Why China Is so Good at Building Railways - Duration: 12:13.

This video was made possible by Squarespace.

Imagine a train that took you from Washington, DC to Dallas, Texas in nine hours… or Paris,

France to Athens, Greece in nine hours… or Adelaide, South Australia to Perth, Western

Australia in nine hours.

These train trips actually take 44 hours, 44 hours, and 41 hours respectively so the

idea of making any of these trips by train in nine hours seems almost absurd.

In China, though, that's reality.

In September, 2018 the country opened up a brand new high speed rail route with d irect

trains from Hong Kong to Beijing.

This is about the same distance as DC to Dallas, Paris to Athens, or Adelaide to Perth and

yet these trains make the trip in only 8 hours and 56 minutes.

What makes this even more impressive is that ten years ago, in 2008, at the time of the

Beijing Olympics, China's high-speed rail network consisted of this.

We'll have to zoom in because the extent of the network was one 19 mile-long Maglev

train from Shanghai Airport to the outskirts of Shanghai and a traditional high-speed rail

line from Beijing to the coastal city of Tianjin.

Today, ten years later, that network has expanded into this.

China has eight times as much high speed track as France, ten times as much as Japan, twenty

times as much as the UK, and five-hundred times as much as the US.

In fact, China has as much high-speed rail track as the rest of the world combined.

It is staggering the amount of progress they have made in such a short amount of time.

Traditionally high speed rail exists in small countries with rich populations by the likes

of Germany, France, and Japan.

China is neither of these things.

The country is enormous, about the same size as the US, and is also not rich.

While no longer poor, China is definitively a middle income country.

It's about as rich as Mexico, Thailand, or Brazil.

In fact, despite being the country with the most high speed rail in the world, China is

also the poorest country in the world to have any high speed rail.

Despite the country's vast size, China's huge population makes it very dense especially

in the east half.

This means that China does have large cities close enough together where it makes sense

to take the train rather than the plane.

Trips like Guangzhou to Changsha, a distance of 350 miles, take an hour by plane or 2 hours

and 20 minutes by train.

When factoring in the time it takes to check in, go through security, and board it absolutely

makes sense to go by train when traveling between these two cities even without considering

that the high-speed train is cheaper than flying.

High speed rail even makes sense in China on longer routes where it wouldn't in other

countries.

Beijing and Shanghai, for example, are about 650 miles apart.

Normally that would be too far for high speed rail to make sense.

Paris and Barcelona, for example, are 500 miles apart—closer than Beijing and Shanghai—but

only two high speed trains a day run between the two cities compared to about 20 flights.

Between Beijing and Shanghai, on the other hand, about 50 flights run per day run compared

to 41 trains.

Considering the trains carry far more people each, up to 1,200, trains are therefore the

dominant means of transport between these two cities.

There are a few differences between these two routes.

For one, while Beijing-Shanghai by train takes 4 hours and 28 minutes, Paris-Barcelona, despite

being a shorter distance, takes a longer 6 hours and 25 minutes.

The other factor, though, is about the competition.

Europe has an efficient air transport network dominated by budget airlines that are often

far cheaper than trains.

You can find tickets for flights between Paris and Barcelona for as little as $12 while the

cheapest Beijing-Shanghai flights go for $74.

Air travel within China is also far from efficient.

China Southern, China Eastern, and Air China, the three largest Chinese airlines, arrive

on time an average of 67%, 66%, and 63% of the time respectively.

A big reason for this is that there's just not enough room in the skies.

A majority of China's airspace is military controlled meaning that there are just these

narrow flight corridors that account for 30% of airspace where civilian planes can fly.

With tons of planes and not much room to fly planes are frequently delayed by air traffic

control to wait for the airspace to clear up which leads to the abysmal on-time ratings

of the country's airlines.

While the Beijing-Shanghai flight takes only two hours the potential of delays, along with

all the other factors that make air travel slower, help make the train the popular means

of transport on this longer route.

Other train routes in China, though, make less sense.

For example, in 2014, the new high speed train line opened between Lanzhou and Urumqi.

These two cities are relatively small by China standards.

They both have a population of 3.5 million and between them are only small towns.

They're also not close—about 1,000 miles separate them.

This project could therefore be compared to building a high speed train from Denver to

Seattle—they're modestly sized cities a long way's apart with nothing big in between.

Some people would use it but it wouldn't make any financial sense.

In China, Lanzhou and Urumqi are not small cities but there's really nothing big in

between and, at that distance, there's no sense not flying.

The Lanzhou-Urumqi high speed train takes 11 hours compared to the 2.5 hour flight and

the construction cost of that line was $20 billion meaning that, if every seat on every

train was filled tickets would still have to cost $400 each way just to make back the

construction cost in 30 years.

In reality tickets cost about $80 and trains are far from full meaning that this rail line

is just insanely far from profitable.

The ticket revenues from these trains reportedly don't even cover the cost of electricity

for the line let alone construction and other operating costs.

So why would the Chinese government sink so much money into something that has no prospects

of really ever making money?

Well, politics.

Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang province.

While 92% of China's population is Han Chinese, the Xinjiang province is primarily Uyghur—one

of the minority ethnic groups of China—and there has been an ongoing fairly strong separatist

movement by the Uyghurs from China that has often turned violent.

The central government in Beijing, however, wants the Xinjiang province to be just as

integrated as the rest of the country and has tried a variety of methods to force this

including moving Han Chinese into the region and the imprisonment of Uyghurs in so-called

"reeducation camps."

The high-speed train is just the most recent tactic to bring Xinjiang closer to Beijing

and this is no secret.

The central government is fully upfront in saying that the line was built to promote,

as they call it, "ethnic unity."

This isn't even the first time they've used this tactic of railroad politics.

Tibet, a region even better known than Xinjiang for its independence movement, was the last

region in China not to have a railway due to its small population and intense terrain.

The central government still wanted to build one, though, to bring it closer to the rest

of the country and so they did.

