Photoshop Tutorial: How to Create Dramatic, Gold-leaf text on Leather - Duration: 10:33.

Hi. This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV.

I'm going to show you how to create dramatically-lit, gold-leaf text on a leather-bound book cover.

This is an update of a tutorial I did many years ago on an earlier version of Photoshop.

This update is more streamlined and gives you more control with results that are more refined.

I provide this leather texture that you can download, so you can follow along.

Its link is located in my video's description or project files below.

The first step is create a displacement map of the leather texture that will use to wrap

our text around.

This will give our text subtle irregularities that conform to the surface of the leather.

We'll desaturate the color by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + U.

Next, we'll exaggerate its contrast by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + L to open the Levels window.

In the Input white field, type in 129 and click OK or press Enter or Return.

Since displacement maps look better when they're slightly blurred, go to Filter, Blur and Gaussian Blur.

Blur it 1.5 pixels.

Save the image by going to File and "Save As".

Save it to your desktop and name it, "Displacement Map".

Save it as a Photoshop PSD file, save "As a Copy" and click "Save".

In your History panel, click, "Leather texture" to open the image.

If you don't see the History panel, go to Window and History.

Click the New Layer icon to make a new layer.

If your foreground and background colors aren't black and white respectively, press "D" on your keyboard.

Click the background color to open the Color Picker.

In the hexadecimal field, type in: 87681E.

Now, the background color is the color we just typed in.

Go to Filter, Render and Clouds.

Go to Image, Adjustments and "Brightness/Contrast".

Make the Brightness: 40 and the Contrast: 30.

Go to Filter and Filter Gallery.

Open the "Distort" folder and click "Glass".

Make the Distortion: 18, the Smoothness: 4, the Texture: Frosted and the Scaling: 200.

Next, we'll add the title of your book.

Open your "Horizontal Type Tool" and pick a font.

I'm using "Times New Roman Regular".

If you don't already have it, I provided its link, as well.

I'll start with a point size of 118, Sharp and Center Alignment.

Click the color box and pick white.

Click on your document and type out your text.

If you want to increase the size of a character, highlight it and type in a higher point size.

To make another character the same size, just highlight it.

To adjust the "kerning", which is the space between two characters, which is called "kerning",

click between those characters and press Alt or Option + the right or left arrow on your keyboard.

To reposition your text, open your Move Tool and move it.

If you want to add more text below it, open your Type Tool again and click on your document.

Adjust its point size and type out your text.

If you'd like to make the bottom line bigger, highlight it and type in a higher point size.

To close the space between the two lines of text, click the "Character/Paragraph" icon

or go to Window and Character.

In the "Character" panel, go to the "Baseline Shift" icon and drag your cursor to the right

to raise up the bottom line.

I'd like to italicize the bottom two lines.

To do this, I'll double-click the large "T" of the layer to highlight both lines and click

the "Faux Italic" icon.

To slide your new lines of text up, open your Move Tool and press and hold the Up arrow on your keyboard.

We'll make all of our text into one Smart Object by Shift-clicking your other text layer

to make it active, as well, and click "Convert to Smart Object".

We can close the Character panel now.

To center the text on your document, press Ctrl or Cmd + A to select the canvas and click

the "Align Horizontal Centers" icon and the "Align Vertical Centers" icon.

To deselect it, press Ctrl or Cmd + D. Because we're going to ultimately place our image

in perspective, it'll better if we lower out text on the document quite a bit.

You'll see why later when we're at that point.

To lower your text, just press the Down arrow on your keyboard.

Go to Filter, Distort and Displace.

Displace the Horizontal and Vertical Scales: 2, Stretch to Fit and Repeat Edge Pixels.

Find and click the "Displacement Map" file that you saved at the beginning and click Open.

The Displacement Map made the edges of our text conform to the contours of leather texture.

Change the Blend Mode to "Overlay".

Ctrl-click or Cmd-click the thumbnail of the text to make a selection of it.

