-We got a lot of history here. -[ Laughs ]

-We have a lot of history here, man.

-Hey, look at this. [ Cheers and applause ]

-We got a lot -- -Lot of history.

-We've got a lot of history here.

-A lot of history. -A lot of fun times, dude.

Oh, my God. -How are you?

-That one interview, I can't even talk about.

-More people stop me in the street for that interview.

They're like, "Man, that Elephant Man interview!"

-[ Laughs ] -Dude, that was --

-Do you guys remember that at all?

[ Cheers ]

-I won't do it this time. -No, no, no. We're fine.

We're over that. [ Both laugh ]

-Oh, my gosh! Don't start again.

-We don't have the hats, so we're fine.

-I know, I know. All right. But that was like --

-That was crazy. -A 25-minute interview.

-That was crazy. -That was absolutely crazy.

-And my favorite thing is that you aired it.

[ Laughter ] -Yeah, we did!

The full 25 minutes.

We didn't take anything out of it at all.

No, I love it.

I got to -- The last time you were here,

though, was a while ago, man. I miss you.

-It was -- yeah, yeah.

I've been doing nothing but this movie.

-Yeah. -Yeah, I think the last

promotional thing I ever did was here with you.

I think it was three years ago.

-You did -- You did a thing where --

'Cause you said the only music talent you really have

is that you can play air guitar, and then...

-That's right. -...you went off,

and we put these crazy wigs on.

You wanted me to play... -"Down By the River."

-"Down By the River," Neil Young.

Actually, I have a photo of you. This is January 2015.

-That was a do -- that was a do-or-die moment.

That was --

-That was a do-or-die moment, and you nailed it.

-Thank you. -You were fantastic.

And then, I see this movie.

Last night I saw it.

You're playing guitar, you're singing --

I mean, you're playing piano.

-You know, I got to tell you, quite honestly,

remember when we were coming on,

we always trying to find something to do.

-Yeah. -It was kind of like a test run,

I swear to God, to see if, like,

if I didn't look ridiculous even though it's air-guitaring

to see if it -- -Playing the guitar?

-I swear to God. -Really?

-Yeah, just thought, "Let me just see..."

'cause that looked so ridiculous that I wouldn't --

you know, I won't even try to do it.

And it was kind of like a little test.

-Oh, 'cause it worked here? -Yeah, it kind of worked.

-"Oh, I can direct a movie"? -Not direct a movie, but like --

[ Laughter ]

Not direct a movie, but, like,

do you even believe that it could even be in the world?

-How did you get so good?

-I mean, I just -- I haven't seen you.

That's all I've been doing. -Really?

-Yeah, yeah. -You learned to play guitar?

-But I say -- that's --

So there's no trickery with the camera,

but I dubbed over Lukas Nelson's sound.

So what you're hearing is Lukas Nelson's guitar,

who's the sickest -- "Promise of the Real."

You know, he's Willie Nelson's son.

-Yeah. -He's incredible.

But that's all me. Yeah, I learned all the --

-You're raging out, and --

And you're playing in front of real crowds.

-Yeah, we jumped on Stagecoach.

Jamey Johnson let us come on right before Willie Nelson,

and then, we went to Glastonbury.

Yeah, that was insane. It was insane.

-Could people hear what you were doing?

-No. God no. [ Laughter ]

-"Hell no. We didn't plug anything in."

The first five rows --

We couldn't play it through the P.A. system

because of the music. All the music's original.

So the music couldn't get out there.

But it was playing through the monitors.

So, about five rows out, they could hear us.

But then like, you know, 20 rows out, they couldn't.

So it was -- -Did they know it was you?

-I think it happened so fast, Jimmy.

Like, we had five minutes.

You know, we had eight minutes at Stagecoach,

and we had four minutes at Glastonbury.

-What if people started booing you?

-That would be a problem. [ Laughter ]

You know, I thought about that, though.

'Cause, you know, you're like -- you got to think about it.

-What if they throw something at you?

-Well, the guy's career really takes a tumble fast.

-Yeah. -But I didn't know.

You know, you're in England.

I don't know if they're gonna throw bottles.

I have no idea what's gonna happen.

-Let's set up the movie, for anyone who doesn't know

"A Star is Born." -Yeah, I mean it's --

I mean, it's a property that's been around.

But, really, the movie that we tried to make

is a movie about love.

What happens if two people actually really love each other

and how hard it is to endure even with that love.

And it's about finding your voice,

about finding something to say in this world that's --

You know, it's hard.