Trains now run directly from Beijing to Lhasa, Tibet in 47 hours on the highest elevation

rail line in the world.

These trains reach an elevation of 16,640 feet—so high that passengers have to use

a direct oxygen supply.

Even the train to Hong Kong serves the central government's goal of further integrating

Hong Kong, which is an autonomous special administrative region, into mainland China.

While high-speed trains to Hong Kong certainly do make a lot more sense than trains to the

Xinjiang province, many Hong Kongers have not greeted the new service kindly as they

view it as an encroachment on the autonomy guaranteed to them by Hong Kong Basic Law.

The most controversial part has not been the fact that there's a train but rather that

the station in Hong Kong includes an area that is effectively now part of Mainland China

since people pass through border controls before boarding the train in Hong Kong.

Just like any country, what having a high-speed, efficient rail network in China is doing is

bringing the country together and making it stronger even if it's bringing together

people that want to stay apart.

No matter their motives, it's clear that China is building their high speed rail network

more efficiently than any other country.

To compare, this is the plan for California's high speed rail line from San Francisco to

the Los Angeles area.

It's currently in very early phases of construction and is expected to open by 2029.

Of course that means that the time it will take for the California's high speed rail

network to go from this to this is the same as the time it took China's high speed rail

network to go from this to this but, the main thing to look at is cost.

This Californian network is expected to cost $77 billion and is 520 miles long meaning

that it will cost $148 million per mile to build.

China, on the other hand, is building their network at a cost of only $30 million per

mile.

Of course labor costs are lower in China and their network crosses more rural areas where

land acquisition costs are lower but, what's more meaningful is that they've turned building

high speed rail into almost an assembly line process where they can mass produce even the

most expensive elements like viaducts and tunnels.

In true Chinese fashion, with scale they're making high-speed cheaper.

The big difference between China and a lot of the western world, particularly countries

like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, is that high speed rail is at

the top of the government's priorities.

Unsurprisingly given their government structure, in many ways, China has placed social benefit,

at least by the definition of the central government, ahead of profitability when developing

their high speed rail network.

High-speed rail lines just aren't as profitable as other means of transport like planes but

they are undoubtably better for countries so you have to consider the social benefit

when looking at their overall profitability.

For the San Francisco to LA high speed rail route, for example, one study found that the

social benefit derived from lower carbon emissions, higher worker productivity, and reduced casualties

from fewer people on the road would be equivalent to about $440 million per year.

As it turns out, this is almost the exact amount that the state will have to subsidize

the line for it to break even.

The China Railway Corporation, a state owned enterprise, is actually slightly profitable,

although it does have huge amounts of debts and is helped by government subsidies.

The benefit to the Chinese people, though, is huge.

The high-speed rail allows those who can't afford to live in the most expensive cities

like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou to easily commute from cheaper suburbs by high-speed

rail.

Thanks to the high-speed rail, there are now 75 million people who can commute to Shanghai

in under an hour.

It is growing what are already some of the largest cities and, when it comes to cities,

size is strength.

These lines connecting the east's largest cities are some of the most profitable rail

lines in the world and they're making living and working in China easier but the question

is, when we look back decades from now, whether the high-speed trains to smaller cities will

have made sense.

Out of a desire to keep the lines going straight between the big cities, the stops for smaller

cities are often out in the countryside dozens of miles away from the city core.

The high speed station for Hengyang, for example, a smaller city of only a million, is about

a 45 minute drive east of the city center.

The hope is that new development will spring up around the stations but this network structure,

even if it saves time on the train, wastes time before and after which degrades the benefit

of high-speed rail.

In all, China is really the first country to have experimented with long-distance, high

speed rail through less-dense areas in its west.

In the east, though, these trains are enlarging the country's economic power.

It's just one of the many factors speeding up China's catch-up with world's richest

countries.

Even though China is building these trains for less and innovating on the construction

of high-speed rail, the real reason why China is so good at building railways is because

they have the one thing that almost every other country lacks—the political will for

high-speed trains.

Why Investors Shouldn't Be Scared of the Next Bear Market - Duration: 7:38.

David Gardner: Great Quotation No. 1: This one comes from William Shakespeare.

I bet you've heard of him.

In fact, I hope you know that The Motley Fool's corporate name comes from Shakespeare.

That was from Act 2, Scene 7 of As You Like It, but this time I'm going to The Winter's Tale,

which is a tragicomedy. It's really one of my favorite plays of all of Shakespeare's.

It doesn't tend to get put on as often as something like Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet,

but The Winter's Tale [no spoilers!] starts with a tragic few acts and then ends with a comic few acts.

It's a wonderful story and one of Shakespeare's most famous stage directions is the quote

that I'm pulling from The Winter's Tale and here it is: "Exit, pursued by a bear."

There's some debate as to whether in Elizabethan times they used a real bear onstage to chase

Antigonus, the actor, who's exiting being pursued by a bear, or whether it was just

an actor in a bear costume.

And I'm sure in centuries since there's probably been a little bit of both.

I, personally, would love to see a live bear onstage, but not if you're Antigonus,

because Antigonus, as he gets chased off offstage, that's the last we ever see of him.

He is presumed dead, presumably by that bear.

But why would I lead off with "Exit, pursued by a bear," and call that a great quotation?

Well, in a little bit of, I would say, "linguistic leisure domain," I made this an epigraph in

the very first edition of The Motley Fool Investment Guide.

Now, an epigraph, as you may well know, is a quotation that will lead off a chapter,

or a section, or a part of a book, and I thought this is the perfect one to lead off our chapter

on selling stocks and selling strategy.

"Exit, pursued by a bear," because, of course, it's a wonderful pun on bear markets,

which is why I wanted to talk a little bit, here, at the outset of this podcast about bear markets.

You know, most bear markets last somewhere between 12 to 18 months.

They're much briefer than bull markets. Bull markets run over years.

Bear markets are usually counted in months, but as I've often said in the past,

stocks go down faster than they go up; and so, when bear markets strike, like a bear strikes with

its paw down, stocks go down and often a lot faster than you or I would like.

