How to Install a Stair Railing - Duration: 3:51.

Building codes require all staircases to have a handrail.

Installing a railing is a quick, straightforward job, but to ensure safety, it has to be done

correctly.

This project walks you through how to properly mount a railing into wall studs at the right

height and angle.

Here's what you'll need for this intermediate-level project:

When taking on this DIY task be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.

Throughout the video, we'll alert you regarding when you should and should not use the safety

gear.

STEP 1 Measure for rail length Measure from the nosing of the lowest step

to the nosing of the upper step.

If you plan on making handrail returns, purchase a railing at least one foot longer than your

measurement.

STEP 2 Determine diagonal rail thickness and length

Before installing brackets, consult local building codes to determine how high your

railing should be.

To determine the diagonal thickness of the railing, lay it along the stair nosings with

about four inches of overhang beyond the bottom step.

Place a quick square on the bottom step and measure straight up from the edge of the bottom

stair nosing to the top of the rail.

STEP 3 Measure bracket Place a stair bracket along the inside corner

of a framing square and note the distance from the top of the bracket to the bottom

screw hole.

STEP 4 Mark rail height on wall To determine the rail height, add the screw

hole distance to the diagonal rail thickness, then subtract the total from the height you've

chosen for the top of the rail.

Mark this length on the side of a four-foot level.

Place the level on the bottom tread with the marked side flush along the nosing.

Confirm the level is plumb and mark the wall according to the mark on your level.

Repeat this process at the landing nosing.

STEP 5 Snap a line Have a helper hold a chalkline at one mark

while you hold it at the other and snap a line.

STEP 6 Locate Brackets Stair brackets should be spaced no more than

four feet apart.

Three brackets should do the job for most home stair runs.

You'll install one bracket into the stud closest to the bottom of the rail, one into

the stud closest to the top, and a third into the stud closest to the middle of the rail.

Slide an electronic stud finder along the chalk line and mark the center of the three

studs for your brackets.

STEP 7 Install brackets Predrill holes where the center of the three

studs crosses the chalk line.

Attach each bracket with one of the supplied screws through the bracket's bottom hole

into the pre-drilled hole.

Predrill through each bracket hole and insert screws.

STEP 8 Install railing Put the rail in place on the bracket, with

the longest part of the railing at the bottom of the stairway.

Put the supplied strap over the bracket and mark both holes with a pencil.

Remove the rail and predrill the two holes.

Replace the rail and fasten it to the bracket.

Put each remaining strap in place, predrill your holes, and install screws.

Your installation is complete!

How to Install Wainscoting - Duration: 6:06.

Wainscoting is a classic way to add elegance to any room.

In this project—which should take you about two hours for every fourteen feet of wall—we'll

show you how to build and install wainscoting capped with a chair rail and a decorative

profile on the inside edges.

Here's what you'll need for this intermediate-level project:

When taking on this DIY task be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.

Throughout the video, we'll alert you regarding when you should and should not use the safety

gear.

Step 1: Make a layout There's no standard height for wainscoting

so do what's best for the room where you'll be installing it.

Chair rails are typically placed about three feet from the floor.

Our chair rail is two and three-fourths inches wide, so the top of our frames will be at

the thirty-three and one-fourth-inch mark.

Stile spacing of about twenty-four inches works well with the height we chose, but be

sure to measure and space them evenly for your specific wall and room layout.

One stile will overlap the other at inside corners, making one wall three-fourths of

an inch shorter than the other.

If you have any outside corners, the stiles will meet at a miter, which will make both

walls three-fourths of an inch longer.

Step 2: Rip inside-corner stiles All of the rails and most of the stiles will

be made of standard-width pine.

However, one of the boards at each overlapping inside corner will need to be trimmed down

to four and one-fourth inches wide so both corner stiles will reveal the same width.

Set a table saw blade or rip fence on a circular saw to four and a quarter inches, ripping

enough one-by-six stock for the corner stiles.

If you have outside corners, set your table saw blade to forty-five degrees, setting the

fence to cut the angle without reducing the overall width of the stiles.

Once you've set your fence, miter two for each outside corner.

Step 3: Cut Stiles All the stiles in our design will be twenty-two

inches long.

And all but the corner stiles will be cut from one-by-fours.

Cut as many stiles as you need to length with a miter saw.

For the corner stiles, use the pieces you ripped in the last step.

Step 4: Find studs Use an electronic stud finder to locate and

mark the center of each stud about six inches above the floor.

This will help you easily locate the studs when you nail the bottom rail in place.

Step 5: Install Bottom rails Measure and cut each bottom rail to fit.

Place it in place, propping up with shims if needed.

Use a level to make sure the rails are perfectly straight.

Any slight gaps will be covered by shoe molding.

If you need to use more than one piece of bottom rail to span a wall, cut a forty-five-degree

bevel on the first piece, planning the cut to fall over a stud.

Nail the first piece in place.

A sixteen-gauge power finish nailer will make the job easier, but you can also use a hammer

with eight-D finish nails.

Put the second piece in place and mark where it overlaps, then cut with the opposing bevel

angle or miter.

Apply wood glue on the joint and nail the second piece in place.

You can putty and sand any gaps or nail holes as you go or wait until the end and do it

all at once.

Step 6: Install top rail Measure and cut top rails to fit as you did

with the bottom rails, using overlapping miter joints if you need more than one piece on

a wall.

Measure and mark twenty-two inches up from the bottom rail at each corner.

Snap a chalk line, then, using a level, transfer the stud locations from the bottom rail, and

nail the top rail in place with your nailer.

