I've been playing a lot of Pokemon let's go Pikachu also I have Pokemon let's go
Eevee but I'll get into that. Anyway Pokemon let's go Pikachu I put in well
over 24 hours and over those hours I've formed some pretty strong opinions and a
ton of thoughts that I would summarize as saying Pokemon let's go Pikachu and
Eevee feel less like a simplification of an existing formula and a lot more like
a new game+ but what does that mean? Well I'll explain starting with the elephant
in the room. The perceived ease or casual nature of these games. I'm someone that
sits firmly in the middle of the hardcore versus casual fan device what I
mean by that is I'm someone who appreciates more of the things that
appeals to the masses while also understanding the nuts and bolts of it
all the nature's abilities EVs IVs VGCs, all those fun initialisms and
as such I think it's fair to say that this game gives me enough of that
balance between those two competing values. Competitive team building the
traditional way is a very tedious grind heavy experience. A lot of people view
this as the challenge of the game I think the biggest reason for this is the
fact that most casual players see the time and let's be real RNG involved and
they run the other way. This makes a lot of those more competitive minded people
feel like the ones resilient enough to stick around in the face of the thing
that repulsed the casuals. Well I'd argue the challenge of fully training a
Pokemon team is completely unchanged it's not something that I would say
requires skill it's not like painting a portrait it's more akin to painting or
a room your house pretty much anyone can do it with a little bit of learning
involved but some people just rather have it taken care of for them and
that's okay. In Pokemon let's go you're given the choice to make the game push
back as much or as little as you see fit in a pretty natural way it does this
because most experience that can be accumulated is done via catching wild
Pokemon and racking up those coinciding multipliers when a catch meets a certain
requirement you also get some experience the traditional way by battling trainers
but this will never be enough to overpower a complete team this makes
grinding something optional it's something you don't have to do to
complete your objectives of beating the elite four or even the relatively
long-term goal of completing the Pokedex but it is something you can do to make
those two things even easier than they were in the past it's a pretty
deliberate handicap not the forced training wheels that many people seem to
think they are or at least thought they were before launch at the current point
in my playthrough my main team is underleveled relative to the next gym
leader on my journey despite going out of my way to battle every trainer and
chain a few wild pokemon here and there outside of the business-as-usual
captures to fill out my pokedex this is because I make it my mission and Pokemon
to do as little grinding as possible I don't think grinding in Pokemon is fun
and I mean that's no secret but even the people that do have the option to rather
than keeping the same team throughout they can grind for the best possible
pokemon team and then train that team as they go through the story nobody will be
overpowered in that scenario your levels will be equalized unless you seek to
stay overleveled after grinding for a specific capture this makes it so that
people that like a grind have something to chase and the people that just want
to go through the game at their natural pace have a path to fulfill those needs
and maintain the little bit of resistance in Pokemon games that has gone virtually
unchanged in the last 20 years and that remains true for another the sky is
falling moment people had about this game gym requirements turns out there
are all things you would have to pretty actively avoid doing even in the case of
the gym that I would say is pretty hand-holdy being Brock's you have to
be barely playing the game at all to not have a water or grass type Pokemon to
show to the judge at the door and every other gym they pretty much bend over
backwards to make these rules inconsequential and honestly loosely
enforced case in point I've been talking about this game with
channel members in our discord which you should join using the link below even if
you aren't or don't wanna become a channel member and when talking to
active community member Grymmhain I discovered that you can present
Charizard as your "cute" Pokemon and Erica's gym this thing is cute and to
make matters worse question mark is the fact that you can just put that Pokemon
in the box once you're in the gym these rules mean nothing moving on let's go
also does everyone a favor by making competitive play outside of the critical
path less of a pain to get started with as any hardcore Pokemon fan would have
told you before trying the write off Pokemon let's go based off its opening
hours the challenge is in the postgame competitive team building and maximizing
the potential of your team is a major part of that postgame for let's go in
particular getting Pokemon with the best possible stats is a lot less dependent
