Youtube daily Sep 23 2018

Right now, we have American cities in the Carolinas that are currently underwater as

a result of Hurricane Florence and the torrential rainfall and sea level rise that came along

with that storm, and it's not getting any better right now.

It will eventually, hopefully, but right now, it's about as bad as we've seen in a long

time, but here's the thing.

These kinds of storms, like Florence, luckily it slowed down to a one before it made landfall,

whereas it could have been making landfall as a four, a very powerful four, but it downgraded,

but this is the new normal.

We saw it last year with Maria, with Harvey, with Irma, now with Florence.

It's not just the new normal.

They're actually getting worse.

Normal's gone, out the window, and that's actually what renowned climate scientist Michael

Mann told people in an op-ed for the Guardian last week, an op-ed you can find the link

to it in the video description here.

I strongly recommend everybody take the time to read through that op-ed, and after you've

read it, I want you to reread the final paragraph of it, because it is in that final paragraph

that Michael Mann tells us the most powerful thing that anyone in the United States can

do to help protect the environment and to help basically do what we can to fight climate

change.

If you don't want to read it yourself, don't worry.

I'll read it to you.

"We must transition away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy even more rapidly,

and we must elect politicians who will support such efforts.

In the US, there's an opportunity to do so in less than two months now in the upcoming

midterm elections, where we must elect politicians who support enlightened policies on energy

and climate, and vote out of office those who don't."

Now, there's a lot of steps that need to be taken in order to reduce our emissions, help

combat climate change effectively, get renewable energy going.

All of those are things that need to be done.

We have to fix factory farming, but nothing, none of that can even be done if we have a

government controlled by people who routinely deny that science is real.

That's the point that Michael Mann is trying to make there.

Dr. Mann understands that.

He knows that as long as we get these politicians who are funded by fossil fuel interests, who

go to work on the Senate floor and throw a snowball and say, "If global warming's a thing,

how is there a snowball here?

Huh?

Think about that."

As long as we have morons like that in the US Senate or the US House, we will never be

able to get any kind of meaningful action on climate change ever, and even Obama.

I mean, look, he did talk a great game on climate change.

He did some great things on it.

He also took a couple steps backwards on the issue.

I mean, oil drilling, offshore drilling in the United States hit a record pace at the

time under his administration, but at least we were also putting other things in place

to help control emissions from power plants, trying to protect waters and streams.

Meanwhile, the current administration, regardless of what you think of Obama, the current administration

run by Republicans is trying to reduce fuel emission standards for automobiles, basically

bringing back the area, era, excuse me, of those gas-guzzling SUVs.

They're trying to make it to where power plants can put more mercury and other toxins into

our air.

They're trying to actually allow more drilling on public and national lands and national

parks.

They sold off those areas, and then the woman who was in charge of selling them off went

to work for one of the oil companies who bought them.

This has to stop.

There is a very clear choice in this year's elections.

You have a party, may not be perfect on the issue of climate, but at least they understand

that climate change is real, that human beings are making it worse, and that we need to do

something about it.

That happens to be the Democratic Party.

Then you have the other party who, a majority of their voters admit climate change is real,

that humans are causing it, and that we should do something, but the party leaders, the elected

officials from that party, keep telling us, "It's not real.

Science doesn't know," or, even worse, "I'm not a scientist, so let's just not pay attention

to it."

Well, how about you listen to the scientists?

Not just the elected officials, but the public.

When we have somebody who knows as much about climate change as Michael Mann telling us

that the biggest thing we can do is vote, that's an idea that you need to keep in your

back pocket at all times, because it's not just about climate change, either.

You want to do something about healthcare?

Vote.

You want to do something about teacher pay increases?

Vote.

You want to do something about anything in this country?

The first and most important step you can do is to make sure that you get out there

and vote, because if you don't, it's not just you that's not voting.

Maybe your friend doesn't vote.

Maybe your neighbor doesn't vote, either.