People are gonna tell who you you are,

what you're supposed to say.

I mean, I think we've all been through that.

And how you can have more courage to do that

if you have the support of people around you and love.

So it's really, you know --

I mean, it sounds cheesy, but it's just a call for,

you know, how important love is.

-What made you want to do this movie, and why now?

-That's a good question. Um...

I think it was because I'm getting older.

I was 39 years old when I decided to do it.

And I just had all these images rolling around in my head.

I've always wanted to direct.

I just never had the courage to do it.

And then, quite honestly, when I saw Lady Gaga perform,

and she did "La Vie En Rose," which is a scene in the movie...

-Oh, dude, it's heartbreaking.

She does such a great performance in the movie.

-I know. She's insane. -Everybody was weeping.

-Yeah, she really is. -And then, you came on,

they were like, "Aww." [ Laughter ]

Everyone loves you, dude. -Oh, thanks, man.

-You have a movie-star face. Yeah.

[ Laughter ]

It was good. -I look like a pallbearer.

-No. [ Both laugh ]

But, dude, you go like, "I'm gonna do 'A Star is Born.'"

And you wrote the movie?

-Yeah, everybody said, "Don't do it."

-Oh, really? -Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Well, think about it --

"I'd like to make the fourth remake,

and I've never directed before,

with someone who's never done a film."

"Yeah, you go do it." -Yeah, exactly.

-"Great idea!" -Why didn't you start

with, like, a commercial or a music video?

-'Cause I haven't -- -That's what I would've done.

-I just never had -- That scares the hell out of me.

Because, you know, you're telling the story cinematically,

so there's a reason for the composition.

It has to come from why I'm telling the story.

You tell me just to do something randomly,

I have no idea where I would put the camera,

because I don't know what I'm -- what's my point of view.

So I just -- I had no choice.

This is the thing that moved me, so I had to do it.

-Dude, you crushed it. And then --

How about the scene... I'm not spoiling anything.

[ Light laughter ]

...where you do "Saturday Night Live"?

-That was nuts. -Two floors up.

-Thanks to Lorne Michaels, man. That was crazy.

-You actually shot in 8H? -Yeah, I asked him

if there's any way, because, you know,

Lady Gaga's the real deal.

So the rest of the movie -- It just had to be authentic.

And, also, you can't --

Just the lighting alone at "Saturday Night Live,"

the cost of having to re-create

all those lights in the ceiling...

-But why did you choose "Saturday Night Live"?

-Oh, that's a good question.

I didn't want to do a montage of her rise.

Like, I just didn't want to -- Like, this is her ascension.

-Yeah, it's hard coming out

in different outfits and stuff, yeah.

-So it's like, "What could be the moment

where you're like, "Oh, okay, she's arrived."

There's no other place than "Saturday Night Live."

It's like, if you're gonna be the musical guest

at the season finale of "Saturday Night Live,"

some stuff has changed. -That was great.

-Yeah. -And you had Alec introduce her.

-And Alec was kind enough -- -As a character.

-Yeah. -Dude.

I mean, again, I'm a fan of yours,

but I forgot it was you.

I'm watching the movie, and I go, "This is Jackson."

-Oh, man. That's awesome.

-And it was great. And your voice.

-Yeah. That was --

-[ Deep voice ] He has a real deep voice.

-That's pretty good. -Thank you.

I auditioned for the film. You didn't choose me.

[ Laughter ]

-You know, it's funny you say that,

because I was thinking about it, you know,

how talented you are doing voices.

'Cause it took me so long. So I actually brought --

I would do, like, a sheet, you know,

that would get me warmed up for the voice to play Jackson.

And I just wanted to see 'cause I bet you

you could pull this off.

So this is the sheet that I would have every morning

to get ready to get into his voice.

-This is fantastic. -Yeah, so does that qualify --

-Yeah. I'd love to be --

-Let's just try -- -This'll be great.

Just tell me what to say. -Yeah, yeah.

So, basically, what we do is we're gonna do

some warmup exercises, and then, we're gonna just start.

So, this is an interview. -Is this English?

-Yes. [ Laughter ]

So we'll just pick a couple. So first, you're gonna --

First, you go like this.

Wee-wa, wee-wa -- Read it.

Ready? Go.

-Wee-wee-wee-wee-wee-wee-wee.

Wa-wa-wa. Wee-wa, wee-wa, wee-wa, wee-wa.

Wh-y-y-y-y-o-o-o-o-o.

Wh-y-y-y-y-o-o-o-o-o.