on RNG and is by virtue of this less time-consuming not only during the act
of actually catching those Pokemon but also when checking to see whether or
not you got the stats you want for a given capture or set of captures thanks
to the individual values judge that is present in the gen 7 games being
acquirable for use in your Pokemon box but in this game your Pokemon box is in
your back meaning you don't even need to run back and forth to the Pokemon Center
to access this information outside of this unlike past games you're guaranteed
to be rewarded when dumping your perfect IV hunting leftovers by sending them off
to the professor instead of the shot in the dark that is Wonder trade which
isn't necessarily bad just mostly unreliable or the darkest timeline
straight up releasing them which gives you nothing but less clutter in your box
although in fairness Pokemon let's go does suffer in the navigation department
when it comes to the UI in the box since you have one giant box rather than
multiple mini ones that you can cycle through but that's not the only quality
of life improvement in relation to competitive team building there's also
an NPC that makes assigning natures a determining factor for your Pokemon's
potential less random by affording you the ability to pay money that you earn
in-game to guarantee that all Pokemon you encounter for a set amount of time
will be the nature that you want previously the way to manipulate
a pokémon's nature without RNG being required was breeding and hatching an
egg the final aspect of competitive pokémon battling that I'm going to talk
about in this video is seamlessly incorporated into the last two things
that I talked about and that's EV training in this game you're giving
candies that improve a specific pokemons stats when catching other Pokemon
previously to EV train you would need to battle the same Pokemon that just
give you these stat boosts that are spread out across many many battles that
process is a lot more cumbersome especially when trying to be both quick
about it and precise sure you could do horde battles to lessen the time use
items that yield higher v's per battle or super training but none of those
things give you the ability to boost your stats in such a targeted way this
easily and quickly by doing these things pokemon lets go in all honesty serves
two masters and makes competitive battling approachable for those just
getting started as expected but it also does the hardcore competitive players a
solid by making their lives easier in other words PokeGenning just got a
whole lot less appealing for a good amount of people of course again this
game isn't perfect no hold items and no abilities isn't a quality of life
improvement that much I'll admit but in fairness limiting the rules for a
different competitive experience is nothing new there's always been a
gen 1 meta this is just a gen 1 meta without bugged out parts of the battle
system i am completely fine with this blast of the past for battling if
anything all this does is salvage general in which leads me to
transitioning from battle specific changes to well everything else honestly
my favorite part of pokemon but in an effort to provide context on why that is
i need to talk about my time with another pokemon game pokemon yellow
pokemon yellow was a game that was pretty important to my video game
specific upbringing it was my first video game and no I
don't mean the first game I've ever played or even the first game that I've
had access to but as a kid with a good amount of siblings two brothers and two
sisters it was the first game that belonged just me
and it was the first game that was bought just because I wanted it not
because my parents heard it was good or saw it on the news or any of my other
siblings wanting it was all mine I feel it's important to bring that up for the
sake of transparency as a lifelong Pokemon fan that has been with the
series even before yellow's release and hasn't stopped playing since I am
predisposed to like a game like this however I'm also blatantly honest and I
do my damnedest to avoid allowing the games
I love define what games I view to be critically sound after playing through
pokemon yellow the week before lets goes release I can say I don't think pokemon
yellow holds up under a critical scope and honestly I haven't thought so for
some time now that generation hasn't aged well and a quick google search of
gen 1 pokemon glitches or bugs will give you an idea as to why those
games weren't perfect even then but they didn't need to be they needed to give
people just enough to appreciate the game for the proposition being pitched I
say all that to say that pokemon yellow didn't make me fall in love with the
mechanics of Pokemon it just showed potential in the world it built and
drove me to fall in love with that universe I also say all of that to say I
do think Pokemon let's go is at least good critically and it scratches that
personal love itch pretty well - Pokemon let's go benefits from the care it
takes to make the Pokemon universe feel that much more realized the idea of this