Maybe the rest of your family's not voting.

Those numbers add up pretty quickly, and we saw back in 2016 what happens when nearly

half of the country decides to stay home and vote.

That's what got us the government that we have today.

TRIGGERED KIDS ON THE INTERNET | My Thoughts On Anti Rex 3000 【#2】 - Duration: 3:23.

You thought it's over, didn't you?

Well, you were wrong.

Anti Rex started attacking me after my 'rant' video and so did his fans.

Now, let me make everything clear

I wasn't the one who started this bullcrap and I don't care if you kill me in a video.

Go ahead, I don't care.

And I won't delete my rant video unless I change my opinion of him.

And in case you're blind or just can't read at the beginning of the video.

There's a disclaimer that says;

This video was made for entertainment only do not witch-hunt people who were shown in this video

That means I did not make the video to bully or hate him.

Now, you probably have seen that juicy killing video he made about me

It gave me a lot of subs and views so... Thanks kid!

He also posted a lot of hateful stuff about me and he made a group dedicated to hating me

It currently has 3 members so..

join if you'd like, it's on Google +

Unfortunately, I couldn't enter because I can't exist here

But the most hilarious thing about this drama is his fans who're telling me to leave him alone

when he's the one whose person offensive stuff about me and tells me to kill myself

I just respond

but I don't take him seriously and you guys shouldn't either

If you're sensitive person and he's hurting you then block him

If he keeps hurting you with his fake accounts

Then tell me and we'll do something about it pm (private message) me on hangouts or Amino and

I'll try my best to help you.

His parents really should monitor what their son is doing on the internet

because they clearly don't.

Just look at the groups is following on Google +!

This is a 15+ group!!

He's only 11 years old!!!!

Kid!!

Why??!!

Wh-

pff

wha-

???

Hold on there's Kathy hating group as well.

Oh it has more members than the Lehmon_ hating group..

I'm jealous

But hey, maybe he'll change

I wasn't better when I was 11...

*inhales*

Okay, I probably was but what I'm saying is

Younger people don't really understand what they can and can't do on the internet

There are mature, 11 years olds out there, of course, I'm not talking about them

That's all for this video. Thanks for your support

I love you all!

Do certain people exist to be ruled? - Duration: 14:39.

I just finished binging Bojack Horseman season 5, a show that deals extensively with the

intersection between a person's inner life and their actions.

A look into a character's inner world is what can turn a predatory, alcoholic, asshole

into a somewhat sympathetic predatory, alcoholic, asshole.

[BOJACK INNER NARRATIVE]

It really makes you question if we have the power

to really change, or if we're more of victim to automated processes than we thought.

But that's only fiction.

Enter this controversial PsychToday study and article, "Not Everyone Conducts Inner

Speech?"

In it, Doctor Russell T Hurlburt presents a study he conducted on inner speech, you

know that little voice in your head that guides your every move?

A group of students were asked to talk about the way they processed their thoughts about

different subjects, Surprisingly, some of them of didn't experience inner speech at all.

"Maybe Baars talks to himself all the time, and maybe McWhorter himself sees images of

written words while he talks (there's reason to be skeptical of both claims), but I've

investigated such things as carefully as I know how and become convinced that most people

(let alone all people) do not do such things."

"Most people (including psychologists and consciousness scientists and quite likely

you, dear reader), don't know the characteristics of their own and others' inner experience."

Have we been completely wrong about what it feels to be conscious this entire time?

If these people don't have inner speech, is their existence automated?

Alright cut the dramatic bullshit, this article was posted on some leftist subreddit along

with a question about what implications this had on the movement.

And in and of itself, it has zero implications.

I mean, f[HOO]king Einstein didn't have inner speech, inner speech isn't the same as consciousness

or introspection.

Just like some people can't imagine images, some don't have inner speech.

But it's a seductive, if narcissistic, scenario, being sentient in a sea of drones.

Horror movies are made out of this stuff.