-I can't remember what that is. Blow raspberries.

I don't know what that is. -Blow raspberries?

-Yeah, I have no idea what that means.

-Ready? Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma.

-Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma.

-May-may-may-may. Me-me-me-me-me.

Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma. -Sharona.

[ Laughter ] -Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa.

-Da-da-da-da. Ka-ka-ka-ka-ka.

-You know it! That's the rhythm.

[ Laughter ]

Ready? Here we go.

Get more confident. -All right, here we go.

-Paper poppy, paper poppy, paper poppy.

Baby bubble, baby bubble, baby bubble, baby bubble.

Paper poppy, paper poppy, paper poppy.

Baby bubble, baby bubble, baby bubble, baby bubble.

Kicky cookie, kicky cookie, kicky cookie, kicky cookie.

-All right, look -- Keeky cookie.

-Keeky cookie. -That's it, okay.

And now we go here -- Eleven benevolent elephants.

Eleven benevolent elephants.

-Eleven blenevent blah. -It's hard, dude.

-That is insane. -Eleven benevolent elephants.

Eleven benevolent elephants. Eleven benevolent elephants.

-Oh, my God. -Try it, try it, try it.

-Eleven benevolent elephants. Hey, that was good.

I'm gonna stop there. I'm gonna stop there.

More with Bradley Cooper after the break.

I'm exhausted.

Molly Shannon Shows Off the Dance Moves She Tried to Impress Debbie Allen With - Duration: 2:58.

-You did Broadway stuff. -I did.

-You did do Broadway stuff. -I did.

Well, when I was a struggling actress at NYU drama school,

I was really determined to make it.

So I got a -- I borrowed somebody's Equity card,

and I made a fake Equity card

so I could sneak into Actors' Equity and go on auditions.

Even -- And, so, because they had auditions, open calls

for big Broadway shows,

and there was this big new musical called "Smile,"

where they were casting girls, you know, my age,

like 18 years old, to be the stars of this Broadway musical.

And I did sneak in with my fake Equity card,

and I made it really far.

It was, like, singers who could move well

was what was required, and I love singing.

So, I did really well on the singing part,

and I made it down to the final, final, final, final callback.

But for the final, final callback,

where there were only like 20 girls left,

we had to do the "dance" part of the audition,

and Miss Debbie Allen was the choreographer.

So, we got to meet her. -A famous...

-A famous choreographer.

-Like the gold standard of dance, really.

Yes, so, she was just like -- You know, I was like,

"Oh, my God. This is could be my big break!

I've made it this far with the singing

and now the dancing portion."

So, I went in, and they were all --

Debbie Allen and all the other executive producers

were behind a table, and she was like, "All right."

We like your singing. Now let's see your dancing."

And I was like, "Okay." And, so, just freestyle.

She was like, "Just show me your moves."

And I was like, "Okay, just like that?

Like, no music or anything?"

So, she was like, "Nope. Just show me your moves."

So, this is what I did.

[ Laughter ]

[ Cheers and applause ]

Where should I do it? -Just -- Yeah. Right over there.

-So, I have a dress --

I have a dress on, so I can't really move,

but I was just like, "Are you ready, Miss Allen?"

And she was like, "Yes." And I was just like...

[ Cheers and applause ]

[ Cheers and applause ]

-Holla! -Holla! Holla.

-And, now, how did that end?

Was it pretty immediate that they asked you to leave?

-She was like, "Thank you."

Like, that was it.

It was the worst. That's a true story.

I hope I didn't show -- flash my undies.

I have a dress on, so that was hard to do.

I wish I could have moved well. But, you know, you get the idea.

-You should know that it was better than what we saw.

It was very limited by the dress.

Like that -- It was so much better than that.

-Yes, yes, exactly. -Yeah.

Thank you so much for being here.

It is always just the joy of joys to have you here.

Molly Shannon Reveals What Words and Expressions She Hates the Most - Duration: 4:10.

-I'm so happy you're here. Congrats on the film.

But congrats on something even bigger.

-Thank you. What? -You got a pool.

-Yes, I got a -- We got a pool.

[ Laughter ]

-Was it great?

-Congrats to you because I can't believe

you're the father of two boys. -I am.

-That's amazing. So I just have to say that.

-Thank you. [ Cheers and applause ]

But not a single pool. So, yeah.

-But not a single pool.

-Yeah. -Okay. So, yes.

So, we put a pool in our backyard and a Jacuzzi.

And I have to say it's best thing ever.

-Wow.

