>> WE'RE TALKING ABOUT YOUR WIFE

AND THE THOUGHT THAT YOU -- YOU

DON'T WANT TO CONTINUE TO LOAD

HER WITH THINGS, YOU WANT TO BE

ABLE TO GIVE BACK THE LOVE, AND

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE STRENGTH THAT

SHE GAVE YOU.

WHAT'S SOMETHING IN YOUR MIND

THAT WE REFLECT ON WHEN YOU TALK

ABOUT THAT?

>> I MEAN, JUST -- JUST THE FACT

THAT SOMEBODY CAN BE DOWN WITH

YOU FOR 20 YEARS.

YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING, THAT'S

REAL LOVE.

REAL FRIENDSHIP.

AND WE'VE REALLY BEEN TOGETHER

SINCE WE WERE KIDS, WE WATCHED

EACH OTHER GROW AND EVOLVE LIKE

EVEN THE FIRST TIME I EVER GOT A

REAL JOB IN RADIO, I DIDN'T EVEN

HAVE A LICENSE AT THE TIME, SHE

DROVE ME DOWN TO THE RADIO

STATION WHEN I WAS THERE, AND I

FILLED OUT AN APPLICATION TO BE

IN THE PROMOTIONS DEPARTMENT OR

SOMETHING LIKE THAT, IT'S JUST

LIKE -- YOU KNOW, FOR ME.

EVERYTHING I WASN'T -- YOU KNOW,

FOR YEARS.

I WANT TO BE THAT TIMES TEN NOW.

>> DO YOU FEEL DESERVING OF THE

LOVE THAT SHE GIVES YOU?

>> NO.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

NOT EVEN -- NOT EVEN REMOTELY.

I FEEL LIKE THAT -- I'VE BEEN

FEELING LIKE THAT LATELY,

THOUGH.

ABOUT THIS -- A LOT OF STUFF IN

GENERAL.

>> NOT DESERVING?

>> YEAH.

LIKE OUR -- WHY.

I QUESTION MYSELF OFTEN LIKE

WHY?

WHY ME, WHY AM I IN THIS

POSITION?

YOU KNOW, WHY DID THIS HAPPEN TO

ME.

I THINK ABOUT MY MOM, MY MOM

MADE -- THE MOST SHE TOLD ME SHE

MADE WAS $30,000 A YEAR AS A

SCHOOLTEACHER.

A SCHOOLTEACHER IN SOUTH

CAROLINA, THE PERSON YOU ENTRUST

YOUR KIDS WITH EVERY DAY.

THAT'S SUPPOSED TO HELP EVOLVE

YOUR KIDS WHEN IT COMES TO

EDUCATION, $30,000.

WHAT DO I REALLY DO?

I -- I ALWAYS FEEL LIKE THAT

OFTEN.

I'M NOT DESERVING OF ANY OF THE

LOVE, HONESTLY, TRUTH BE TOLD.

I'M NOT ONE OF THESE PEOPLE THAT

SAYS, YOU GOT TO LOVE ME.

I KNOW WHY YOU LOVE ME, TRUST

ME, I DON'T.

I'LL BE LOOKING AROUND SOMETIMES

LIKE WHY?

MAYBE I'M JUST MORE COMFORTABLE

WITH THE HATE, SO TO SPEAK.

LIKE LOVE IS AN ACHILLES HEAL

FOR ME.

THAT CAN DISARM ME NAST.

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, NO, I

DON'T FEEL LIKE I'M DESERVING.

>> YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE YOU'RE

DESERVING OF A LOT OF THINGS.

ON THE CONTRARY, WHAT DO YOU

THINK YOU DESERVE?

>> I DON'T KNOW.

THAT'S THE GREAT QUESTION.

I'M JUST SAYING I QUESTION IT

ALL, WHY I'M GETTING THE SUPPORT

I DO.

WHY I GET THE LOVE I DO.

SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE CERTAIN

THINGS ARE BIGGER THAN ME.

LIKE EVEN IN THIS MOMENT RIGHT

NOW.

I DON'T -- IT FEELS LIKE AN OUT

OF BODY EXPERIENCE TO BE HONEST

WITH YOU.

SO IT'S LIKE --

>> THIS MOMENT WE'RE HAVING

HERE?

>> YEAH.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> 100%.

BUT THIS IS JUST -- THIS IS --

THESE ARE THINGS I QUESTION

MYSELF ABOUT, I CONSTANTLY

QUESTION, WHAT AM I HERE FOR?

WHAT AM I ULTIMATELY DOING AT

THE END OF THE DAY?

I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING THAT

DOESN'T HAVE PURPOSE.

SO MAYBE THAT'S -- MAYBE THAT'S

WHAT IT IS, MAYBE I FEEL LIKE

I'VE BEEN DOING THINGS WITH NO

PURPOSE FOR A LONG TIME.

>> BUT YOU HAVE DESCRIBED

ALREADY DURING THE SESSION THAT

YOU HAVE HELPED PROPEL CAREERS

FOR BLACK WOMEN OR YOU'RE

SUPPORTING THEM.

SO I'M NOT SEEING WHAT YOU'RE

SAYING --

>> I DON'T THINK ABOUT THAT,

THOUGH.

THAT'S NOT SOMETHING I -- I'M

NOT INTENTIONAL WITH THAT, I

DON'T SIT THERE AND WRITE THAT

DOWN, I NEED TO BE REWARDED FOR

THAT.

I DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT, I'M

SUPPOSED TO BE DOING.

YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST LIKE, IT'S

LIKE APPLAUDING THE MAN FOR

SAYING, I TAKE CARE OF MY KIDS.

YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO.

YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO TAKE CARE OF

YOUR PEOPLE.

I LIKE TO THROW MORE ASSISTS

THAN SCORE POINTS.

>> THAT'S ALSO SOMETHING THAT

EVERYONE DOESN'T DO.

THROWING ALL THESE ASSISTS TO

The Lies We Tell | Lecture 4 | Guilty Party: History of Lying - Duration: 6:20.

- It's a lot easier to say the true portion

of the story, that's the problem.

If you're hiding in plain sight,

people are more likely to believe you.

People want to believe you.

(upbeat music)

The history of lying.

Hello class, welcome to the fourth lecture on how we lie.

First, thank you so much for your field notes

on the Liar's Club's ticks and tells.

You guys have sharp eyes.

You caught some moments of distress that even I missed.

How many of you started wondering

whether others were cataloging your various gestures?

I definitely have.

That's the problem with being aware

of the power of scrutiny.

I mean, the professor and I,

we're not actually behind a one-way mirror,

our scrutiny is reflected back on us tenfold.

Particularly with cuff.

I mean, it's a big claim to make.

And every product that ended up at the Museum of Failure

had backers once in geniuses who pioneered them.

But let's set aside internal anxieties

and sink our teeth into some hearty lies.

We know why we lie.

We've seen what it looks like when we lie.

But how do we lie?

Now, I can imagine most of you said something

along the lines of with our mouths.

Don't try to be funny.

Alright, so maybe it's better to ask

what kind of lies do we tell?

When we swear to tell the truth,

the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,

that is the way that our justice system covers its bases.

See, all lies fall into three categories.

Lies of commission, lies of omission,

and lies of influence.

To tell the truth, that vow is designed

to omit lies of commission.

See, lies of commission are straightforward bald-faced lies.

If you had said I was nowhere near the scene of the crime,

Your Honor, but there was video footage of you

at the scene of the crime, that would be a direct lie.

The whole truth covers lies of omission.

Lies of omission are created when you

leave out certain details in a story that don't benefit you.

If you say that I was at the scene of the crime,

but you leave out the fact that you were murdering someone,

that would be a lie of omission.

And nothing but the truth,

that protects from lies of influence.

Lies of influence are statements meant to influence

our perception of events and change our point of view.

They're particularly dangerous

because they don't seem like lies.

Saying I'm a good person and I volunteer

at the Animal Rescue Society, I can't believe

you accused me of murder is a lie of influence.

You hope to change people's opinions of you

and make them sympathize with you.

You'll find these lies most often in the wild.

Most people aren't 100% comfortable telling a direct lie.

Like we discussed in the last session,

untruths make people uncomfortable.

It's a lot easier to say the true portion of a story.

That's the problem, if you're hiding in plain sight,

people are more likely to believe you,

people want to believe you.

These last two categories in particular

have a lot of subgenres, most of these have to do

with turning the conversation away from the facts

and trying to influence people's opinions of the liar.

So, what are some of the examples

of these kinds of lies in history?

Again, most of history.

But let's grab some specific examples.

Who knows the story of Julius Caesar?

Just to review, Julius Caesar was a very

popular senator in the Republic of Rome.

Too popular, the other senators thought it

was likely he would become king, a tyrant.

So they conspired to kill him.

Worse, they convinced his friend

Brutus that Julius had to die.

So Julius mutters his famous last words, et tu Brute?

Then Brutus makes a huge mistake,

he decides to trust Julius Caesar's son, Mark Antony.

Now, Mark Antony tells the conspirators

that he wants to present Caesar's body

to the citizens of Rome as their friend.

Friends, I am with you all and love you all.

That's a lie of commission,

a bald-faced lie.

Then, Mark Antony appears before the citizens,

he declares I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.

That's a lie of omission.

He will not overtly praise Caesar,

but Mark Antony spends the rest of his speech

listing Caesar's best qualities,

while apparently dismissing them.

Then, Mark Antony uses a lie of influence

to destroy Brutus' reputation.

Brutus continued to refer back

to his honor as his motivation,

killing Caesar wasn't a crime because it was honorable.

Well then Mark Antony says oh masters,

if I were disposed to stir your hearts

and minds to mutiny and rage, I should do Brutus wrong,

who you all know is an honorable man.

So, with that turn of speech, he has influenced the crowd.

They have turned against their conspirators

and the civil war is under way.

(phone ringing)

Oh, damn.

I'm afraid, unfortunately,

that I'm gonna have to cut today's class short.

I have to run and help Moynihan set up for the interview.

For your homework this week, I'd like you to write

a short paragraph or create a video.

(bright music)

Think carefully about your use of lies of influence.

You might be surprised to find out

how often you dodge the truth.

As usual, if you're careful,

I'll make sure to reward you for your efforts.

I'm watching closely.

$400,000 My First Year In Real Estate - Duration: 3:42.

- I spent almost two decades in the entertainment industry

as an editor helping to market a bunch of movies

But I left last year to work full time

as a real estate agent.

Let me tell you about it.

But before I do,

full time in real estate.

I freaking hate making cold calls

and I haven't made one yet.

I take what I learned in Hollywood

or expensive editing software to create amazing content that

gonna to make you a local celebrity, help you stand out.

And yeah, make more money.