And I would say, right now, here at the end of October 2018, I think we might be in a bear market.

Now, how do I conclude that?

Well, I look at my own scorecard, picking stocks for Motley Fool Rule Breakers,

and I look back over the last several months, and each of my picks is down and losing to

the market, in some cases 20% or so.

And when I see stocks lose about one-fifth of their value and it's happening fairly consistently,

I start going, "Well, when did that start?"

And for me it was around mid-June, so doing quick math on my own family portfolio that

I manage, I'm down about 15% from June to this week.

So that's not a great performance.

That's definitely a time that I wish the market hadn't done that over the last several months.

Although when I look at the S&P 500, which is a broader market measure than my family

portfolio or your portfolio, I'll note that actually the market's about where it was as of June.

This week, as of mid-June, it really hasn't moved.

But it has surged higher than that in the meantime, and then fallen down over the last month.

So those keeping score at home looking at the broad market will note that over the last

30 days, the market's down about 7% as I tape this podcast, here, on Tuesday, October 23rd.

So I think, at least for me and my style, for the Rule Breaker Investing approach,

I think we're in a bear market right now. It's been lasting a few months.

Some of the damage has already been done and there will probably be some more damage done. We'll see.

I'm not one to make big market calls and I hope you realize that when I say that I think

we're in a bear market.

It doesn't change how I invest and I'm certainly not trying to alarm anyone.

And I'm also just guessing, because we really never know until we look back 12 or 18 months

later and say that was a bear market.

Of course, people are constantly predicting where the market will go and a lot of people

thought there would be a bear market in 2013, and 2014, and 2015, and then 2016 and then 2017 and 2018.

So there's always a lot of guesswork, but we really only know when

"Exit, pursued by a bear" matters; once it's already happened.

So I wanted to lead off with "Exit, pursued by a bear," because I think it's a great pun

for investors pulled right from my favorite playwright, William Shakespeare,

and I want to point out what actually ends up happening to Antigonus when he exits pursued by a bear and,

as I mentioned earlier, no spoilers really, but he'll never be seen again.

And I don't think that's a great outcome for you or me as investors.

So when I see a bear, I don't exit.

And I'm here to suggest that you should not exit, either, unless you're overinvested.

Unless you've borrowed on margin, which you should never have done according to us here

at The Motley Fool for the most part.

Or, if you really did need the money for something else like a home payment or something else

in the next three years.

We've always said here at Fool HQ -- we're now in our 26th year as a business of saying this --

that you as an investor should only have money in the stock market that you can

afford to lose and that you won't need for three-plus years, because the next three years

[any given three-year period] could be bad and I'd hate to think that you were risking

money that you actually needed for something else.

Of course, we're always playing the only game that counts, here, at The Motley Fool and

that is the long-term game.

So "Exit, pursued by a bear" is not only a fun pun uniting Shakespeare with investing,

but it's a warning to us as investors not to exit.

[With] most of the bears that you see over the course of your life -- and again, if you're

making a lifetime commitment to being invested in the stock market, which is, I think,

one of the best decisions you can make [and history and data proves that out] -- then you'll recognize

that with almost every bear you see, you should stay on stage.

Before I go to Great Quotation No. 2, I should mention that I think a lot of people, in particular

in recent years, have feared a bear market because they think it could be really bad. And why is that?

Well, the last couple of bear markets have historically been horrible [2008-2009 and then, of course, 2001].

Those two markets [the Great Recession and then the dot.com bomb] really saw the markets

lose about half their value and in some cases more if you're counting the Nasdaq.

Great companies like Amazon -- I remember back in 2001-2002 -- went from like $95 in 2000

down to $7 at its bottom and I think in 2001 the numbers are right around there.

But my point is that was a drastic drop in one of the great companies of our time,

and I think it's easy to be looking in the rearview mirror and think that's what bear markets look like.

But that's really not the case.

So I think people are probably overrating and a little bit too afraid of the idea of

the next recession or the next bear market. A thought.

How Does Spotify Work? Does it Make Money? - Duration: 2:21.

Chris Hill: Spotify, which surprised Wall Street by reporting a profit in the third quarter.

The stock was still down this week, though, Ron.

Ron Gross: Yeah, because they don't really make money.

[laughs] The only reason they were profitable is because of their investment in Tencent Music Entertainment.

They got to goose up the value of that, which led to a paper profit.

But they're not profitable because of what they actually do.

In fact, they reported net losses every year since they launched in 2008.

What do you do with that? At some point, they've got to make money.

Listeners will recall, they went public back in April in a new way.

They went a direct listing approach, rather than using underwriters, which people thought

"Maybe this is the new wave of going public." I don't think, necessarily, we've seen that yet.

But this was a way for investors in the company to get liquidity.

As a result, now it's a public company.

They've got good subscriber growth, but they did have to pare back on guidance with respect to that.

They pared back on guidance with respect to gross margins.

They just can't seem to flow money to the bottom line.

Hill: They have nearly 200 million monthly active users.

What is wrong with this business, that they can't make money, Jason?

Jason Moser: Because they have a pretty compelling free offering, actually.

I use Spotify, but I never pay for it.

With Spotify, we learned some lessons going into that IPO.

I think Snap is another good example of learning some lessons going into that IPO.

We paid attention to Facebook and Twitter, and I think we learned a lot from that to

get an idea of what might happen with Snap.

With Spotify, we could look back to Pandora at least to get some idea as to the economics

of that business, and what they would have to do to make any really meaningful money

over the long haul. The economics of the music business are just really bad.

They could probably have a user base of 300 million, but I'm not necessarily sure that

makes for such an attractive investment.

It just goes to show that there are cases where it can be a great product or service

for consumers that doesn't necessarily translate its way into good investment for investors.

KFC and Taco Bell Keep Yum! Brands Humming Along - Duration: 5:01.

Chris Hill: Shares of Yum! Brands

got close to an all-time high this week after third quarter profits and revenue

came in higher than expected.