And it's the belief in this idea, a pervasive cynicism of the world and humanity, that can

tell a lot about a person's political beliefs.

Research has found that cynicism and distrust of others is correlated with having an authoritarian

personality type and voting for authoritarian policies.

If you don't put faith in others, well, the placement of strict hierarchies and systems

of punishment begins to make sense.

Anyway, originally I wanted this video to be a fun, escapist what-if scenario.

Y'know, are there drones who mindlessly carry on with their life, can they handle

autonomy in the hypothetical future socialist world?

But like all fun things and politics, in my research for the video it became really clear

really fast that this wasn't just a fantasy, and it made me question my own willingness

to buy into the narrative.

This topic has been covered extensively by others, we all know the basics, so I'll

make it quick.

Here's two-dollar Jefferson on the topic: "A black [is] at least as brave, and more

adventuresome.

But this may perhaps proceed from a want of forethought, which prevents their seeing a

danger till it be present."

Psychologist Lewis Terman, father of the gifted education movement, has this to say:

"Children of [Spanish-Indian and Mexican families] should be segregated into separate

classes.

They cannot master abstractions, but they can often be made into efficient workers."

Here you see the prevailing sentiment of the time, black people, Native people and others

were animalistic drones with little consciousness.

Who, because of bogus science on their low IQ and brain size were deemed inferior and

subject to forced sterilization by the U.S. government, a practice that the U.S. Supreme

Court held up as constitutional.

While eventually the tide of history changed for racial minorities, it didn't change

for everyone.

"I feel I cannot stand this place a minute longer and soon I shall lose the brains, and

not be able to interest myself in others and everything that goes on in the world.

The monotony and routine simply drives me wild…

I feel I shall go on degenerating in this environment into an animal, that only lives

to eat – as we do here! – and has not thought beyond.

For really that is all the 'treatment' consists of."

"I have only just realised that I am actually in a lunatic asylum.

Who on Earth ordered the cabman to drive me here?"

Intellectually disabled people have always existed.

Madness is referenced numerous times in the Bible for example.

And during the Middle Ages, people's approach to them was… a bit draconian.

Their treatment varied by culture, but most associated people with mental disabilities

with the spiritual and the occult.

It was commonly thought that they were possessed by demons, so their treatment varied from

cruelly beating a person until the demon was exorcised, to bartering with the demon to

get them to leave voluntarily.

Most of these individuals ended up paupers and vagabonds, and while their lives were

never easy, they enjoyed relative freedom.

With the Renaissance came a fascination with reason, unreason and enlightenment.

People who were considered mad were still heavily stigmatized, but seen with a peculiar

sense of respect, it was believed that they were uniquely privy to certain cosmic truths.

The emphasis on reason eventually manifested itself in the medical model of madness, which

attributing madness to physical deficiencies in the body, not the occult.

From the 17th century onward, the mad were rounded up, confined and removed entirely

from society for treatment in asylums.

The treatment of madness could be overwhelmingly cruel.

Simulated drowning sessions, tranquilizing boxes that shut off sensation in the body,

and being put on spinning machines to induce vomiting and loss of consciousness.

As technology became more advanced, strait jackets to limit movement and lobotomies were

used often.

But it wasn't just the mad who were confined.

Overpopulated cities began to crack down on idleness, and using the police as their enforcement

mechanism, all deviant elements of society, from those with legitimate mental disorders,

to criminals, the unemployed, and women who disrespected their husbands were confined.

Some in workhouses to force economic contributions for all members of society, and others in

asylums.

Civilization and madness were completely opposed after all.

Civilization represents reason, while madness represents unreason.

And unreason was the battering ram used to remove anyone and everyone who was considered

unfit for society.

Despite a lot changing in medical science, institutionalization remains a major issue

for anyone with mental disabilities.

There was another controversial article, published in 2016 titled, "The War on Stupid People."

Famous statistician David H. Freedman argues that the United States has gone too far in

its quest to establish a meritocratic society, and in the process we have begun equating

human worth itself to intelligence.