Did you think you would take to pool life right away?

-I did, because I'm the type of person --

whenever I go to hotels I'll swim for an hour,

'cause it gives me such a good sleep.

-Great.

-I just love the pool lifestyle

as a mother, like, swimming with your kids.

There's something about it just really makes me feel like a mom.

-That's great. -So, I love it.

And I just really got into the lifestyle,

and I was like, "I'm gonna get a grill."

I've never grilled in my life. [ Laughter ]

And I just went and bought, like, the best Viking grill,

and I was like, "I'm gonna learn."

And I made burger patties, and I had like seven kids over,

and I was just determined. I had to light it.

And I was really proud of myself.

So, I grilled up, like, 10 burgers and chicken breasts.

-Wow! Burgers and chicken breasts?

[ Laughter ]

You jumped in with both feet.

-I did. I really did. But I love it.

So, I love my, like, California lifestyle.

-And that must be very exciting for your kids.

Your kids are teenagers now. -Yes.

So, them having a pool, that's a game changer for them as well.

-It's a game changer.

All their friends come over,

and they're always sitting in the Jacuzzi.

So it's really nice.

I like having all the kids at our house.

-Yes. Keep an eye on them. -I like that. Yeah.

-I know that one thing you do with your kids

is you come up with expressions that you guys don't like.

Can you give me an example of a few?

-Well, yes.

We have a long drive to school in the morning,

and so we just do little things like -- like, games like that.

And I say, expressions --

I ask the kids to think of expressions

they don't like that people say.

So my personal ones that I don't like are --

I don't like when people say, "Ya think?"

[ Laughter ]

I just think it's -- I don't know. I don't like that.

-Okay, gotcha.

-And then I don't -- like, this is so negative.

I don't like when people are like, "Holla."

That's something you will never --

[ Laughter ]

-Gotcha. -What is -- I don't like that.

-It's not even come close to being something you would do?

-Never. -Yeah.

-Only as a joke. -Yeah, gotcha.

-"Holla." [ Laughter ]

And I don't like "She's the most amazing human."

-Oh, yeah.

-It just sounds so -- -That's a little gross.

-It's just sounds kind of, like, pretentious or something.

And then my sister Mary doesn't like it when people say like,

"Oh, I just want to veg out. I'm such a couch potato."

She doesn't like that.

-Okay, gotcha.

-And then I went on a date once with a guy who said --

he was, like, instead of saying kindergarten,

he was like, "What were you like in kinney garden?"

And I was like, "Ooh." [ Laughter ]

-Ooh. Kinney garden's real bad.

-I was like, "Ooh, are you a baby? And this date is ovah."

-Yeah. Holla. -Holla.

[ Cheers and applause ]

-I don't like --

-Kinney garden.

-Kinney garden's bad. -Yeah, yeah. It was bad.

-Your kids, obviously -- You grew up in Ohio.

I grew up in New Hampshire.

Your kids -- You know, my kids are growing up in New York.

Your kids are growing up in L.A.

Are they -- Do they like growing up in L.A.?

Do you guys ever see, like, celebrities?

Are they excited to have grown up in a place

where you see famous people?

-What's so great about growing up in L.A. is

my daughter and I were at the Vaughn's in Burbank.

This is when she was really little.

And we saw one of the original members of the cast

of "The Wizard of Oz," one of the original Lollipop kids.

And he was about 102 years old.

[ Laughter ]

And he was in our line to check out,

and he happened to have a sparkly "Wizard of Oz" jacket.

And he was like, "I was one of the original Lollipop kids."

And I was like, "This is legendary."

And he had cards.

And my daughter was kind of weirded out

because he looked, you know.

And then she said, she was like, "Mommy."

She, like, whispered to the side of me.

She was like four at the time.

She was like, "Can we stop talking to this old kid?"

[ Laughter ]

She called him an old kid 'cause she didn't --

-Why would -- Yeah.

She couldn't put it together. Sure.

-Yeah. But anyhow.

Trump's Mississippi Rally, Presidential Emergency Alert System - Monologue - Duration: 3:06.

-Let's get to the news.

President Trump held a campaign rally

in Mississippi last night.

Said Trump, "M-I-S-S-I-S-S-S-I-P-S-S-P-I-

"P-I-I-I-S-S-I-I-I-

I...I...I...I...I." [ Laughter ]

According to "The New York Times,"

during a high school party,

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, quote,

"triumphantly hoisted an empty beer keg above his head

"because he and his friends were close to reaching their goal

of drinking 100 kegs during their senior year."

