family member

is going through a mental health struggle right now,

but I can't commend you enough

for trying to be there for them.

So the first thing you've gotta recognize

is that you are not a therapist or psychiatrist.

You're not professionally trained

to help someone deal with their mental illness.

And that's okay!

That's not your job.

It's 100% their job

to seek the appropriate help that they need to get better.

Sometimes they're able to do it.

And sometimes it's like pulling teeth

and it might take years

before they're really able to buckle down and do it.

But all you can do

is encourage them to seek professional help,

not try to be their personal therapist.

I have done that, and I know that it does not work.

And it's a really easy trap to fall into

especially if you're dealing with someone

who isn't officially diagnosed

and maybe doesn't want to get help for whatever reason.

It leads to emotional abuse and codependency

and just really bad situations.

Now, maybe this person is seeking help,

but you still feel like you need to do something for them.

So as someone who's dealt with depression for years,

it's very common to either have friends

who kind of distance themself from you

because they don't quite know how to help

or they don't know how to deal

with the struggles that you're going through.

Or they're so empathetic,

that it really takes a toll on them worrying about you

and wanting to find some way to fix your problems.

I get both of those points of view.

And most of the time we talk about the former on my channel

because I want to help destigmatize mental health.

And part of that is helping people

not be afraid of their friends or family members

if they have a mental illness,

because that's actually

when they need their support the most.

But there's also the opposite side of that

which it sounds like Ed is residing in.

And that's when you can really suffer

from emotional burnout.

This is a problem among caregivers of all kinds,

whether professional or not.

We try to help someone else who's struggling,

a lot of times we forget to take care of ourselves.

Have you ever heard the airplane metaphor?

So when you're on an airplane

and there's a drop in cabin pressure

and the little yellow oxygen masks drop down,

what does the airline attendant tell you

in the pre-flight safety speech that everyone ignores?

They say to put on your own mask first

before assisting others.

Now, why is that?

Shouldn't you make sure your child

or your elderly seat neighbor has oxygen first?

Because don't they seem like the most susceptible ones

because they need your help?

Yes, but if you don't put on yours first,

you might run out of oxygen,

and then you can't save yourself or anyone else!

This is one of the most common metaphors

when talking about caregiver burnout

because it very succinctly lays out

why self-care is the most important first step

in being a good caregiver.

You just can't help others if you're suffering yourself.

So if you're trying to help someone

through a mental health struggle,

don't forget to take a step back,

assess your own mental health,

and do what you need to do

to make sure that you're mentally sound and happy.

I know this can be extra hard

if you're dealing with a family member who's struggling,

especially if you live with them,

because there's just not enough space

for you to be able step back

and prioritize your own mental health.

And that's really when asking for help probably comes in.

Like talking to your friends and other family members

and be like

"Hey, I'm trying to be supportive for this person,

"but it's really getting to me.

"Could you step up for a little while

"while I work on myself?"

I have had a super hard time

asking for help when I needed it throughout the years,

but trust me, it is much better

than running yourself into the ground

while trying to be everyone's superhero.

Well, there's no easy answer

to helping a friend or family member

through a mental health struggle.

But my best advice is that you can't help anyone

unless you yourself are feeling strong.

And sometimes you're not going to.

But having the foresight

to know that you need to step back when that happens

is going to be a lifesaver.

For the question today, what's been your experience

helping a friend or family member

dealing with a mental illness?

Or maybe how has someone helped you

if you've been the one in crisis?

Tell me down in the comments!

Plus remember that you can submit your own question or topic

to be featured in the video or blog!

Just click over here

and fill out this super easy form on my website!

And as always you can check me out

on these other social media sites

and if you haven't already,

subscribe and hit the notification bell

so that you know the moment there's a new video!

And I'll see you guys next Thursday!

Bye! (blowing kiss)

One Dev Question with Aaron Gustafson - Will PWA's Replace Native Apps? - Duration: 2:12.

Will PWAs replace native apps?

I'm gonna go down a limb here and say...

..no.

But the caveat is that they will replace

some types of native apps.

So when you're building a native app,

you need to build

usually some sort of API or web service

that that app lives on top of.

And then in a lot of cases you're building

different native apps for different platforms.

So you might have,

you know, an Android app, you might have an iOS app,

you might have desktop apps for Windows,

for Mac OS, what-have-you.

You probably have a web version of that as well.

And if that's the case,

it might make a lot of sense for you to actually

double down on your investment in web

which has a very large community,

a lot of available developers,

a lot of great resources at relatively low cost

and focus your energies there rather than

focusing on building for umpteen different platforms.

Especially if you're providing an experience

that has a lot of parity across all of those platforms.

It may not be worth that additional investment

to focus on specific native apps as well.

And instead, focus on building a great web experience

turning that into a PWA that's then installable

on all those platforms which PWAs are at this point.