It's unnecessarily glib and a little condescending, but it's unmistakably correct.

People who have low IQ's have a much lower quality of life.

They make far less money and are more likely to meet an early death.

People with low IQ's have been shut out pretty systematically, whether it's employment

opportunities disappearing, employers checking your college GPA when hiring or conducting

pre-employment tests to check your intelligence.

And you might not see anything wrong with this either, because if you're like me,

meritocratic ideals have been something we grew up with, if they're less able then

they deserve less of the pie.

And our collective fetish for IQ can be seen everywhere, from the circle-jerk on what the

Florida man is up to this week, to the Darwin Awards and top rated IAmVerySmart posts.

The most popular cult shows center on troubled genius, and people increasingly value intelligence

in their partners at the expense of other traits.

I think you get the point.

Freedman notes that it wasn't always so bad, up to the 50's, having an average or

low IQ wouldn't affect your quality of life very much at all.

He ends the article by noting that "when Michael Young, a British sociologist, coined

the term meritocracy in 1958, it was in a dystopian satire."

One where those who were destined to rule were fast-tracked on their way in life at

the expense of those without merit.

Sound familiar?.

A few points before we continue.

First, yeah things got worse for certain people with low IQ's after the fifties, for others

it was always that way, the United States has a long history of using IQ tests as justification

to gate-keep success.

America could be great for white men with low IQ because it was awful for just about

everyone else.

And secondly, it equates IQ with intelligence.

Not even the co-daddy of the IQ test, Alfred Binet thought it was an adequate measure of

intelligence, it can't measure emotional intelligence or creativity or a bunch of other

variables that make up what we think of when we think intelligence.

And studies show that having too high of an IQ, can make you a worse leader and manager,

so IQ even falters as a capitalist metric for workplace success.

You had one job IQ!

And third, and this might be the most important point of all, it assumes that IQ is an actual

measure of some tangible intellectual ability.

I don't know enough to say whether IQ measures anything other than an individual's ability

to take an IQ test, whether it's a simple aptitude exam that measures collected knowledge

with a Western flavor, but there's a serious argument to be made that IQ is a useless metric

entirely.

Either way, I want to argue on the terms of the author.

IQ equals intelligence equals merits, and that's the basis from which we'll continue,

because trying to decipher any further than this is too much for my peanut brain.

There's always an undercurrent of fatalism when we talk about intelligence, an unspoken

truth that it's either something you're born with, or something you acquire early

that can't change much.

There's serious science on the heritability of IQ, and because it's such a coveted trait,

insinuating that people or groups of people tend to have less of it than others is a huge

sin.

But I won't shy away from the controversy.

IQ and poverty are linked.

Heh you thought I was going to go somewhere else with that didn't you?

Nah, IQ and poverty.

And it's a nasty connection.

"Research shows that children who slip into poverty, even for a short time, suffer long-term

setbacks even when their families regain their economic footing," says psychologist Ruby

Takanishi, PhD "In addition to negative health outcomes[,]research

also shows that children raised in poverty are more likely to experience negative educational

and cognitive outcomes, often as a result of less mental stimulation and increased stress

in their living situations.

Some research even shows that the brains of poor children may be unable to process information

in the same way as the brains of kids in higher-income families."

"even though the economy is likely to recover in the next few years, a generation of disadvantaged

children may not."

Damn.

The process of cognitive recession in adults who slip into poverty is also measurable,

meaning being poor will actively hurt your intelligence.

Poverty creates poverty in a vicious cycle.

Which really flies in the face of everything we were ever told about how wealth was self-selecting

and those who were poor and homeless deserved it.

This view is still everywhere, with articles that have titles like "Is the American Dream

dead?"

And there's an obsessive amount of effort that goes into measuring the level of social

mobility in the country.

If we're reduced to a caste system where you can't advance no matter how hard you

try, well, we haven't made much progress from the old feudal system.