world that's filled to the brim with these fantastical creatures with crazy
abilities was just a suggestion in the past this game takes an important step
toward making that concept more than just a concept there's no suspension of
disbelief needed from a growlithe literally charging at you or an Onix
surprising you from underground in a cave there was a crazy amount of
suspension of disbelief when running into human size butterflies without any
other indication that they're there other than of course the "tall" grass and
to be fair at the time of Gen 1 it worked perfectly after all there wasn't
much more that they could do especially on the Gameboy pokemon yellow
couldn't even have ran on nes if it had to render
overworld full of Pokemon a Pokemon on your shoulder and a Pokemon trailing
behind or better yet giving you a ride Gameboy
definitely wouldn't be able to 3ds could barely run the fill-in-the-blank style
pokemon games that we've had in the past but switch Switch has what it takes to
make this world to feel real in that way is this even a perfect execution of that
no there's weird unexplained ways that certain pokemon appear some makes sense
like that Onix I mentioned but others just appear out of thin air however it's
a step in the right direction beyond that Kanto region Pokemon aren't
weirdly or arbitrarily limited to being gifted to you in this game you know
those Pokemon that as far as what we know according to what's evident in the
game are endangered species but they can somehow give to every trainer that
starts their journey in this game that's no longer the case
you can find every starter out in the wild and naturally at that they're rare
spawns to be sure but that makes a lot more sense than not being able to catch
them at all catching Pokemon isn't just changed by the way you'll encounter them
of course the Pokemon go mechanics are another divisive shake-up new to the
Pokemon RPGs and it's another thing that I believe the community was wrong about
these mechanics bit naturally in the Pokemon experience my only gripe is that
I wish berries could be substituted with the ability to weaken a Pokemon through
battle to catch it for the next game they should 100% keep the Pokemon go
circle mechanic but allow you to lower it from red to green through battling
instead of exclusively through berries in the pokeball you use another aspect
of Pokemon go I hope that grandfather in is the use of the pokeball plus again
this isn't perfect but the novelty of it is great and I would love for it to
exist in future Pokemon games on that note there are more things that this
game does to make the world feel alive some things I think they nailed the
landing for other things I think they did good enough at but I hope that they
return to in future iterations of the mainline Pokemon games the most obvious
of which being the ability to take your Pokemon out of their pokéballs and have
them travel with you in the overworld this
will increase your bond with your Pokemon and in some cases also allow you
to get around faster by riding them or just be badass ridiculous or downright
charming you can interact with these Pokemon in a limited fashion by pressing
the action button which lets you keep tabs on how your Pokemon is feeling at
that moment your Pokemon also tip you off to hidden items in the overworld
Pikachu in particular and I'd assume Eevee if you make poor decisions are
living dowsing machines that help you track down those items more consistently
your partner Pokemon also get the bulk of your love through partner play then
the Nintendogs-like feature that allows you to interact with your partner in the
future I would love to see both of these features expanded so you can take out
multiple Pokemon and interact with them in the same way you can interact with
your partner in this game I want to be able to set up camp for the night and
let my Pokemon all out to enjoy the view I think it's easy to see I like Pokemon
let's go a lot I originally anticipated to appreciate it just as a quick hit of
Pokemon dopamine to hold me over until 2019 comes out but it ended up being
more than that it ended up being a Pokemon game with ideas that I hope to
see return in the future but those are my thoughts what do you think about
Pokemon let's go and thanks for watching you know what as a reward for watching
I'd like to announce that I am currently doing a giveaway for Pokemon let's go
Eevee details in the description if you enjoyed the video I'd much appreciate it
if you subscribed and ring the bell for more videos like this every Tuesday and
Thursday at 4 p.m. Eastern Time if you shared it with a friend the friend who
also was playing through Pokemon let's go or maybe they're a little
trepidatious for the comment challenge for those of you who are playing Pokemon
let's go which version did you pick and how far are you into the game I want to
know play time and all of that and you might have noticed I didn't really touch
on the pokeball plus that much that's because my friend Bob did a video over
on the Wulff Den I'll link that on the card up up here I'll link it there go
watch his video okay that's it for me see you next week