We'll convert the two top layers into one Smart Object.

Click the Layer Mask icon to make a layer mask of the selection next to the Smart Object.

Next, we'll angle our image's perspective, but first, convert both layers into a Smart

object, so we can adjust the perspective of both layers at the same time, as well as,

apply a lighting effect to the overall image later.

Open your Transform Tool by pressing Ctrl or Cmd +T. Go to Edit, Transform and Perspective.

Go to a bottom corner and drag it out approximately this much.

Then, press Enter or Return.

By lowering our text earlier, it's now optically balanced on our document.

Lastly, we'll add a dramatic lighting effect.

Go to Filter, Render and Lighting Effects.

The Lighting Effects filter works only if you have a supported video card and only on

8-bit RGB images in Photoshop CC.

To check your Image Mode, go to Image and Mode.

Make sure it's RGB color/8 bits/Channel.

Once you open the Lighting Effects filter, if you don't see the bounding shapes, press

Ctrl or Cmd + H. Zoom out by pressing Ctrl or Cmd and the minus key on your keyboard

until you see most of the bounding shapes.

In the Properties panel, choose, "Spot".

The color is white, the Intensity is 75, the Hotspot is 77, the Exposure is minus 54 and

the Gloss is minus 8.

Metallic is 100 and the Ambiance is 44.

The Texture is None.

Drag inside the lighting effect to position it over your image.

To rotate it, go outside and rotate it.

Continue this until you like it's angle and position.

Then, click OK at the top.

To fit it onto your canvas, press Ctrl or Cmd + 0.

This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV.

Thanks for watching!

Social Security Disability Benefits - Duration: 7:36.

Welcome to North Carolina Law TV.

Today we're going to talk about social security disability.

What is it and who is eligible?

My guest is David Daggett, managing partner of Daggett Shuler Law and he's going to help

us with this important topic.

David, thanks for being here today.

Thanks for having me, Cindy.

David, what is social security disability?

I know some people think of it as a government handout.

Yeah, that's a common misconception.

Social security is not a government handout.

Social security is an insurance program, a disability insurance program, run by the federal

government.

When you get your paycheck, over on the side you see the various deductions.

The FICA deduction, that's a social security tax, so it's just like paying an insurance

premium for disability and that's an important thing.

Both because there's a perception in society that people on social security are getting

welfare.

It's not welfare.

There's also the apprehension of somebody who's disabled, because they don't want to

be taking advantage of the system.

Most people are good, hard working people.

They don't want to take advantage of the system, well, you've paid into that.

You've paid your insurance premiums.

It's just like if you have a life insurance policy and somebody dies, you present that

to the life insurance company and you hope they're going to pay.

I mean, they should.

Yeah, absolutely.

This is a disability insurance policy, but it's through the federal government, so if

you meet the criteria of being disabled, which means you can't earn an income, you can't

provide for your family, you owe it to yourself and your family to apply for social security

disability benefits that you've been paying into all of these years.

I'm glad you cleared that up.

Now who is eligible for social security disability?

What you have to show generally ... In the law, the law's this big, so there's all sorts

of rules and exceptions and that sort of thing, but generally, you have to be disabled from

any gainful employment for a period of 12 months or longer or substantially document

that you're going to be disabled for 12 months or longer.

You have to be under 65 years old, because there's a conversion to social security retirement

at that age, but anybody disabled from gainful employment who has an employment history and

paid into the system, they're entitled to social security disability.

Now, distinguish that with SSI claims, supplemental income claims, that is a poor person.

That's a welfare program.

That's much different than social security disability.

Okay.

That's a disability program for poor people who have not paid into the system, but social

security disability is an insurance policy that you've paid into, I've paid into, all

the camera guys have paid into, they've paid disability premiums into the system.

Okay, now how often are people denied?

Are they denied?

Oh, yeah.

Initial application, the latest statistics in North Carolina in the denials are going

up was over 72% of the time.

Wow.