[ Laughter ]

"Yeah, call me when you can do a full one,"

said Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Well, earlier today,

the President forced himself on all of us.

[ Laughter ]

FEMA tested out its new Presidential Alert system today,

sending a simultaneous message to every cellphone in America

at 2:18 P.M.,

or, if you're on T-Mobile, 2:51 P.M.

[ Laughter ]

[ Applause ]

That's right, everyone using a cellphone in America

received a text alert from President Trump today.

"How did he get my number?", yelled Melania.

[ Laughter ]

[ Applause ]

The White House announced today that President Trump

will donate his second quarter salary

to the Small Business Administration.

And Trump knows a thing or two

about how to run a small business.

Step one, start by inheriting a large business.

[ Laughter and applause ]

"And then..."

[ Cheers and applause ]

"And then you just sit back and wait."

[ Laughter ]

According to a new poll, when taking a U.S. citizenship test,

only 24% could correctly identify one thing

Benjamin Franklin was famous for.

Even worse, 36% asked,

"Is that the guy 'Hamilton' is about?"

[ Laughter ]

A flight from Phoenix to Boston this week

was forced to make an emergency landing

after a passenger allegedly refused to stop doing pull-ups

using the plane's overhead bins.

[ Laughter ]

Said flight attendants, "This is why we don't give you

the full can of Coke!"

[ Laughter ]

[ Applause ]

Donald Trump Jr. campaigned in Texas tonight

for Senator Ted Cruz, where they entered the room together

to chants of "My eyes! My eyes!"

[ Laughter ]

[ Cheers and applause ]

And finally, some users of the new iPhone are upset

after they noticed that the new camera

is automatically softening and smoothing skin

when they take selfies.

But personally, I think it makes

the President look great.

Gimp 2.10.6: Bokeh Effect Technique Nr: 2 - Duration: 6:22.

In this Gimp Workshop tutorial, we are going to make a bokeh effect.

Right click on the thumbnail of the image in your image folder,

go to open with and click on Gimp.

If you want to use the same image as in the video,

there is a down load link in the video description.

If needed, we can press Ctrl+Shift+J to fit your image in the window.

Click on the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel,

to open the new layer dialog box.

Name this layer bokeh.

Make sure that the fill type is transparency.

Click okay.

Then we click the duplicate button 3 times,

so we have four transparent layers.

Right click on the layer, just above the portrait layer.

Go to color tag and hit yellow.

Now we go to the toolbox and we click on the paintbrush.

Choose brush sparks.

Make the size 400.

Check the option apply jitter and make the amount 2.

This will scatter the sparks when we paint them.

Then we can paint some yellow sparks in the image like so.

The size of the sparks and the pattern changes randomly when we paint,

and this depends on how we click and move the mouse.

We can always use Ctrl+Z to undo one or more steps and try again.

We do not want to much yellow however,

because the dominant color in our image will eventually be cyan like blueish.

When this looks okay, we right click on the layer above the active one.

Click on color tag and then on violet.

The paintbrush is still active, so we can paint some more sparks, like so.

They will also be yellow, but we will change that in a minute.

When we click the eye of the layer with the yellow tag off and on,

we can see how we are doing.

When we think its enough, we go to colors in the menu bar.

Here we hit hue/chroma.

We change the hue to minus 105.

Click the preview of and on, to see the difference.

Then hit okay.

Right click on the copy 1 layer.

Hit color tag and now we choose for the green one.

Go to the toolbox and make the paintbrush active.

Make some more splatters, like so.

Back to colors and to hue/chroma.

This time we make the hue 55.

Again we can click the preview of and on to see the difference.

Then we hit okay.

Now we go to the top layer, right click on it,

click on color tag and on the color blue.

Make the paintbrush active again.

Make splatters and sparks, like so.

We can add some more sparks than we did by the other colors.

When this is done, we click on colors and hue/chroma again.

Make the hue 130.

Click the preview button of and on,

and when we think it looks good, we hit okay.

Make the portrait layer active.

Go to colors and color balance.

We change the cyan red value to minus 40,

and the yellow blue value to plus 5.

The outcome of this depends also on the colors of all the other layers,

so you might want to do some experimenting.

When we feel its looks good, then we click okay.

Go ahead, and make the eraser tool active.

Change the opacity to about 50.

Choose brush hardness 025, and make its size about 200.

Then we make the yellow layer active,

and we can erase some of the yellow splats.

Make the violet layer active and do the same.