Once again, Jason, we saw KFC and Taco Bell doing the heavy lifting, making up for weakness at Pizza Hut.

Jason Moser: The old saying goes, two out of three ain't bad.

That's essentially Yum!'s quarter in a taco shell. A crunchy taco shell.

Yeah, KFC and Taco Bell continue to shine. Taco Bell is about 30% of total operating profit.

System sales grew 8%.

KFC, which is essentially half of the company's operating profit, was another source of strength

with same-store sales growth of 3%. If you also recall, earlier in the year, Yum!

Brands made an investment in Grubhub.

They bought $200 million worth of stock from Grubhub.

That gave Grubhub some much needed capital, also tied the two together to really focus

on getting more sales out there, in regard to KFC and Taco Bell.

Pizza Hut is the -- Ron Gross: Worst pizza around.

Moser: It's not good pizza, I'm not going to lie.

They have some work to do, no question.

It seems like an opportune time, given Papa John's weakness.

Hill: I was just going to say, given everything that has happened over the past 12 months

with Papa John's, how is Pizza Hut not taking advantage of this?

Moser: I think this time next year, we'll have a better idea.

That's mainly because they've taken over as the NFL's main sponsor.

That has the potential to really help them get this thing going back in the right direction.

But we're not going to know for at least a little while.

To Ron's point, they could probably focus on improving that product a little bit.

Gross: You don't like ketchup on bread? Matt Argersinger: [laughs] Oh, gosh, harsh!

Moser: It's not my thing.

It's worth noting, they've essentially reached their goal of 98% franchised operations.

Management is committed to giving back $6.5-7 billion to shareholders through 2019 via repurchases

and dividends. As a quick-service restaurant, the pizza is not the best in the world.

I don't ever eat at Taco Bell, and I can't remember the last time I ate at KFC.

But apparently, people are going there, because they're chalking up a lot of sales.

Gross: And because KFC's delicious. Moser: I would push back on that one.

Hill: Do you know what else Taco Bell does a really good job of? They do a really good job with promotional items.

One of the things that came out in this quarter was, the nacho fries promotion --

which I did not partake in, and apparently, I was in the minority, because that was involved

in more than a quarter of every ticket they had.

Moser: Hey, let's relive that Red Sox victory one more time.

Remember when Mookie Betts stole second base?

They're giving away a free Doritos taco or whatever it was.

So, I have to imagine some people went in there and took advantage of that, as well.

Argersinger: I love the Mookie!

Hill: Shake Shack falling more than 11% on Friday after a weak third quarter report with

negative comps, Ron.

Gross: The report wasn't horrible, but those top line numbers certainly scare investors

when you have a stock that's priced pretty to perfection.

Comp store sales down 0.7%, which is actually an improvement from the 1.6% decline last quarter.

Silver lining there. A 4% decrease in guest traffic.

I'm no analyst, but I think you probably don't want to see that at a restaurant.

They had revenue up 26.5%. That's largely because they keep opening new stores.

They did raise full-year revenue outlook, which is interesting based on those metrics

that I just went through. That's curious. They'll continue to open new stores.

They expect to open 36-40 additional stores in 2019. That will continue to drive revenue.

We obviously need to see this filtering down into margins and earnings.

Hill: Let me go back to Taco Bell for a second. You look at Shake Shack, they make a good product.

But from a business standpoint, they don't appear anytime soon to be employing any sort

of a promotional strategy in the same way that Taco Bell does, whether it's discounting

or any sort of one-time items.

To your point about them raising guidance, I'm not entirely sure what rabbit they're

going to pull out of their hat to make that happen.

Gross: A Shake Shack opened around the corner from my house.

I've seen no promotion whatsoever. You drive by, you see it, or you don't.

You either go in or you don't. I've seen nothing about it.

Moser: And you know how that ends. Chipotle ran their business very much that way for a long time.

Eventually, something slips, and you've got to start promoting.

Argersinger: Even after Friday's big fall in the stock price, the market cap of the

company is still about $1.8 billion. That means each of the 180 Shacks is valued at $10 million.

Gross: That's high.

Argersinger: Ron is here throwing out negative comps, and I'm thinking to myself, "How in

the world could each Shack be worth $10 million?" That's a little high.

Try These Exercises Recommended for Hypertension

To lower blood pressure and keep it at healthy levels it's essential to avoid being sedentary.

It's also beneficial to begin some type of regular physical activity for at least an hour a day to improve hypertension.

Being sedentary is one of the biggest causes of the increase in cases of hypertension worldwide. Hypertension now occurs with more frequency and more and more at any earlier age.

Because of this, the importance of adopting healthy life habits as a form of prevention has emerged. .

Even though the usual treatment is to use drugs, there are also exercises recommended for hypertension.

Introducing physical activity to daily life habits can bring on a significant change.

Even though the probability of having high blood pressure increases with age, exercise can act as a preventative measure.

If someone already has hypertension,  an exercise routine can be the key to control it.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Hypertension Society emphasize the importance of physical activity.

Having a daily exercise routine is the best measure, to lower blood pressure, not medication.

Exercises recommended for hypertension.

When talking about exercising you don't always have to think about the gym or lifting weights.

Daily activities such as trimming trees, raking leaves, or scrubbing floors are also beneficial.

Cardiovascular exerciseUsing the stairs instead of the elevator is a good physical activity for our heart.

Walking to do your daily activities instead of driving the car also is one of the recommended exercises to lower blood pressure.

Early morning walks or evening walks are a good way to meditate and rest the mind, apart from being good exercise.

Running is a good activity to control blood pressure. If you haven't done this before, it's good to get a check up from your doctor.

Then you can ask his or her opinion about this activity.

Riding a bicycle is a healthy activity that helps to regulate blood pressure.

It strengthens your cardiovascular system, activates your metabolism and increases the capacity of your immune system.

Other beneficial activities.

Dancing is also one of the best exercises to lower blood pressure.