Yeah.

It's a very, very difficult system and you're going to get me on my high horse here in a

second, but what's happened is our politics are a little out of control right now.

That's for sure.

The politicians like to kick in areas where you can't fight back.

There's a lot of politicians kicking the social security system.

They're presenting it in a way that people are going handouts and it's made it much more

difficult for people who are truly disabled to get those benefits that they really deserve

and, doggone it, it's not fair.

No, it's not fair.

It's not fair.

It's not fair at all.

We see politicians on TV pointing fingers at these people that they're taking welfare

and they're taking handouts.

No, they're not.

These are good, decent, hard working people who've paid into the system for years and

they're entitled to disability benefits if they're disabled.

Absolutely.

I completely agree with that.

Okay, so David, does it help to hire a lawyer, and if so, what are the difference in percentages

when you hire a lawyer?

Absolutely.

The good thing about social security disability is it's on a contingency fee basis, which

means you don't pay the lawyer unless you win.

Remember, 72% plus of the people have already been denied.

You only pay the lawyer if you win and the fees are capped.

It's right at $6,000 or slightly lower than that, so no matter how much your back disability

is, there's a cap on the fees.

Hiring a lawyer in a social security case is really a good deal and an experienced lawyer

can really, really help.

Helping you with the application process to make it more likely that you actually win.

If you do that, you get paid quickly, the fee may be very low or almost nothing at that

point, because you only paid out of the back benefits and if there's not a whole lot of

back benefits, there's not a whole lot of attorney's fee.

That's a little inside secret- Yeah, right.

... but if you get a lawyer to help you right away, it doesn't cost very much and it might

get your benefits started a whole lot faster all the way through the hearing state.

Now, the thing I tell people is the same politicians that have pointed the finger at disability

people, they've also tightened up the disability hearings system, so the hearing, which is

actually a trial, it's like a trial, in a social security case, it takes a long time

to get there.

It's a very bureaucratic system.

I know it's frustrating for disabled people.

It's frustrating for us, too.

However, competent legal help can usher you through that better than you can do it on

your own and a much higher probability of winning at the end.

Yeah, well how long does this process typically take?

It's not unusual for it to take 18 months or longer.

Okay.

That's really a shame considering that people really need this.

It's a benefit, it's something they paid into all their life and now they have to wait 18

months.

The worst question I get ... I hope I don't cry here on camera ... The worst question

I get is from a nice, hard working person who's got a family and they say, "Well, what

do I do?"

Right.

There's not a good answer.

Family, friends, church, community organizations, do the best you can.

We'll try to get this ushered through, but it's a difficult time for people.

Yeah.

David, thank you for your time today.

How can they reach you if they have questions?

Home Remedies for Cold Sores ❤ Cold Sores on Lips Treatment - Duration: 2:58.

Home Remedies for Cold Sores

Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, usually appear around the lips, nose and chin.

The condition is quite common as well as contagious.

The problem is caused by the herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and is highly contagious,

especially when the blisters are oozing fluid.

However, the virus does not always cause sores and may even stay dormant permanently.

Here are the top 5 home remedies for cold sores.

1.

Ice

Ice helps reduce the swelling, redness, and pain caused by a cold sore.

Wrap an ice cube in a clean washcloth.

Place it over your cold sore for 10 to 15 minutes.

Repeat this every three to four hours.

2.

Garlic

Garlic has enzymes that work as antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents that help

treat cold sores.

In addition, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and reduces swelling and inflammation.

Cut a garlic clove into halves.

Crush one-half and apply it on the affected area.

Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes.

Repeat the process three to five times a day.

Warning: You may feel a burning sensation when applying raw garlic on the blister-like

lesions.

3.

Acetone Nail Polish Remover

Believe it or not, many people have actually tried this remedy and even found it effective.

Acetone is believed to help dry out a cold sore.

Dip a cotton ball in acetone nail polish remover.

Dab it on the cold sore.