Go ahead and click on the green layer and erase where you think it is necessary.

And finally the blue layer.

We can also change the opacity of each individual layer to our liking.

To finish of, we select the portrait layer.

Then we go to colors again and now to curves.

We make the lighter areas a bit darker, like so.

Then hit okay.

And there we have it.

A sparkling bokeh effect.

I hope you like this video.

If so, please give it a like,

maybe write a nice comment,

and subscribe if you have not done already,

to support my channel.

Thanks very much for watching.

North Island of New Zealand - a cycling journey - Duration: 10:12.

Off through the North Island of New Zealand

and the bicycles roll by themselves

you do not have to step off the pedals

Actually, it does not feel like riding a bike today

really not

yes, you can go

well done

I call that craze

cycle craze

It's not made easy here

Like sheep for shearing, you are now in the pit lane

I love the old railway tracks through the mountains

There are finally car-free zones for cyclists

here is dark forest

Again a tunnel

And where is the potential tunnel driver?

pushing downhill

but it is totally steep downhill

Eddy looks where we can fight through

Where did you go?

I'll free her to get on, right?

We have to make over 100km today...

...and that's not the right speed!

Oh, nice!

Cheers

Soon the food is ready and we have already set up the tent...

...and have this beautiful environment

Going to the toilet in New Zealand is always an experience...

...and I'd like to share this experience with you now!

Go on this high-tech thing...

...and touch free...

...a door opens

And now comes the experience!

You sit down...

...do your business...

...another button is to be pressed...

...automatically comes the toilet paper...

...in the exact prescribed length...

...tear off a courageous piece...

...fold as often as needed...

...and use it!

And again "touch free" everything is washed away

And now hand under it

Of course you should take off the gloves before

soap, water, dryer

And then you leave the good ettablisment, if possible in less than 10 minutes!!!

by holding his hand in front of the touch free button again

Yes, please, gladly happen :-)

I think today you don't have to drive over this suspension bridge

today you can walk

Do you want to come back and I'll do it?

Well, then come back!

The last 3 weeks on the North Island of New Zealand have passed very fast

We spent about 3 months cycling around both islands

Pity that winter was now at the door and our residence permit expired

We had to move on

In Australia we cycled further on our bikes again. But this is another story.

Les déchets ne mentent pas ! - Duration: 3:27.

In addition to scientific equipment, the Voyager spacecraft each carry,

out beyond the solar system,

a golden record encoding information about the earth and our human civilization.

These time capsules contain examples of the best aspects of humanity:

language, music, art, and scientific achievements.

Environmental destruction, war and cable tv didn't make the list.

Neither did garbage!

And yet, every single time you throw something away, you're contributing to a collective time capsule.

Because buried deep within the landfills that dot the Earth

lies precious information about who we are, how we live and what we really care about.

Archaeologists use heaps of trash to study people and culture.

They even have a special, nice-sounding name for these garbage piles:…

…middens.

In one midden near Rome, archeologists uncovered 25 million containers

for carrying olive oil,

telling us that Romans used a LOT of olive oil

but almost none of it came from Rome - most was from Spain and Egypt.

And we know from shell middens that the Maori people of New Zealand

hunted moa and seals early on, but later had to switch

to fish, shellfish, and small birds as the moa and seals became overhunted.

Digging through more recent history, a midden outside of George Washington's home revealed

the belt buckles he wore, the china he used,

and the meat he and his guests ate off of that china.

Even now, in our era of modern record keeping and data,

we sometimes need to look through the garbage to see what we're really like.

In the 1980's, there was huge outcry

about the gross quantity of garbage humans were making,

with many environmental groups painting a picture of disposable diapers

and fast food packaging filling up our landfills.

It's true that we were producing a lot of trash,

but when researchers examined what was in those landfills,

diapers and fast food containers accounted for less than 2 percent of new landfill volume.

The majority was construction waste and paper.

Around the same time, a professor in Tucson interviewed people about their eating habits,

then went through their trash to see what they threw away.

It turns out that people and their garbage tell two very different stories.

Participants overreported healthy foods,

and underreported foods they considered bad.

For example, they reported drinking only half as much alcohol

as the bottles in their trash indicated.

And everybody underreported how much fat they ate;

except people who had lived through WWII.

Those generations tended to overreport butter,

which was heavily rationed during the war and consequently considered valuable and healthful.

So a survey or carefully crafted time capsule is probably biased

towards the best parts of our lives,

the parts we want people to remember and extraterrestrials to know about.

But our trash doesn't lie.