So that's kind of one side of it.

The other side of it is: there are going to be

still some apps that will just perform better as native apps.

And this is going to be on a case-by-case basis.

If you need to be closer to the metal on the machine,

then a native app probably makes a lot of sense for you.

If you need to have immediate access

to certain device APIs and stuff like that

that aren't available via web standard interactions

or APIs in JavaScript,

then a native app is going to make more sense to you.

So really it should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

I don't think PWAs are going to replace all native apps,

but I think they're going to replace quite a few

of the sort of most common use cases for native apps.

DeepMind's New AI Helps Diagnosing Eye Conditions - Duration: 3:59.

Dear Fellow Scholars, this is Two Minute Papers with Károly Zsolnai-Fehér.

In this video series, we often see how these amazing new machine learning algorithms can

make our lives easier, and fortunately, some of them are also useful for serious medical

applications.

Specifically, medical imaging.

Medical imaging is commonly used in most healthcare systems where an image of a chosen set of

organs and tissues is made for a doctor to look at and decide whether medical intervention

is required.

The main issue is that the amount of diagnostic images out there in the wild increases at

a staggering pace, and it makes it more and more infeasible for doctors to look at.

But wait a minute, as more and more images are created, this also means that we have

more training data for machine learning algorithms, so at the same time as human doctors get more

and more swamped, the AI should get better and better over time!

These methods can process orders of magnitude more of these images than humans, and after

that, the final decision is put back into the hands of the doctor, who can now focus

more on the edge cases and prioritize which patients should be seen immediately.

This work from scientists at DeepMind was trained on about 14 thousand optical coherence

tomography scans, this is the OCT label you see on the the left, these images are cross

sections of the human retina.

We first start our with this OCT scan, then, a manual segmentation step follows, where

a doctor marks up this image to show where the most relevant parts, like the retinal

fluids or the elevations of retinal pigments are.

Before we proceed, let's stop here for a moment and look at some images of how the network

can learn from the doctors and reproduce these segmentations by itself.

Look at that!

It's almost pixel perfect!

This looks like science fiction.

Now that we have the segmentation map, it is time to perform classification.

This means that we look at this map and assign a probability to each possible condition that

may be present.

Finally, based on these, a final verdict is made whether the patient needs to be urgently

seen, or just a routine check, or perhaps no check is required.

The algorithm also learns this classification step and creates these verdicts itself.

And of course, the question naturally arises: how accurate is this?

Well, let's look at the confusion matrices!

A confusion matrix shows us how many of the urgent cases were correctly classified as

urgent, and how often it was misclassified as something else and what the something else

was.

The same analysis is performed to all other classes.

Here is how the retina specialist doctors did, and here is how the AI did.

I'll leave it there for a few seconds for you to inspect it.

Really good!

Here is also a different way of aggregating this data - the algorithm did significantly

better than all of the optometrists and matched the performance of the number one retina specialist.

I wouldn't believe any of these results if I didn't see these reports with my own eyes

in the paper.

An additional advantage of this technique is that it works on different kinds of imaging

devices and it is among the first methods that works with 3D data.

Another plus that I really liked is that this was developed as a close collaboration with

a top tier eye hospital in London to make sure that the results are as practical as

possible.

The paper contains a ton of more information, so make sure to have a look!

This was a herculean effort from the side of DeepMind, and the results are truly staggering.

What a time to be alive!

Thanks for watching and for your generous support, and I'll see you next time!

One Dev Question with Aaron Gustafson - Why is Microsoft interested in PWA's? - Duration: 1:32.

Why is Microsoft interested in PWAs?

This is actually an interesting question,

because PWA is in a lot of ways are viewed

as a mobile solution

or at least were initially proposed as a mobile solution

and we're not really in that mobile space much anymore.

So why is Microsoft interested?

Well, the reality is that Microsoft has actually

been very interested in the web for quite a long time.

When Windows 8 came along, we actually enabled developers

to build native apps using web technologies.

And then when Windows 10 came along,

initially we had this thing called hosted web apps

which was kind of the precursor to PWAs within the Microsoft universe

which allowed you to bundle a web app.

So, it's something that existed at a URL on the web

as an installable native app.

And we see that the web is a great distribution mechanism.

It's a great place to invest

in building great experiences

and it's where a lot of the great experiences are being built

and we want to be supportive of that

and we want to create discoverability

for those awesome services that people are building on the web

within the Microsoft Store, within Bing search results

and that sort of thing.

So, ultimately it's about giving exposure

to great software that's being written out there.

Also, being able to provide those great experiences

to our users as well.

It certainly sparked something in me.

I applied for it and I got it.

Social compassion legislation is a great example of that,

It was their idea to bring this bill, SB1249,

the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act to California.

It's huge thanks to them for getting this movement started.

we don't just say that we think this is right