Do this several times a day, preferably once an hour.

4.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is great for disinfecting and drying up the sore.

Dip a cotton ball or cotton swab in 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.

Apply it on your cold sore and leave it on for a few minutes.

Do this every few hours.

5.

Licorice Root

This herb prevents and treats cold sores.

It has an active ingredient called glycyrrhizin with antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Mix one tablespoon of licorice root powder and one-half teaspoon of water.

Apply it on your cold sore using a cotton swab or your fingertip (make sure your hands

are clean), and leave it on for a few hours.

Do this several times a day.

You can also have licorice root tea or supplements.

If you are prone to cold sores, eat this herb on a regular basis to help minimize outbreaks.

If you have high blood pressure, avoid taking licorice root as it raises blood pressure

and leads to low levels of potassium.

Tractor Trailer Accidents in North Carolina - Duration: 3:59.

Welcome to North Carolina Law TV.

Today, we're going to talk about tractor trailer accidents which are almost always very serious

and legally very complex.

My guest is David Daggett, an attorney with Daggett Shuler Law and he's going to talk

with us about this topic.

David, good to see you.

Thanks for having me, Cindy.

Well David, tell us how tractor trailer accidents are different than car accidents.

Well, there's a number of big differences.

First of all, tractor trailers can be 80,000 pounds or more so it's different than just

a car hitting a car.

When a tractor trailer is involved in an accident, many times the effects are absolutely devastating

just because of the sheer size of the vehicle.

The damages are severe.

We are talking with some people earlier today and it's amazing how many people had been

fortunate enough to have minor tractor trailer accidents.

But if they hit you, they cross the interstate, run a stoplight, run the intersection, the

effects can be devastating.

In fact, there's an awful lot of deaths that occur on our highways every single day, every

single year from tractor trailer accidents.

Yeah.

Now what makes them more complex legally?

Well, what makes them more complex is you're dealing with state law and you're also dealing

with federal law many times in tractor trailer cases.

Tractor trailer is a big of a misnomer.

I like to say big truck cases.

Any case involving a big truck, the impact is going to be much worse and you have potentially

much more complicated laws because you're dealing with federal laws such as the Federal

Motor Carrier Safety Act, which is a book of laws just for tractor trailers, as well

as the laws of the state where the accident occurs.

So this is not something you want to try and handle yourself.

Oh, no.

No.

A serious injury involving a tractor trailer, an individual does not want to handle them

on their own.

Or trust the insurance company.

Or trust the insurance.

Very, very complicated.

I do want to say one thing is most tractor trailer drivers are good drivers.

They're professional drivers.

That's what they do for a living.

They're looking out for each other, they're looking out for themselves, they're looking

out for us.

However, there are tractor trailer drivers that are texting, heaven forbid sometimes

drinking, or otherwise just being careless in the effects from that are absolutely devastating.

The injuries and or death that result from that, it affects the whole family.

Yeah.

Oh, absolutely.

And it's just a severe, severe situation.

When you have that, you need a competent legal advice on your side.

It's not something an ordinary person knows about or can handle, even if your firm is

sophisticated.

You don't know the ins and outs of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act.

No, certainly not.

That's our job to know that.

Absolutely.

And to do that.

Yeah.

And how can they reach you if they have this kind of a situation?

Well, our website DaggettShulerLaw.com or to call us at 336-724-1234.

Very good.

Thanks David.

Thank you.

Until next time.

Workers' Compensation Law in North Carolina - Duration: 5:04.

Welcome to North Carolina Law TV.

Today we're going to talk about workers' compensation.

What is it and does my employer have it?

My guest is David Daggett, Managing Partner of Daggett Shuler Law.

He's going to help us out with some of these questions and answers.

Thank you, Cindy.

Thank you for being here, David.

How do we find out if our employer has workers' compensation, and is that important?

It's very important.

In North Carolina, any employer with three or more employees is required to have workers'

compensation coverage.

You ask your employer.

