Chinese President Xi Jinping has reportedly proposed to U.S. President Donald Trump that

the armistice that ended hostilities in the Korean War... be turned into a peace treaty...

signed by the two Koreas, China and the U.S. Japan-based Kyodo News reported Sunday, citing

multiple U.S. and Chinese diplomatic sources,... that President Xi had made the proposal in

a phone conversation with President Trump on March 9th.

That's a couple of weeks before North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited President Xi in

China.

The Kyodo report highlighted that Japan and Russia, though members of the long-stalled

six-party denuclearization talks,... were excluded from President Xi's proposal as a

way to seize the initiative on the North Korea issue.

It said President Trump did not reply definitively to the suggestion but did ask China to keep

up its pressure on the North.

S. Korean artists to perform in Pyongyang for first time in 13 years - Duration: 0:59.

A group of South Korean musicians will be giving a rare performance in North Korea this

evening -- the first of its kind in 13 years.

The start time has been changed several times at the North's request so that more people

can attend -- postponed originally by two hours, but now by just one.

Now it's scheduled to begin at 6 pm, North Korea time -- that's 6:30, Seoul time.

The concert comes ahead of the inter-Korean summit talks set to take place on April 27th.

It's also reciprocating performances by artists from North Korea who came to the South in

February ahead of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The two-hour show, called "Spring is Coming,"... will include performances by South Korean

artists Cho Yong-pil , girl group Red Velvet and Seohyun .

They'll be making a second appearance on Tuesday.

A South Korean Taekwondo team also performed this afternoon.

Their second show, on Monday, will include performers from the North.

S. Korea, U.S. begin annual military drill postponed for Winter Olympics - Duration: 0:52.

South Korea and the United States resume one of their joint annual military exercises Foal

Eagle as planned.

It was postponed for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in South Korea this year; it normally

starts in late February or early March.

It's also shorter this time.

The drill will take four weeks instead of the usual two months, wrapping up by the time

South Korean President Moon Jae-in heads for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The South Korean military has said that the size of the drills will be similar to previous

years,... but it's reported that they'll be less "intense" -- that is, fewer U.S. strategic

assets will be involved to emphasize the exercise's defensive nature.

Around 11-thousand-500 U.S. personnel are taking part alongside some 300-thousand South

Koreans.

Three S. Korean sailors presumed to have been kidnapped in waters off Ghana - Duration: 1:09.

Three South Korean sailors on a fishing boat are presumed to have been kidnapped by pirates

in waters off the coast of Ghana.

Seoul's foreign ministry says a fishing boat called the Marine 7-1-1 with more than 40

crew members on board -- was believed to have been hijacked by pirates last Monday.

While moving into Nigerian waters, the pirates moved some of the sailors,... including the

three South Koreans,... to a speed boat -- but their whereabouts are unknown.

A local company that brokered the South Koreans to the 7-1-1 said the pirates have not yet

made any contact demanding a ransom in return for the release of the abducted -- adding

that they were keeping a close eye on any developments.

Meanwhile, the remaining 40 or so Ghanaian sailors on the hijacked boat have been released.

The Korean government says it's closely cooperating with nearby countries to find the victims

and get them home safely.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said a South Korean warship which has been operating

in waters off Oman's Port of Salalah, is scheduled to arrive in the nearby sea on April 16th.

Korean researchers mass produce swine flu vaccine using tobacco leaves - Duration: 1:43.

Korean researchers have found a new way to mass produce vaccines for pigs... against

foot and mouth disease.

And they used an unusual ingredient -- tobacco leaves.

It's cost effective, and hopefully can help Korea stay free of FMD.

Park Se-young has more.

This factory is filled with tobacco plants.

Using the leaves of these plants, Korean researchers have developed a technology to mass produce

a swine flu vaccine.

After inserting swine flu antibodies into tobacco seeds, the researchers grew the plants

and extracted the antibodies from their leaves.

When infected pigs were injected with the vaccine, their temperatures dropped immediately.

At one-third the price of existing cell-based vaccines, the plant-based vaccine is safe

and can be used for pork exports.

"It's much safer compared to live vaccines and can be used more easily on site.

Its marker function helps us achieve FMD-free status."

Tobacco leaves can be harvested monthly since plant factories are unaffected by seasons

or external conditions.

The vaccine provides a healthy way to utilize the tobacco plant.

"Instead of consuming tobacco the usual way, we can introduce techniques like protein extraction

and vaccine production to create added values."

The manufacturing technique for plant-derived vaccines could be applied to the production

of other medicines or for cosmetics.

S. Korea's exports rise for 17th straight month in March - Duration: 1:42.

Despite signs of protectionism in key markets,... Korea's outbound shipments maintained their

upward momentum last month -- thanks to strong shipments in the chip sector.

However, prospects aren't so bright for the months to come.

Kim Min-ji reports.

Korea's exports stayed on an upward trajectory last month.

The trade ministry says... outbound shipments rose over six percent on-year in March to

51-point-5 billion U.S. dollars.

They've been rising for 17 months straight,... and, for the first time in the month of March,

they topped the 50 billion dollar mark.

The rise was attributed to a recovery in global trade as well as a boom in the IT sector.

Outbound shipments of personal computers jumped 62 percent,... while that of semiconductors

rose over 44 percent.

Chips alone posted a record export value of over 10 billion dollars last month.

Imports also continued to rise -- up five percent on year to 44-point-7 billion dollars.

With that, the trade surplus came to 6-point-8 billion -- extending the surplus streak for

a 74th straight month.

While the trade ministry said global trade overall will likely continue to rise in the

months to come,... it also noted several downsides that could weigh on Korea's exports -- including

an expansion of import regulations overseas,... the ongoing trade dispute with the U.S.,...

as well as possible market volatility and exchange rate fluctuations from the U.S. interest

rate hike.

The trade ministry said it will keep close tabs on the situation... while continuing

to foster new export markets so that the country's shipments do not lose steam.