It's healthy, entertaining and fun.

You move your entire body, it improves circulation, and it helps to burn fat.

Stretching your legs helps to avoid over taxing your heart.

Stretching exercises help to release tension in your legs that can block the circulation of the blood.

Swimming is highly beneficial to the body. It's always been recommended to improve the spinal column, muscles and joints.

It's also an activity that helps to strengthen the cardiovascular system.

Although we have been talking about physical activity, it's also important to end each exercise session with a relaxing exercise.

One minute of meditation contributes a lot to improve levels of blood pressure.

Why it's good to exercise to lower blood pressure.

Aerobic activity not only improves levels of blood pressure, but it also improves general health.

Physical activity improves blood flow and this allows for more oxygen to reach the tissues.

At the same time, it helps to eliminate fluid that can be retained in the body.

A week-long exercise routine decreases the probability of strokes, heart attacks, and other conditions that could prove lethal.

Doing these recommended exercises to lower blood pressure helps to decrease the levels of stress and anxiety.

These two factors are keys in the presence of elevated levels of blood pressure.

Experts recommend at least thirty minutes of physical activity daily.

At the same time, you should reduce your sedentary time by alternating it with simple movements.

This can be as easy as getting up and walking to get a glass of water; any physical activity that you can add to your daily life is always a help.

Final considerations.

Normal levels of blood pressure are 120 mmHg (systolic) and 80 mmHg (diastolic).

When blood pressure is 140/90, it's considered hypertension.

That's why it's important to be checked regularly.

High blood pressure is a silent killer; it doesn't show symptoms and the consequences can be deadly.

The best weapons against hypertension are prevention and exercise.

Cannabis Stocks: Which Marijuana Companies Are Worth Watching? - Duration: 9:45.

Alison Southwick: Are there a couple of specific company names or stocks that you want to put

out there for any listeners that want to start looking into the industry?

David Kretzmann: Sure.

[Within] the initial companies that we've recommended to people as buy recommendations,

we have the pure plays.

These are companies that generate the majority of the revenue from cannabis in some shape or form.

We then have picks and shovels companies.

Picks and shovels companies we have identified as companies that have a strong, underlying

core business that isn't in cannabis, but then the potential opportunity with cannabis

is an add-on, or a cherry on top, but it isn't the main thesis behind buying the company.

Starting with a picks and shovels company, I think Constellation Brands is a company

that some people will be familiar with.

If people have followed this space at all, you might have seen them in the headlines.

This is the company behind Corona, the beer, and then a variety of other wine and spirit

brands that they have in their portfolio.

They've been one of the better-performing alcoholic beverage companies in the past several years;

unlike some of the other bigger players.

Last year they invested a smaller amount into Canopy Growth, which is one of the larger

cannabis producers in Canada.

Then in August Constellation Brands re-upped that investment in a huge way.

They invested an additional $4 billion into Canopy Growth, taking 38% control of Canopy

for the seven board seats.

Essentially Canopy Growth, today, is the cannabis offshoot of Constellation Brands.

To put that number in perspective, in the first half of 2018, every single cannabis company,

public and private, around the world had raised $4.3 billion.

That's the first half of this year, so in a single day, Canopy Growth essentially raised

the same amount that every other company had raised.

This just puts Constellation and Canopy Growth on a whole other level compared to other companies.

So from a picks and shovels angle, I like Constellation Brands because this is a company

that pays a dividend.

They generate an increasing amount of free cash flow, so it's a healthy business.

They have a strong core business, but they're also making a fairly aggressive push into cannabis.

During the announcement of this investment, they said that they expect the legal cannabis market,

on a global scale, to hit $200 billion by 2030, so they see this being a big opportunity

and they're making a substantial bet on it. That would be the type of company that I start with.

It's a business that's easy to understand.

You can see where cannabis could complement Constellation Brands because they have a lot

of experience building brands and distribution with a highly regulated product like alcoholic

beverages, and it makes sense that they could transfer that knowledge over to cannabis

in the coming years.

And I like the fact that they're taking a long-term approach to this.

They're not investing cannabis to juice their share price in the short term.

They're very much thinking of this from a decade-long perspective, and I think that's

the right way, as Foolish investors, we should be thinking.

With pure play companies, these are obviously much riskier companies.

Like I said earlier, a lot of these companies are burning cash, they're unprofitable,

and the valuations are likely going to be very lofty no matter which way you slice it.

But one company that I do like that's a pure play cannabis producer in Canada is a company

called CannTrust. This is a company that's still valued at over $1 billion.

Their revenue over the past year is still pretty minimal, but they've registered among

the most medical cannabis patients in Canada compared to the other bigger producers.

And even though their valuation does sound lofty -- like $1 billion for a company that

generated about $30 million in revenue over the past year), that valuation's actually

really attractive compared to Canopy Growth, or Tilray, or Aurora Cannabis, or some of

these other bigger players.

I'm not making a valuation argument, necessarily, but compared to some of these other bigger players,

I think it is a more attractive price.

They also have a partnership in place with Breakthru Beverage, with is one of the largest

private companies in the U.S. and that's a company that is one of the leading beverage

distributors in North America.

So in the coming years, potentially, CannTrust will be able to plug its cannabis products

into that distribution network of Breakthru Beverage. It's a founder-led company.

They have a healthy balance sheet.

Again, this is one where it would still be incredibly volatile, but I like the approach

the company is taking.

When I spoke to their president this summer, he said, "In 18 months or so, I hope

that we're not in the business of growing cannabis."

Because when you think about it, no one cares about who grows the coffee for Starbucks or

the tomatoes for Heinz. People are really just interested in the end product.

So the long-term vision for CannTrust, and also some of these other companies, is really

in building brands, because at the end of the day when you're dealing with what could

potentially become a commoditized crop like cannabis, the greatest value to be captured

will be from the companies that can build those brands that resonate with the end consumers.