Step 7: Install stiles Apply a thin, even coat of construction adhesive

to attach the stiles, using a square to ensure each is perpendicular to the bottom rail.

Remember to use four-and-a-half-inch-wide stiles on both ends of the first wall.

For outside corners, use the pieces you cut with a forty-five-degree angle in step two.

Test fit, make any necessary adjustments, then apply adhesive to the stiles and set

in place.

If you'd like, begin filling nail holes with wood putty.

Once dry, sand with a sanding block.

Step 8: Install inner molding Measure and cut your hardwood base shoe molding

at forty-five degree angles.

Test the fit, then use your nailer to secure it in place.

You can putty nail holes and sand as you go or wait until all your molding is installed.

Step 9: Install shoe molding Measure and cut pieces of shoe molding to

fit between your walls, mitering the ends at forty-five degrees.

When making your cuts, make sure the side that will rest alongside the bottom rail is

against the saw fence.

Use a nailer to secure the shoe molding in place.

Step 10: Install Chair Rail Use a sixteen-gauge nailer to install your

chair rail.

Step 11: Finishing Touches Apply wood putty in any remaining nail holes

and seams.

Let the putty dry per manufacturer's instructions, then sand until smooth.

Prime and paint as needed, using painter's tape along edges as needed.

For a sleek finish, caulk along the top of the chair rail once your paint is dry.

Your installation is complete!

Step back and admire your new wainscoting.

How to Pressure Wash Siding - Duration: 3:06.

Pressure washing your siding is a quick way to boost your home's curb appeal.

It also saves money by prolonging the life of your siding.

This project should only take about three hours for an average-size home.

If you already have a pressure washer and some basic safety gear, the only thing you'll

need to purchase is siding detergent.

Here's everything you'll need for this easy project:

When taking on this DIY task be sure to equip yourself with the proper safety gear.

gear.

Step 1: Prepare house Before you begin, wet all plants near where

you'll be working.

This will prevent detergent from sticking to them.

Step 2: Prepare washer Pressure washers come with different nozzles

for different jobs.

You'll start this project with a low-pressure nozzle for applying detergent.

Be sure to use a detergent designed for siding.

Some washers have a hose you place into a container of detergent.

Others have a reservoir you fill with detergent.

Step 3: Apply detergent Starting at the bottom of your siding, move

the wand back and forth in long, even strokes about twelve inches away from the surface.

If possible, work in identifiable sections—from a corner to the side of a window or door,

for example.

Let the detergent soak for about ten minutes before rinsing.

If a section starts to dry before you're ready to rinse, spray it with detergent again

to keep it wet.

Step 4: Rinse vinyl Most pressure washers come with a forty-degree

and a twenty-five-degree nozzle.

Forty-degree nozzles have a wider spray pattern and produce less pressure.

Rinse vinyl siding and most wood siding with a twenty-five-degree nozzle.

If you'll be rinsing softer woods, like cedar or redwood, switch to a forty-degree

nozzle and stand back several feet to reduce pressure.

Step 5: Pre-soak brick Since brick is very porous, you'll need

to soak it thoroughly with a hose before spraying it with detergent.

After soaking, apply detergent from the bottom up just as you did for the vinyl.

Step 6: Rinse brick Rinse all brick carefully, as some is softer

than others.

Use a twenty-five-degree nozzle to reach second-story brick, but watch carefully to make sure it's

not crumbling.

When you feel confident your brick is sturdy enough for a forty-degree nozzle, switch them

out.

Start rinsing from several feet away and slowly get closer, watching carefully for signs of

crumbling.

Farmhouse-style window trim is a quick way to give any room a clean, finished look.

You don't need to be a carpenter to install this classic trim.

You can do it yourself in just thirty minutes to an hour.

Here's what you'll need for this inexpensive, intermediate-level project:

STEP 1: Measure and Cut Stool Measure your window frame and draw a sketch

with the measurements to determine how much overhang and what kind of reveal you'd like

for your stool.

Make sure to leave enough room for your reveal beyond the vertical framing pieces.

Cut your one-by-four to length.

Measure the depth from the window pane to the front of the window frame along the bottom

edge, marking the measurement on each end of your stool molding.

Cut the corners of your molding with your jigsaw so it will sit flush on the stool with

your preferred overhang on both sides of the window frame.

STEP 2: Install Stool Molding Place your stool molding on the bottom of

the window frame—flush against both the window and the wall where there's overhang.

Fasten the stool molding with a sixteen-gauge finish nailer.

STEP 3: Install Side Casings Measure up from the stool to determine the

length of your side casing.

Mark your reveal—in this case three-sixteenths of an inch—at the bottom and top.

Cut two one-by-fours to length with a miter saw.

Align the side pieces with the marks on your stool molding, and fasten each to the framing

with a nailer.

STEP 4: Build Top Casing After cutting your wood to size, clamp a piece

of one-by-two to the top and bottom of a one-by-four, making sure the overhang is equal on both

sides.

Fasten the pieces together with your nailer, being careful to nail straight into the wood.

Once secure, clamp a one-by-three to the top of your build and secure it with your nailer.

STEP 5: Install Top Casing Set the top casing assembly in place, checking

for the proper reveal on each side.

Nail the top casing assembly to the jamb with nails spaced about every six inches.

STEP 6: Install Bottom Casing The bottom casing, also known as the apron,

sits just under the stool.

Cut a piece of one-by-four so the ends line up with the edges of the casings above.

Mark the bottom of the stool molding to indicate the reveal and fasten to the frame.

STEP 7: Finishing Fill your holes and seams with wood putty

and let dry, then sand and paint to your liking.

Your build is complete!

Step back and admire your new farmhouse window trim!