But assuming that the system is well-oiled and effort, intelligence and spunk is correlated

with higher success, is it still all that different from feudalism?

I mean, yeah, being able to advance economically is hugely important, but both meritocracy

and feudalism come with one important assumption: that, yes, some people exist to be the rulers,

and others exist to be ruled.

I would like to say that capitalism is special because feudalism came with the assumption

that your position as ruled and ruler was bred into you, but throughout much of capitalism's

history that, wasn't very different at all really.

And even today, we've decided that we're okay with unlimited levels of destitution

and inequality.

We just tell our selves that they deserve it.

Avocado Tree Grown From Seed, 30 Month Update! - Duration: 9:17.

I know it's been way too long for the avocado tree series update

hey everyone its Rob the backyard gardenerr here and it's time for an

avocado tree update a couple of things I'm gonna update you on my 30 month old

avocado tree that's the remaining survivor of the two I started way back

in March of 2016 I'm also going to show you the ones the two different smaller

versions that I started March of 2018 and they're just over six months old now

- and they are growing like weeds weeds crazy anyway let's get you updated I

know it's been a long time as I show you the plant I'm going to talk about why

it's not doing that well and some of the learnings I had over this very very hot

summer let's go take a look so first I wanted update you on my six month old

avocado trees that I'm growing here look at how tall and big these guys are so I

started in the pots indoors and when they got to about a foot tall I brought

him outside these have done a lot better this part of the yard gets a lot of

shade from all the trees that you see here so these guys despite the Texas

heat and the Blazing Sun they've actually done well there's a little bit

of yellowing on the leaves because again avocado trees don't like a hundred

hundred and five degree days non-stop blazing down on them and they got some

of that but the one in the shade the more shaded plant has done even better

at the end of the day for six months hold these guys are almost three feet

tall now it's crazy they're a little bit thin on the trunks because they are

shaded most of the day but still I'm pretty happy with these now the reason

why I started a second batch this March is because as you know last winter I

lost one of my thirty month old trees and at the time it was probably only

about 21 months and I lost them so because of that being down to one plant

and it's been struggling the one plant which I'll show you next I wanted to

have a backup set going just to make sure I can continue this series should

something happen this winter now I've learned my lesson

every avocado tree that I left outdoors over the winter pretty much perished

pretty much perished so all of these will be coming indoors over the winter

and I will have the right kind of lighting for them so that they continue

to at least thrive as much as possible as they activate from being outdoors to

indoors and then more importantly when they go from being indoors back to

outdoors next spring anyway I wanted to give you guys a good look at these these

are also from Hass avocado seeds so they're hot they're gonna be hybrids

though because they're bought in a supermarket and plan it from that pit if

you look at the leaves on this one they're not they're just basically

rounded smooth edged and on this one they have ribs or ridges so I think this

might be a different species than that one who knows they're young hard to tell

just yet and it'll be many more years if we find out what they really are at the

end of the day six month old growing like weeds doing well it just goes to

show you starting the pits in the dirt and then

getting them outside seems to be better than starting them in water in my

opinion now that you've seen these let me show you my 30 month old one and how

he's doing I'm gonna warn you ahead of time he doesn't look the greatest he

yellowed up a lot i fertilized them we've had some overcast the last five

days so he's starting to do better here he is up here you can see he has when we

got a big first one we got a lot of pepper plants in the way and I apologize

these things have gone crazy I harvested a hundred peppers today and they just

keep producing but bottom line is let me go ahead and show you this avocado tree

he's really starting to get his woody trunk now and almost all the way up

he's been worse for wear though I'll tell you this guy has struggled I don't

know how he has survived I've done my best I probably honestly needed to

remove him from this spot when it was in that heat of the hundred days

consecutively I think we had over a hundred days in a row at over 95 degrees

to 108 degrees and so he was being baked luckily this side of the yard because of