So just as you see Anheuser-Busch or Budweiser with alcohol, or Starbucks with coffee,

or Heinz with tomatoes, I think you're going to see, in the coming years and decades,

some pretty powerful global brands be built in a similar way around cannabis and I like the

approach that CannTrust is taking to get there.

It's not a slam dunk that they will, but I do like the approach that they're taking.

So that's one that I look at as a promising pure play company.

Southwick: What if I just want an ETF? Kretzmann: There are a few ETFs out there.

Again, limited track records, there, because there hasn't been much of a track record

to have in this industry.

The one danger with the ETFs is that they're often highly concentrated in the bigger players,

and I would say that most, if not all, of the bigger players are trading at some frothy

valuations at potentially unsustainable levels. So you still want to understand what you're buying.

I wouldn't blindly buy an ETF.

First you'd want to see what their concentration is in the top 10 holdings -- what those companies are --

and if you're comfortable with the idea of having the majority of that ETF be

in some of those bigger players.

For me, personally, if you are looking to get exposure to this category, start with

a company like Constellation Brands, a more established multinational company that is

looking to make some investments in the category.

And then if nothing else, the approach that we're taking, here, at The Motley Fool with

our cannabis-investing recommendation service is we're almost building our own ETF; so recognizing

that this is a type of industry and given that it is at such an early stage where there

will be plenty of losers in the coming years. You're going to see some consolidation.

You'll see some companies that fail to gain traction or just won't be able to raise cash and they'll go bust.

But the thesis that we have, here, is that there will be eventual long-term winners in

the category, and that a majority of the gains will likely come from a small number of winners.

It's almost like approaching a venture capitalist where you're making a series of small bets.

You recognize that probably at least half of those bets won't work out, like the way

you hoped, but there will be one or two big winners that more than make up for the losers.

So with an ETF, you might be able to capture that, but I think over the long term if you

are interested in the space, it makes a little more sense to build a diversified portfolio

among a few of the players and go with that approach.

But to each their own. I would just tread carefully with the ETF approach.

Robert Brokamp: If someone's interested in this, how much of their portfolio do you think

they should devote to these types of companies?

Kretzmann: It should definitely be a small part of your overall portfolio.

Obviously, each person, circumstances, and risk tolerance will be different.

I've personally invested in all 10 or eventually 13 of our recommendations by the time this

podcast is released, so I've invested my own money in the companies that we've recommended

in this space to our members; but I just started with about five percent of my overall portfolio. I'm young.

I am adding more money regularly to my investments, so that's the type of risk that I can afford to take.

Even though 20-40% swings in these stocks, especially the pure plays, isn't all that uncommon

-- it's actually probably more than the norm rather than the exception --

for someone who's in or near retirement, or if they're not adding a lot of money to their investments,

you just want to take a step back and really be sure anything that you

put into the cannabis stocks should be money that you certainly won't need in the next

five years, and shouldn't be a substantial part of your overall portfolio.

I would say when in doubt, start small. There's no rush.

The way that we're approaching it is this will be something that unfolds in the coming

years and decades, and there will certainly be a lot of peaks and valleys along the way.

We'll have a lot of hype like we had around October 17 and legalization day in Canada.

I'm sure if and when the U.S. federal government decriminalizes cannabis on a federal level,

that will be a huge catalyst for the industry, but when in doubt, start small.

Build Muscle Mass and Burn Fat with These Quick Tips|HFE♪ - Duration: 9:38.

Build Muscle Mass and Burn Fat with These Quick Tips

Although it may seem to be of secondary importance, sleeping well is essential to promote the recovery and regeneration of the muscular microfibers that are broken during training.

Up until a few years ago, weight loss goals were focused on adopting dietary plans and fat-burning exercises, rather than building muscle mass.

For a long time, low-calorie diets and aerobic exercises were the main approaches to fighting excess weight.

Although these are still options for weight loss, currently many people prefer plans that enable muscle mass gain.

Because these plans not only help you to achieve a slimmer figure but also firm up the muscles and increase physical strength.

However, this is a long and difficult process, for which it is necessary to step up your effort and be constant with it.

Although some people achieve results more easily, depending on their genetics, in general it is necessary to make lifestyle changes to achieve this goal.

For this reason, in this article we want to share with you 5 main keys to not fail in the attempt.

Put them into practice!.

Do aerobic and anaerobic exercises.

Combining aerobic and anaerobic exercises significantly contributes to increasing the muscle mass of the body while reducing the fat index.

Aerobic exercises are carried out at low to medium intensity over long periods of time in order to be effective at burning fats.

On the other hand, anaerobic activities are done at higher intensity for shorter periods of time, focusing more on muscle work.

The latter, among other things, continue to have an effect after the training, helping to prolong fat burning for up to 24 hours.

The result of this combination is, without a doubt, a slimmer and more toned figure.

Recommendations.

A cardio session should not last longer than 20 minutes to avoid the effects of excessive physical training.

Anaerobic exercises should be carried out according to your physical ability.

Increasing muscle mass is achieved in stages, so it's no good rushing it.

Lifting weights without being strong enough can cause injuries and lead to failure.

Increase your protein intake.

A diet to increase muscle mass requires lots of essential nutrients.

However, of these, it is important to highlight proteins given the role they play in the process of building and strengthening the muscles.

We obtain from proteins the amino acids which contribute to stimulating the processes of muscle formation.

Eating them after training helps to regenerate broken musclemicrofibers.

They are an important source of energy which also, as if this weren't enough, helps to maintain good sports performance.

Recommendations.

While protein is available in many supplements, the best option is to get the majority of your intake from foods like:.

Fish and seafood Beef Pork Seeds and dried fruit Pulses Vegetables Eggs.

Eat carbohydrates.

When it comes to losing weight, many people doubt eating carbohydrates.

They were given a bad image for years and, in fact, they were largely excluded from diets.

The truth is that, contrary to what many still think, carbohydrates are necessary for both losing weight and gaining muscle mass.

The important thing is to choose carbohydrates which, as well as giving your body energy, support the metabolism and the penetration of proteins into the muscle cells.