They should have a certificate of coverage.

Unfortunately, there's approximately 30,000 employers in North Carolina that do not have

workers' compensation coverage.

Very, very important, particularly if you're a construction worker, doing any heavy labor,

heavy lifting, you're in a risky position.

It's imperative to make sure that your employer has workers' compensation coverage.

Because if you're taking risk as part of your job, you want to make sure that you're taken

care of if something goes wrong.

Absolutely.

What do you do if you are injured on the job?

What is the next step?

The next step is you file the claim with your employer.

They're actually required to file a form.

You're required to file a notice of the claim also.

Both sides are supposed to do that, but the injured worker needs to make sure that happens.

That's how you get the process started.

You have the North Carolina Industrial Commission.

They're the ones that supervises and watches over the workers' compensation system.

That's where those forms are filed.

That's how your claim gets started.

Okay.

Have you ever heard of an employee being fired once they're injured and file a claim, and

is that legal?

No.

That's retaliatory.

There's specific laws against being fired for filing a workers' compensation claim.

Many times, that's the greatest fear that an employee has.

Yeah.

This is their livelihood.

They're now injured and out of work.

You need your pay to keep going.

You need a check to get going, but you're afraid that if you file the claim you can

be fired for it.

There's specific laws in North Carolina, both workers' compensation laws and employment

laws, that an employer is not allowed to do that.

Okay.

What about if you're driving a truck, you're on the job, you're driving a truck, you're

hit by another driver, so you're injured, where is the liability on that?

Is it the employer?

Is it the other driver?

Could be both.

Okay.

Whenever you're in the course and scope of your employment, those are the key words,

course and scope of your employment, you're covered by workers' compensation.

You could be covered by workers' compensation and have another party at fault also.

Gets pretty complicated.

It sure does.

Yeah.

If the other party's at fault, workers' compensation has a right to be repaid and you're entitled

to damages from the other side.

Workers' compensation is what's called a limited recovery system.

It doesn't include pain and suffering and those sort of things.

It's meant to take care of you and replace your lost wages and take care of your medical

expenses while you're out, but no other damages other than that, unless you have a permanent

injury.

The third party claim, it's just like damages in any other case that you would have if you

were just in an ordinary car accident.

Yeah.

But it's complicated because there's all sorts of notice provisions.

There's all sorts of repayment provisions, and the logistical coordination of that is

very difficult.

In fact, many insurance adjusters don't even understand how that works.

I'm not surprised to hear that.

If they were to call you to handle this, how much would it cost?

Workers' compensation cases are handled on a percentage basis.

It's a contingency fee.

The beautiful part about a contingency fee, is nothing comes out of your pocket, and you

don't pay anything unless there's a recovery on your case.

Okay.

How can they reach you, David?

At our website, DaggettShulerLaw.com, or (336) 734-1234.

Very good.

Thank you for having me.

Workers' Compensation is an Insurance Coverage - Duration: 1:58.

Hello and welcome to Daggett Shuler, Attorneys at Law.

This is David Daggett.

Today I want to talk to you a little bit about workers' compensation.

Workers' compensation is an insurance coverage that's required by employers who have three

or more employees.

It's there to make sure employees are covered for any injuries and medical expenses that

they have in the course of their employment.

It's important to know that in North Carolina the estimates are that there's approximately

30,000 employers that don't have worker's compensation coverage.

Particularly if you're doing a dangerous job, a heavy labor job, a job that's up in the

air, you should make sure to check with your employer to make sure they have worker's compensation

insurance coverage.

Very briefly, workers' compensation covers your time where you're out of work.

It covers your medical expenses, your lost wages, and can pay you if you have a permanent

disability.

The system many times takes care of itself and takes care of employees particularly if

it's a minor injury.

But if it's a serious injury that affects your ongoing wage-earning capacity, you should

consult with an attorney who handles worker's compensation cases.

This is David Daggett.

You can find us at DaggettShulerLaw.com or 724-1234.