my house doesn't get full Sun all day but it didn't matter the heat against

the bricks and the sunlight really did a number on him you can see a lot of his

foliage was crisp and burnt even the newer foliage has struggled but

were finally past the hundred degree days we're starting to get overcast days

we're starting to get more rain he's really done well the last week to bounce

back a lot of these leaves were droopy and I'll get you another view in a

second he's put out a lot of growth unfortunately it's a lot of stunted

growth because he has struggled now I've maintained a pretty good regiment of

fertilizer but and watering I'll be honest with you and watering but the

heap was just too much for him let me get a bird's-eye view of them so you can

take a look at the foliage so as you can see a lot of these leaves have a lot of

damage a lot of Sun burning damage again it's not from lack of nutrients or water

guys the newer leaves are looking a little bit more healthy and I'll even

show you the newer leaves up here so the newer leaves are looking pretty good man

it's been a tough summer I'll tell you this has been the worst summer for me

for tomatoes and for my avocado series because it's just been too hot and this

guy now that he's almost 11 feet tall it's really hard to put him anywhere in

any other spot where he doesn't either get a lot of wind a lot of Sun a lot of

heat or where I can fit him personally so it's been a struggle I really

appreciate everyone sticking with me as I failed to provide updates but look at

him what about what was I going to show you and this is the best he's looked in

several months so it's been a struggle but this is part of growing from seed

you learn and this is part of growing trees in your zone that don't really

thrive in your zone we're gonna continue to work on this guy I'm assuming because

now that it's not so hot he's gonna start healthing up a little bit I am due

to give him a nice fertilizer here in the next two weeks which I will do I

might even expedite it doodle or early it'll probably be a balanced 5-5-5

fertilizer I might go a little heavy on the

nitrogen by adding some worm castings to it but at the end of the day I'm just

haven't been that happy with his progress this year he put on a lot more

growth last year which I lost because I left them out in the freeze for a few

days as call so anyway he's bounced back he's

starting to show some some some bigger to his to his foliage and it looks so

poor but now it's just yellow my main objective here is to allow him to relax

from the Sun a little bit start to put on new foliage continue to branch out

maybe shed some of these dying on leaves or these crispier leaves I don't really

want to prune him yet till he puts on more leaves because I want to make sure

he has enough leaf and foliage to produce photosynthesis so that he gets

his nutrients anyway I'll give you a little bit more

time to take a look at him again he's got several branching he was very sparse

before but like I said just a minute ago every time he puts on new foliage a new

branching it just doesn't it doesn't look that healthy because the Sun bakes

it and young tender leaves don't enjoy blazing hot Sun I'm really happy that

I've been able to keep this guy life at 30 months growth of a pit and more

importantly we're starting to get near that time frame were in the next 12 to

48 months he might flower and or fruit you never know

anyway everyone like I said I know he doesn't look the greatest and it is what

it is we're learning this year and this guy has been a good learning for me I

think one of the things I need to prep for next year is probably finding him a

new location one that gets a little bit less wind one that's not so close to the

bricks one that's not as in the direct sunlight as much I'll have to find him a

shaded spot where he gets partial Sun and less wind the biggest key I've got

to do now is like I said healthy them up to get them for prep to be indoors I'll

need to make sure I find them a spot indoors that gets ample lighting and if

we can do all that man if we keep this guy going into next season who knows if

next season he might even put on a flower who knows I'm not saying he will

but you never know typically avocado trees grown from a pit take four to

seven years until they fruit we've just hit 30 months so technically we're still

18 months away from a chance but you never know Mother Nature is tricky

sometimes and sometimes she huh gives you a helping hand and sometimes she

could hurt as well we all know that at the end of the day I appreciate you

sticking with me as I give you these updates on these plants that I'm growing

from seed and if you're enjoying this series despite the lack of updates sorry

there's mosquitoes everywhere if you're enjoying this series despite the lack of

updates I'd really appreciate a thumbs up and as always everyone happy

gardening and thanks for watching