Recommendations.

You should completely avoid carbohydrates from refined foods and instead eat:.

Oats Rice Wholemeal bread and pasta Potatoes Beans Quinoa.

Sleep well.

Poor sleep quality can interfere negatively with the recovery and regeneration processes of the muscular microfibers which get broken during training.

For this reason, so that this lapse doesn't last longer than necessary, and in order to maintain good muscle and metabolic health, it is necessary to respect your hours of sleep.

Recommendations.

Sleep for between 7 and 8 hours a day without interruptions, regardless of what time you train.

Eat a light dinner, low in calories, before going to sleep.

Eat 5 meals a day.

Both to burn fat and to increase muscle mass, it is advisable to eat 5 meals a day, in moderate portions, instead of 3 large main meals.

This helps improve the activity of the metabolism, maintaining continuous energy expenditure, which reduces the tendency to accumulate fats.

Recommendations.

Design 5 meals in small portions, based on healthy foods with controlled amounts of calories.

Eat more fruit, vegetables and dried fruits as snacks at moments of anxiety.

Is increasing muscle mass among your plans? Bear in mind that, to see results, you need to design a plan which will enable you to get rid of the fat accumulated in your body.

Follow all the recommendations given above and, if possible, get the advice of a trainer to find out which is the best plan for you depending on your abilities and needs.

If you have a handful of people at your side that do the things that we are going to list, you are very lucky!.

Increase your self-esteem.

When you are feeling down, they let you vent, scream, cry or talk for hours.

And, at the end, they highlight all of your abilities and positive aspects so that you can feel better. A good friend is always looking to boost your self-esteem and mood, even in your worse moments.

They support you.

Regardless of your decisions, they are always there to accompany you on the path that you choose, even if they don't agree with it.

They give you their support through a message, an afternoon together, a hug or through some gesture, like a gift or card.

They listen to you 100%.

This is another one of the main characteristics of true friends.

When we say that they "listen to you," we are referring to them paying attention to everything that you say, whether it be repetitive, pessimistic, if you are overflowing with happiness or filled with anger.

True friends can spend hours by your side (or on the other end of the phone) listening to you complain, insult someone, laugh, tell a story with a lot of detail, etc.

They make you feel comfortable.

When you are with a great friend, it isn't necessary to pretend to be someone that you are not. When you are with true friends, you don't have to fake anything or try to impress them.

With them, you can talk without watching what you say, you can show them who you really are and actually feel comfortable, just like at home, without masks.

They help you.

When you have to make an important decision and you are not sure of it, you probably call your best friend so that they can give you their opinion.

Or maybe, when you have to do something that you do not feel prepared for, you seek the help of that special person.

True friends give us valuable recommendations that come from their perception of the situation.

They lend us an ear, their hugs, a hand and their feet when we need them.

Also, they help us to find ourselves again when we are feeling a little lost. If things aren't good, for whatever reason, they are our "rock.".

They make time for you.

True friends don't give us excuses when it comes to spending time together or talking, since they always want to hangout with us.

It's true that we all have our own obligations, work and things to do; but you will realize that if the friendship is real, that friend will always find time to see you.

Some phrases that true friends use:.

"I have 15 minutes to go for coffee between work and class." "I have to go to the doctor's.

When I leave, I'll stop by you house to say hi." "Don't make plans for Thursday night, we're going out to eat.".

On the contrary, if someone is always busy, always cancels plans or always makes it impossible to hangout, it might be that this person is not interested in making time for your friendship. It isn't anything bad, maybe they are going through a difficult time.

But it is most likely that you shouldn't consider this person an unconditional friend. .

They tell you the truth.

It is very important that you surround yourself with people who are honest and sincere. That is because it doesn't do you any good to be surrounded by people who only tell you what you want to here.

If a dress doesn't look good on you, a real friend will tell you.

Just like if they think that your boyfriend/girlfriend isn't right for you, they won't be able to hide it.

Also, if they think that you are making a bad decision, they will be the first to tell you.

Sincerity is very important in a relationship (friendship, partners, at work).

Because of that, it is worth it to have friends that always tell you the truth, even if it hurts.

They respect you.

True friends don't "chain" you to them so that you are always by their side.

They understand that you have other things to do and other people that you need to spend time with.

Also, they respect you if you want to be alone, for whatever reason. Respect is very important in a friendship. That includes, among other things, respecting one's personal space.

They forgive you.

A real friend knows that you are a human being and that you can make mistakes.

Because of that, if you show that you regret something that you said or did, they won't have any issue forgiving you. True friendship includes forgiving mistakes, forgiving them from the heart and prioritizing the great relationship and the time you share. .

They make you a better person.

If you want to gave true friends, you have to learn to give. That is because you cannot receive what you are not willing to give.

Friendship doesn't work if only one person is giving an effort, both people are responsible for its growth and the development of its emotional ties.

This applies to any type of relationship: partners, family, work environments, etc.

In the case of true friends, if you want to keep them by your side, you have to work at it. This means that you can't always be the one who talks, you also have to listen.

That you have to be respectful and honest, that you have to help them to be a better person.

That you have to be by their side in any situation and offer them your point of view to help with their growth.

So, if you do everything that we have mentioned for your friends, you will become someone that they can trust and that they always want to spend time with.

SPLAT! for Math in the BPS - Duration: 6:12.

[UPBEAT MUSIC]

Hi, I'm Connie Henry from the K-12 Mathematics Office at Boston Public Schools.

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Splat, a highly engaging mathematical routine, and

give you a quick overview about how it works.

Splat was created by Steve Wyborney. You can go to his blog at www.stevewyborney.com to download the files.

On his site, you will find the original Splat series, as well Fractions and Nested Splats.

Many of the downloadables can be used with Microsoft's PowerPoint application and Google Slides.

If you don't have Microsoft Office on your L4L, check-out our tech tip video about your

options for using Office and how you can download the Office Suite.

So what is Splat!?! Splat is a classroom routine that supports students to reason about number

and to discuss and justify their thinking.

It uses visual representations and asks probing questions about how numbers can be composed and decomposed.

Splat provides challenges for students in the elementary grades, beginning with Kindergarten,

through the secondary grades. Each actual splat represents an unknown quantity.

Let's take a look at a couple of examples.

Splat includes 50 downloadables and are broken up into 10 levels. Let's take a quick look

at level 2, which uses numbers 12-20.

In lesson 2.2, students are first shown 17 blue dots. As you advance to the next slide,

SPLAT, some dots are covered up.

8 dots are still shown and others are now hidden. Students are then given an opportunity

to solve for the unknown and discuss their ideas.

As you advance to the next slide, the answer is revealed. In this case, 9.

These slides help highlight the relationship between the operations of addition and subtraction.

Let's take a look at a quick example from lesson 5.1. Here we see 10 blue dots.

Splat, two different color Splats appear. Each color represents a different unknown quantity.

The problem is now more complex as students try to figure out what two different quantities

plus 3 equal 10.

What are some ways students might solve for that equation? During the first reveal, students

see that one of the unknowns is 3 dots.

Now they have more information to solve for the other splat. During the next reveal, we

see that 3 + 4 + 3 = 10.

What might they learn from the picture? How might they better understand the idea of variables

within a simple equation?

Let's take a quick look at lesson 11.1 in which fractions are introduced.

Here we see the number 4 shown as 3 whole blue dots and four one fourths shown in red.

After the Splat covers some of the total, we only see two whole dots and ¼ of a dot.

Students must use what they know to solve for what is under the Splat.

The visual representation of 2 and ¼ helps guide them to find the missing addend.

During the reveal, they can also revise and discuss their thinking as needed.

As they experience different splats from this series, they can deepen their understanding

of working with whole numbers and fractions.

Let's take a look at Splat in action.

(Teacher off camera: I think I heard a lot of people saying the same number.)

On the count of 3, let's say it. 1..2..3..

(Students answer: 9!)

Not talking to your neighbor just yet, I want you to first think to yourself how many dots

the Splat is covering.

(Students answering: Ahhh, 4…3…3…3)

Who picked 3 that can tell me why it might be 3 that the Splat is covering?

(Student: If the Splat is covering 3, then it will be 6.)

You know what you just did without even realizing it? You were doing subtraction!

(Student: What's subtraction?) Subtraction is—that's going to be our

next math unit.

Subtraction is when you take away, So she said how many dots were there? 9.

9, take away, how many did the Splat take away? 3. Equals 6.

Splat helps students to think algebraically and develop fluency with number combinations.

The lessons are fun and engaging and they are free to download.

Give Splat a try in your math classroom! Thanks for watching!

Three Fatal Errors at the End of a Relationship|HFE♪ - Duration: 7:46.

Three Fatal Errors at the End of a Relationship

Although it's been part of your life, after breaking up you shouldn't try to keep the same relationship with your ex-partner, otherwise it will be impossible to turn the page.

We all make many mistakes, but there are some very grave ones that we're often not aware of at the end of a relationship.

Some of them are inevitable.

Emotions play tricks on us and we also depend a lot on the circumstances we're in to put an end to the relationship.

After all, ending a relationship because the love is gone or the passion has been definitely extinguished is not the same as if there has been an infidelity or a very painful betrayal.

Today, we'll take a look at three mistakes we make at the end of a relationship.

Familiarizing ourselves with them and reflecting on them will help you not to commit them again and to see the situation from new perspectives.

You're not able to turn the page.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make at the end of a relationship is to keep your ex-partner someone important and present in your life.

It's difficult to get rid of someone with whom you have shared experiences and even years of your life.

You've become accustomed to their presence and both of you will have adopted certain routines.

Now that they're not there, you feel like you're on a tightrope.

However, the sooner you turn the page the better. You have to accept that the relationship is over, that there is no going back and that your life goes on.

You have a lot to experience!.

Staying anchored in the past will cause you to suffer in vain and not be able to continue enjoying life.

So how can you act to change this situation?.

You have time for yourself, so take advantage of it. Do everything that you didn't do with your partner, look for new hobbies, go out more with your friends and see more of your family.

Adopt new routines such as walking or running very early in the morning, having a coffee alone in that cafe that you like so much while reading the newspaper … Whatever! Think of yourself, take care of yourself and love yourself.

It's a mistake to believe that your ex-partner will keep an eye on you. Why don't you start being aware of yourself? You've probably forgotten a bit about yourself since you've been in a relationship.

You expect something from your ex-partner.

At the end of a relationship you may not be aware of it, but you expect something to be returned to you by your ex-partner.

It may be some small proof that your ex-partner had really loved you when they were with you, that they intend to keep contact or that they care about you.

This is nothing more than the huge fear you have of letting go.

The big mistake of expecting something from the other person is that you don't give them the time they need to go through their own grief.

You may keep talking to them, you may share their feelings and, without realizing it, you overwhelm them.

It's clear that you need to express yourself with someone who understands you.

However, both of you need to be alone and let go in order to move forward.

Imagine that your ex-partner has no interest in listening to you.

Think if they did the same to you, would you be bored by what they wanted to tell you?.

Keep all this in mind, because perhaps your intention to wait for something is the result of your sadness at the end of the relationship.

Your ex is the protagonist in your conversations.

Another of the big mistakes at the end of a relationship is to keep your ex as the main subject of all your conversations.

It's clear that you have to vent and talk about the subject.

But is repeating it a thousand times really going to help? Is it a good idea to complain about what can no longer be solved?.

Doing this will prevent you from getting over the break up by keeping someone present who is no longer part of your life.

Another way to keep your ex-partner present is to cling to everything that reminds you of them.

A serious mistake that will make your pain last.

Have you committed any of these mistakes at the end of a relationship? Trying not to fall into these traps will reduce the time you need to get over a break up.

Let's stop clinging to something that's over.

It'll only hurt us.
